Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to West Michigan's Morning News. That's Laurence Smith, Tony
Brooks in for Bret Bakita, Adam Morocho is here, and
ladies and gentlemen, I'm Steve Kelly. It is Thursday, July seventeenth,
twenty twenty five and Schmidty Top five Time.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Where do we start?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
At number five? This is a feel good story. James
Gunn's new Superman movie has gotten rave reviews and made
a really nice chunk of money for the studio, but
it's also helped get dogs adopted. If you haven't seen
it yet, Crypto is a new character. It's Superman's loyal
foster dog. He is spotlight throughout the movie. And Google

(00:38):
has just released findings saying searches for adopt a dog
near me have surged more than five hundred percent, while
rescue dog adoption near me is up almost two percent
two hundred percent and specifically adopt a Schnauzer, which is
what Crypto is three hundred percent. I thought that was

(00:59):
so cool.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
I think that's great too.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Adopt don't shop.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Good to know? At number four?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Does the I haven't seen the movie yet, does the
Crypto have super dog powers?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I don't know anybody.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
I haven't seen it yet.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Adam's looking enough.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Spoiler alert.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Who there's somebody on the staff that saw it and
posted it on social media. I can't remember who it was.
Sandy wants to see it.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
He has the same powers as Superman.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Oh he don't, yes, and terrifying at well if he's
ticked off totally?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
What about lifting his leg? Should it be like a
sand blaster.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Here's something to really put in someone's mind. At five
point thirty seven, am at.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Number four unless the Richardson's ground squirrel weighs less than
a pound and is about a foot long and is
native to the northern plains. But this little creature is
a ferocious tunneler, and apparently it's causing problems in my
not North Dakota. They think somehow because of overbreeding, there's
ten thousand of the things and they're screwing up foundations
and destroying the city. This, by the way, comes at

(02:05):
a time when the city manager of Grand Rapids will
be in because we won one more award. That is
so exciting that the manager will be on the program.
At seven thirty six.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
I have very good friends that live in mine, not
I will.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Have to ask them to yet yes to Grand Rapids. No,
And there it is Tony.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
At number three this morning.

Speaker 4 (02:26):
It seems most good sports teams have a mascot that
really stands out. The Detroit Tigers has Pause even here
in West Michigan.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
And we have griff with the Grand Rapids.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Griffins and the white Caps have a whole team of mascots. However,
over time, there have been some mascots that were easily forgettable,
or at least ones that some fans were hoping to forget.
For instance, the Pittsburgh Steelers they had Steely mcbeam. He
was supposed to be a typical blue collar worker from
the steel mills in Pennsylvania. Kind of looked like Sparty

(02:55):
in the face, kind of odd. The Tampa Bay Rays
featured a dog like creature that named Raymond Ray. Kansas
City Chiefs for some reason had a wolf they named
Casey Wolf. But the most perplexing one for me came
from the Orlando Magic Stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
The Magic Dragon.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Yeah. Oh wait, Orlando was where Florida? Yeah, only in Florida.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
And there it is that the number.

Speaker 5 (03:18):
Two at number two. Gosh, I hope Chris isn't listening
this early in the morning. Darth Vader's lightsaber is up
for auction this fall celebrate the forty fifth anniversary of
the Empire strikes Back. The screen used lightsaber, and this
is the first like of the big hero lightsabers to
ever hit the market. It's expected to fetch between one

(03:38):
and three million dollars. The last time something like this
went up for sale, it was just a model of
an X Wing that went for two point three million.
Sweet mother, it has to go for more than that.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
I did this on my other show yesterday and Chris
texted and he was like, hey, listen, it can either
be fishing tackle or this.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
You decide. It's a lot of fishing tackles. The down
payment on that, can you?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
I don't think they allow you to finance it.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
I'll say that, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
It seems like a good investment because it's gonna well, where.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Would we put it.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
We already have our two wedding lightsabers hanging on the wall,
running out of space, Steve.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Just so you know, it's a prop.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Okay, So if you're listening to the program and think
that you'll be able to use it in some sort
of defensive or offensive way, because you know, dark Side
finally at number one on the list firefighters and marine
mammal specialists.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
I should just keep the Star Wars theme going for this.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Came together to rescue a dolphin named Lucky who was
found stranded in a shallow title lagoon in South Carolina.
You think at this point we should stop naming things Lucky, Yes,
because it never works out for them, don't that? And
Lefty the bluffed In Township Fire District set in a
news relief that Cruiz responded alongside low Country Marine Mammal

(04:57):
Network and concern bluffed and locals when the seven foot
ten inch dolphin researchers identified by her distinctive markings found
stranded in this lagoon in Hampton Lake Township. They all
jumped in. It was just two to three feet deep,
by the way, and not sure what brought Lucky in
in the first one, Lucky, but Lucky's cool.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
I weighed four to five hundred pounds.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, it took a whole bunch of them to drag
her out, and she was so happy. She swam in
little circles and jumped in the air and she's off.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Lucky's pretty confident here it is.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
It was a good thing if you posted.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
If she shows up again, chat for those propellers. Okay,
that's in.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
That's right. It must be Thursday.
