Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's the Michael J Podcast all over ninety three point
one WPOC with the man stand the fan from press
Box Online.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Is it you, Yes, sir Michael J. How are you
you notice?
Speaker 1 (00:12):
I'm in a better mood than normal today and I
want to apologize right now. When you and I last spoke,
you talked me off the ledge as an Orioles fan.
But you know, how was I to know that we'd
be getting all these guys back. We've got our whole
team back again, well most of them.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, we do, We do have most of them. We've
got great news over the weekend when Jordan Westberg came
back and Ramon Orias, who I think a lot of
us had put on the scrap heap with the impending
arrival of Jackson Holiday at one point, and then Kobe
Mayo later. But Ramon Urias has been an integral part
(00:51):
of the Orioles' success in the second half of the year.
And we also got Danny Koolom back. Yeah, and now
last night we got Ryan Mountcastle.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, yeah, We're not going to get Grayson. We're not
getting Grayson Rodriguez back. Not a not really a shocker,
because that was a pretty serious injury he's got.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Speaking of injuries, no one's talking about Jorge Mateo, but
I miss him.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Well because he was unlike all these other guys. The
reason nobody's talking about him is because he clearly wasn't
coming back. He was lost for the season with that
subse sublet station of his shoulder. It was a pretty major,
pretty major injury. There was always hope, although it was
kind of kept vague as to when Jordan would get back.
(01:42):
Us got hurt later on, and Kulam missed like close
to three months and he's come back and looked pretty
darn good so far.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Well, I was I was ready to toast the entire
team because you know, it looks like we've got a
chance now to maybe do something here in the postseason, and.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well we maybe we'll pick up a lesson from last
year's team. The Rangers barely made it in We're further
along than the Rangers were last year, but you know,
it didn't prove the winning the division didn't prove to
be the be all and end all for the Orioles
in twenty twenty three, and maybe playing immediately after the
(02:23):
regular season will allow them to keep up some momentum
if they keep up the momentum for the next four days.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Right while I was watching the game last night, thinking
all those people paying four hundred dollars to sit in
those expensive seats at Yankee Stadium have got to be thinking,
I don't know if our team's going anywhere.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Look, I haven't been majorly impressed with the Yankees all year,
but there they are four games in front of us.
They got hot at the right time. Right, Well, we
really went in the tank. They and they've got two
of the most amazing hitters excuse yeah, in all of baseball,
and the great Soto and Aaron Judged.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I'll give you that. But here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
I mean, it's got to be frustrating to their fans
to see us come in and kick their butts the
last two nights.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
I'm sure it is a little bit frustrating. And you know,
I apologize sor Ry went down the long pipe. Cleveland
Indians and the Yankees are within half a game at
each other. So the Guardians don't the Guardians, not Brilliams.
The Guardians don't play to night. But the Guardians could
(03:37):
end up with home field advantage through the playoffs if
they best the Yankees over the next four days.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
So I'm watching the game, and all of a sudden,
I hear Palmer saying, wait a minute, does that stand
the fan down in the seats and there's a guy
there who he didn't look like you.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Think he looked like you.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I thought, actually, Michael J. When I saw it. First
of all, I happened to be on the phone when
it was originally shown, so I never heard it, and
all of a sudden, my texts, and at my age,
my text don't blow up too much.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Well, I texted you and I said, they're talking about him.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
I got about ten people texting me, so I found
out what it is. Somebody one of our producers at
pressbox online dot Com had the nice city to send
it to me, and I saw them talking about first
there's an Asian guy, so I knew they were talking
about me. So I said, wait a minute, I don't
look like this guy. And then they cut to a
(04:38):
guy for about four seconds, and he didn't. He did
look like me from the side, but I said, I'm
not that heavy, am I? And I texted. I texted
Palmer about ten minutes later just to make clear that
I wasn't at Yankee Stadium. I was home, like you said,
(04:59):
I right, and Palmer goes. We Palmer texts me back,
he goes, we determined that you're a good bitch, fitter
than that time. And I gotta waited about forty pounds.
That was mean before the pandemic start walking right.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Hey, well listen, you know everybody was so excited about
Jackson Holiday when he came up, and he was really
a letdown. To be honest, I think it's too much
pressure to put on a twenty year old kid. He
wasn't ready for primetime. And it was really clear to
me as a fan that his defense was hurting us.
I mean, you guys talked about it at pressboxonline dot
(05:38):
com and we all saw it. I mean, whether or
not he gets an error, I still think Jackson is
just not ready to play second base. He's not ready
at the plate, and Westburg certainly is. I mean he
was he looked incredible again last night at second base.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Well, it really shouldn't be that much of a surprise
to us. We got clup in the hype of this
amazing twenty year old player. But he was twenty years old.
Jordan Westberg is like three and a half four years older.
He had the the You know, he played college baseball
for three or four years at Mississippi State, and he's
(06:17):
just more seasoned and ready to go. I will tell
you this though, Jackson holiday, let's be quite honest, he
was a flop offensively. But second base, there were times
he was okay, but there were times where you needed
a second baseman that would make that play right, and
(06:38):
Jackson didn't seem to be able to make that play. No.
I talked to a scout. I talked to a scout
three years ago when Jackson was signed by the Area
drafted and signed by the Oriols, and he said, you know,
we thought he was going to go eight or nine
and we had a shot at him. So I scouted
him extensively and I asked him, I said, do you
(07:01):
think he could play if he had to? Could he
play Jenner field? And he said absolutely, he could play
anywhere in the diamond. So I don't think he looks
that great at second base. I would like to throw
that in the mix that maybe what he needs to
become for a year or two is sort of like
a Jackson profar Jerrikson profar, where he plays a little
(07:24):
bit of a lot of positions, right, and he gets
that offense going and then he can settle into one
position at a later date.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Well, I'll tell you who has settled in this year,
in his second year as an oriole. I love what
Gunner's been doing, not only at the plate with all
the home runs, but you know he has.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Had his throwing errors during the year. And I texted
you this.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I've noticed that he seems like he's taken that extra
split second just to calm down and make sure he
throws the ball accurately. Now, last night he saved a
couple of runs bye by just knocking a ball down.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I heard Ross Grimsley talking about that.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
That's a big things. Yeah, you see guys that do
that and you'll get more respect from your teammates and
opposing players.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Right, And Gunner did it last night again, he knocked
the ball down.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Yeah, he's got good rain.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
I'll tell you what. What's what's been his problem? He's
he's a big shortstop. Okay, He's not like the old day.
Is like a Louis Aparicio or a Mark Blanger who
quickly gets in front of a ball. JJ Hardy another example,
who gets in front of a ball, deals it correctly.
(08:40):
He's trying to anticipate that he's not as quick as
those guys, so he's trying to surround the ball and
make make it all in one I think what he's
done the last ten days or two weeks, Michael Jay
and I think it's pretty stud of you to pick
it up. I think he's making I'm sure he gets
(09:01):
the ball in his glove, yes, which is rule number
one is get it in the glove. And then he
has that that side arm underhand throw that he's very
accurate with and very quick with right. So I think
he's learning the position how he needs to play it
at the major league level. I am no longer of
(09:21):
the opinion that he's a third basement. Nope, he's just
short stop for the next four or five years.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
And Stan Fan, if you watch, and I've been to
a lot of games this year, and I watch before
every single play Gunner at shortstop, you watch he hops,
he literally and I noticed that the Jackson Holliday had
picked up on that too. But he's the only guy
out in the field who he is ready to hop
(09:48):
into every play so that he he feels like he
can get that extra jump. So I just I just
love it. I love what he's doing.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Yeah, Brooks was the first guy I ever saw to
do that. Brooks on every single play he played in
the major leagues. Defensively, Brooks came in very slightly. He
got moving because it's much easier to react and move
off of a move than being stationary. Yeah, so Gunner
(10:19):
is a very astute young player who knows. Maybe the
two of them talked about it before. Brooks is untimely passing,
which Jim Palmer texted out today. It's exactly a year
since we lost Brooks Robinson.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Man. Yeah, that's heartbreak here and Earl Weaver and Brooks
Robinson's deaths both hit me hard. I played little I
played little league with Brooks's sons, Chris and Mike, and
Brooks used to come to our practices.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
He was just a hell of a great guy, just
a guy.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
He was the best. He was the best. They don't
make him much better than that. The love that, the
love that you know Baltimore had for Rooks Robinson and
that he had for his adopt at home city was
so very special. Michael J.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Well, with that, we're going to wrap up to Michael
J Podcast this week. But I love talking with you
Stan the Fan, and I love pressboxonline dot com.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Thank you very much, Michael jam looking forward and we'll
talk at the beginning of next week when we know
the playoff exact schedule. But it looks like the Orders
are going to play I think the Tigers in the
first round, with the Astros playing.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
The Royals' that's.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Scaryland and the Yankees getting the buy.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Well, it's all coming down to pitching. So let's hope
we've got our aces tuned up and ready to rock.
