Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kat one O three point seven, you're number one for
New Country to is Steve Ngina in the morning. We
know we're big believers in the work that the Food
Bank for the Heartland does and I think with times
now it's more important than ever.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
And there's a really neat event coming up on Friday,
December fifth. It's Stuff the Truck and here to talk
about it with this is Stephanie Sullivan from Food Bank
for the Heartland. Hi.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Stephanie, Hi, how are you guys doing great?
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Thanks for joining us? Can you tell us by Can
you start out by telling us what the Stuff the
Truck event is all about and why it's so important
this holiday season.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, our Stuff the Truck event is really important because
it allows our community to get involved in a really
easy and convenient way. So these Stuff the Truck events
are held at Baker's locations. This one coming up on Friday,
December fifth, will be held at the Eagle Run Baker's
location off of one hundred and thirty second in Mapril
from three to five on Friday, December fifth, And as
(00:56):
you enter the store, you'll receive flyers that shows you
right now some of the much needed items are at
food banks for the Heartland, and then as you do
your grocery shopping, pick up some of those non perishable items,
and as you leave, you can hand them to members
of our team. And it's truly that simple, and then
that food will be distributed across our ninety three counties
(01:16):
to more than five hundred network partners. So you're truly
making a difference on for neighbors in need right now,
who are making unthinkable decisions.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Now, we know one in five kids in Nebraska and
Western Iowa are facing food insecurity. What does that statistic
mean in real, everyday terms for families in our community.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Yeah, it means for one in every five children don't
know where their next meal is coming from. One in
five children are going to school every day and not
knowing if they're going to have dinner when they get home.
They are constantly struggling with that emotional distress, that fear,
(01:58):
that uncertainty. Maybe they know their parents are skipping meals
so they can eat and that no child should have
to face that. We're also seeing one in seven individuals,
the highest numbers that we've seen. Truly, these are historic
eyes and we know that the recent government shutdown has
only made things worse. So right now, more than ever,
(02:19):
we truly need the support of our community. And we've
seen how our community works together during a crisis, and
we need that support to continue now.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Beyond food donations and the stuff the Truck event, how
can our listeners help support the campaign financially or through volunteering?
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah, those are two great ways to support us right now.
Monetary donations are imperative for us because we can take
that dollar and stretch it that much further because of
our relationships with retailers. So if someone even can donate
a dollar, every little bit helps. I know there's a
lot of people right now who may be thinking they
(03:00):
can't make a financial donation, but every little bit helps.
Any donation, big or small, we appreciate, and so financial donations,
you can go to our website Foodbankartland dot org. You
can donate one time, or you can sign up to
be a monthly meal maker and make recurring gifts. And
another great way to get involved, as you mentioned, Gina,
is through volunteering. The volunteers are the backbone of our mission.
(03:23):
One out of every six pounds that comes into our warehouse,
it's touched by one of our volunteers. They are incredible
and we appreciate them so much. But right now, as
we get more donative food into our warehouse, our volunteers
are sorting through all of that donative food right so
it can go out to our network partners and they
can just get it and put it on their shelves
(03:44):
so they don't have to have volunteers sort through all
the food. Our volunteers sort through everything that comes through
our warehouse before it's distributed out. And so volunteers play
a huge role in our mission. So there's so many
different ways to get involved right now, and we all
have a role in fighting food insecurity in our community.
So if you want to learn more, please visit our
(04:05):
website Foodbankcartland dot org.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
She's Stephanie Sullivan with Food Bank for the Heartland. Finally,
what kind of items if people do show up? Are
you really interested in getting donut for stuff the truck
on December fifth?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, that's a great question. The highestnee that we're seeing
right now is protein and it is the first thing
that people cut from their budget when they're, you know,
struggling to make ends meat and so we know that
a lot of our neighbors in need are cutting protein
out of their diet. So when you're shopping things like
canned tuna, canned chicken, those are really important items right
(04:41):
now for families and need. Also things like peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta, sauce,
and boxed meals, microwavable mac and cheese, things that can
be in people's pantries and allow them to easily and
quickly put a meal together. And so these stuff the
trucks that these stuff the truck events are impairtive because
it allows their neighbors to stock their pantry and really
(05:04):
put together cluick meals for themselves and their families.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
I know our own host, Michaels, is going to be
at their Baker's Eagle Run three to five, one hundred
and thirty second in Maple on Friday, December fifth. I
know a lot of people are driving and can't be
writing all this down for more information, where can they
go with Stephanie.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
They can go to our website Foodbankheartland dot org and
we hope to see them out at step the Truck
And if they can't make it there there there are
so many ways to get involved the holiday season again.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Foodbankheartland dot org. Stephanie Sullivan with food Bank for the Heartland,
