Speaker 1 (00:00):
Creativity is an addiction, unplugged because we will always say
yes to creativity, totally uncut because we all make mistakes.
So let's turn it into a tool. This is arrow unplugged.
I love words. Words will come to me when I
least expect it, and damn if I don't pick up
the dictionary and start looking up to figure out what
is this word all about and how can I use

(00:20):
it today? The word that got me today scruples a
feeling of doubt or hesitation with regard to morality and
propriety of a course of action. Yeah, I was used
in a sentence this morning, the very second I woke
up and I was sitting on the edge of the
bed and I said, I need to get my scruples together.
That's when my wife goes, what what I've never heard

(00:41):
of scruples? What are you talking about? Which took me
by surprise. I mean, we all have feelings of doubt
and hesitation. They've just put an aim on it, scruples.
I believe it was my father that would always sternly
tell each and every one of us to pull our
scruples together. Dad didn't like his children to be a
bump on a law, mainly because his training in the

(01:02):
US military meant constantly moving forward. He knew things wouldn't
get done if we just sat around with our scruples,
just letting things just be filled with doubt and hesitation.
He wanted action, and he got it from us because
he would say things like that, don't get your scruples
in the way. Hesitation, doubt. We live with it daily

(01:25):
rather than fixing the mental decision. It's easier for each
and every one of us to dive into that smartphone
or to jump into a binge watch. Daily writing helps
me get my scruples together. Hey, it's ero. This is
the daily Mess, a chronological walk through an everyday world.
I am a daily writer. I've been doing this since
July of nineteen ninety four, and so when words come

(01:46):
at me, is it out of habit or is it
that I'm truly blessed with the opportunity to receive new
things to talk about? This is the daily Mess. I
think the sun has elected to sleep in today. Like bananas.
We always depend on these things to be here, and
when they aren't, we will let it poison our inner ambitions. Basically,

(02:08):
let me give you a better picture of what's going
on here? Eight forty eight am looks like a sunset
at eight forty eight pm. My mind is going am
I supposed to be waking up or going to sleep?
There are ways to get around this struggle. Some of
them include waking up at the same time every day,
check resetting the heat in the house to be warmer

(02:29):
when you get up. I'm gonna argue with the experts
on that one. The reason why is because if I
wake up to a nice, warm, cozy house, you think
I'm going to get out of bed. Hell no, I'm
gonna be going. Oh give me that pillow. It serves
as an invitation to relax, not get up and move.

(02:52):
These are the months of fall, and that means one thing,
shorter days and later sunrises. And I'm not the only
one infected by this life of light. A good cup
of hot coffee doesn't work as fast as you would
like it. I could have two or three of these
little monkeys over here, and it's like, oh my god,
I've still got my scruples going on here. I can't
get my junk together what's going on? So you've got

(03:13):
to push your mind, your body, your soul. I use
daily writing as that instrument, as that tool to say,
wake up, let's move forward. If the bananas and the
sun aren't going to be there today, move on, let's
go do pineapples and red food coloring. I don't know
why I said that. I just tried to get myself

(03:33):
in a moment where I didn't have doubt or hesitation.
How do you move through your moments of being in
scruples when you have that doubt that hesitation? Do you
sit down or do you say my Google calendar is
so full today and tomorrow and what I don't get

(03:53):
done today, that means tomorrow is going to be a mess.
So put your scruples away and let's get more. I
do it through writing. I do it by coming into
this studio and realizing I'm not in here as a hobbyist.
I'm in here to make something effective, to grow it forward,
and being in a moment of scruples screws it all up.

(04:16):
I'm Eryl, and that's the daily mess.

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
