Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hold on for this one. Seven morning habits that will
affect your entire day. This is West Michigan's morning news.
Doctor Jim Apple gave former Family Physician of the Year
in the whole state of Michigan. Thanks for doing this
again today.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
So I'm assuming is it just unwritten that starting your
day with wood radio will have a positive effect or
that will.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Have an absolutely positive effect, especially if you listen on
Fridays at this time.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
That's right, So the eighth morning would just I'm adding
a number. But what else could we should we or
maybe not be doing well?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
One of the things that's obviously bad for you is
to hit this neosze button.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
No.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Well, for one, there's a negative impact on your health,
both physically and mentally. Physically, if you think about it,
you go back into a state of sleep, but back
into a state of semi consciousness, and then all of
a sudden you're jolted awake again. If you do that
several times, it's just circadian rhythm and ruin your body emotionally,

(01:04):
if you think about it, you set yourself up to
be late, to be rushed, to have to do all
sorts in the news button, So get up with that
first alarm.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
I tell you I stopped doing that and I do
feel better, and I took the advice. I don't know
who it was, but somebody said count down from five
and then So when you're supposed to do something, just five, four,
three and then go get up. I'm sorry, what else?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Doctor? Checking your phone? That can be very negative for you.
It can awaken the inner critic in you. Because of
social media, you're going to get a lot of criticism.
There's negativity that abounds there. You know, when was the
last time you woke up to a message from your
boss that said, hey, you did a great job yesterday.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
That's the best one yet.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
It's just it's just a negative thing to do. So
don't check your phone. Just wait till you get to work,
especially if you're going to go on social media. Wow.
A similar bad thing is beginning to plan your day
right when you get up, because again, you have all
these expectations, all the to do list only grows have
all of this stuff, and psychologically it's really impending doom

(02:20):
on you if you start checking your phone and start
planning your day. So just don't plan your day. If
you have to do it, do it tonight before set
it up, do your to do list, all those things.
Don't do that in the morning because that's just going
to ruin the rest of your day. Brilliant.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Okay, what else is out there?

Speaker 2 (02:37):
A good thing is we've talked about this before, having
a glass of water when you first wake up, because
if you think about it, you know, we've all seen
our breath. We all lose water through the night, and
that's six to eight hours where you're breathing at night
and not replenishing the water you lose through your lungs.
So getting up drinking a good glass of water is

(02:59):
a good way to start your day. It's actually helpful,
will stop that dehydration, make you feel better, get that
body chemistry going. So have a good glass of water
when you first wake up in the morning.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
All right, that's a positive.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Coffee is good for you. Hey, you know we've talked
we've talked about that before, the great source of antioxidants.
It actually increases your mood, it increases your energy. So
having that cup of coffee or two not a bad
thing in the morning, probably six Like sometimes when I

(03:32):
was an intern, I would do probably not the best thing,
but a couple of cups of coffee will increase your mood,
increase your energy. That's a good thing.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
For you, you know, almost it's like part of ritual
with me, and I appreciate the stimulant, but I just
kind of like the idea of it. I've taught myself
to drink it black because I think that's how it's
the It took me a little while to enjoy that.
Now I do and I look forward to it, and
it's like a little reward because.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
It boots those bread hormones. Brust is the dopamine in
your brain and is the sherotonin in your brain and
definitely makes you feel better. So that's a good thing
to do. But don't skip breakfast. You know, we want
you to get a good breakfast, a lot of protein,
you know, a yogurt something like that is really a
good way to start. It will get your brain in

(04:20):
gear for the rest of you day. If you don't
do it, you know, you may not feel good for
the rest of the day, all right.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Don't skip West Michigan's Morning News number eight breakfast Doctor
Jim Applegate always great stuff. Thanks for your time today.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
My pleasure
