Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Inspiration Moment's podcast, where we share tips
and insights to help you make choices that lead to
a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Today, we're discussing the
journey of unearthing your purpose. Many of us go through
life searching for that one thing that makes us feel
whole or gives us a sense of purpose. But finding
your purpose isn't just about identifying what you love to do.
(00:22):
It's about digging deeper to uncover the reasons behind your passions, motivations,
and even your fears. The journey is one of introspection,
and it's not always easy. Let me start by sharing
a personal story with you. After a successful professional career
and a significant life transition, I was invited to teach
a seventh grade English language arts class. Now, I'll be honest,
(00:45):
middle school wasn't exactly my sweet spot, but something unexpected
happened during that time. A love, passion, and desire for teaching, educating,
and coaching were unleashed within me. This experience opened the
door to what has become a fulfilling journey, leading me
to teach in higher education and pursue writing, speaking, and
coaching on business innovation. Leadership and achieving your highest potential.
(01:11):
This is what happens when you begin to uncover your purpose.
Purpose is like a treasure buried within you, just waiting
to be discovered. According to Michael Stager, a leading researcher
on meaning in life, discovering your purpose involves more than
just finding what you love. It requires us to engage
in activities that align with our values and bring meaning
(01:32):
to our lives. This process of seeking and finding meaning
is crucial to living a fulfilled life. As Stagger emphasizes
in his work on positive psychology, the process of unearthing
your purpose requires tools like self awareness, courage, and, perhaps
most importantly, patients. Ian McGregor and his colleagues, who study
(01:52):
the motives behind self change, suggests that transformation often begins
with a crisis or a period of uncertainty. This discomfort
pushes us to redefine who we are and what we
want from life. It's in these moments of challenge that
we are often closest to discovering our true purpose, as
I discovered during my transition to teaching, When you align
(02:13):
your actions with your deeper purpose, the results can be transformative.
Research by Barling Weber and Kellaway on transformational leadership demonstrates
that when leaders align their actions with their core values,
they not only achieve better outcomes, but also inspire those
around them to find their own sense of purpose. This
shows that purpose isn't just a personal journey. It can
(02:35):
also have a profound impact on those we lead, an influence. Now,
how do you get started on your own journey of
unearthing your purpose. Let's begin by exploring three actionable steps
that can help you along this path. One. Reflect on
your past experiences. Take time to look back at your life,
your successes, your failures, and everything in between. Ask yourself
(02:58):
what moments brought you the most, what challenges taught you
the greatest lessons. These reflections can provide valuable insights into
your purpose. Brine Brown, in her powerful tet talk on vulnerability,
highlights how embracing our vulnerabilities can lead to a deeper
understanding of ourselves and what truly matters to us. By
reflecting on our past with honesty and openness, we can
(03:21):
uncover the clues to our purpose. Two. Identify your core values.
Your core values are the principles that you hold most dear.
They're the non negotiables that guide your decisions and actions.
Spend some time listing out your top three to five values.
Do you value integrity, compassion, creativity, or something else. Understand
(03:43):
there are no right or wrong answers here, you're simply
exploring your core values. Living in alignment with these values
is a powerful step toward discovering your purpose and living
a life that feels true to who you are. Three.
Start small and take action. Finding your purpose doesn't happen overnight,
and it doesn't require a grand, life changing event. Start
(04:06):
with small, purposeful actions that align with your values. If
you've identified a passion for helping others, volunteer for a
cause you care about. If creativity is a core value,
carve out time each week to pursue a creative project.
Purpose is often found in the doing, not just the thinking.
As research on self change shows, it's the small, consistent
(04:27):
actions that lead to lasting transformation and a deeper understanding
of our purpose. As you implement these tips, remember that
your journey is unique. There's no one size fits all
approach to finding your purpose. What matters most is that
you stay committed to the process, embrace the challenges, and
celebrate the discoveries along the way. Through our inspiration Moments,
