I'm gonna said Friday, Thursday night, right here on ninety
three three KJRFM. We are through pick number eight of
the NFL Draft. Let me get your recap real quick.
For Nana Mendoza no Shock to the Raiders at one,
David Bailey edge rusher, Texas Tech to the Jets.

Julian Love running back Notre Dame Arizona, Tennessee took Cardinal
Tate wide receiver, Ohio State. The Giants took arvl Reese
edge rusher, Ohio State at five. Kansas City moved up
three spots to take the Browns pick at six, and
they replaced Trent mcnuffee McDuffie with Mansour Delanne quarterback out
of LSU. At number six, Washington, the Commanders took Tony

Styles linebacker Ohio State, and the Saints just recently Jordan
Tyson wide receiver ASU that puts the Browns now on
the clock with the Chiefs old pick at number nine
to Roger Goodell. We go, let's find out what the
Browns do at number nine.

With the ninth pick in the twenty twenty sixth NFL Draft.

The Cleveland brown select Spencer Fono, tackle Utah.

Spencer Fano, the first offensive lineman tackle from Utah, goes
to the Browns at number nine with the pick they
got from the Chiefs. Kyle Whittingham no longer at Utah,
by the way, but he's got a draft pick in
Spencer Fano in the top ten here.

Yeah, and both the Utah tackles are projected to go
very high, and usually it's a left tackle that goes first. Overall,
this was a right tackle with relatively short arms. In fact,
the third percentile in he's got thirty two and a half.
That is third percentile. But six six three eleven. This
(01:59):
is a class of offensive tackles. There's a lot of
big dudes who can really move. At at six six
three eleven, he ran a four to nine. That's ninety
six percentile of offensive tackles in the last few decades
at the Combine outline Outland Trophy winner as the best
offensive linement in college football. And uh, now he he
(02:23):
is an elite mover and uh in terms of his
run blocking. Uh, but those outliers with the size, Uh,
you know, this was a tackle group that's relatively deep,
but no real star at the top. Yeah. Yeah, in
that sense, it's somewhat like the defensive end alignment too.

I think I'm gonna say something I've never say said
on Draft day ever. I think the Browns won the
first ten picks of the draft because they got two
extra picks. And really, do we know there's any difference
between the sixth and the ninth pick. I mean, they
got the best tackle in the draft, consensus best tackle
in the draft, and and they got two extra picks.
I think it's well done by the Browns.

Yeah, you can, you can say for sure unless they
wanted another position, but if they wanted an offensive lineman,
they had everybody available to right, yep, right, And so
we know, you know, it's like when Seattle tells you
that Devin Witherspoon was the number one dB on the board,
and Jackson Smith was and Jigmo was the number one
wide receivers they got proof. You believe them because they're

all on the board. That's right. Right, Well, let me
just tell you this.

We are moving so fast, by the way, that we
did not get the Giants pick at number ten. It's
already in and we have back to back offensive lineman
Francis Maui and goa that's how you say his name,
Dick out of Miami just went to the Giants at
number ten. So you wonder again they had their pick
the Browns diad of offensive lineman, did they get the
right guy? Well, the Giants just took the other guy

at number ten. You the just took Francis Maui and
going oh, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, it is going fast. Yeah,
they're going fast.

Yeah. Now that that's another right tackle with short arms
thirty three and a quarter nineteen percentile but forty two
straight starts. He's a young man, isn't he isn't what's
he is?

Two brothers that played at Wazoo, by the way, both
of them, So there you go, yeah whatever that means.

Yeah, you know, I think that there's a similarity to
Penny Suwell coached by Maria Cristobald and obviously The Island Connection,
and and starred as a young guy, you know, started
as a freshman. He's got forty two straight starts. You know,
if there's if there's any questions about it. You got
some arm length limitations that we said sometimes he gets
(04:48):
over extended and on the ground a little bit too much,
and you know, there may be some question as to
whether or not he he ever is brought down inside
to play guard. But you know, he doesn't have the
length to play a blindside tackle. He's a right tackle
at at Miami, but well coached, you know. And and uh,
(05:10):
Mario Chrismol has another uh top ten or yeah, top
ten tackle, yes, balley tackle that he coached.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well that's the that's the pick that the Giants got.
It's funny. I'm sitting looking here at my my draft order. Yeah,
I'm asking Jackson, who are the Bengals taking. He's like,
what are you talking about? This had not been updated
to reflect the Dexter Lawrence trade. My sheet here, so
I'm losing my mind. So the Giants took the Bengals
pick at ten in the Dexter Lawrence trade. Uh, he's
(05:38):
now a Bengal and now Francis malwy and goa offensive
tackle out of Miami, is now a member of the Giants.
We also, by the way, have another move. Everybody's moving
up like one two spots. Kansas City moved up three.
Dallas has now moved up one spot and they now
own the Dolphins pick at number eleven. This is the
first of two picks so far in this round for them.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
They could that could.

Obviously they're gonna up to get a twenty with a
pick they got from Green Bay and the Micah Parsons deal.
Dak Prescott's already in year eleven. There unbelievable. He's got
two playoff wins, one against US Dick. Cowboys finished second
total offense, seventh in scoring, but they were dead last
in defense last year, only team in the NFL to
a lot more than thirty points.

You would think that if they're moving up, they're moving
up to get a defender.

Yeah, Caleb Downs still there, right, Rubin Bain's still there.
I mean, you got two really really elite players at
that position still there, and I think Dallas had their
sights on a guy and right after the Giants basically
traded Dexter Lawrence for Francis malahin Gooa.

Yeah, well Miami's getting two fifth rounders, by the way,
to drop down one spot.

So Jerry's got his eye on somebody here. Hugh, Well,
there's been speculation that he'd be going after Caleb Downs.
Their their pass defense was just awful, and Downs is uh,
you know, butt for his size, right, This guy, and
many people think is the best football in the draft,
has just next level almost uncanny recognition and intelligence and

anticipation and so so any physical limitations he has, you know,
he's a high end processor.
Speaker 6 (07:17):
And by the way, he is the biggest faller because
Downs closed to be minus six hundred to be a
top ten pick, right, he is not a top ten pick,
so he has been the biggest faller in the draft
thus far.

Candy, Well, I'll tell I can I can tell you
It's interesting for me, you know, being on this thirty
thirteen we talked about Caleb Downs for and I basically
just sat and listened. But I just all these GMS,
former GMS coaches, a lot of them want to be unanimous.
But you know the names. If you're a football fan,

and talked about downs forever, and a number of them said,
I can go right down the highway and get a
guy that's five eleven to there's like like all throughout
Texas High School you got guys like this, a dime
a dozen like there's there is You just mentioned his fall. Yeah,
(08:11):
yeah you could because a he's an incredible football player
and and go ahead, no, no, go ahead, finish that thought.
He's an incredible football player. But the reasons he's not
a top ten and why you'd have lost your money
in the in the what Dick said on the bet
is because of the size. And that's it. There's nothing else.

Yeah, Jackson, you're ready for the Cowboys by now. All right, Well,
we're gonna find out what Dallas will do here at
number eleven in a moment, because they have traded with
the Dolphins. The Dolphins that will be on the clock
at number twelve, and their prize for moving back one
selection was an extra two fifth round draft picks from
the Cowboys. So Mendoza number one to the Raiders, David

Bailey edge rusher to the Jets, Julian Love went to Arizona,
Cardinal Tate went to the Titans RVL rees to the Giants,
Mansword Delaine to Kansas City after they did a deal
with the Browns to move up to six. The Commanders
took Tony Styles, New Orleans took Jordan Tyson Cleveland, then
took Spencer Fano tackle Utah. Giants took Francis Maui and

goa offensive tackle Miami. Let's find out now why the
Cowboys gave up two fifth rounders to move up one
spot and make a pick at number eleven.

makes so much sense. Worst pass defense in the NFL
twenty ninth and turnover differential, second to last in passer rating,
and now they've got Caleb Down safety in their secondary.
You got to figure out the George Pickens thing, right,
Rumors he may have signed his tenders that right, Dick,
So we'll see Ceedee Lamb, Jake Ferguson, Javonte Williams. But
they needed some help on defense real quick, Yeah, yeah,

real quick. Sees it before it happens.

His anticipation is his superpower is a true chess piece.

and think about this, does you remind you of anybody?
By the way, Well, I'm gonna make a point. Okay,
you saw the documentary of Jerry Jones going back and
thinking about the nineties and the three Super Bowls in
four years. I was on that team. The strong safety

was Darren Woodson, who is who every year has come
up for the Hall of Fame hasn't quite made it.
But but if if Jerry Jones is feeling nostalgic about
how championship football looks, they had a really bright safety
in Darren Woodson, borderline hall of famer, and you know
that may have been an element that forces them or

you know, entices them to move up and make this pick.

Round one the NFL Draft.

The Dolphins are now on the clock. After a trade
with Dallas at number twelve. They took two fifth rounders
from the Cowboys to drop down one spot.
Speaker 8 (11:27):
Let's find out what they did with that pick. At
number twelve, with the twelfth.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Pick in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft, the Miami
Dolphins select Cayden Proctor, tackle Alabama.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
All right, had three of the last four picks or tackle.
Spencer Fino went to the Browns, Francis Mawanoo went to
the Giants at ten, and now Caitlin de bor has
got a first round offensive lineman Hugh and Cayden Proctor
to the Dolphins. That puts the Rams on the clock
at thirteen. But yeah, what do you make a proct
be a little run on tackles?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Yeah. The biggest human being I scouted this year six
six and a half, three hundred and fifty two pounds
over the database. That's the ninety seven percentile for offensive
tackles in weight. Here's a guy that won the sec
Jacob's Blocking Trophy winn Or when I when I watch
him that obviously the power shows up over and over again.
(12:23):
But and you look at this pedigree. He was the
former number one offensive tackle recruit in the country, So
this guy was destined for this spot. Played through a
torn labor them so toughness matters here, concerns inconsistent hand placement,
so the technique I think can improve. He was only
(12:44):
twenty second percentile in his ten yards split. That's the
first ten yards of his forties, So I think that
there's a certain lack of explosion there. You know, he
obviously makes up for it with his size, but there's
there's some tightness in his hips. When you see him
in space trying to locate you know, second level, third
level guys on screens and and pinning polls and trying

to get out in space. I think the the athleticism
just so, so you're leaving at the best part about
this pick. He can run and catch, yeah as well. Yeah,
Georgia cutches the smoke screen in a critical time down
in the red zone. That's right. They how many times
I know they threw to him a couple.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
I think he had five carries last year, five carries
for sixteen yards. I don't see his catches, but yeah,
they had Kalin and Ryan Grubby on this.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
It may have been it may.
Speaker 6 (13:33):
Have been correct, but did they get the order right
in the offensive tackles Fano, Malingo and Procer Well.

I think that it kind of depends on what you want.
I mean, if you want to if you want to
go downhill in the running game and that's more important
to you, that's probably then Yeah, that's Proctor. I think
there's some other guys here that are better athletes. I think.

I mean, the GM of the Dolphins has said that
Devan a Chan's not going anywhere, and yeah, I mean
they're giving him some help with Caden Proctor. Now he
hasn't signed a contract yet, he's got one more year left.
Technically he's gonna be a freezing at the end of

this year. They could franchise him and keep him hanging around.
But that's the kind of guy I think a lot
of us would have loved the Seahawks to go after.
But those days are getting slimmerd by the by the second.

Oh absolutely, I mean it just looks less and less
likely that we're gonna get to you know. Doesn't mean
we can't trade for a different running back, but that
was just the one we had circled.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
All right, we're gonna wait for the Rams pick here
there on the clock at number thirteen. This is the
pick the Rams got from Atlanta last year when they
gave up number twenty six and a third round comp
so the Falcons, by the way, could move up and
draft James Pierce. Remember that in return, he had a
good year last year, really good year. He's in some
hot water right now, but the word is going to

be fine. In return, the Rams got this pick here,
plus a second and a seventh last year.

Ty Simpson, quarterback, Alabama, six foot one, two hundred eleven pounds,

Simpson spent four seasons at Tuscaloosa after a five star
high school career, but as just one, it's a starter
under his belting college football, Simpson showed stretches of brilliance
in twenty twenty five, but it's his lack of consistency
and experience that leave.

Questions at the next level.
Speaker 7 (16:24):
Simpson is the son of a coach that has good
mechanics but doesn't possess superior armstrng. The twenty three year
old has good foot speed and can elude pressure, but
his smaller frame could make him susceptible to injures.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
All right, well, there's one thing that comes to mind
with this pick. Matt Stafford's thirty eight years old and
has one more year left and hiss deal. And you
could argue, well, what about getting a quarterback next year? Well,
if the Rams after the year they want to have,
they'll be picking in the late half of the first round.
Speaker 8 (16:50):
May not have access to those guys next season.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
They only have this pick here because of the trade
they got with the Falcons last year, and they just
used it on apparently Stafford's AIRBA.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, yeah, no, Look, it's a great pick for him personally.
I mean think he gets to go sit behind Stafford.
He only had a year starting at Alabama and uh here,
you know, he's playing in a division with uh with
good weather. He's playing at home good weather. Like if
he had gone to the AFC North with his small
(17:22):
hands and lack of arm strength, I think that'd be
a tough division. So, you know, playing in a really
relatively benign weather. Uh this you know for Sean McVay. Now,
I'm this is the first time I'm shocked, and I understand. Look,
forty years ago, I got drafted. I was the young
guy that got drafted in the third round of the
Rams and so so I and looking at you know,
(17:43):
I went I was the only quarterback under thirty this
guy comes to in a situation where he can, you know,
watch Stafford and and and yet the concern I have
when they had Jared Goff, Yeah they traded him. Why
because they wanted the extra horse power with that with
the arm of Matthew Stafford, and they had a damn
(18:05):
good quarterback. But to get next level, I'm I'm stunned.
I'm very surprised that that Sean McVay has targeted this
guy with a limited guy toolbox.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
There's two things that come to mind. Does this say
that Stafford's got one more year left and he's going
to retire. Has he already told them I'm giving you
one more year and I'm done? Because there were reports
that they were working on a deal for Stafford to
extend his contract. So does this say that that's not
going to happen. And then number two, what was the Rams'
biggest problem down the stretch corners? They got two of
them in free in the trade with McDuffie and Watson.

They already addressed that. Now they get the air apparent
to matt Stafford.
Speaker 6 (18:44):
This is a great day for ty Simpson. He couldn't
gone to a better place. But I think It's also
a great day for the Seahawks because the Rams didn't
get better in twenty twenty eight with their first or
twenty twenty six with their first round draft pick. They
may have gotten better down the road, and I don't
think it prevents Matthew Stafford for sign another contract. You
can sit to Ty Simpson for two years. You're the
center for one year. But Seahawk fans should be celebrating
(19:06):
right now that the Rams did not get better with
their first round pick for this year, and they got
a quarterback that a lot of people think has maybe
limited upside, might be a good quarterback, but might not
be a superstar.

That's the part that excites me because I think the
Rams did get better over the offseason. They added correct
I'm talking about today, but they are a better football
team they were at the end of the year because
of the free agents that they brought in. The question
is do they have enough receivers right now to to
Atwell's gone. They'll find somebody obviously later in the draft,
but I'm with Dick that if you're not really a
ty Simpson guy, hey, if they're planning on eventually, whether

in twenty seven or twenty eight turning it over to
this guy, and you're not high on him, then you're
you're doing today.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Well, let me make the argument for him. You go
watch the There was a four straight games where it's
the first time in at least se see history. Check
me on this might be NCAA history. I think it
might be the history of football that he had four
straight wins against top twenty teams. And so there was
a period there where Alamama after after having beaten Georgia

and Vanderbilt and whatever, the four teams were Georgia on
the road, possibly the most impressive win for the first
eight ten weeks of the season in all of college football.

Georg Vanderbilt, Missouri and Tennessee.

Yeah, and he was phenomenal.

And nine touchdowns one pick in those fours.

You see him drive the ball in the middle of
the field. Then then his arm deteriorated and and you
know he's he's kind of lollipopping there. Let's go to

Pick and they pickfl draft the Baltimore Raven Like Olive
Avenga Yowanne guard Penn State.

Who Vega Yoanne guard Penn State six foot four, three
hundred and twenty three pounds.

And we've got a big fell out here. We've got
an offensive line.

Oh god, you got an offensive live in in Moshi
yoone poem. They call him Vega for sure. But he
had a long four year career at Penn State as
a first team All American and first team All Big
Ten selection at six foot four, three twenty Yoanna excels
at using his power for drive blocking in both one

on one four double team situations. The biggest weakness in
his game right now, however, is his lateral quickness as
a block.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
Vega Owani uh, Penn State guard. He's from Graham Capus
in high school right here in the in the South End,
and he's now a member of the Baltimore Ravens. Uh
and their brand new head coach obviously and Jesse Minter.
But quick thought on uh Awanie going to Baltimore and
then wrap up.

The Simpson Yeah remember Tyler Lindenbaugh. Uh, he he left, Yes,
and the sent you know, the middle of that offensive
line went to the raiders. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and some others.
So big, big need. Here's a guy that is the
best pass protecting guard. You know, he has feet like
a tackle and production at thirty two starts. Now now
(22:32):
even for guards man, this is a short arm group
twenty six percentile in in arm length. Uh, you know,
blow average link limits. But uh, he's more more uh,
a guy that you could see his pass blocking skill
set looks like a tackle right right, but his frame
(22:53):
looks like a guard. So a great athlete and right
and in a position need for the Ravens.

Wrap up that Simpson conversation real quick.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
We've got to go to all. I know, whether it's
the injuries or the the the gastro appendonitis, whatever it
was that they got him down to one hundred and
ninety five pounds. He just wasn't as accurate, wasn't as
strong throwing the ball, you know, and his frame is
is relatively you know, unimpressive, not that tall six one
and an eighth.

We know why he passed up six and a half
million dollars because he had a guaranteed spot with the Rams.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
They must have told him.

Yeah, yeah, remember that conversation. We had the hell's he doing?

He's doing and that was what we all speculated, that
he's got to have some kind of a guarantee from
somebody that he's going first round.

Twentieth Yeah, Ty Simpson twentieth percentile in height, seventeenth percentile
in weight. You know, I compare him to an athletic
Kirk Cousins. Now he was. He was labeled a dual
threat coming out of high school. He had enough tape
on his Tennessee high school tape playing for his dad
with Reid options and the like that he's considered that
(24:04):
level an athlete. And so I think there's a speed
in some elusiveness there. I think he's probably better long
speed than he is shifty. But I mean, he's a
fairly decent athlete. But I don't know. I'm very surprised
the profile for a quarterback right that that Sean McVay seemed,
(24:25):
you know, the trade he made, as we said, with
Goff and Stafford doesn't fit this pick.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
There were reports he was gonna get six million bucks
to come back and play for somebody. Well, last year
the thirteenth pick got twenty five million dollars, so again,
good for him.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
Yeah, he's going to the Rams.

Ty Simpson goes to the Rams at number thirteen, a
bit of a shocker. And then Vega Iwana Guard Penn
State at a Graham Campausen just went to Baltimore at
fourteenth Bucks around the clock, gonna break come back with
round number one. Hawks still sitting there at thirty two.
Obviously a way to go, but we're gonna find out
in the next hour and a half or so what
the Hawks are up to. Tampa Bay up next on

Rubin Bain Junior's elite combination of explosive power and surprising
agility make him one of the top defensive players in
the draft. Bain finished the twenty twenty five season with
fifteen and a half tackles for loss and nine and
a half sacks, winning him the ACC Defensive Player of
the Year. Bain brings the strength of a defensive tackle
to the outside edge, providing him a high floor as

an NFL started.

How about that, Well, I think an interesting study because
when you watch him, you just look at his frame,
thick frame. There's a there's a violence to his game.
Heavy handed dude sets the edge, plays with an incredible tenacity.
You know, he just won't stay blocked, chase the ball,
high football character. You know, you just say, okay, watch

the tape and say what you know, does this guy
care about football? Does he love football? And the answer
is yes, yes, and yes, and and yet you look
at him and the big question that everybody's going to
talk about. He is in the first percentile in arm
leg Now first doesn't mean the best. That's the shortest, right,
(27:44):
There's only one since two thousand and three, there's only
been one edge that has had shorter arms. David Pollock, Yeah,
who didn't exactly make a big impression, but eighty three pressures.
Most in the FBS Pro Football focused at him at
a ninety two. Uh, that's that's an elite grade twenty
three and a half percent win grade win level. So

so I think that his relentlessness, his power, his character,
I think is the reason he's here, you know. And
and despite the fact he doesn't have top end athleticism,
that tie.

the New York Jets like Kenyan Sadiq tight.

Tight end Oregon six foot three one pounds, go to
the outside and a shout Sidi Sidik. That's a big
boy score for the Ducks. Sadiq is an excellent prospect.
He can run many routes. He's a superb athlete, including

a vertical jump of forty three and a half inches.
He could improve his blocking, but drafting Sadik to see
him work against the man coverage would be quite.

Enticing Kenyan Sadik.
Speaker 2 (29:23):
The first tight end goes to the Jets at number sixteen,
So their first round haul is David Bailey from Texas
Tech and now Kenyan Sadiq from Oregon. We saw him
play against the Dogson do a lot. Four catches for
eleven yards in that game against Washington. Stats were kind
of underwhelming, maybe a little bit overall for him last
(29:43):
year you at Oregon, but Kenyan Sadiq, I just went
to the Jets at number six.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
Yeah, and the Jets had a second round draft pick
last year, Mason Taylor. He caught forty four balls for
three hundred and sixty nine yards. But I think the
thinking there is that Sadiq represents, uh, you know, an athleticism.
They're putting an athlete on on the field that's just rare.
Remember Vernon Davis with the forty nine ers. He you know,
(30:08):
he has that type of athleticism. He has the fastest
forty time by a tight end ever recorded four three
nine sub four four obviously rare wide receiver speed. You
look at him, he's all yoked up, incredible body. You
think that he'd be uh has the potential to be
a relentless blocker, but uh, you know, there's you know,
(30:30):
I think that's still a work in progress. But he's
a guy that can get down the field. He can
catch the contested ball. You know, I think just under
six y three, they're you know there, he's not he
doesn't have prototypical height, but uh and and and oh furthermore,
seventh percentile in armlank. So there's some things about his
(30:51):
frame that are not ideal. But the athleticism, the the
speed and the ability to get in the air and
make and make the tough catch, be strong at the
point of tack. Dick. This guy, as you know, premiere
athleticism on the field. So Dieke the freak.

He's a pain in the ass for the Huskies. There's
a there's no question. But like I want to go
back to Bain. I'm chance to talk about Bain. Was
I told you my Jeremy Love was my favorite player
in college football to watch. It was in this draft class.
Bain was my favorite player down the stretch to watch
in the in the playoffs, And I mean, can we
can we say that Miami doesn't reach the title if
if there's no Ruben Bain, I mean, like he made

that much of an impact in the final four, in
the and in the playoffs. So you know, I think
that's a great pick for for the Bocks and the
Jets too.

I'm looking here at at our guy, Denzel Boston. How
far do we think he falls? Man, We're you know,
he's he's consensus projected right around twenty ish twenty two.

I thought it'd be because the obviously a j Brown
things going down, and they've signed a couple of guys
to be ready for him if they do trade him.
But if he's out the door, taking him at twenty three,
I mean, look still there, right, you got the yeah, yeah,
no doubt. I mean the Lions obviously have problems on defense.
I mean they're up now at number seventeen. They went
from seventh and scoring in twenty four to twenty second

last year, and they really only have one edge rusher.
I mean, is there an edge rusher here at seventeen
that's worth taking. They got Aiden Hutchinson, but their number
two guy, al KaDee Muhammad, is now with Tampa Bay
after eleven and a half sacks a year ago, so
they need some help on defense. They need to compliment
Aiden Hutchinson if they can on that side of the ball.
They still have Alman Ross, Saint Brown, they got Jamison Williams,

tackle on our mock yesterday? I think they may have
because the conversation was Taylor Decker asked for and was
granted his release. Then there was reports that the Lions
are gonna move Penne Sewel from right tackle to left tackle.

Well, they just.

Took Blake Miller, So tell me Blake Miller plays right tackle.

He does, so they can move now Penney Stewell to
left tackle.

Straight years right tackle every game, every snap that makes sense.
Penney Stewell just became the left tackle for the Lions. Yeah,
six six, three, seventeen and another one of these guys,
I'm telling you that, you know, they they got a
lot of monsters that can move. Here. Pretty good athlete here,
fifty fours starts, three thousand seven or seventy eight snaps guys,
(34:26):
Clemson all time record, the most experienced lineman in the class. Uh,
he's seen everything, obviously, and in fact, their opponents have
said that he's the best blocker they faced. Now, twenty
two penalties in his career, that's too much. Does not
generate elite power at the line of scrimmage. So I
(34:48):
think he's a better athlete than he is a maller.
He doesn't have the quickness, however, to play left tackle, apparently,
because all he's ever done is play right tackle. But
here's a point about the Lions. I happened to think
Jerry Goff is a not necessarily elite, but he's on
that next level, the cusp of elite. If he has protection,
(35:11):
every quarterback is going to play better with good protection.
I think the gap between Goff how he plays when
you give him good protection and how he plays when
you give him just average or poor protection, right, that
gap is as just about as big as any quarterback
in the league. So the Lions feel like when they
won fifteen games, when they were getting golf at a
(35:33):
pro Bowl level, they had great protection for him, and
they've seen their offensive line dwindling and they needed to supplant.

We mentioned that our mock drafter took a tackle for
the Lions. You know who he took yesterday, Blake Miller. Yeah, yeah,

Caleb Banks, defensive end out of Florida is the latest
pick there for the Minnesota Vikings at number eighteen. Obviously
a big time talent originally out of Detroit six six
and a quarter h three twenty seven, started his career
here with Louisville.

We started three games last year.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Because he missed most of the year with a foot
injury that required surgery. So clearly the Lions sees are
the Viking seats something in this guy that made them
feel good about the foot and feel good about the
player because he barely played last season.
Speaker 3 (37:15):
Yeah, and I think he's just kind of one of
these great looking athletes on the huff, you know, long legs,
high cut guy, long arms. So I think the athleticism
there is is more a fact that they're kind of
betting on. As you said, let's get healthy, let's reach
your potential. And this comes up all the time where
(37:36):
you say, all right, you're you're looking at the football production,
you're looking at the potential, and there's always a balance
there as to where you want to land. This guy
is more of the potential guy, you know, right, all
you want as an athlete and the frame and what
have you, but you know has been hindered. But you
see there's an explosiveness to him. My kid played at
(38:00):
Florida and was a teammate of his, and you know,
watching the Gators, I mean you could see whoa yeah
when he flashes, he wasn't hurt last year. If he
played a healthy full year, what he have been drafted higher,
you think, I think, so, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean yeah, certainly.

they replaced Trent mcnuffee McDuffie with Mansour Delanne quarterback out
of LSU. At number six, Washington, the Commanders took Tony

Styles linebacker Ohio State, and the Saints just recently Jordan
Tyson wide receiver ASU that puts the Browns now on
the clock with the Chiefs old pick at number nine
to Roger Goodell. We go, let's find out what the

Spencer Fano, the first offensive lineman tackle from Utah, goes
to the Browns at number nine with the pick they
got from the Chiefs. Kyle Whittingham no longer at Utah,
by the way, but he's got a draft pick in
Spencer Fano in the top ten here.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, and both the Utah tackles are projected to go
very high, and usually it's a left tackle that goes first. Overall,
this was a right tackle with relatively short arms. In fact,
the third percentile in he's got thirty two and a half.
That is third percentile. But six six three eleven. This
(01:59):
is a class of offensive tackles. There's a lot of
big dudes who can really move. At at six six
three eleven, he ran a four to nine. That's ninety
six percentile of offensive tackles in the last few decades
at the Combine outline Outland Trophy winner as the best
offensive linement in college football. And uh, now he he
(02:23):
is an elite mover and uh in terms of his
run blocking. Uh, but those outliers with the size, Uh,
you know, this was a tackle group that's relatively deep,
but no real star at the top. Yeah. Yeah, in
that sense, it's somewhat like the defensive end alignment too.
Speaker 6 (02:47):
I think I'm gonna say something I've never say said
on Draft day ever. I think the Browns won the
first ten picks of the draft because they got two
extra picks. And really, do we know there's any difference
between the sixth and the ninth pick. I mean, they
got the best tackle in the draft, consensus best tackle
in the draft, and and they got two extra picks.
I think it's well done by the Browns.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, you can, you can say for sure unless they
wanted another position, but if they wanted an offensive lineman,
they had everybody available to right, yep, right, And so
we know, you know, it's like when Seattle tells you
that Devin Witherspoon was the number one dB on the board,
and Jackson Smith was and Jigmo was the number one
wide receivers they got proof. You believe them because they're
(03:31):
all on the board. That's right. Right, Well, let me
just tell you this.

We are moving so fast, by the way, that we
did not get the Giants pick at number ten. It's
already in and we have back to back offensive lineman
Francis Maui and goa that's how you say his name,
Dick out of Miami just went to the Giants at
number ten. So you wonder again they had their pick
the Browns diad of offensive lineman, did they get the
right guy? Well, the Giants just took the other guy

at number ten. You the just took Francis Maui and
going oh, okay, okay, yeah, yeah, it is going fast. Yeah,

Yeah. Now that that's another right tackle with short arms
thirty three and a quarter nineteen percentile but forty two
straight starts. He's a young man, isn't he isn't what's

Penny Suwell coached by Maria Cristobald and obviously The Island Connection,
and and starred as a young guy, you know, started
as a freshman. He's got forty two straight starts. You know,
if there's if there's any questions about it. You got
some arm length limitations that we said sometimes he gets
(04:48):
over extended and on the ground a little bit too much,
and you know, there may be some question as to
whether or not he he ever is brought down inside
to play guard. But you know, he doesn't have the
length to play a blindside tackle. He's a right tackle
at at Miami, but well coached, you know. And and uh,
(05:10):
Mario Chrismol has another uh top ten or yeah, top
ten tackle, yes, balley tackle that he coached.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Well that's the that's the pick that the Giants got.
It's funny. I'm sitting looking here at my my draft order. Yeah,
I'm asking Jackson, who are the Bengals taking. He's like,
what are you talking about? This had not been updated
to reflect the Dexter Lawrence trade. My sheet here, so
I'm losing my mind. So the Giants took the Bengals
pick at ten in the Dexter Lawrence trade. Uh, he's
(05:38):
now a Bengal and now Francis malwy and goa offensive
tackle out of Miami, is now a member of the Giants.
We also, by the way, have another move. Everybody's moving
up like one two spots. Kansas City moved up three.
Dallas has now moved up one spot and they now
own the Dolphins pick at number eleven. This is the
first of two picks so far in this round for them.

Obviously they're gonna up to get a twenty with a

in defense last year, only team in the NFL to

Yeah, well Miami's getting two fifth rounders, by the way,
to drop down one spot.

So Jerry's got his eye on somebody here. Hugh, Well,
there's been speculation that he'd be going after Caleb Downs.
Their their pass defense was just awful, and Downs is uh,
you know, butt for his size, right, This guy, and
many people think is the best football in the draft,
has just next level almost uncanny recognition and intelligence and

anticipation and so so any physical limitations he has, you know,
he's a high end processor.

And by the way, he is the biggest faller because
Downs closed to be minus six hundred to be a
top ten pick, right, he is not a top ten pick,
so he has been the biggest faller in the draft
thus far.

Candy, Well, I'll tell I can I can tell you
It's interesting for me, you know, being on this thirty
thirteen we talked about Caleb Downs for and I basically
just sat and listened. But I just all these GMS,
former GMS coaches, a lot of them want to be unanimous.
But you know the names. If you're a football fan,
(07:50):
and talked about downs forever, and a number of them said,
I can go right down the highway and get a
guy that's five eleven to there's like like all throughout
Texas High School you got guys like this, a dime
a dozen like there's there is You just mentioned his fall. Yeah,
(08:11):
yeah you could because a he's an incredible football player
and and go ahead, no, no, go ahead, finish that thought.
He's an incredible football player. But the reasons he's not
a top ten and why you'd have lost your money
in the in the what Dick said on the bet
is because of the size. And that's it. There's nothing else.

Yeah, Jackson, you're ready for the Cowboys by now. All right, Well,
we're gonna find out what Dallas will do here at
number eleven in a moment, because they have traded with

Yeah. The biggest human being I scouted this year six

over the database. That's the ninety seven percentile for offensive
tackles in weight. Here's a guy that won the sec
Jacob's Blocking Trophy winn Or when I when I watch
him that obviously the power shows up over and over again.

But and you look at this pedigree. He was the
former number one offensive tackle recruit in the country, So
this guy was destined for this spot. Played through a
torn labor them so toughness matters here, concerns inconsistent hand placement,
so the technique I think can improve. He was only

twenty second percentile in his ten yards split. That's the
first ten yards of his forties, So I think that
there's a certain lack of explosion there. You know, he
obviously makes up for it with his size, but there's
there's some tightness in his hips. When you see him
in space trying to locate you know, second level, third
level guys on screens and and pinning polls and trying

to get out in space. I think the the athleticism
just so, so you're leaving at the best part about
this pick. He can run and catch, yeah as well. Yeah,
Georgia cutches the smoke screen in a critical time down
in the red zone. That's right. They how many times
I know they threw to him a couple.

I think he had five carries last year, five carries
for sixteen yards. I don't see his catches, but yeah,
they had Kalin and Ryan Grubby on this.

a tough division. So, you know, playing in a really
relatively benign weather. Uh this you know for Sean McVay. Now,
I'm this is the first time I'm shocked, and I understand. Look,
forty years ago, I got drafted. I was the young
guy that got drafted in the third round of the
Rams and so so I and looking at you know,

I went I was the only quarterback under thirty this
guy comes to in a situation where he can, you know,
watch Stafford and and and yet the concern I have
when they had Jared Goff, Yeah they traded him. Why
because they wanted the extra horse power with that with
the arm of Matthew Stafford, and they had a damn

good quarterback. But to get next level, I'm I'm stunned.
I'm very surprised that that Sean McVay has targeted this
guy with a limited guy toolbox.

There's two things that come to mind. Does this say
that Stafford's got one more year left and he's going
to retire. Has he already told them I'm giving you
one more year and I'm done? Because there were reports
that they were working on a deal for Stafford to
extend his contract. So does this say that that's not
going to happen. And then number two, what was the Rams'
biggest problem down the stretch corners? They got two of
them in free in the trade with McDuffie and Watson.

They already addressed that. Now they get the air apparent
to matt Stafford.

This is a great day for ty Simpson. He couldn't
gone to a better place. But I think It's also
a great day for the Seahawks because the Rams didn't

think it prevents Matthew Stafford for sign another contract. You
can sit to Ty Simpson for two years. You're the

limited upside, might be a good quarterback, but might not

in some elusiveness there. I think he's probably better long
speed than he is shifty. But I mean, he's a
fairly decent athlete. But I don't know. I'm very surprised
the profile for a quarterback right that that Sean McVay seemed,

you know, the trade he made, as we said, with
Goff and Stafford doesn't fit this pick.

the tape and say what you know, does this guy
care about football? Does he love football? And the answer
is yes, yes, and yes, and and yet you look
at him and the big question that everybody's going to
talk about. He is in the first percentile in arm
leg Now first doesn't mean the best. That's the shortest, right,

There's only one since two thousand and three, there's only
been one edge that has had shorter arms. David Pollock, Yeah,
who didn't exactly make a big impression, but eighty three pressures.
Most in the FBS Pro Football focused at him at
a ninety two. Uh, that's that's an elite grade twenty

so I think that his relentlessness, his power, his character,

He could improve his blocking, but drafting Sadik to see
him work against the man coverage would be quite.

The first tight end goes to the Jets at number sixteen,
So their first round haul is David Bailey from Texas
Tech and now Kenyan Sadiq from Oregon. We saw him

eleven yards in that game against Washington. Stats were kind
of underwhelming, maybe a little bit overall for him last

year you at Oregon, but Kenyan Sadiq, I just went
to the Jets at number six.

Yeah, and the Jets had a second round draft pick
last year, Mason Taylor. He caught forty four balls for
three hundred and sixty nine yards. But I think the
thinking there is that Sadiq represents, uh, you know, an athleticism.
They're putting an athlete on on the field that's just rare.
Remember Vernon Davis with the forty nine ers. He you know,

he has that type of athleticism. He has the fastest
forty time by a tight end ever recorded four three
nine sub four four obviously rare wide receiver speed. You
look at him, he's all yoked up, incredible body. You
think that he'd be uh has the potential to be
a relentless blocker, but uh, you know, there's you know,

I think that's still a work in progress. But he's
a guy that can get down the field. He can
catch the contested ball. You know, I think just under
six y three, they're you know there, he's not he
doesn't have prototypical height, but uh and and and oh furthermore,
seventh percentile in armlank. So there's some things about his
(30:51):
frame that are not ideal. But the athleticism, the the
speed and the ability to get in the air and
make and make the tough catch, be strong at the
point of tack. Dick. This guy, as you know, premiere
athleticism on the field. So Dieke the freak.

He's a pain in the ass for the Huskies. There's
a there's no question. But like I want to go
back to Bain. I'm chance to talk about Bain. Was
I told you my Jeremy Love was my favorite player
in college football to watch. It was in this draft class.
Bain was my favorite player down the stretch to watch
in the in the playoffs, And I mean, can we
can we say that Miami doesn't reach the title if
if there's no Ruben Bain, I mean, like he made

that much of an impact in the final four, in
the and in the playoffs. So you know, I think
that's a great pick for for the Bocks and the
Jets too.

Aiden Hutchinson if they can on that side of the ball.

Clemson all time record, the most experienced lineman in the class. Uh,
he's seen everything, obviously, and in fact, their opponents have
said that he's the best blocker they faced. Now, twenty
two penalties in his career, that's too much. Does not
generate elite power at the line of scrimmage. So I

think he's a better athlete than he is a maller.
He doesn't have the quickness, however, to play left tackle, apparently,
because all he's ever done is play right tackle. But
here's a point about the Lions. I happened to think
Jerry Goff is a not necessarily elite, but he's on
that next level, the cusp of elite. If he has protection,
(35:11):
every quarterback is going to play better with good protection.
I think the gap between Goff how he plays when
you give him good protection and how he plays when
you give him just average or poor protection, right, that
gap is as just about as big as any quarterback
in the league. So the Lions feel like when they
won fifteen games, when they were getting golf at a
(35:33):
pro Bowl level, they had great protection for him, and
they've seen their offensive line dwindling and they needed to supplant.

Yeah, and I think he's just kind of one of
these great looking athletes on the huff, you know, long legs,
high cut guy, long arms. So I think the athleticism
there is is more a fact that they're kind of
betting on. As you said, let's get healthy, let's reach
your potential. And this comes up all the time where
(37:36):
you say, all right, you're you're looking at the football production,
you're looking at the potential, and there's always a balance
there as to where you want to land. This guy
is more of the potential guy, you know, right, all
you want as an athlete and the frame and what
have you, but you know has been hindered. But you
see there's an explosiveness to him. My kid played at
(38:00):
Florida and was a teammate of his, and you know,
watching the Gators, I mean you could see whoa yeah
when he flashes, he wasn't hurt last year. If he
played a healthy full year, what he have been drafted higher,
you think, I think, so, yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean yeah, certainly.
