it's all about bringing people together, but for many they

(00:23):
can also feel lonely this time of year. Well, that's
why we're excited to tell you guys about neighbors Giving.
It's taking center stage a new way to connect with
your community and joining us now to share how simple
acts like baking for a neighbor can spread holidays year.
We're excited to welcome back HGTV's hometown stars, Ben and
Aaron Aper to our broadcast today. Ben Aeron, thank you

(00:44):
again for stopping by. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
I know that Cyrus knows all about baking goods for
people or someone in his family.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Does there you go, Hey, I just baked an apple
pie myself this week, so I'm very proud of that, Ben. So,
so this is an exciting topic and this is something
that I think our audience are really appreciate. So Erin
are going to start with you. How can sharing homemade
food help people feel more connected this time of year.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
So Bob's Readmill actually did a study on this and
they learned that when we bake things and we take
it to people and we share me all together, it
helps fighte loneliness and people feel more connected to their neighborhood.
And so we just want to emphasize that we worked
with Bob's to come up with this name for it.
I mean neighbors giving, which I think is something that's

(01:32):
really inherent in Southern DNA. This is what we do
as Mississippians. We know how to knock on someone's door
and give them food. Our mama's and grandmama's teach es
this from the time we can walk. So it's just
talking about how do we prioritize human connection when we
see what everyone's been up to on social media and

(01:53):
you just assume you know we're connected. We're friends on
the internet. So I thought they got.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
A dog last week. I think that we're better at
it in South sorry in small towns because we you know,
people say like, oh, small towns are full of nosy
neighbors and all that, and which is true. We are nosy,
but we're also looking out for each other. We're also
checking in, and so that's part of it.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Well, I think Aaron brings up a really good point, Ben,
because we live in a time and I'm guilty of
that as well. I actually live in Rinkin County and Brandon.
But you know, we see probably our neighbors and people
more online than we do in person, even those around us.
So Ben tell us about neighbors giving how it's encouraging
people to connect right in their own neighborhoods.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
It's basically just putting a label to what we have
forgotten or what we've lost here in America and today's
digital age. It's prioritizing human connection, you know, going out
checking on your neighbors, meaning people. If you go to
more Gatherness dot com. That's another name that we coined
with Bob's, there's you know recipes. There's basically an outline

(02:59):
of hey, if you don't know how to do this,
if you don't know how to do neighbors giving here's
some ideas to help you get started.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Love that where and you both live in Laurel, Mississippi,
another beautiful city. What are some of your favorite ways
to bring neighbors together, especially this time of year.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Our neighborhood is super connected around the holidays with an
email chain that's all about ordering your tree for your
front yard and what color bow you're supposed to put
on the top, and it's it can also be used
for something like this. It would be great to send
out an email to that whole chain to say.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Hey, guys, what if we have a pot luck in
the park.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Everybody bring your favorite thing, super casual, come and go.
We can visit and bring your recipe. I just think
it's great anytime we can have the youngest in the
neighborhood spending time with the oldest in the neighborhood because
they have so much to offer each other.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah, and do we have one more question for you, Ben?
We're going to remind our audience so that that's what
you mentioned. Do you hope this is something that will
get the whole family involved, because a lot of times
even the youngest feel left out of things that may
be happening. Do you hope that neighbors given kind of
help all the family members to see how they have
a part to play.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, it's Aaron and I are using it as a
parenting hack actually, and a lot of those hacks are
at moregatherness dot com. That's the website that Bob's has
put out that's got recipes and activities that you can do.
But this is something that we are using with our
two daughters when we bake things. If they want cookies,

(04:33):
we're baking extra cookies that we can take to our
friends and neighbors and people from our church. So yeah,
you can use it.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, we know that the most real and lasting joy
in life comes from focusing on not yourself, to focus
on others, and so we're trying to teach that to.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Our kids well, and your being an example for all
of us been in here, and I really appreciate one
to say, I'm so glad to have a chance to
speak the two of you again and tell you how
proud we are of you all in the way that
you're showing the goodness of Mississippi as well as I
think the realness of Mississippi as well. And I really
appreciate you guys stopping by the day and spend some
time with us.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Thank you for saying that virus. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (05:14):

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
