Those things people say. They sound so cool and very up to date when in reality most of what we say is old old old. It's rehashing what our grandparents once said. Such as...bat shit crazy!

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Think of it as your flat screen. You know how
you can go from Hulu to Netflix to Disney to
Paramount Plus? Okay, well, that's exactly what Arrow.net is. A-R-R-O-E.net.
It is the power of choice. In fact, one of
the best podcasts that we've got is That Voice. I've
spent the past 10 seasons with those on NBC's The Voice. Well,

(00:20):
now that it's back for its next season, let's talk
about that history as to how we got up to
where we are right now. That Voice, only on Arrow.net.
A-R-R-O-E dot net. Enjoy your exploration. Those old sayings, phrases, idioms,
you know, those things your family and friends used to
come up with and they came from out of nowhere.

(00:41):
And sometimes, well, they kind of made sense. Well, they
had to start somewhere, right? Who, what, where, why, when
and how. Some of those old sayings are not only ancient,
but they still carry a powerful punch today. I live
by one of those old sayings. Winning is a choice.
It's not just a set of words. It is a lifestyle.

(01:02):
Winning is a choice. The goal of these episodes is
to help preserve not only a language, but lessons in life.
My name is Arrow. Warning, this episode features adult language.
I'd go as far as saying that maybe your grandparents
and those before them, yeah, in their words, I'm acting

(01:23):
a little bat shit crazy. Where did that term even
come from? It's as old as our great-great-great-grandparents, right? No,
not really. It's actually pretty modern. It's taking two old-fashioned
words and making them a stronger phrase. Bat-shit is exactly
what it says. Crazy is the other, which describes kind

(01:47):
of an irrational or unpredictable behavior. Now, let's team them up. Bat-shit-crazy.
It started showing up in the latter part of the
1950s up to the 1970s. Lindquist, with all their verbal history,
say it comes from apeshit, horseshit, and just going nuts.
It's meant to be vivid, shocking, a little off the wall. Today,

(02:09):
batshit crazy is used loosely, especially when talking about something
like your traffic. Oh my God, it's batshit crazy out here.
It's gone from describing people to laying out what the
experience is all about. But, but, but, but, but. It
is on the list to be wiped off our word
use map. Yep. Because it goes against the rules of

(02:32):
mental health. People have made it a point to get
others to stop using it because of the emotional impact
and the shock value. And it needs to fade from
our everyday conversation. Hmm. That's a little batshit crazy if
you ask me. It's something our parents would say. I'm Arrow.
