Speaker 1 (00:00):
And this is West Michigan's morning News Steve Kelly, Brent Mkita,
and our football insider Ty Hallick, brought to you by
First Companies. They locate, create, and manage physical spaces where
businesses thrive is at First Companies dot Com.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Well, Ty Hallick, it's the biggest story out there. It's
being covered nationally, even outside of the sports realm, and
I've just got to start with your reaction. I mean,
we knew that it was probably going to be a
coaching change at Michigan State, and that was just a
week ago with Pat Fitzgerald and now all of this happening.
When you heard this, what were your thoughts with Sharon

(00:34):
Moore out as the Michigan football coach but now even
more involved than that.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, I just think it's you know, obviously it's a
bad look and it's kind of unfolded. I'll be honest
with you. Like many, I'm sure your initial reaction is
what in the world are you thinking and doing? But
then you kind of get sad about it. I mean
I kind of, you know, I want Sharon to, you know,

(01:02):
do what he would tell his players, you know, own
this thing, pivot, get in a right direction, get yourself
mentally right. You're going to have to own all these circumstances.
But he just compounded one problem on top of another.
I get. You know, look, the pressure alone of a
head football coach at the Big ten level, particularly at Michigan,

(01:25):
doesn't justify any actions, but it does have people, I'm
sure in a mindset that's very heightened and emotional. And
then to have all these other things transpire and then
to it just feels like he just continued to add
to it and now let all that kind of work
through itself. But to be honest with you, I have

(01:47):
as a Michigan State Spartan prayed for sure on more
his family and this situation for everybody involved to hopefully
get whatever it needs to be settled, but then move
get moving into a positive direction. This is very difficult.
You know, people were all flawed to some degree and

(02:08):
have had issues in our lives that you know, bring
us down. You know, you got to hit that bottom,
but you got to take care of yourself moving forward.
So I just hopefully they can find the right coach
in short order and Michigan can get moving back on
to you know, their their mantra of being leaders in best.

(02:29):
But you know, there's a lot of it that that
I obviously don't like. But I I just don't think
it's good for football. I don't think it's good for
any program. This is a huge distraction. But there's a
lot of lives involved here that I don't know. You
look at social media and it's so easy to throw
out and fast darts and throw rocks and all the things.

(02:52):
And again, some of that's warranted, and that's that realm
of life, the social media part. But I don't know.
I just get to a point where it's how many
more things can you take? On a daily basis? We're
always tearing each other apart. He's got to own these mistakes.
It cost him his job, one of the best jobs
in the country, no argument about that. But my hope

(03:13):
and prayer is that he and his family, however, they
get going into a positive direction as the thing settles,
just move on and Michigan's got to move on, and
they got to move on fast because you've got recruits involved,
you have people. You know, again, when you talk about people,
there's a lot of people involved in here. Who's going
to say who's going to go? But you got money
involved in that with Nil. So there's a lot of

(03:35):
things to sort through here, but Michigan needs to do
it in short order in terms of finding a new
leader for their program.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
I appreciate your answer that because having gone through the
recruiting process, and I know you've shared publicly and shared
with me what George Perlis meant to you at a
time in your life and going through with college athletics
and then eventually in the NFL and mentors you've had,
and then to now have your kids be recruited. You
understand that side of it as a parent as well.
And with that said, I look higher than Sharon more.

(04:05):
I think the other part of the story that's nowhere
near done and it's going to have to be solved
in the next few days, is what about ward manual
in the athletic department and as athletic director. How culpable
were you? What did you know? What didn't you know?
And that's a serious situation.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Yeah, I agree with that, but you know those people too.
It's funny all those people get it put in weird
dynamics and decision making processes and trying to figure out
what's right what's wrong. Let's say, I have no idea
what they knew, when and how, But are you magically
going to do that five games into the season if

(04:42):
you know, I don't know, I somebody has to make
those calls and those decisions, and I certainly there's going
to be scrutiny. And again, if there were things that
were done there that warrant some kind of discipline or exit,
that's you're gonna have to live with. But you know,
that's way higher up the chain at Michigan. They all

(05:03):
got to look themselves in the eye based on what
they know and what they found out. No different than
Michigan State. Does you know. I'm not one of those
people that forgets you know, our history too. But the
reality of it is, none of these things are easy.
None of these things are are are fun. But at
some point elevated towards the top of the chain, you
got to make tough, hard decisions, move this thing along

(05:25):
and try to get back to healthy, positive direction for
everybody involved.
