All right, here we go, boys, the moment we've been
waiting for the start of the twenty twenty six NFL Draft.
We are live at the Virginia Mason Athletics Center the
shores of Lake Washington, across the street from Dino's Pub
in Renton, where we spent yesterday for the mock draft.

the first round will be up at number thirty two
if they do make that selection. John Schneider obviously has
made it clear to everybody he would love to trade
out of that pick, and I think it's important, guys
to just get people caught up on where the Hawks
are with all their picks and how they got here.
They have thirty two overall in the first round, sixty
four overall in the side around the last pick of
the third round at ninety six. No cop picks this year,

a ton next year, but none this year. Then they'll
be up again on Saturday, pick number one eighty eight
in the sixth round. The fourth and fifth round pick
Dick that the Seahawks had is now property of the
Saints and the Rashid Shaheed deal. The sixth round pick
went to Jacksonville for Roy Robertson Harris, whoops right, and
the seventh round draft pick went to the Browns for

Nick Harris, who sent you back a sixth round draft
pick in that deal. So that's how the Hawks got
to where they are today. They are changing the time
limit from ten minutes to eight overall in round number one,
and as soon as Roger Goodell takes the stage here

to give you a little bit of a flavory hue
of what was going on in Pittsburgh. I mean, I
love this that they're moving this around every year. I'm
hoping that one year we get to hear in Seattle.
I think it's one of the best decisions they've made.
I mean, it was really a great event in radio
haul every year then, but now having the city's uh oh.

Three four hundred, five hundred thousand in some of these cities.

Up, Yeah, they shut school down for these kids to
watch the draft. It's seven o'clock at night on the

No, man, they just said, you know what, you gotta
get all Judy. We want the kids getting all ready
for this one. Let's but okay, let's talk about where
we're at. Because the Hawks, we just got done telling
you four picks for now. If they do, guys, take
those four selections and make all of them, it would
be the fewest picks they've made in five years since

the famous twenty twenty one draft for infamous Do you
remember those three guys anybody stone for Sight twenty twenty one?

I'm gonna tell you there two in the interest of time,
DS Ridge and Trey Brown. They did not have a
first run draft pick that year because of Jamal Adams
because the trade with the Jets.

So it's been that long, and.

That's the few wis they've ever made, by the way,
in twenty twenty one. So we talked about this, Hugh earlier,
that there's all of a sudden, some decent sized needs
on this football team and not a lot of draft
capital to get it done with. I mean, this is
this is John Schneider losing his entire savings and having
just a couple of chips left and going back to

the casino to see if he can build that nest
egg back up.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
This is going to be a challenge for him this week. Yeah,
you know, we talked about running back. I happens to
think that as presently constituted the most dire need for them.
I don't want to he's dire maybe as a word,
but the most significant need would be at running back, right.
And you know, people say, well, you can get on
players in the set in later in the draft, and

he pointed to Chris Carson. Chris Carson was a seventh rounder,
but there was also four other Chris Carson is one
of five seventh rounders that John Schneider's taking. The other
ones are kiro Small, Zach Brooks, Kenny Macintosh, Damian Martinez,
you know, third round or CJ. Prosis. There was injuries there,
Robert Turbin and DJ Dallas in the fourth round, fifth round,

Alex Collins who actually did okay once he left seatle
who who was it, Baltimore, Baltimore? Yeah was Baltimore, Yeah,
Spencer Ware and Travis Homer in the sixth round. So
any way you slice it, and then going back to
the second round, there's been three second rounders Christin, Michael
Kenneth Walker, Zach Charbonnatt, so kind of anywhere you slice it,

they're under fifty percent and so, and obviously the further
you go down the draft, the less likely you are
to have somebody who's impactful.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Just seems like John Schneider has positions that he's really
really good at drafting, and I think cornerback is one
of them. I think he's pretty good at the at
the edge, He's gotten decent edges, maybe not star edges,
but it seems to me like at their position right now,
at thirty two, you got a host of corners supposed

to go right around there. You've got a host of
edges they're supposed to go right around there, and you
got a host of guards that should.
Speaker 3 (08:06):

So I'm I'm just leaning let's just say you have
to take thirty two. Nobody wants your crappy pick, right, So, no,
you had to take it thirty two. I'm saying, all right,
of those three positions which one of these guys have
fallen to us that we thought maybe have gone would
go twenty one to twenty two or twenty three, and
then grab that guy and then hopefully you can fill
those other two needs. Look, if you get a corner,

hopefully you can get an edge later, a guard later,
and a running back later with your four picks.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
I never think that any team ever says, truly that
we take the best player on the board, because they
evaluate all the players. Even even you take the Chicago Bears,
they're evaluating every quarterback. They don't just say, well, we
got Caleb Williams. We're not gonna scout the quarterback. That's
not how the NFL operates. So here Chicago's at twenty five.
(08:56):
If let's say they had thought that ty Simpson was
really like a you know, top fifteen level player, and
ty Simpson were to fall to twenty five, the Bears
are not taking him. And and so I think it's
it's the best player available at a position of needs,
at a position of need. And I don't think that's
(09:17):
binary either. I think that there's there's a great a
gradient to that. I think you have really really uh uh,
you know, some teams have dire needs obviously, and then
you know there's very significant needs, and then there's modern needs,
and then there's mild needs and and and so I
think for Seattle, who knows who would fall there? How
(09:39):
do you rank?

How do you rank those needs that I just gave
it without running back? We know running backs number one
guard corner edge, I.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Would say corner guard edge. But I think that I
think that the deepest draft of the deepest deepest position
his edge. Yeah, I mean you've got you know, you've
got some guys here that that may fall and and
(10:11):
that I don't I don't think there's a star like
clear number one edge, right, but there's a lot of
guys that that would be worthy of a first round
draft pick. Yeah. Well, let's talk about Mendoza.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Raiders are under form minutes away now from having to
get their pick in, so we're kind of moving fast here.
And you know, I was just talking to John Wilner
guys about this the other day, Dick and we had
him on the show, and we asked, John, when you
covered Mendoza and in Berkeley at Cal, would you ever
have thought he would have won the Heisman Trophy, won
the national championship and turned into the number one pick
in the draft. I mean, I honestly don't know how
(10:43):
many guys have done that. Heisman Trophy, National Title number
one pick Cam Newton. That is the trifecta, absolute trifecta, right,
and again there's been other specimens that you think, well,
they'd be, you know, capable of pulling that off. I'm
not sure if there's anything about Mendoza at Cal that
I thought he would ever become this guy. But you've
been pretty consistent here from the start. You would have
(11:04):
no problem taking this guy. Don't want if you're the round. Okay,
So the question then becomes what do you do with them?
Do you play him right away? Do you see him?
Do you fix the rest of your football team first?
I mean, this is a football team that last year
was terrible on offense, just fourteen points a game, last
in total offense, last and rushing even with gent hard
to imagine a Pete Carroll led team being that terrible
(11:26):
with the run, but they weren't even at seventy eight
yards a game. They got some new defensive starters, got
a brand new center and Tyler Linderbaum from the Ravens,
but you would think they're still a few years away.
They gave up a league high sixty four sacks last year,
did not have one pass catcher that's tight ends and
receivers go over seven hundred.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
So you want to throw mindos into that. Well, I
think the biggest concern the receivers are a problem. I mean,
he's got a tight end, he's got a running back.
The offensive line, they had forty one percent pressure rate
last year's twenty eighth they had the league worst over
eleven percent sack rate. They had the offensive line combos. Yeah,
(12:04):
keep an eye on the TV. By the way, guys
too that their number one combo was only on the field.
Here we go off.

Raiders pick at number one to kick off the twenty
twenty six NFL Draft.

With the worst pick in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft,
the Las Vegas Raider Fleck. Fernando Mendoza quarterback Indiana.

Fernando Mendoza, quarterback, Indiana, six five, two hundred and thirty
six pounds.

Oh he runs it penny times for.

Fernando Mendoza is on the verge of completing a perfect
calendar year as a college quarterback. Heisman Trophy winner, AP
Player of the Year, First Team AP All American, the
nation's leader in passing touchdowns, and most importantly, a national championship.
The elite compilation of abilities and accolades draws Joe Burrow
comparisons for Mendoza. Only one accomplishment remains to be the

number one overall pick in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft.

Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Here, you know, I'm sitting here, I'm just staring at
this guy. He's gotta watch party in Miami. He's with
his mom. His mom's got MS. I'm not sure how
much of him you've watched, but his dad when he celebrates,
always sits down with her because because she can't she
can't stand up.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
I mean, I'm just, you know what, I don't know
the kid at all. I'm really happy for it. Well,
he's really involved in the Cuban community. I mean, this
is a guy that checks every box. Guy graduated from
Callen with a business degree in three years. His IQ's
off the charts. His work ethic is Tom Brady Like.
(13:56):
He's a big, strapping dude that moves pretty damn well.
Anticipation next level anticipation ball placement. We used to called
BEP with the coaches at the University of Washington. I
mean every time he's hitting the spot the size of
a coffee mug. I think that there's a Joe Burrow.
You you mentioned Joe Burrow. That's that's what I had
(14:18):
had thought of weeks ago and watching his his production,
National champion, Heisman Trophy winner, I think that this is
absolutely the pick that they had to make. Now, he's
a little quirky with his personality. I think if things
go sideways, you know, I do think that there may
(14:38):
be a question about his capacity to lead. And then
and then a lot of his reads were RPO. Really
didn't have you know, second, third, fourth level reads because
the ball was coming out quick.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
But I think in every capacity, you take this kiss
real quick. He's the highest draft in Indiana. Who's your
nick sin? It's your favorite back of all time? Corbett
Davis in nineteen thirty eight was drafted by the Cleveland Rams.
That's how long it's been, man, We're talking ninety years.
How about that?

The fraternity he joins is cam Newton, Jameis Winston.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
And Joe Burrow. Wow.

And if you want to if you want to add
Vinnie Testa Verdi, there's an asterisk to it because Vinnie
was actually a backup on the national championship team. That
doesn't count, so that doesn't count. So it's Cam Newton,
Jamis Winston, and Joe Burrow Hugh. He was always out
of the shotgun. We know that. You know our guy
Kubiak does not like to be on the shotgun very much.
(15:33):
So how much of an adjustment is that going to
be for you?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
It's an adjustment for sure. And you know your feet
from shotgun. You can kind of take your time. As
a general rule, you say, if you've got a five
step drop from under center and then you go three
step from shotgun. If you got a seven step drop
from under center, then you go five steps from shotgun.
(15:56):
But there's an urgency you go seven step from under center.
You got to you got a whole ass and get
back there. And then when your back foot hits you,
you want to redirect your energy back to the line
of scrimmage. That's that's really good when you have the
first read to go to. But if you if you
have this pace where you want to redirect your energy
(16:19):
going forward from under center right, and then you have
to go to your second or third Now you have
to have that body control to keep your balancing, and
you want to have your weight situated a little bit
more favoring the right foot and ready to go. So
so and think there's some vision things. You're at the
line of scrimmage. You your field of vision. You know
(16:39):
Blitzer's coming off. You have to turn your head more
to see those. As opposed to being in shotgun. You
can kind of have your you can see more out
of peripheral vision because you're back further from the center.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Jets sorry about to make their selection here at number two,
first of two first rounders for them. They'll be up
again at sixteen with a pick they got from the
Colts and the Sauce Gardner deal. Remember who they're starting
quarterback is now in New York. It's Gino Smith who's
back with the Jets. They got him back in New
York after spending his first four years there when he
(17:11):
got drafted out of West Virginia. They got some decent
weapons there in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson picked up
at Night Mitchell who they got from the Colts and
the Sauce Gardner deal Isaiah Williams. But the problem here
really for them in a lot of ways is on defense.
They were second to last in scoring last year and
kind of a statistical anomaly. How hard is it to
not have an interception all year long? They just did it.
(17:34):
They were the only team in the NFL to not
have a pick. They had four takeaways, all were fumbles.
Let's go to Goodell with the Jets at number two.

With the second pick in the twenty twenty six NFL Draft.
The New York Jets like David Bailey, linebacker, Texas Set.

David Bailey, Texas Tech, six foot four, two hundred and
fifty pounds.

Let's range about twenty five miles southeastern pass and he
gets a rude welcome in love it.

David Bailey, the one they've all been talking about. Bailey
was extremely productive in college at both Stanford and Texas Tech,
with great explosiveness, moves, and leverage, while somewhat lacking in size.
He could improve his hand usage, but Bailey is an
elite talent.

David Bailey is the second straight pick by a guy
who began his college football career in the Bay Area.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
How about that?

I mean Cal's got a number one and now Stanford's
got a number two.

But they did it with somebody else.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
David Bailey just blew up man from his junior year
to his senior year seven sacks to fourteen and a
half out of Texas Tech, and he's now member of
a Jet football team that absolutely needs him big.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah. The Jets were lasting pressure eight thirty first in sacks,
which is twenty six total. He got Will McDonald, but
Jermaine Johnson was traded, and there are additions of Joseph
Asai that's never more than five sacks in his career.
As for Bailey, look, there's a lot of discussion about
who would be number two. The draft is going to

start at number two. What's the profile. Well, the profile
here in David Bailey is they took the dude that
has the most polished and production at producing sacks. You know,
Arve Arve ardel Arvest arvel Reece. Give me rvel Reeves
only six and a half sacks. This guy fourteen and
a half sacks. So he at six three and a
(19:36):
half two fifty one ran a four to fiveh forty.
That's the ninety six percentile. So he has the athleticism,
he's the only edge with the top tier testing and
top tier production and top tier efficiency. Bottom line that
he should be a high end starter, right. But but
(19:57):
you're talking about the guy that is the the best
at getting after the quarterback other than a quarterback. It's
the most highly coveted skill in the NFL. Dick is
a guy that has these type of traits.

David Bailey Edge Texas Tech goes to the Jets at

state champion sprinter is fast and showed off his four
to three six forty yard dashtime at the NFL Combine.

Love's body is built for the pros, lending many to
compare him to some of the top facts in today's NFL.

Jeremiah Love is now a Cardinal. They got a brand
new head coach too, and Mike LeFleur. Uh don't really
have a quarterback. It's Perset Gardner, Minshew and Keaton Slovas
for now. But they got some weapons here be down there.
Marvin Harrison, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne came over, Trey McBride
really good tight end.

So they got a quarterback in next year's draft. Man
look out.

Jeremiah Love is now a Cardinal running back. Yeah, and
there's some questions about their offensive line.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
But I think when you look at what Love brings, uh,
I think he's kind of once every three four five
year running back. What box doesn't he check? I mean,
he's got the vision, He's got the speed and acceleration.
He's got the lateral quickness to make you miss at
the whole. He he can catch the football. He he
(22:50):
has an unbelievable locker room presence in terms of of
the the commitment, the character. So I looking to say, hey,
we can try and build our offensive line, but you're
only going to have an opportunity to get a running
back like this, as I said, every handful of years,
and you might not be in a position to get him.
(23:12):
So if I'm the Cardinals, this is exactly the move
I make.

Maybe there's a reason Arizona didn't list the starting running
back on their depth. We talked to Jody Taylor, who said, wow,
we got James Connor, we got Trey Bentz.

You don't have Selgiers in free agency. You don't have this.

His point was that he went to the Cardinals website.
They had no running backs on the rosters.

No, they did. They had a third string, they didn't

is not your number two.

I mean, this guy's the only guy in college football
that was a draftable player that I thought was a superstar. Like,
I mean, the moment I saw this guy is like,
this guy just looks like a stud NFL running back
right now. And I just I think, if we five
years down the road, who's the best player out of
this draft?
Speaker 3 (23:57):
I'm putting my money on this guy. Well, I think
that in a lot of people's eyes, he's the cleanest
prospect because, as we said, there is no there's no
box that's left unchecked and right and for me, you know,
just kind of looking at that ability, that elusiveness in
(24:19):
the whole, the ability when he goes straight ahead and
he sees a tackler, his ability to go sideways and
then like like a lightning bowl, he just he changes
the angles ninety degrees at full speed, doesn't lose his
his acceleration. And so to me, I think he's a
runner in the category of a Bejon Robinson and got off.

late mother, Ashley, who was killed in a drive by

Ohio State, Tate won a national championship and then averaged
over seventeen yards per catch with nine touchdowns in twenty

Carnell Tite so absolutely a position a need for a team.
Drafting number four, Carneal Tate comes in, and I think
at six two and one hundred ninety two pounds, there's
a there's almost a Jerry Rice like quality to him
in terms of an extreme Polish and how he runs

his routes and uh and then his ability to to
go after and get the contested catch rate. He he
won eighty six percent of the contested catch rates.

Hugh, How do you rank him with Igbuca, Harrison, JSN,
Garrett Wilson, o'lave all these Ohio state vide receivers over
the last four drafts.

This is now the sixth Ohio state wide receiver on
the first draft and in the last four Jeremy Smith.
You know you heard this year, but there he's over
seventeen yards per catch, Jeremiah Smith. Last year I only
had fourteen. So so even though I'm sitting there telling
you and everybody acknowledges he's not you know, the one knock,
he doesn't have that that elite elusiveness. Excuse me, elusiveness. Yes,

he doesn't have. Certainly Jerry Rice run after the catch,
and he doesn't have that explosiveness was the word I'm
I'm looking for. He you know, that long speed, that acceleration.
So the athletic traits are are not elite, right, So
I would say he's kind of in the middle of
the pack on the Maybe a lava type would be
the most the comparison that I would use. You know

JSN coming out, you know, just a totally different body
style and had played almost exclusively in the slot. So
Garrett Wilson, you know, maybe there's a comp there, but
I would say a lave more than Hey, don't forget too,
I'd be remiss.

can he can afford to think about the future, right,
But can Joe Shane afford to think about the future,
And is he more compelled to make a little bit
of a pick that's for the now as opposed to

but the ceiling with him is going to be next level.

Yeah, only fourteen career starts. We're kind of alluding to

of a project. You know, I think his best years
may be two, three, four years down the line. But
you know, his rare, rare traits in defender. Just think
in your mind Micah Parsons, you know, an inside linebacker

where he's played an edge guy. At six four and
a half and sub four five, that's a ninety ninth
percentile in speed for an edge guy. Just the versatility.
I just I absolutely see him having a mark Micah
Parsons impact. Michael Parsons. You know he said, well you
only had seven sacks at Penn State. Well this guy
(35:27):
had said six and a half. I mean, there's just
so many, so many comparisons here, right, But but you know,
I think that this is a sign that they're they're
willing to say, okay, you know, in two three, years.
This guy could be among the best defensive players in
the league.

Monsur de Lange de bet the back LSU. Yeah, well

I mean, they lost McDuffie, they lost Jalen Watson obviously
as well, both those players to the Rams. They also
lost to safety and Brian Cooks, and they needed to
rework the secondary. They just did it with Mansewar Delaane
five to eleven, three quarters a buck eighty seven out
of LSU, started off at Virginia Tech and then transferred
to Baton Rouge for his last year. His brother is
(37:20):
also a safety at LSU after he played at Ohio State.
So the Chiefs just replaced Trent McDuffie with Mansear delay And.

That's an interesting point on this. They spent a lot
of resources to just kind of get back to where
they were with McDuffie. Now, obviously there's contracts involved. You've
got Mahomes and his contract, and so they would probably
tell you, well, we're getting a player at the level
of McDuffie, but or can be at the level, but
(37:47):
we're paying them a lot less. If you want a
guy that has the least projection, this is your guy.
He's the safest pick in the class. Yep, how about
this stat zero touchdowns allowed, zero penalties in I've never
heard of that. Wow. Forty careers starts, wins with elite anticipation.
He baits quarterbacks. I love his feet out just watching
(38:09):
how he mirrors on really all kinds of moves and routes,
but I particularly love how he mirrors in double moves.
He has a patient so he doesn't get beat by him.
Sub four four speed, eighty eight percentile, unanimous all America. Now,
he had ninety four percent of his snaps outside. Mcduffy
had been a slot guy when he came in. Then
(38:30):
they moved him to the outside, so they presumably are
are profiling him as an outside guy. Questions thirty inch arms,
that's the eighth percentile, ninety nine one hundred being the
best again eight percent on arm length. Obviously that thirty
two inch brominer wasn't important to the Chiefs, Dick and
because they get the highest floor corner in the draft,

not just not flashy, but just consistently right. Well, you
raise a.

Good point about getting back where you are just a
cheaper way of doing it. And just add Trent McDuffie
to a list of Tyreek Hill and Mitchell Schwartz and
Eric Fisher and Tyron Matthew and Frank Clark as guys
the Chiefs had to get rid of because of Patrick Mahomes' contract,
and hey, Patrick, Patrick Mahomes is worth this contract, but
there is always a downside when you pay fifty plus

This is a guy that was the second team AP
All American, First Team All Big Ten, fourteen starts, six
and a half tackles for lost in a stack, a sack.
He becomes the third player in the last four picks
to go out of Ohio State. Sunny Styles now a

member of dan Quinn's defense that took a serious step back.
They were thirteenth in total d and twenty four and
then dead last last year, including one hundred and forty
two on the ground. So no surprise DQ going defense here.

Well, I've never seen a duo of linebackers like what
Ohio State had with RVL Reese and Sunny Styles. Never
seen it in college football. And then when you throw
in Caleb Downs, who was a box safety. You know
often you watch that end zone copy on the tape,
you don't see the wide receivers in the corners that
second level of those three guys. Never seen anything like it.
(40:54):
Sunny Styles, he's prototype with the highest ceilings six foot
five ninety nine percent tele in height, two hund forty
four pounds. So he's a beast, uh physically, but four
four six forty ninety ninth percentile in his forty Now
think about that, you're in the ninety nine percent on
height and forty as a lineman. You still weigh tourn
(41:16):
forty four pounds. How about a forty three and a
half inch vertical That that speaks to his explosiveness, his
explosion and usually that correlates to how hard you can thump,
how violent you can be. And so look his tackle
he had a two point two percent misrate of forty
one career starts. That you got the durability, yeah, uh
(41:36):
you I got him the forty two starts by the
way overall, but yeah, yeah starts, Yeah yeah, how about
forty plus starts? You know, now he's he's only got
one career interception in nine and fifty snaps. You know,
some of his linebacking instincts because he's a former safety,
you know, you know, sometimes you look and say, okay,
is he going under the wash? Over the wash? There's
(41:58):
some things out there where he's still learning that position
despite all of his experience. But he's the highest ceiling
linebacker in the class. If the instincts catch up. He
will be a superstar linebacker in this league.

Well, we're a Caleb Downs pick in the next three
picks from Ohio State, being the second team since the
first team since Michigan State in nineteen sixty seven to
have four top ten picks. Go, is the order correct?
He order of guys that you would take from Ohio State? Tate, Reese, Styles, Downs?
Is that the order you'd take it? I think, Well,

I think that I think that it would be Reese
and then Styles then then Downs or Tate probably Tate
then Downs, right, But I hate to put any of
them fourth place, But I think that there was more

a Taate or a Jordan Tyson because they got Rashid
Shiheat in Seattle. I mean you're talking about the Chiefs

him contort his, body keep his his, body his bodies

he stays and keeps. Running and AS i, said he

master plan on what he's doing with the ball after
because he's he is now has a sense of where
the defender, is how he's going to cut the defender,
off and then now he's got the acceleration to go
get it and so and by the, way he's just
overcome with. Emotion now you can imagine all the injuries

for this one. Let's but okay, let's talk about where
we're at. Because the Hawks, we just got done telling
you four picks for now. If they do, guys, take
those four selections and make all of them, it would
be the fewest picks they've made in five years since

the famous twenty twenty one draft for infamous Do you
remember those three guys anybody stone for Sight twenty twenty one?

I'm gonna tell you there two in the interest of time,
DS Ridge and Trey Brown. They did not have a
first run draft pick that year because of Jamal Adams
because the trade with the Jets.

That's the few wis they've ever made, by the way,
in twenty twenty one. So we talked about this, Hugh earlier,
that there's all of a sudden, some decent sized needs
on this football team and not a lot of draft
capital to get it done with. I mean, this is
this is John Schneider losing his entire savings and having
just a couple of chips left and going back to

the casino to see if he can build that nest
egg back up.

This is going to be a challenge for him this week. Yeah,
you know, we talked about running back. I happens to
think that as presently constituted the most dire need for them.
I don't want to he's dire maybe as a word,
but the most significant need would be at running back, right.
And you know, people say, well, you can get on
players in the set in later in the draft, and

he pointed to Chris Carson. Chris Carson was a seventh rounder,
but there was also four other Chris Carson is one
of five seventh rounders that John Schneider's taking. The other
ones are kiro Small, Zach Brooks, Kenny Macintosh, Damian Martinez,
you know, third round or CJ. Prosis. There was injuries there,
Robert Turbin and DJ Dallas in the fourth round, fifth round,

Alex Collins who actually did okay once he left seatle
who who was it, Baltimore, Baltimore? Yeah was Baltimore, Yeah,
Spencer Ware and Travis Homer in the sixth round. So
any way you slice it, and then going back to
the second round, there's been three second rounders Christin, Michael
Kenneth Walker, Zach Charbonnatt, so kind of anywhere you slice it,

they're under fifty percent and so, and obviously the further
you go down the draft, the less likely you are
to have somebody who's impactful.

Just seems like John Schneider has positions that he's really
really good at drafting, and I think cornerback is one
of them. I think he's pretty good at the at
the edge, He's gotten decent edges, maybe not star edges,
but it seems to me like at their position right now,
at thirty two, you got a host of corners supposed

to go right around there. You've got a host of
edges they're supposed to go right around there, and you
got a host of guards that should.

So I'm I'm just leaning let's just say you have
to take thirty two. Nobody wants your crappy pick, right, So, no,
you had to take it thirty two. I'm saying, all right,
of those three positions which one of these guys have
fallen to us that we thought maybe have gone would
go twenty one to twenty two or twenty three, and
then grab that guy and then hopefully you can fill
those other two needs. Look, if you get a corner,

hopefully you can get an edge later, a guard later,
and a running back later with your four picks.

I never think that any team ever says, truly that
we take the best player on the board, because they
evaluate all the players. Even even you take the Chicago Bears,
they're evaluating every quarterback. They don't just say, well, we
got Caleb Williams. We're not gonna scout the quarterback. That's
not how the NFL operates. So here Chicago's at twenty five.
(08:56):
If let's say they had thought that ty Simpson was
really like a you know, top fifteen level player, and
ty Simpson were to fall to twenty five, the Bears
are not taking him. And and so I think it's
it's the best player available at a position of needs,
at a position of need. And I don't think that's
(09:17):
binary either. I think that there's there's a great a
gradient to that. I think you have really really uh uh,
you know, some teams have dire needs obviously, and then
you know there's very significant needs, and then there's modern needs,
and then there's mild needs and and and so I
think for Seattle, who knows who would fall there? How

do you rank?

How do you rank those needs that I just gave
it without running back? We know running backs number one
guard corner edge, I.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Would say corner guard edge. But I think that I
think that the deepest draft of the deepest deepest position
his edge. Yeah, I mean you've got you know, you've
got some guys here that that may fall and and

that I don't I don't think there's a star like
clear number one edge, right, but there's a lot of
guys that that would be worthy of a first round
draft pick. Yeah. Well, let's talk about Mendoza.

Raiders are under form minutes away now from having to
get their pick in, so we're kind of moving fast here.
And you know, I was just talking to John Wilner
guys about this the other day, Dick and we had
him on the show, and we asked, John, when you
covered Mendoza and in Berkeley at Cal, would you ever
have thought he would have won the Heisman Trophy, won
the national championship and turned into the number one pick
in the draft. I mean, I honestly don't know how

many guys have done that. Heisman Trophy, National Title number
one pick Cam Newton. That is the trifecta, absolute trifecta, right,
and again there's been other specimens that you think, well,
they'd be, you know, capable of pulling that off. I'm
not sure if there's anything about Mendoza at Cal that
I thought he would ever become this guy. But you've
been pretty consistent here from the start. You would have
(11:04):
no problem taking this guy. Don't want if you're the round. Okay,
So the question then becomes what do you do with them?
Do you play him right away? Do you see him?
Do you fix the rest of your football team first?
I mean, this is a football team that last year
was terrible on offense, just fourteen points a game, last
in total offense, last and rushing even with gent hard
to imagine a Pete Carroll led team being that terrible
(11:26):
with the run, but they weren't even at seventy eight
yards a game. They got some new defensive starters, got
a brand new center and Tyler Linderbaum from the Ravens,
but you would think they're still a few years away.
They gave up a league high sixty four sacks last year,
did not have one pass catcher that's tight ends and
receivers go over seven hundred.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
So you want to throw mindos into that. Well, I
think the biggest concern the receivers are a problem. I mean,
he's got a tight end, he's got a running back.
The offensive line, they had forty one percent pressure rate
last year's twenty eighth they had the league worst over
eleven percent sack rate. They had the offensive line combos. Yeah,

keep an eye on the TV. By the way, guys
too that their number one combo was only on the field.

comparisons for Mendoza. Only one accomplishment remains to be the

I mean, I'm just, you know what, I don't know
the kid at all. I'm really happy for it. Well,
he's really involved in the Cuban community. I mean, this
is a guy that checks every box. Guy graduated from
Callen with a business degree in three years. His IQ's
off the charts. His work ethic is Tom Brady Like.

He's a big, strapping dude that moves pretty damn well.
Anticipation next level anticipation ball placement. We used to called
BEP with the coaches at the University of Washington. I
mean every time he's hitting the spot the size of
a coffee mug. I think that there's a Joe Burrow.
You you mentioned Joe Burrow. That's that's what I had
(14:18):
had thought of weeks ago and watching his his production,
National champion, Heisman Trophy winner, I think that this is
absolutely the pick that they had to make. Now, he's
a little quirky with his personality. I think if things
go sideways, you know, I do think that there may
(14:38):
be a question about his capacity to lead. And then
and then a lot of his reads were RPO. Really
didn't have you know, second, third, fourth level reads because
the ball was coming out quick.

But I think in every capacity, you take this kiss
real quick. He's the highest draft in Indiana. Who's your
nick sin? It's your favorite back of all time? Corbett
Davis in nineteen thirty eight was drafted by the Cleveland Rams.
That's how long it's been, man, We're talking ninety years.

And if you want to if you want to add
Vinnie Testa Verdi, there's an asterisk to it because Vinnie
was actually a backup on the national championship team. That
doesn't count, so that doesn't count. So it's Cam Newton,
Jamis Winston, and Joe Burrow Hugh. He was always out
of the shotgun. We know that. You know our guy
Kubiak does not like to be on the shotgun very much.

So how much of an adjustment is that going to
be for you?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
It's an adjustment for sure. And you know your feet
from shotgun. You can kind of take your time. As
a general rule, you say, if you've got a five
step drop from under center and then you go three
step from shotgun. If you got a seven step drop
from under center, then you go five steps from shotgun.
(15:56):
But there's an urgency you go seven step from under center.
You got to you got a whole ass and get
back there. And then when your back foot hits you,
you want to redirect your energy back to the line
of scrimmage. That's that's really good when you have the
first read to go to. But if you if you
have this pace where you want to redirect your energy
(16:19):
going forward from under center right, and then you have
to go to your second or third Now you have
to have that body control to keep your balancing, and
you want to have your weight situated a little bit
more favoring the right foot and ready to go. So
so and think there's some vision things. You're at the
line of scrimmage. You your field of vision. You know
(16:39):
Blitzer's coming off. You have to turn your head more
to see those. As opposed to being in shotgun. You
can kind of have your you can see more out
of peripheral vision because you're back further from the center.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Jets sorry about to make their selection here at number two,
first of two first rounders for them. They'll be up
again at sixteen with a pick they got from the
Colts and the Sauce Gardner deal. Remember who they're starting
quarterback is now in New York. It's Gino Smith who's
back with the Jets. They got him back in New
York after spending his first four years there when he

got drafted out of West Virginia. They got some decent
weapons there in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson picked up
at Night Mitchell who they got from the Colts and
the Sauce Gardner deal Isaiah Williams. But the problem here
really for them in a lot of ways is on defense.
They were second to last in scoring last year and
kind of a statistical anomaly. How hard is it to
not have an interception all year long? They just did it.

They were the only team in the NFL to not
have a pick. They had four takeaways, all were fumbles.
Let's go to Goodell with the Jets at number two.

was extremely productive in college at both Stanford and Texas Tech,
with great explosiveness, moves, and leverage, while somewhat lacking in size.
He could improve his hand usage, but Bailey is an
elite talent.

David Bailey is the second straight pick by a guy
who began his college football career in the Bay Area.

I mean Cal's got a number one and now Stanford's

David Bailey just blew up man from his junior year
to his senior year seven sacks to fourteen and a
half out of Texas Tech, and he's now member of
a Jet football team that absolutely needs him big.

Yeah. The Jets were lasting pressure eight thirty first in sacks,
which is twenty six total. He got Will McDonald, but
Jermaine Johnson was traded, and there are additions of Joseph
Asai that's never more than five sacks in his career.
As for Bailey, look, there's a lot of discussion about
who would be number two. The draft is going to

start at number two. What's the profile. Well, the profile
here in David Bailey is they took the dude that
has the most polished and production at producing sacks. You know,
Arve Arve ardel Arvest arvel Reece. Give me rvel Reeves
only six and a half sacks. This guy fourteen and
a half sacks. So he at six three and a
(19:36):
half two fifty one ran a four to fiveh forty.
That's the ninety six percentile. So he has the athleticism,
he's the only edge with the top tier testing and
top tier production and top tier efficiency. Bottom line that
he should be a high end starter, right. But but
(19:57):
you're talking about the guy that is the the best
at getting after the quarterback other than a quarterback. It's
the most highly coveted skill in the NFL. Dick is
a guy that has these type of traits.

So they got a quarterback in next year's draft. Man

Jeremiah Love is now a Cardinal running back. Yeah, and
there's some questions about their offensive line.

But I think when you look at what Love brings, uh,
I think he's kind of once every three four five
year running back. What box doesn't he check? I mean,
he's got the vision, He's got the speed and acceleration.
He's got the lateral quickness to make you miss at
the whole. He he can catch the football. He he

has an unbelievable locker room presence in terms of of
the the commitment, the character. So I looking to say, hey,
we can try and build our offensive line, but you're
only going to have an opportunity to get a running
back like this, as I said, every handful of years,
and you might not be in a position to get him.

So if I'm the Cardinals, this is exactly the move
I make.

Maybe there's a reason Arizona didn't list the starting running
back on their depth. We talked to Jody Taylor, who said, wow,
we got James Connor, we got Trey Bentz.

this guy just looks like a stud NFL running back
right now. And I just I think, if we five
years down the road, who's the best player out of
this draft?

I'm putting my money on this guy. Well, I think
that in a lot of people's eyes, he's the cleanest
prospect because, as we said, there is no there's no
box that's left unchecked and right and for me, you know,
just kind of looking at that ability, that elusiveness in

the whole, the ability when he goes straight ahead and
he sees a tackler, his ability to go sideways and
then like like a lightning bowl, he just he changes
the angles ninety degrees at full speed, doesn't lose his
his acceleration. And so to me, I think he's a
runner in the category of a Bejon Robinson and got off.

Ohio State, Tate won a national championship and then averaged

present on Ca cam Ward. I don't know, like two
three quarters the way through the season. I couldn't believe
how void of talent they were at wide receiver. Calvin
Ridley would be barely a low level number two.

And and he's a guy that I mean before he
broke his leg, he only had three hundred three Like.

You know, the best wide receiver was it was elk

You just look and you go, whoa, he's got nothing. Now.
Carnell Tite so absolutely a position a need for a team.
Drafting number four, Carneal Tate comes in, and I think
at six two and one hundred ninety two pounds, there's
a there's almost a Jerry Rice like quality to him
in terms of an extreme Polish and how he runs

his routes and uh and then his ability to to
go after and get the contested catch rate. He he
won eighty six percent of the contested catch rates.

Hugh, How do you rank him with Igbuca, Harrison, JSN,
Garrett Wilson, o'lave all these Ohio state vide receivers over
the last four drafts.

This is now the sixth Ohio state wide receiver on
the first draft and in the last four Jeremy Smith.
You know you heard this year, but there he's over
seventeen yards per catch, Jeremiah Smith. Last year I only
had fourteen. So so even though I'm sitting there telling
you and everybody acknowledges he's not you know, the one knock,
he doesn't have that that elite elusiveness. Excuse me, elusiveness. Yes,

he doesn't have. Certainly Jerry Rice run after the catch,
and he doesn't have that explosiveness was the word I'm
I'm looking for. He you know, that long speed, that acceleration.
So the athletic traits are are not elite, right, So
I would say he's kind of in the middle of
the pack on the Maybe a lava type would be
the most the comparison that I would use. You know

JSN coming out, you know, just a totally different body
style and had played almost exclusively in the slot. So
Garrett Wilson, you know, maybe there's a comp there, but
I would say a lave more than Hey, don't forget too,
I'd be remiss.

who had one hundred and forty targets a year.

watching August tape right because everybody's thrown to him look
like preseason level wide receivers that are going to be cut.
So so at any event, yeah, they had to address
the targets for their former.

can he can afford to think about the future, right,
But can Joe Shane afford to think about the future,
And is he more compelled to make a little bit
of a pick that's for the now as opposed to

you know, polishing in terms of of his talent. But
but the ceiling with him is going to be next level.

up batch. Reese possesses elite playmaking ability with an excellent
blend of speed and explosiveness that can lead Reese to
developing into a top flight defender in the NFL.

back players from Ohio State. He's now a member of
the Giants John Harbago's defense in his first round.

Yeah, only fourteen career starts. We're kind of alluding to
this fact that maybe he'd be a little bit more
of a project. You know, I think his best years
may be two, three, four years down the line. But
you know, his rare, rare traits in defender. Just think
in your mind Micah Parsons, you know, an inside linebacker

where he's played an edge guy. At six four and
a half and sub four five, that's a ninety ninth
percentile in speed for an edge guy. Just the versatility.
I just I absolutely see him having a mark Micah
Parsons impact. Michael Parsons. You know he said, well you
only had seven sacks at Penn State. Well this guy
(35:27):
had said six and a half. I mean, there's just
so many, so many comparisons here, right, But but you know,
I think that this is a sign that they're they're
willing to say, okay, you know, in two three, years.
This guy could be among the best defensive players in
the league.

The Chiefs have made a trade with the Browns. They've
moved up from nine to six. In exchange, they give
up a third rounder and a fifth rounder to Cleveland.

They give up the number nine pick, a third rounder
and a fifth rounder to move up to number six.
Let's see what they do with that new pick that
used to belong to the Browns, but now belongs to
them at number six.

Twenty twenty sixth NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select.

Monsur de Lange de bet the back LSU. Yeah, well
it just made too much sense.

I mean, they lost McDuffie, they lost Jalen Watson obviously
as well, both those players to the Rams. They also
lost to safety and Brian Cooks, and they needed to
rework the secondary. They just did it with Mansewar Delaane
five to eleven, three quarters a buck eighty seven out
of LSU, started off at Virginia Tech and then transferred
to Baton Rouge for his last year. His brother is
(37:20):
also a safety at LSU after he played at Ohio State.
So the Chiefs just replaced Trent McDuffie with Mansear delay And.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
That's an interesting point on this. They spent a lot
of resources to just kind of get back to where
they were with McDuffie. Now, obviously there's contracts involved. You've
got Mahomes and his contract, and so they would probably
tell you, well, we're getting a player at the level
of McDuffie, but or can be at the level, but
(37:47):
we're paying them a lot less. If you want a
guy that has the least projection, this is your guy.
He's the safest pick in the class. Yep, how about
this stat zero touchdowns allowed, zero penalties in I've never
heard of that. Wow. Forty careers starts, wins with elite anticipation.
He baits quarterbacks. I love his feet out just watching
(38:09):
how he mirrors on really all kinds of moves and routes,
but I particularly love how he mirrors in double moves.
He has a patient so he doesn't get beat by him.
Sub four four speed, eighty eight percentile, unanimous all America. Now,
he had ninety four percent of his snaps outside. Mcduffy
had been a slot guy when he came in. Then
(38:30):
they moved him to the outside, so they presumably are
are profiling him as an outside guy. Questions thirty inch arms,
that's the eighth percentile, ninety nine one hundred being the
best again eight percent on arm length. Obviously that thirty
two inch brominer wasn't important to the Chiefs, Dick and
because they get the highest floor corner in the draft,

not just not flashy, but just consistently right. Well, you
raise a.

Good point about getting back where you are just a
cheaper way of doing it. And just add Trent McDuffie
to a list of Tyreek Hill and Mitchell Schwartz and
Eric Fisher and Tyron Matthew and Frank Clark as guys
the Chiefs had to get rid of because of Patrick Mahomes' contract,
and hey, Patrick, Patrick Mahomes is worth this contract, but
there is always a downside when you pay fifty plus

million dollars for a Yeah.

No, and they you know, they get rid of Tyreek
Keel and they try and draft speed Xavier Worthy. I mean,
you know if five and thirty two yards last year? Yeah,

This is a guy that was the second team AP
All American, First Team All Big Ten, fourteen starts, six
and a half tackles for lost in a stack, a sack.
He becomes the third player in the last four picks
to go out of Ohio State. Sunny Styles now a

member of dan Quinn's defense that took a serious step back.
They were thirteenth in total d and twenty four and
then dead last last year, including one hundred and forty
two on the ground. So no surprise DQ going defense here.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Well, I've never seen a duo of linebackers like what
Ohio State had with RVL Reese and Sunny Styles. Never
seen it in college football. And then when you throw
in Caleb Downs, who was a box safety. You know
often you watch that end zone copy on the tape,
you don't see the wide receivers in the corners that
second level of those three guys. Never seen anything like it.
(40:54):
Sunny Styles, he's prototype with the highest ceilings six foot
five ninety nine percent tele in height, two hund forty
four pounds. So he's a beast, uh physically, but four
four six forty ninety ninth percentile in his forty Now
think about that, you're in the ninety nine percent on
height and forty as a lineman. You still weigh tourn
(41:16):
forty four pounds. How about a forty three and a
half inch vertical That that speaks to his explosiveness, his
explosion and usually that correlates to how hard you can thump,
how violent you can be. And so look his tackle
he had a two point two percent misrate of forty
one career starts. That you got the durability, yeah, uh
(41:36):
you I got him the forty two starts by the
way overall, but yeah, yeah starts, Yeah yeah, how about
forty plus starts? You know, now he's he's only got
one career interception in nine and fifty snaps. You know,
some of his linebacking instincts because he's a former safety,
you know, you know, sometimes you look and say, okay,
is he going under the wash? Over the wash? There's
(41:58):
some things out there where he's still learning that position
despite all of his experience. But he's the highest ceiling
linebacker in the class. If the instincts catch up. He
will be a superstar linebacker in this league.
Speaker 4 (42:09):
Well, we're a Caleb Downs pick in the next three
picks from Ohio State, being the second team since the
first team since Michigan State in nineteen sixty seven to
have four top ten picks. Go, is the order correct?
He order of guys that you would take from Ohio State? Tate, Reese, Styles, Downs?
Is that the order you'd take it? I think, Well,

I think that I think that it would be Reese
and then Styles then then Downs or Tate probably Tate
then Downs, right, But I hate to put any of
them fourth place, But I think that there was more
of a need I mentioned Tennessee. I've done a lot

of studying the Titans, as I had mentioned, and they
were in desperate need of wide receiver help.

So Tate right, Uh. I don't think Tate's the number
one receiver on the board. I think he's the number
two receiver on the board. The kid from Rizino State, Yeah,
I think. Yeah, I think Jordan Tyson is the number one.
But the highest floor wide receiver is Taste right. Well,
I mean he is a he's a pro from day one.

Yeah, you're day one You're talking about a team now
that's on the clock in New Orleans that could use
a Taate or a Jordan Tyson because they got Rashid
Shiheat in Seattle. I mean you're talking about the Chiefs
giving up McDuffie and then replacing him with Mansurd Delayne.
I mean, New Orleans would be kind of almost a
coup to give up Rashid shi Heat for a fourth

and a fifth and then maybe land a guy like
a Tate. They can have their pick, right, they can
have Tyson, they can have Cardinal Tatum, and they've got
obviously Chrys o'lave there, but Devon vele is their number
two now. He had twenty five catches a year ago.
They signed Travis's terrible. I mean, there's nobody else besides Olave.
They signed Travis atn offensive lineman David Edwards. And free

agency he got a new starting linebacker and and Caden Ellis.
And now there's a concern about what's gonna happen with
Cam Jordan. I mean, there's rumors he may come back
for his sixteenth year. But I mean he's he's just
up there in age. He's his his his twilight is
upon him twenty eighth and scoring offense for Tyler Shuck,
who you know from his days at Oregon.

It looks like they're gonna roll with him for a while.
His roommates with my son, Yeah, for a time there
