Today, we're on our way to Onawa, Iowa. It's Laney
and I look forward to giving you the lowdown on
this sweet town between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. Onawa
is the birthplace of the beloved Exkimo pie. Legend has
it that the creator, Christian Kent Nelson, who was also
a high school teacher, came up with the idea in
nineteen twenty when a little boy couldn't decide whether to

buy ice cream or a chocolate bar. Thankfully, Nelson combined
the best of both worlds to make the chocolate covered
vanilla ice cream bar we all know and love.

Now. This is up for debate, but several sources claim
that Onawa has the whitest main street in the continental
United States. Historians say there are two reasons why the
street might be one hundred and fifty feet wide. Either
city planners wanted the street wide enough to help prevent
fires from jumping from one side to the other, or
they expected the Dennison Railroad rush straight west through town, or.

Speaking of railroads, Onawa's Kawanis Museum Complex is a neat
facility with a railroad depot, caboos, and railroad memorabilia. Onawa
also draws visitors who want to explore and camp at
Lewis and Clark State Park. There's even a full size
reproduction of Lewis and Clark's Keelboat. We Salute Ottawa, Iowa,
another great small town in Cat Country population two thousand,
