had in the building and it is all Seattle Seahawks fans.

Been praying, dreaming that we would be doing a twelve
Man postgame show on February the eighth. And we are here,
and we have a Super Bowl championship, a Lombardi Trophy
is coming back to Seattle for the first time in
twelve years, a twenty nine to thirteen victory over the

New England Patriots, and oh my goodness, I was just
it was different. It felt different than any other Super Bowl,
any other Super Bowl week. It just completely felt different
all these other Super Bowl weeks we've had dating all
the way back to Detroit.

Speaker 5 (02:37):
In two thousand and five season, two thousand and six Super.

Speaker 6 (02:40):
Bowl, it was just this angst, right, it was just
this worry. This was like, are we good enough? Yes,
we can win this game. We spent the whole week
trying to convince ourselves, Yes we can beat the Steelers,
can overcome the terrible Towels, Yes we can beat Peyton
Manning and the Greatest Show on Earth. But can we
really can we beat Tom Brady in the New England Patriots.

And he's just convincing ourselves that we could win those
games and they only got one out.

Speaker 7 (03:06):
Of the first three. This one.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
All week long, I just had this and I'm not alone.
The Twelves just had this sense of quiet, calm confidence,
and it showed on the field.

It showed in the stadium. The Twelves showed.

Up in mass It was four to one, five to
one Seahawks fans in that stadium over Patriot fans.

Speaker 7 (03:31):
Hell, there was as.

Many Niner fans in the stands as there were Patriot
fans in the stands, and some of them were actually
rooting for the Seahawks. I had a Niner fan behind
me rooting for the Seahawks.

It was unbelievable.

But I am just so proud.

Speaker 6 (03:45):
I'm so proud of this organization from the top down.
I am proud of the Twelves for being the best
fan base in America all season long and showing it
here and Hubreed Love Millan joins us on the twelve
Man post game show. Hugh, we do this all year
to hope and pray that we're doing this and we're
celebrating and the final team to celebrate in the NFL.

And for the second time, we are the final team
to celebrate in the NFL. My friend, It's really remarkable.
It's it's an incredible experience. Is something that.

As a fan, you know, you you you take it
with you. I mean, there's only three major championships, championships
in major sports in the entire history of Seattle, and
tonight's one of the three. That's a lot of years
when you compound them. Hats off to the the entire organization.
They're so likable. It's it's such a convicted fan base.

I think for a lot of us, it's like, WHOA,
this came on fast, Like they became such a legitimate
Super Bowl contender, you know, in year time two under
Mike McDonald obviously year one with the the central components
of the offense, and and yet here you are in
a in a dominating Super Bowl win, and it's just exhilarating.

I mean, that's you know that. This is why we're
sports fans. Is the way unites us, the way it
makes us feel. Man, it feels good tonight.

It certainly does.

second Super Bowl championship, Hugh, it was done with such ease.

And you use the word dominant, and that.

Is just I mean, it's a perfect word to describe
what we saw tonight, particularly on one side of the football.
The dark side defense was every bit as dominant as
the Lob was in their Super Bowl championship, albeit not
against as nearly as great an offense, nearly as much
talent as Denver had in that season. But nonetheless, you

beat a top five offense, and you just you just
beat down a top five offense.

Speaker 5 (06:22):
What stifled them didn't allow.

Speaker 6 (06:24):
Them to breathe the entire game until it was garbage time,
where they got all their yards.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
They had less than eighty yards of.

Speaker 8 (06:32):
Offense after three quarters. They had sixty eight yards passing.
After three quarters. They were on a pace to throw.
The guy who was second in the MVP voting, Drake
May was on a pace for eighty yards passing. Now
in the fourth quarter, he goes nineteen or twenty five
for two to thirty five, two hundred and thirty five yards.

Speaker 7 (06:51):
In the fourth quarter alone.

Speaker 8 (06:53):
But he had two interceptions in there as well, And
and and you know, as you said, thirty nine yards
in the first quarter, twelve in the second quarter, fifty
one yards at halftime, twenty seven in the third quarter.

Speaker 7 (07:07):
It was twelve to nothing at the end of the
third quarter.

Speaker 8 (07:10):
Look, history is going to record the final score, and
when you look at it on a list of fifty
nine other Super Bowls, it's not going to strike you
as a like an eye popping defensive performance.

Speaker 7 (07:24):
But the reality is what you saw tonight was historic.

Speaker 8 (07:28):
It was epic. It was a domination. It was you know,
I think of Josh McDaniels. That guy has got a
lot of hardware, he's got a lot of bling on
his hand from all those Super Bowl rings, and he
was just utterly confounded. The matchup between Mike McDonald and
Josh McDaniels was it was a tko. It was like

standing akev Like get this guy, like he can't even
stand on his feet. It was such a domination by
that defense. And hats off to Kenneth Walker. We're gonna
get into all this, but I don't think that history
is gonna remember the level of dominance that we saw
to night defensively.

Speaker 6 (08:12):
So what is the why, Hugh tell us, why that
defensive front was so incredibly dominant against the Patriots offensive line.
We knew the Patriots offensive line had some issues, but
that defensive front was as dominant as they've been in
any game this season against teams not nearly as good

(08:32):
as New England.

Speaker 8 (08:34):
Well, they have the ability to build that wall. And
from the center, for whatever reason, that Bradbury, the center,
who had been with the Vikings last year, his game
has declined.

Speaker 7 (08:47):
From the center, the.

Speaker 8 (08:48):
Left guard that we discussed throughout the week, is the
weakest link on their entire football team. Out of twenty
two starters. The left tackle, the rookie just totally overmatched. Unathletic.

Speaker 7 (09:01):
I don't you know.

Speaker 8 (09:02):
I've been looking to see if he was injured, but
but he just couldn't handle, you know. So and look,
I don't think the right side of their line is
that great either, So Seattle.

Speaker 7 (09:12):
They build the wall for the game.

Speaker 8 (09:15):
The Patriots have seventy nine yards rushing, But how many
of that was off of Drake May? I'll answer my
own question. I mean, Drake May had thirty seven yards.
So running backs had forty two yards. You know, one
had three point three yards per carry, one had three
point two, you know, like it's just lather rints repeat

(09:37):
on this run defense for Seattle. And and you know
the thing about them is it starts on the inside
with with Leonard Williams, with Byron Murphy, with Jaron Reid
rotating in there. They are strong men in their legs,
They are strong men in their upper body. They are
strong men in their core. And that is vital with
what they are asked to do, which is to hold

up the offensive line. They're not to be quick and penetrate.
They just need to hold up and be able to
shed either way.

Speaker 7 (10:05):
And they build a wall.

Speaker 8 (10:07):
On the inside the team speed when you spill the
ball to the outside. That's just something we've seen every
damn game. And and so there's your answer. You get
him into the long yarded situations and the running and
then and then, uh, you know, just overwhelming in the
past rush h Drake may under siege and and and
cover like like you know, like they always do. In

(10:29):
terms of their their communication was just spot on, and
it was it was really kind of what they've showed
all year and and.

Speaker 7 (10:39):
And I I'm surprised.

Speaker 8 (10:41):
That that McDaniel didn't have something more than that. I mean,
I uh, you know, I know, Softie's a happy man,
because we were talking throughout the week like, hey, there's
no way that the Patriots are getting to twenty. And
I know he ended up betting a big sum of
money on that. So he's a happy man tonight for
many many reasons. Right, is smiling beautiful bride alongside with him.

(11:05):
So this is just happy Seahawk Nation. But I think
that that was the thought going in, is that is
that the Patriots.

Speaker 7 (11:11):
They ain't getting to twenty.

Speaker 8 (11:13):
So can you know the only way that this is
gonna be a tough game for the Seahawks is if
the offense really gets bogged down for an extended period
of time? Right, And I think you know clearly wasn't
the You know, it's not a Rembrandt for the offense,
but you know it's enough.

Speaker 7 (11:31):
When you have that dominating of a performance defensive.

Speaker 5 (11:35):
Well, let's talk to some of those twelves here.

Speaker 6 (11:37):

I I just called to say that what a great season.

Was just just a dominating performance in the super Bowl,
and it's just been an awesome season.

We went in.

Speaker 10 (12:13):
We knew we were gonna be good.

Speaker 9 (12:14):
We just didn't know how good we were gonna be.

With Donald behind the helm.

Speaker 8 (12:18):
But he proved himself.

He certainly did, Man, he certainly did.

And you know, Hugh, I thought that I thought Darnald
did a nice job in the second half after it
was six of his first seventeen and it looked like
he was I use the word skittish, I used the
word let me bee like, kind of a little bit
too amped up. But what did Sam Darnald look like
to you in the second half versus what you saw
in the first?

Speaker 8 (12:44):
Well, I think throughout the game I kind of assess
it as he did what he had to do to
win the Super Bowl, and he played against He's the
first quarterback in history. I heard it on the broadcast.
I gotta confirm it. He's the first quarterback in history
to win a Super Bowl with no turnovers.

Speaker 7 (13:02):
Through all the playoffs. Think about that.

Speaker 8 (13:04):
All the handwringing about the play the turnovers in the
regular season, and he may have posted that throw in
the week eighteen game against the forty nine ers, uh,
that you had to win for the number one seed.
And you know he's he's riding a four game a
streak of no turnovers whatsoever. So look, I thought he

(13:26):
when he missed, he missed in the correct place that
that early in the year.

Speaker 7 (13:32):
What was it the.

Speaker 8 (13:34):
Was it the first or the second drive when when
he held the ball and they kind of moved to
his left and then jigbab broke out of that that
clump and had he hit it.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
It's a touchdown, touchdown over the time, right right, But look.

Speaker 8 (13:49):
It's really easy on TV, Like like here's here's what
I can say. Uh, if you take take take a
can of beer and a can of oak and put
it on the floor one one, uh, you know, six
inches behind another and and then and then they have
somebody come up and estimate the distance between him.

Speaker 7 (14:12):
Okay, now take.

Speaker 8 (14:14):
The the take uh, and they're looking down, they'll give
a pretty good estimate. Now take those two cans and
put it up on the kitchen counter.

Speaker 7 (14:23):
And tell your buddy to get down to eye.

Speaker 8 (14:25):
Level, you know, from a distance, and then say, oh,
how close are they get together? Your your your depth
perception changes and Darnold's looking at that clump and and.

Speaker 7 (14:36):
We think, oh my god, how did he miss it?

Speaker 8 (14:38):
But ground level, when you're at ground level and there's
this clump of dudes and it's it's already off script, right,
so you don't know how fast guys are. And so
he threw it too long because he's being safe, but
you know, he's he's he obviously wishes he had that
he he uh overthrew she heat a go route on

on the post route.

Speaker 7 (15:03):
He uh.

Speaker 8 (15:04):
When they went against and Gonzalez had that great pass
breakup deep post route right to left, you would coach him, Hey,
flatten rashi shi he the angle's going too high up field.

Speaker 7 (15:14):
It allows the corner to get back to get in.

Speaker 8 (15:16):
If you had pulled him over to the left hash more,
remember he was coming from the right side.

Speaker 7 (15:21):
If you flatten him.

Speaker 8 (15:22):
To the ball that you'll create the separations. Very hard
for a dB, any dB to make that reaction. So
he didn't put the ball on that in the right
spot there He underthrew the corner route on the boot
leg to Uh to Cup, but he never he never
put the ball in the harm's way.

Speaker 7 (15:40):
There there was the boot where he went to his left.

Speaker 8 (15:42):
He kind of lobbed it early in the game with
Cup coming over, and you go, oh my god, that
you know, cause like it's like, wait a minute, what
are you doing lobbing that ball? Like defenders can can
make a play on that ball, but he he's he
lobs it over and he gave Jsn a chance. That's
a drop And so even the play that looked kind
of shaky, he put it in a place where his

best receiver had two hands on the ball.

Speaker 7 (16:07):
And jays N will tell you, you throw that.

Speaker 8 (16:10):
To me every time, we're gonna get forty nine out
of fifty. We just didn't get that one, and so
so we missed.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
There was now when when was okay?

Speaker 8 (16:19):
The post then and then the lot the worst one
he had his end the second quarter, the post route.
He threw it behind and Goodzalez had two hands on
the ball, so there was an opportunity for a big
uh turnover there. They get the field goal at the
end of the second quarter. But there's you know, we
talked in training camp. I'm not a big fan of
of a lot of moves. I'd rather just like put

your foot in.

Speaker 7 (16:40):
The ground and go in.

Speaker 8 (16:42):
So it it it messes your timing with them. And
so Donald is behind him on that play, but you
know Jaysen is trying to bend to the corner and
Donald's trying to throw it loose. There are some coaches
in football that philosophically they say, hey, don't bend to
the corner to that either at all or to that
degree if you give that kind of latitude.

Speaker 7 (17:04):
Now, if you're gonna give a guy latitude, you're gonna
give it.

Speaker 8 (17:06):
To j s n because he's he is graduate school,
he's next level, he's PhD level wide receiver. And in
terms of his football IQ, we get that. But that
did that that worldview, that philosophy of of allowing your
receivers to to to slow down shake whatever.

Speaker 7 (17:23):
Uh, it's harder.

Speaker 8 (17:25):
For a quarterback to have time and and he threw
it behind that ball could have been picked. So so
i'm I'm I've just given you like his misses that
prevented him from having a great game. But he's still
he's at fifty Percy. By modern standards, that's not good enough.
But he's over two hundred yards and uh, you know,
and and he didn't he didn't have the turnover.

Speaker 7 (17:45):
He played to the level of the game.

Speaker 8 (17:47):
It reminds me of of if you have Ben Roethlisberger
in this Sorry to pick scabs, but the the uh
the uh the Super Bowl. Ben Roethlisberger didn't have a
good game statistically against they at all.

Speaker 7 (18:00):
Right, but if you go back, I think.

Speaker 8 (18:03):
The AFC Championship game, in one of the other playoffs
that year, he was money, he like he carried him
and yet so the super Bowl was his first super Bowl.
Ring was a downer, But a Steeler fan only has
to go, oh, yeah, but what about the game that
put us in the super Bowl. That's exactly how Seattle
fans have to look at Sam Darnold.

Speaker 7 (18:23):
Okay, this, you know is his passer rating is a
little under eighty.

Speaker 8 (18:27):
This is not going to go down in the anamals
as great as a great Super Bowl win by a quarterback.
But what he did to in the NFC Championship game
to put you in this position and then without him
he doesn't get the win, he gets the not loss.

Speaker 7 (18:41):
Can we call that?

Speaker 5 (18:42):
Yes, absolutely, it's the not loss.

Speaker 8 (18:45):
By his quarterback play, so you know, and and think
about the redemption story for him that everybody's gonna be
talking now.

So good, so good.

It was great to see him up under the podium
after that game. Damon and Auburn your next up? What's
going on?

Speaker 5 (18:58):
Damon? You're on the twelve man post game show? No,
dam out, what do we got? Let's go to Eli

Hey, I'm so excited. Man, I'm nineteen years old. I
remember twelve years ago watching Super Bowl forty eight and man,
they hid it. I'm so excited.

It's just been such an awesome ride from you know,
the preseason with Donald and I honestly thought it was
the lateral.

But how wrong was I? I'm freaking hype, man. What
a what a win? What a win? You know? So
I'm super excited.

I appreciate the call, and Hugh, I think it's great
now that we can all be on the same page.
Wherever you were on Sam Donald when they made the acquisition,
wherever you were on Sam Donald on day one of
the season. Hell, wherever you were on Sam Donald when
he threw four interceptions against the Rams. I think every

buddy is on a very similar page to Sam Darnold,
that this is the guy that we're gonna wrap our
arms around for the next six to seven years.

Speaker 5 (20:07):
In the city.

Speaker 8 (20:08):
I don't think there's any question about it. I mean,
it's one of the great stories in sports over years,
and it happens to be, you know, at this point
ground zero in Seattle, Washington. And you know, I think
that if you haven't realized how beloved he is by
his teammates everywhere. Uh, and and just his style. You saw,

(20:28):
you know, he's up there on the podium and and
you know when people want to ask him about him,
what's he doing, he starts talking about everybody else and
deflecting praise. And there's just an even keel to him.
There's a humility to him. You know, the work ethic
and oh, by the way, you know, the physical trait too.
A big dude who can move. You saw his scrambling
played a key part on a couple of occasions.

Speaker 7 (20:51):
His movement in the pocket, uh, you know, big time arms.

Speaker 8 (20:54):
So this is a skilled guy who happens to be
and you know, the guy that you'd want your daughter
to marry, the guy you'd want as a next door neighbor.
Like he's he's just that cool of a dude. And
if we don't all realize that, we're just not paying attention.
I mean, it's just right there for us. It's not
hard to find. And so he's he's one of the
most likable athletes in Seattle professional sports history.

In my opinion.

Everybody you fan, how you want a fan, you want
to say, that's not my style for whatever reason, I
wouldn't probably I wouldn't get it, but i'd certainly uphold
This is all subjective. But you ask me about Sam Donold,
I see a guy that now has he's you know,
cast off whatever their the gorilla.

Young when you know, and when he won his Super
Bowl in ninety four and there was this, you know, like, hey,
take the grill off my back. You know, Sam Donald's
not that type of personality that he would bring it
on himself, but on some level there's been a gorilla
on him about he can't the big one, and you know,
and think about that, just you know, as I'm transit

quick transition on Dick think Drake May. We talked in
the week. Drake May grew up in North Carolina, played
high school football in a basketball state, went to North
Carolina Basketball School.

He played in two bowl games, the Duke Mayo Bowl
and the and the uh the.

Speaker 8 (22:18):
Holiday Bowl yep, and and then so I'm sitting there
going he never had a big game in college.

Speaker 7 (22:26):
And I mean a really big game.

Speaker 8 (22:28):
The biggest, really big game he had was in the
AFC Championship. That game prior to today, that would have
been his biggest game. And in the first half when
the weather was conducive, he wasn't. I mean, he was
just bound up. There was just like nothing from him,
no playmaking ability. Like I'm sitting here going, if you
want to find a quarterback who seemingly, you know, you

want to you want to unfairly tag a guy with
he can't you know, play well in a big game,
you know, put your eyes on Drake May and and
and so at an event. You know, it's not very
fun to if somebody were to say that about you.

But but you know people aren't gonna be saying that
about Darnold anymore.

Speaker 6 (23:09):
Well, here we got so much to get to. We
got the big plays from the game. We'll find out
what your play of the game is. We're going to

I'm doing good, Dick. I wish you could say we
had three Super Bowl champions.

But coach, let's just talk about this defensive performance. I mean,
what did you make of it?

Speaker 6 (25:39):
Where does that rank in some of the great defensive
performances you've ever seen a team have in a Super Bowl?

Speaker 15 (25:45):
No, they dominated tonight, they dominated New England. Didn't have
a chance. The young quarterback I felt when I watched
the game, I felt sorry for him, actually, and you
know what, and they they they it didn't work.

Speaker 4 (26:02):
And so.

Speaker 15 (26:04):
No, I'm so happy for the Seahawks and coach Mike McDonald's.
He's done a great job and plus his hard he
deserves us.

Speaker 14 (26:17):

Speaker 7 (26:17):
Thanks for joining us. And when you talk about the
miserable day.

Speaker 8 (26:23):
Drake May had, and I think anybody who's ever played
the position or coached it could feel for him, because
I mean, it was really just everything was unraveling on
that young man. But talk about it from a Sea
Hawk perspective, what you think was really key to watching
that poor guy who was second in the MVP voting.

(26:45):
That had to be one of the worst Super Bowl
performances we've seen from a quarterback ever.

Speaker 15 (26:51):
You know, Hugh, I think the fact that they could
bother him and pressure him with four guys and then
get the other seven guys who are great athletes running
around behind that to come up the passing game, you know,
it's hard. And I when I might take away from

(27:15):
the offensive line for the New England Patriots, couldn't. They
just didn't function. They couldn't handle it. And when you
could rush with four guys and disrupt like that, you know,
the quarterback, it's hard. You don't have much of a chance.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
Mike Hongrin has joined US coach Ken Walker twenty seven
carries in this game, by far the most carries of
any in the season. His most this year was nineteen.
He goes for one hundred and thirty five yards on
five yards per carry. He had the back to back
up big big runs there in the ending stages of

(27:53):
the first half.

Speaker 5 (27:54):
He also added two catches for twenty six yards.

Speaker 6 (27:57):
Were you surprised at how well Seattle was able to
run the ball, because I really thought that they would
have some more issues than they did.

Speaker 15 (28:06):
No, I I was a little surprised. I thought early on.
I'm saying, when I'm watching the film and going to
contain the outside, contained forced him to run inside, and
New England couldn't do that. But what he shows when
Ken Walker runs, he goes, you saw it and you
brought it up a couple of weeks ago on the

(28:27):
show that they moved him back and then they hand
him the ball and he just looks and waits and
he's good at that, and so it has worked for them.
But it's you know, he did a great time tonight.
I don't know who got who got the most Valuable Player?

Speaker 5 (28:45):
Ken did?

Speaker 15 (28:47):
Ken? Yeah, No, he was my vote. He was my
vote because you know, and I'm really he's you know,
I've had a chance to talk to him a little bit.
He's a great young man and I hope they do
the right thing with him.

Speaker 7 (29:03):
Mike. My question about Sam Donald comes in uh in
two parts.

Speaker 8 (29:07):
Just number one, just kind of the human side of this.
You know that this is this is such a sweet
redemption for him. He's the last guy that's spiking the
football after the game, because that's just how he's wired.

Speaker 7 (29:21):
Just a humble dude. But just your thoughts.

Speaker 8 (29:24):
About the triumph, the personal triumph that was represented in
Sam Donald tonight, but then then maybe schematically, uh, you
know the quarterback coach and Mike holmgrin, what what did
you think about the game that he had, What was
going through your mind from a strategic sense, and how
you might have been interacting with him as that game

(29:45):
went along.

Speaker 15 (29:47):
Well, first of all, Hugh, you know, and you know
this better than anybody. I was very happy for how
he played and and what he did. And he's been
you know, it's been crazy. We have talked about it
on the show before, how people are critical or not critical,
but they say, you know, he still has to do this.

(30:10):
He's been remarkable this year and it's been a gray
I'm so happy for him. Okay, now, what I would
say He threw some flat passes early that were close.
They were really close, and and you know what, but
you know that shows me the confidence level he has.

(30:30):
No I just I just think I'm very happy for
him because of all the stuff they've talked about with
him and he finally got it done.

Speaker 6 (30:41):
Coach, I turned to my brother when Sam was six
of seventeen, and I said, you know, Sam, to me,
looks like a guy that's kind of hopped up, like
a kid hopped up on skittles.

Speaker 9 (30:52):
You know.

Speaker 6 (30:53):
He's like he's like, he's like down like three bags
of skittles, and he's just a little not.

Speaker 5 (31:00):
Nervous, but just kind of overhamped.

Speaker 6 (31:02):
What would you have said to Sam at halftime that
would have just kind of got him back into the
rhythm a little bit, because he was clearly more comfortable
in the second half than he was in the first half.

Speaker 15 (31:14):
Yeah, I agree with I think, and I've had to
deal with that with quarterbacks before, particularly Brett Favre. You know,
where you just say, hey, it's it's okay, calm down,
take a breath, let's get this done. You know, whatever,
you say, whatever you decide to say as a coach.
But uh, you know, and he did that. He responded beautifully,

(31:38):
and you know what that that's been his season. I
like I said, I'm so happy for him really because
he's been under the gun and all the all the criticism,
whatever it is, the criticism or the doubt, you know,
and now he's done it. And I couldn't be happier.

Speaker 7 (31:58):
Mike.

Speaker 8 (31:58):
I thought there was a good portion of that game,
you could almost say for three quarters, but certainly in
the first half where both quarterbacks were underseas, and certainly
for Darnold's part, and he was trying to throw out
of a phone booth, you know, over and over again.
And I don't mean with Superman cape. I mean with
guys all around him, everything closing in on him. Yeah,

(32:20):
you know, he's getting his arm hit, he's having to move.

Speaker 17 (32:23):
What have you.

Speaker 8 (32:24):
I thought there was a portion of that game where
it was very difficult to be a professional quarterback, regardless.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
Of which team you're on.

Speaker 8 (32:32):
And yet, so sometimes beautiful quarterbacking isn't that you you
know through for three hundred and fifty yards.

Speaker 7 (32:39):
It's the you avoided the mistakes, you made a few
plays on third down.

Speaker 8 (32:43):
They're not highlight You're not going to put it in
a time capsule and send it off to some other
planet about beautiful quarterbacking.

Speaker 7 (32:49):
But it's just sometimes, you know, it's just sometimes that's
what the game. You know, it dictates. You didn't want
it to be that way, but that's what you're in
and you've got a quarterback.

Speaker 8 (32:59):
A certain way is is there any of that that
you kind of felt during that that the way both
quarterbacks wonder season, particularly Dorno exactly.

Speaker 15 (33:08):
You know you you said it well and you played
the position. So there are games where all of a
sudden you see that, you know, it's it's hard, you're
getting banged around, and how you handle that and how
you bounce back from that says a lot about who
you are. And that's what I saw tonight. I saw

(33:29):
him bounce back from that, the pressure and what was
happening in the game. It was hard, and then all
of a sudden, you know, he hung in there and
he started making good decisions. Well it didn't start making
he made good decisions.

Speaker 12 (33:46):
Right, but he you know, he hung in there and
it was good.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
Coach, just a couple more minutes. We really appreciate you

I just want to ask you, as somebody that's been
very very close to Seahawks foot ball for what almost
more than twenty five years, now, what does this mean
to the franchise in general?

Speaker 5 (34:09):
In the whole scheme of the NFL.

Speaker 6 (34:11):
Four Super Bowl appearances, two championships since two thousand and five,
and we're just talking about two decades now. Four appearances
and two championships. Where does that put Seattle on the
whole parthenon of the NFL?

Speaker 15 (34:25):
Now, Well, you know, it's getting their dick. You know,
I had the privilege of coaching in Green Bay and
coaching in San Francisco, and those teams, you know, we
had a lot of good teams, went to Super Bowls,
things like that. But now Seattle. People are talking about Seattle.
They know about Seattle, and so what's happened tonight and

(34:49):
will continue to happen. I think I think the future
is very bright. I think people will look at Seattle
like they've looked in the past at Pittsburgh, you know,
San Francisco, Green Bay, whomever. So it's an exciting thing.
The city should be very excited about this.

Speaker 8 (35:09):
Well, Mike, I personally think I'm certain that I speak
for many Seahawks fans. I think that the acquisition of
Mike Holmgren just put an entirely different perspective on the
Seattle Seahawks. And when you came in, I think there's
there's a whole generation of kids that when they saw
a Seattle Seahawks sweatshirt, you know, the Seahawks were whoa Okay,

(35:31):
there's something and you know, we wish you got the
ring you had your reading with the packers.

Speaker 7 (35:36):
We wish you had another one here.

Speaker 8 (35:38):
But I think you can take a lot of pride
in in just the shape, in the direction of the
Seattle Seahawks and and just you know, feeling like, Okay,
you know that mindset, Hey, we belong, we belong on
this stage. I think that, uh, that you created a
big part of that for a lot of players and coaches.

(36:00):
So I hope you feel a sense of pride in
addition to, uh, you know, the jubilation that we're all
experiencing as Seahawk fan. I hope you have an extra
sense of pride based on your pivotal role at the
onset of all this success.

Speaker 15 (36:13):
Absolutely, coach, well you know, Hugh, I can't I can't
thank you enough. And we've worked together a while and
that's very very nice. And and when I when I
see you again, I'm going to pay you twenty bucks.

Speaker 7 (36:30):

Now no, but seriously, seriously, you know what the set,
what we did in Seattle, what we did in Seattle
early on, I couldn't be more proud. And now Mike's
carrying the torch.

We had a Mic started and now we got a
Mike Roland. Now it's a beautiful name. And coach, we

in and turn this franchise into a championship caliber franchise.

there and there, Yeah, Hughes, so many, so many great
plays from this game. And I guess you got to
go back and look at when was the game one?
And I guess, in in my opinion, the game was
won when we finally got a touchdown on the board
after four consecutive field goals. I was saying all along,

(38:04):
I was texting all my friends, I was, you know,
putting it up on Twitter. I was just saying, if
we score one touchdown, no matter when it is, if
we score one touchdown, we're gonna.

Speaker 5 (38:16):
Win this football game.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
That is how confident a halftime I was that the
Seahawks defense was not gonna allow New England to do
much of anything. And we finally got that touchdown. It
took us a long time. If it took us all
the way to the fourth quarter, with the thirteen to
twenty four left in the fourth and let's start with
two plays in front of the AJ Barner touchdown. We've

(38:40):
got an incomplete pass deep the right to Cooper Cup
that I thought was potentially a pass interference.

Speaker 5 (38:48):
I want to get your take on that.

Speaker 6 (38:50):
And then Sam Darnold on a huge third and nine
hits Cooper Cup for nine yards. And Cooper Cup has
been there particularly over the last month, just picking up
those pivotal third and mediums, third and longs, and he
did it again.

Speaker 5 (39:05):
So did you think it was past interference?

Speaker 6 (39:07):
And then take us through that third and nine at
the New England twenty five which set up the touchdown.

Speaker 5 (39:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (39:14):
Well, first of all, you've got Cooper Cup. Tip of
the hat to him.

Speaker 8 (39:19):
He led the Seahawks and receiving yards was sixty one
and jig Ba had just twenty seven, so he more
than doubled up him. And I understand Jigba had the
concussion and he was out of the game for a portion.
There the boot corner, you got Sam Darnold on running
on the right, and usually there's a certain speed that
you want to be at to be most accurate. I

(39:41):
thought that he due to pressure, he's probably going a
little bit faster than you want. You don't want to
be throwing that ball running full speed. You know, if
you're three quarter speed, then.

Speaker 7 (39:52):
You can be accurate. So I'll confirm that when I
watched the tape, you know the end zone in the
sideline copy.

Speaker 8 (39:58):
But that was my note there. You know, he under
threw the ball and I did think it was past interference.
You know, the the telecast isn't gonna say that the
uh the out route he uh to the left the
third and nine. Yep, that was that was where Cup
has to work. Essentially manned a man on an outbreaking route.

(40:19):
You don't you really can't, uh shimmy and shake. You
got to speed cut that out and think about that.
He's not real fast. Uh, but the outside receiver has
a go and then the inside receiver has that out route.
And I thought that that that was one of the
times where Darnold had great protection and there was a
certain like, uh, grit your teeth type of element, at

(40:44):
least as I interpreted his throw where he stepped into
that ball. He had great mechanics. Again, he had a
niket and uh. And then and then the the fake
the touchdown was off of a face. It was play action,
but they had they faked it off the stretch and
and and you know against the rams and throw it
when they've been really working this stretch to have those

(41:07):
you know, one the two tight ends, working throwing, running
the stretch, play the wide zone to the tight end
has been a big part of this.

Speaker 7 (41:14):
So in this case, you run this stretch.

Speaker 8 (41:16):
This was not play action where you're you're you're faking
like what's called fox two, which is where you're faking
the two hole over the guard. You're faking the stretch.
So Sam Darnold had to sprint away to really get
And so now the defenders that are in that area,
you have primary run support. You have secondary run support
in a bunch formation that's hard to sort out. Like

(41:37):
primary run supports as you just get up the field,
set the edge or go right right. Uh, secondary run
support is you can't you can't come get the runner
until you're sure that the runner has the ball past
the line of scrimmage. They could come up and so
they just busted a coverage. But credit Seattle. The type
of play action what have you? That for me, Dick,

(41:59):
was not the play the game?

Speaker 5 (42:00):
Oh okay, what was the play of the game for you?

Speaker 3 (42:03):
Bill?

Speaker 7 (42:03):
Well, I'll just I'll make the argument. I'll build the argument.

Speaker 8 (42:06):
See if I can't convince you love it so so Seattle,
as you said, they go up nineteen and nothing.

Speaker 7 (42:11):
So that's your play of the game. And I'm not
going to try and talk to you out of it.
I mean, I'm freaking happy as hell, and uh and
and so this is you know, this is all just
you know, a debate with a smile on our faces
because the seasons are are freaking world champions.

Speaker 5 (42:25):
And I don't know if it I mean, it was
it was the first time.

Speaker 6 (42:28):
It was the first time in the game that I
thought the game's over, Like in my opinion, when they
hit aj Barner and went up nineteen nothing in the fourth,
we all thought that.

Speaker 8 (42:37):
I who said, ESPN analytics say there's a ninety eight
point six percent chance Seattle's gonna win. So it's one
point four percent, so we all felt that way.

Speaker 7 (42:48):
I would say, for.

Speaker 8 (42:49):
Me, the play of the game. So now they give
up that, we won't go into it. But but there's
a three play touchdown drive. So the pages they nineteen
to seven right right, didn't go for two that was odd,
and so now it's twelve thirteen, twelve to twenty seven
to go. Seattle gets the ball, they go three and out,

(43:12):
so they put the ball and now the Patriots get
the ball with ten.

Speaker 7 (43:18):
Forty to go.

Speaker 8 (43:19):
Yep, it's nineteen to seven, and now they had it
from their own one yard line. So hell of a
job by Dixon. But absolutely, but it's nineteen to seven,
so obviously there are only two touchdowns back they still
got over ten minutes to go. If if the Patriots
had driven somehow got some plays and got a touchdown

(43:40):
on that drive, you tell me, you wouldn't have been puckering.

Speaker 3 (43:42):
A little bit.

Speaker 8 (43:43):
Yeah yeah, if that was nineteen to fourteen and they
just scored two touchdowns and the Madam is off the chance,
that's right, right. Remember now, Seattle did not have any
sacks on May and the fourth court. Now you say, well,
they hit his arm. That's better than a sack.

Speaker 7 (43:58):
I get that.

Speaker 8 (43:59):
But so to me, the interception by Julian Love, that
was the play of the game because that was the
one part of the of the where you got, oh wow,
this is you know, the Patriots have some life in
their offense.

Speaker 7 (44:13):
They have kind of got a little bit of momentum.
This could get away, and so on that play.

Speaker 5 (44:18):
You know why did that play happen?

Speaker 7 (44:21):
Well, it's a four man rush.

Speaker 8 (44:23):
The play for those and doctor Anying, the three digit
offense is called eight forty four ricky eight to the
left is a post route, and you had Julian Love
over the top of the post route to Drake May's left.
So everything I'm gonna say is from Drake May's perspective. Okay,
obviously flip it for the defense, but I got I

(44:45):
got Josh Job and he's underneath the post route. But
I got Julian Love over the top.

Speaker 7 (44:50):
The inbreaking route to my right I got. I got
Kobe Bryant coming top down on that. So that takes
it away.

Speaker 8 (45:00):
Now here's a beautiful part of the Mike McDonald defensive scheme.
The guy who was in the flat was Devin Witherspoon.
So the running back that comes on when I say Ricky,
Remember the part I said eight forty four Ricky, Ricky
was when the back goes to the right, Lucky is
to the left.

Speaker 7 (45:20):
So eight forty four forty The fours are two in
breaking routes. So this play has been around a long time.
But here's what's cool about McDonald.

Speaker 8 (45:29):
They have Ernest Jones take the Ricky route from the
middle and instead of Weatherspoon and Witherspoon falls back into
the middle field and he gets underneath the widest out
route excuse me, inbreaking route, and in that in so doing,

(45:50):
there's nowhere to go to the ball that the official
play by play said, Drake May was throwing the post.

Speaker 7 (45:55):
Route to his left to eighteen. He got eighteen up
mac macall.

Speaker 8 (46:03):
Eighteen is Kyle Williams. But when you look at the
when the telecast showed the eyes of Drake May. He
wasn't looked into his left over to Kyle Williams. He
was looking to the right, the widest in route, so
he was It's my contention that he was trying to
throw the ball the case on booty, but Witherspoon got

(46:26):
underneath it. That ball was like flyers up, like it
was halfway between the post route and the deep end.
So it wasn't like I mean, it was so scattered
because Drake May had to move up in the pocket
against the four men rush there. He had to move
up and throw it out of a phone booth and
the ball just airmailed. But in any event, this is

(46:48):
an example of how the Seahawks. What's the takeaway. The
Seahawks are playing zone coverage, they're rushing with four and
their ability to double guys at the right time. I
have safetyes trigger down on the concept. Have have other
nickel guys who are you know, Devin Witherspoon is an
outside corner on this play.

Speaker 7 (47:09):
He's playing the overhang and he falls back underneath into
the middle of the field. Like that's a that's a
wide array of things.

Speaker 8 (47:16):
That you're asking Devin Witherspoon to do. But he can
cover so much ground that he gets underneath that thing.
And so there's a point where you go, if you're
Drake May, I can freeze the tape from the end zone.

Speaker 7 (47:27):
I go, Where the hell do you go with the ball?
Where do you go with the ball? The Seas just
have an understanding of being tied together. We've all played foostball.

Speaker 8 (47:35):
You know, the back line on football, they all move
it one when you you know, three guys go, you know,
to one.

Speaker 7 (47:41):
Side, three guys go. They're all right. Obviously the seax
a like freaking football. They just are all tied together.
But not three guys.

Speaker 8 (47:49):
There's seven guys that that are just have an understanding.
So I thought that was the play of the game
because it was the one time where you kind of
if you're a Patriot fan, you go, maybe we got
a chance.

Speaker 7 (48:02):
We got some wife. You just hit hit that touchdown
pass right right. Yes, you beat reequeeing on the go route.

Speaker 8 (48:09):
So you're feeling like, hey, we got a little momentum.
That was the one chance, and so in Seattle shut
it down.

So that event, yeah, cool stuff.

bring Ernest Jones in run running through the middle of
the defense, and so the running back has to block him.
And now that just sets up the b gap for
Witherspoon to come knifing in unblocked because Ernest Jones is
already eating up.

when you just take a sack and you say, look
live to see another day. They obviously gave off and
just punted the ball away. Two plays later when I
looked at my wife's dick and I said, Babe, Sam Darnald,
that is the play where people that wait for him
to make mistakes, that's where he would have made a mistake.
That's where he would have turned the ball over. And

the fact that he was able to hang on to
that ball on that sack was one of the biggest
plays in the game for me.

this offense without Kenny Walker on the football team. So

I'm just looking back, Hugh at what Canine has done
since that win over the Rams, the game that really
opened up the gates for the Seahawks to go to
the Super Bowl. He was eleven for one hundred and
a touchdown in this game in that game and added
sixty four yards receiving. He then proceeded to have ninety

seven yards on six point one yards per carry against
the San Francisco forty nine Ers in the final game
of the regular season. He then goes for nineteen for
one sixteen and three touchdowns in the wild are in
the Divisional playoff game against San Francisco, a little quieter
against the Rams in the NFC Championship, but still had
a touchdown in that game, and then goes twenty seven

carries for a buck thirty five touches the ball twenty
nine times more than he has in any game in
his career except for one. He had one thirty touch
game in his rookie season. But what a job this
guy has done down the stretch. I just kind of
want to ask you about how many of those bursts
by can the two long ones and some of the

ones that were, you know, in that ten to fifteen
to twenty yard variety, how much were those designed outside
runs because you talked about the outside run being potentially successful,
and how many was it ken starting looking like he's
going between the tackles and then bouncing it outside.

Well, the first five plays were all stretches, right, and
they had gone seven outside zones. The official play by play,
which will be etched in history, will say that they
were five five in runs and two off tackle. But
sometimes that's the thing about the outside zone. You can

have an aiming point to try and get outside the tackle,
but if the end doesn't hook the the end man
on the line, if the tight end doesn't hook the
end man online scrimmage, then it can.

Speaker 7 (01:34:06):
Go off tackle. But those were stress plays, don't kid yourself.
They were.

Speaker 8 (01:34:11):
There was not a single inside run in the UH
in the first quarter. Then they started to have inside runs,
you know. Now, the first play was it was ten
yards but in the second quarter they started to run
some duo and some inside zone. Those are like between
the guard type plays, and we talked about we talked.

It out with Mike that I'd mentioned to Mike.

I said a few weeks back, Igo, Hey, they've deepened
his position a little.

Speaker 7 (01:34:42):
And because I'm watching, I go that looks really deep.
I went back and watched the forty.

Nine or week one tape to see where his heels were,
and so they've deepened them a little. And in the
telecast you had Collins were talking about it was reminiscent
of Levy and Bell.

The the guy that that you know, the all time
most casual running back I've ever seen.

He would never least stop behind the line of scrim and.

Just spot so so canine on his inside runs. On
his outside runs, he's bursting to try to get the outside.
He makes his decision after three steps. You make the
cut on your fifth step if you want to go
north with the stretch. So the game plan on the
stretch and by the way, his ability to to to

get bounced back behind the line usually if if a
running back, if he has to, if he has to
on a stress play, if he has to give ground
off of his path, the pursuit's gonna come. You got
no chance of uh. And and and the stress play
wasn't great for them. But but I'll tell you what Kubiak,
we had talked about what they might try and do.

(01:35:50):
As I said, it was the first seven plays, we're
we're trying to get outside now.

Speaker 6 (01:35:55):
Uh.

The the the inside runs. His his ability to kind
of just like pick and choose.

It's because he has that burst and he has the
strengthen his legs that that a defensive lineman is gonna
get an arm tackle on his thigh is gonna I
should say, he is going to get the opportunity to
get an arm tackle on his thighs.

But he's so strong that he runs through his arm tackles.

If you're a defensive lineman and you're gonna tackle Kenneth Walker,
you better get him set or cut. You better get
all of his torso, all of his weight, because if
you think you can, you can just be half blocked

of Famer. If he's not, then everyone should be replaced
on that committee. Just the Pro Bowls alone make him

the list of guys, you know, I mean they were
an elite defense with Hall of Fame players and Pro
Bowlers all the way through. Offensively, they were I mean,

Marshawn you know, vintage Russ was unbelievable, Like good Russ
was a really good quarterback, good offensive line, and that
team was just chock full of attitude and stars all
the way through. This team, Yes, Jackson Smith and Jabo
was the offensive Player of the Year. And had an
incredible season. Sam Darnold had a bounce back year as well.

But the defense had a bunch of guys, a bunch
of dudes. And so when I look at this team
in twenty compared to twenty thirteen or even that Sonics
team who you mentioned that, like you and I were
old enough for remember that team. I love that team,
Like that's probably still my favorite team and always will
be my favorite team. I compare that team to the
twenty thirteen Seahawks. They were a bunch of guys with attitudes,

big coach, big rims, big cars, all that kind of stuff.
This team was different, man, This team was more relatable.
This team is like just kind of a bunch of
pretty good guys.

the players you talk about, just the quality guys they are,

a couple of weeks leading up the Super Bowl, we
went back and we played a couple of interviews back

kind of said the same thing, be as I think
this team's like on the brink. I think this team's
on the verge. And that was back in March of
last year. And then I had Jaron on I've known,

I mean, I've covered Jaren and you know, do the
TV stuff. I had a pretty good relations with Jaren
for years and I I can talk to him on
and he's one of the few guys I could talk
to on and off the air. And I remember asking
him off the air before we did the interview. I said, dude, seriously,
what the hell are you doing? Like why are you here?
Like I like, again, I'll go back twenty thirteen, Hugh

and Dick, you guys know this that team. Those dudes
weren't showing up for those OTAs like they got they
were too big for that stuff. And he's like, no, man,

And guess what, guys, We're going to do it all
again on Wednesday. Can't wait.

And I'm glad you brought that up because I actually
had a conversation with my brother in the seats today
and he's got a ten year old in the seven
year old, and I said, dude, take those kids out
of school.

Oh, get him down there, because I told him, I said, listen,
I actually did remember the Sonics Championship. I was just
about five years old and my parents didn't take me
out of school. And I told my brother, I said,

Yeah to that parade. So what did I do when
my kid was in kindergarten.

I took him out of school to watch the twenty
thirteen parade, and I'm gonna do it again. My daughter

my son remembered that title. I'm taking both my son
and my daughter out of school on Wednesday so everybody
can get a chance to and embrace that whole thing.

will be forever grateful. And he took him down there.

handed the baton. Things were just, you know, so gut
wrenching with the manner in which their season ended, and
then for Seattle somewhat unexpectedly to kind of take the
baton and kind of emotionally and say, okay, let me

try do our best. Like the Seahawks, we'll do our
best to kind of, uh, you know, assuage that that pain.

Not of course, I know that they weren't literally thinking that,
but it's like that's how it inspire. And so how
did run? And now too long trophy? I find myself.

I'm not an old man, but I'm not a young
man either, and I'm drawn more to the people, you know,
I mean, I'm going to root for the Seahawks and
the Mariners and the when the Sonics when they come back.
Because I'm a seatellite, but I find myself more like, hey,

are like and the two principles. For me, you're gonna

say John Sneyder, we've known John Sneyder, but we're just
getting to know Mike McDonald. And for me, to the
degree that I have learned about Mike McDonald and Sam Darnold,
those are you know, there's only two guys that get
a win loss record, the head coach and the quarterback.
And the people in Mike McDonald who he is, Hussey Mils.

You know, did you notice when they handed him the
trophy he wouldn't lift it up himself. He said, Canine
get over here, you put your hands on this trophy.
It says if he says, I never want to have
a photo where I'm the only guy holding this trophy

I love Mike McDonald what I know of him, and
Sam Donald could not be a more likable quarterback. So
the people that were right at the center of this again,

drawn in, And so I just I couldn't feel better
about the people that are in those positions. But the
job they did is just next level, just next level.
Mike McDonald, I'll hold of what I said. I think
he's the best defensive mind on the planet. I gave

a lot of thought before I said that, uh in
the day after they acquired and watched a lot of
tape before I said, took a deep breath, I said,
am I really going to say this? Am I really
going to say this? Can I defend this? Is this
like just me off my rocker, you know? And so
uh man, I'm just all in. And I couldn't be
happier for the twelves that have been so great all
the years at eny right.

My mouth is sore from all the smile and I've

that was just as stressful and crazy as it could
possibly be. This was just this this calm that I

felt all week long. It just continued into the stadium
and it continued into the first quarter and the second quarter,
and they just weren't scoring in the third quarter, and
they just weren't scoring, and it was just like, yeah,
I got mean, honestly, I didn't get I didn't get
nervous at all. At one point in the game, not
one point in the game did I get nervous at all.
We had a nineteen nothing lead. I'm like, listen, they're

not scoring three touchdowns in the last ten minutes of
the football game.

That's not going to happen. So I wasn't nervous at all.

in the NFL, and we lost on a last second

with Softy and I said, Dave, I the upside of
this team is totally different than I thought it was.
I thought the upside of the football team at the
beginning year, I had him eleven and six. That was
my preseason prediction. I was higher than most had him
eleven and six. At the beginning of the season, our
whole show was right about there. I think Jackson was
ten and seven, Softie was ten and seven. I was

eleven and six. We were all like, hey, maybe win
the division, but probably not, probably be a wild card team,
probably have to go on the road. If you get
a good matchup, you can win a game on the road,
and then you're probably done. And then but you took
a step from last year where you didn't make the playoffs,

dep in the process, and we were probably a year away.

But once we lost to the Rams in the fashion
that we lost.

To the Rams, I was like, WHOA, if we can
