Welcome everyone to The Doctor Bob Martin Show. I'm your
co host, doctor Adam Brockman, and today we're going to
shine a spotlight on one of the most vital and
inspiring movements and modern wellness, and that's women in health
across the globe. Women are not only leading the conversation
about health, but reshaping the entire industry. From doctors and
(01:21):
researchers to founders and advocates. Women bring a holistic perspective
that blends science, compassion and intuition. It's a combination that
truly changes the way we heal in the way we live. Now,
here's an interesting fact. Women make up nearly seventy percent
of the global healthcare workforce. And when women have a
(01:41):
seat at the table, health and healthcare doesn't just become
more inclusive, it becomes smarter, safer, and more effective for everyone.
And let's also not forget women are the primary decision
makers when it comes to family health. They're the ones
that research the safest products, they schedule appointments, they read
(02:02):
the labels, and they ask the tough questions about what
goes into our bodies in our homes. They're the ones
on the front lines. They protect, they provide, and they
promote better health choices. So today I asked a special
guest to join us in discussing the impact women are
having all across health in healthcare, and if also, folks,
(02:24):
if you want to join in this conversation which we
encourage call us at eight hundred six zero six eight
eight two two again that's eight hundred six or six
eight eight two two, or visit our website at doctor
bob dot com. That's finding out the word doctor doctrbob
dot com and folks. Today's guest embodies that pioneering spirit perfectly.
(02:45):
She's built her career around empowering women to take control
of their health, their businesses, in their brands, proving that
wellness doesn't have to be complicated, it just has to
be proactive. So let's get ready to get inspired, because
we're going to dive into the intersection of health, innovation
in female leadership with a guest who's turned her passion
(03:06):
for clean living into a movement. So I'm thrilled to
be welcoming this inspiring guest in the world of women's business,
beauty and clean living. It's Cassandra McClure. She's a strategic
business advisor and an investor who's helped over two hundred
women launch, grow, and scale their brands across the US,
and as a passionate advocate for female entrepreneurship, Cassandra brings growth,
(03:31):
strategy and heart to every venture She Touches. She's also
the creative director in the voice behind Living magazine, where
she continues to shine a light on ethical, sustainable, and
forward thinking brands in the wellness space. Her roots they
were as a celebrity makeup artist and award winning beauty founder,
(03:52):
and Cassandra's creative vision it has shaped not just the products,
but also industries. She's worked with a leadership and she's
been featured in Forbes, Glamour, NBC, Fox News, and Beauty Matter.
And when she's not helping entrepreneurs succeed, you'll find her
serving as a judge for top wellness and beauty competitions,
(04:14):
including the Glamour Wellness Awards and Clean Beauty Awards. So Cassandra,
She's a speaker, a devoted wife and mom in the
driving force for cleaner and more conscious living. So folks,
please welcome Cassandra McClure to The Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Hi Cassandra, how are you today? Hi?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Thanks so much for having me. I'm great, just coming
off a really wonderful Thanksgiving with my in laws in town.
So man agreed.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yeah, well, hopefully the in laws are good help and
in good food. That you guys had at your house.
This would past a week.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Mm hmmm, and help with the little one.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
And that always that has always appreciated. So Cassandra, I
want to go ahead and start talking about this. This
community is riving community that you've built. It's more than
twenty thousand members, so that's a great start. So let's
go ahead and just talk about that. How did you
turn this network into such an engaged supportive space for
(05:12):
women in business and health?
Speaker 4 (05:15):
Yeah, I think being really vulnerable and sharing my story
and my health struggle when I was diagnosed with an
autoimmune disease. Several different things happened at Stanford with my vision.
I was diagnosed with psoriasis, severe allergies. I was going
in and getting shots in my arm, and I was told,
(05:39):
you know that I needed to wear glasses. And I
was in my mid twenties, and so none of that
really made sense to me because no one in my
family had any of those sorts of issues. And so
I had really bad plaque on my head. It would
itch and hurt when I would get out of the shower.
(06:01):
I would get inflammation like red, itchy bumps on my
back and I actually thought I was allergic to my
own hair. I was, so I had no idea it
was the products I was using, and so I went in.
I took the medicine, I took the steroids. I did
everything that the you know, doctors prescribed me. But I
(06:25):
still was super curious, like why it was happening, because
they didn't ask about my lifestyle and I used all
those products. I was working as a makeup artist. I
was in the salon working on people's hair and makeup
for weddings and on TVV sets, you know, working with
so many people at a time, and I noticed that
(06:45):
the flare ups happened on the weekends when I was working.
So I started, you know, kind of digging, and once
I did a cleanse and I got rid of the
products that someone had tipped me off that maybe it
was some of the fragrances that were in some of
my products. So when I removed those, it was a
(07:09):
light bulb moment. In seventy two hours, I could breathe better,
I could hear better, I could see better. My skin
inflammation went down. My best friend asked if I lost
weight and if I was on a diet because the
red puffy noss around my face went away, and it
was like one of the I was like, whoa, this
(07:31):
is life because I had lived with it for so
many years. My nose was always running, my eyes were
always watering, my throat was always itchy and scratchy. It
was just like I was under a cloud. And when
I essentially healed naturally from just not exposing myself to
(07:52):
all of those chemicals, I started the world's first clean
beauty podcast and told that story, and overnight I had
this community of other women coming to me, some great
men as well that said me too, like this happened
to me, Why is this still happening? And I came
(08:15):
to find out that in the United States there were
no healthcare regulations passed since nineteen thirty eight, and that
we were living in a society in America where cosmetics
are not regulated. So if you look at cigarettes, for instance,
there's a big warning label on there. There's even pictures
(08:36):
that show what can happen if you smoke on alcohol.
You can't access it until you're twenty one, and it
also says, you know, don't do this while you're pregnant. Meanwhile,
women are putting baby powder on their newborn children, and
they're growing up with ovarian cancer because the talc in
(08:58):
the powder has gone into their inside and caused cancer.
And I have friends who have died of cancer. Now
in this space, I have friends who have survived, you know, cancer.
I have now lots of doctors in my network who
are seeing these things happen with breast cancer because the
(09:21):
deodorants that we're wearing are causing that. The stories, they
just go on and on. And so I started the
show out of research. Like I was. I wanted the
front row seat, like you Adam, you know, we get
to talk to people and learn something new. And I
was really hungry for that information because where I consumed
(09:44):
my information was podcasting. I that's where you know, I'm
not really a big read a book. I really wanted
to kind of go and hear people talk. And when
I went to search the term clean beauty, nothing can
came up in twenty eighteen, so I was the first
to talk about it, and naturally I grew this community.
(10:10):
I had already had a name because of what I
had done in the model world, in the acting world,
in Hollywood, in Dubai, all over the world working as
a makeup artist. So I had that following and their
big question was, well, what are you going to use now?
Because at the time I was working on a campaign
(10:30):
several one of them was with Maybeleine and we all
know that brand because it's in every single you know store,
you can walk into every Walgreens.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, sure, I'm going to have you hold that thought
because this is this is important to understand this regulations
on that and so so when we come back, when
we come back from break, we're talking with Cassandra McClure.
You're gonna want to stick around for her insights on
the health and beauty industry. You're listening to the Doctor
Bob Martin Show.

Bob and myself we're standing by to help you unlock
your best self. That's eight hundred six zero six eight
eight two to two. All right, let's get back into
our conversation today with Cassandra McClure. She is a health
and beauty expert in the in the founder of Clean
Living magazine in podcasts into Cassandra. We're talking about this
(12:55):
community of over twenty thousand members in that you were
involved with the celebrity makeup industry and how how your
own autoimmune system was affected by by health and beauty
products and you're like, hey, there's got to be a
better way. And we were talking about your experience with
that before the break and I just want to kind
(13:18):
of have you pick up where you were left with
Mabelene and how it's it's everywhere, it's readily available, and
what what can we do? What do we need to
be on the lookout for as far as with with
our skin and beauty care products? What what what are
some options that if you're looking to say, hey, you
know I had skin irritations, I had Exima, whatever it
(13:41):
might be. What what can we do? What should we
be on the lookout for if we're looking for for
safe and effective products?
Speaker 4 (13:48):
Now, yeah, I definitely the process the process of elimination
for me was it was getting rid of everything. I
went crunchy, if you will, because I removed everything that
had the word fragrance in it, and I actually bought
products based on that. So I would walk into Victoria's Secret,
I would walk into the candle store. I would buy
(14:10):
everything based on that. So it didn't it wasn't just
cosmetics for me. It was the candles I was burning,
the air fresheners in my wall, my laundry detergent, all
of the big name brands that you can think of
that were in that are in uh these big box stores.
It was all of those things. And my perfume. I
(14:31):
had a huge collection of perfumes, just not knowing that
I was dousing myself in these things. And then when
I would take a bath, and then my shampoo and conditioner.
So as soon as I stopped using those products with
fragrance in them, my itchiness on my head went away.
You know, all all of my symptoms cleared quite quickly.
(14:57):
I hear this is pretty common. So if you are
to kind of go cold turkey with all of those
things and one of those is triggering your allergies, you could,
you know, breathe better or have less irritation and your
skin will become less sensitive. But what I often hear
(15:20):
is that with like acne and things like that, it
takes your skin like several weeks to regenerate. I think
we get something like twenty eight days and it will
kind of turn over and your your skin will be
kind of new shed and then you can start to
(15:41):
topically apply. And you know, I learned this because I'd
never really even done that before that. If you use
you know, your inner wrist or your forearm to apply
new like lotions, creams, whatever that looks like, even foundation
on your arm, first wait, see there's any sort of
allergic reaction. If your skin itches anything like that, it
(16:04):
could be a really big red flag, you know, to Okay,
this is irritating me. There's something in this. Maybe it's
the silicones. Maybe maybe it's the parabins. Maybe you know,
maybe there's sl there's some ingredient that is an irritant.
So in the US still there is not a law
(16:27):
around the word fragrance on a product, and a company
legally can put hundreds of ingredients inside that one word fragrance,
so they can, essentially and they do hide things inside
that word. And initially it was meant to protect the
(16:50):
companies and their proprietary information, but now it's used to
blanket the truth. And if we were to see some
of the words some of the ingredients that we're on
the back of the packaging, and it also makes that
list longer. And our eyes are now trained because clean beauty,
(17:12):
clean living has been around for a while and a
lot of consumers are waking up and becoming smarter, and
we're starting to read labels because we're being told about this,
and it's hard to ignore because why would Sephora come
out with a clean at Sephora sticker? Why would Target
(17:37):
have a clean section? What does that mean for everything else?
And so we're now picking things up. We're trying to
be educated, we're trying to be smarter about what we're eating,
what we're putting on and in our bodies. And so
the companies are, you know, a lot of them are
overseas mass producing in room, big factories, these cosmetics, and
(18:03):
they're sticking more ingredients inside that one word fragrance and
keeping or adding fragrance to their list and making the
list of the other things shorter. You know, you'll see
essential oils, alo and a couple other things, and then
you'll see that word fragrance And for me, that's a
big no no because you don't really know what's inside
(18:26):
and you if you look on their website, if you ask,
if you inquire, you will never get those answers. And
so to me, that's really scary to know that you
can be lied to. And for someone with allergies that
could be allergic to, like I have one of the
women in my collective who's allergic to rows. That's a
(18:49):
natural you know, a lot of people are allergic to
all kinds of things that are natural and good for you.
And if that was to be added in like a rose,
and they didn't, you know, disclose that, it now becomes
a real, you know, a bigger health concern and and
and a safety issue. So I just avoid that altogether
(19:11):
because I know that California has done really really well
at moving the needle. When I joined the movement, I
joined a company called Beauty Counter now it's called Counter
and a Crunchy is another one that I also joined
forces with. But Beauty Counter was interesting because we lobbied,
(19:33):
we actually had laws passed that we're in the favor
of the people in regards to a cosmetic you know act.
So the Fragrance Act should be enacted in California here
pretty soon, where the fragrance will have to be disclosed.
(19:54):
And what's great about that for the rest of America
is California won't have products made over seas just for California.
And think about where you get a lot of your
products from online, right it's gone, it's you know, the
products are shipped to a warehouse and then they're distributed
(20:15):
all over the country. And so how can we just
have specific products just for California. It doesn't make sense
because there's all kinds of distributors that sell products online
like Amazon, right to people all over the country, and
then people drive and cross borders and go on airplanes.
(20:36):
So how could we make products. So that's the great
thing about California because once we have something past here,
it's really hard for companies to you know, keep up
with that regulation when so so that's a really good thing.
So the fragrance that one should go in effect and
(20:59):
slow trickle down. And I'm I'm really excited to see
what that does for companies and how that makes our
world a better place. In terms of these ingredients, companies
are now cleaning up their act, right, and we have
EWG verified, We can look for these seals, we can
(21:21):
look for these logos, and so it's really it's really
great to see companies wanting to be better and then
consumers also demanding it, so the companies have to be better.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
I agree with you, Cassandra. That's a that's a big thing.
The trickle down is that that, hey, there's going to
be more more safe products nationwide readily available, whether that's
their Amazon or other Targetsphora, all those All right, we're
talking with Cassandra McClure. She is the founder of Clean
Living magazine, and we'll be right back. You're listening to
(21:54):
the Doctor Bob Martin Show. Are you waiting on a line?
Speaker 4 (22:02):

founder of Clean Living Magazine. In Cassandra, I want to
ask you if if listeners want to find out more
(22:54):
about Clean Living Magazine and uh and also your your
your own radio show and podcasts, where can they find
that at.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
Yeah, I have my own website, so clean Livingmagazine dot com.
My my personal and my business is Cassandramaclear dot com.
They're kind of all under one roof there. Our collective
is also there. I have a shop where you can
shop clean products. I am a consultant, so I have
(23:22):
services and the show is also there, so you can
go anywhere and listen to the Cassandra mclar show on
any you know podcast platform here as well.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Yeah, and Cassandra, we when we met, obviously we talked
about a number of different things, but one of the
things that that stood out to me is you've mentored
and you've guided hundreds of women founders and their brands.
So looking looking back, I always I always like to think,
you know you can you can learn something from from
every person, right, So, so looking back, what have these
(23:56):
other women founders taught to you? Maybe it's about resilient
creativity or leadership, maybe some things that have also shaped
you and helped you grow professionally and personally.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Yeah, for me, I mean it does go back to
sharing my story and then aligning with other women who've
had similar struggles. I mean, that's kind of what creates
and cultivates community is similar mindset, you know, the similar
(24:30):
struggles that you go through. And I've always been big
at connecting people, That's one of my strengths, and then
empowering them through education events, experiential events that get people
excited to learn and they don't even realize that they're
(24:51):
learning something right, they're trying a new product, they're you know,
hearing from an inspiring founder. And so I built communities
so organ likely like it literally started with my show
and then from there, I was asked by many of
my listeners when I would have something in person, and
naturally came our first clean Beauty founder's retreat that was
(25:16):
in twenty twenty, right before COVID. It was sold out
and featured in Forbes. And I knew then that that
was passed down to me from my mother because she
was in the events world and hosted events for a
living and growing up, I was always going to set
up you know, ten's tables chairs for a wedding, and
(25:39):
you know, I often got to be be there. But
I think and I came from a really big family too,
so there was a birthday, I felt like every weekend,
and so we were always celebrating something and getting together.
There's nothing like that energy. And so naturally, through life
I had cultivated these whether it was through photo shoots,
(26:00):
styled shoots, my work as an artist. I would always
gather a bunch of models and do these elaborate shoots
all over the world and then working on sets, and
so naturally the retreats and the events came so easily
that I, you know, and and for me, when you're
(26:22):
empowering each other and you're connecting and there's that community,
it's infectious. And that's why we have this free community
and it's grown the way that it has with you know,
twenty thousand plus members because it's a great place to
be and there's no agenda. It's really all about giving
(26:46):
and educating and inspiring each other because we need each
other to grow, especially when we're up against all these
huge companies that have been around for decades.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
And you know, I know you you love these live events,
and I think that's one of the neat things about
what you got going on. You know, you got the
magazine and then you do these live events. So why
are these live events and these real world connections so
important in this digital age and where most networking happens
(27:23):
basically on screens now, So these live events, I think
that that's that's one that thing that always stock out
to me about about what you're doing these So again
the question about how these live events changed the direction
from us just looking at screens and meeting people online.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
Yeah, you know, I live on Instagram and LinkedIn, and
I have these big communities online and I love I
love that, But there is a huge element of isolation,
and we can get stuck in the in the screens
and not can to depression. It's happened to me and again,
(28:05):
creating these community spaces and events and latching on and
supporting others that have events. As a media partner with
my magazine and my show have been instrumental in my
growth and being there to support and give product and
share about clean living, share cleaner options, give people free
(28:28):
samples for them to try and take home, and so
they can really see firsthand that these companies are doing better.
They'refore better, They're made in the US, they're women owned,
they really have great morals and ethics. That is so
important to me. So I say yes to as many
events as I possibly can, because you can't you can't
(28:51):
get that online, and you can't get that community. You
can't get a hug online. You can't learn about you
know what your what your favorite scent is just by
reading online. You have to go and you have to
customize your own scent. You know. We have to go
come to our scent bar, you have to come to
(29:13):
our retreat. To make those business relationships go ten times
faster than if you were to send thirty emails, you know,
back and forth, back and forth, because there is a
barrier to entry online, like you can only get so far.
You can have the FaceTime calls, you can do all
of that. It's just so much time, and when you're
(29:35):
at an event, you can feel someone's energy so much easier.
You can like pick up on you know, what they're
feeling and thinking, and you know, just judging by all
you know how they're acting, and it just and you
can make curated introductions for them and just have easier
conversations when you're sitting down and like breaking bread. So
(29:57):
we host a lot of luncheons and dinners. It just
it helps the growth of so many ideas. So one
of the things that's happened with these community meetings a
lot is women come with me very vulnerable, with an
idea and they want to start a company. They want
(30:19):
to start a podcast, they want to start a beauty brand,
they want to write a book, they want to do
all of these really ambitious things. And they saw or
see that I have done it, and so they open
up to me and I help them. You know, that's
what I love to do. And so they come to
(30:39):
me maybe thinking oh, I'm going to shoot them down
or I'm going to and of course I give them
the reality of how hard it's going to be, but
I offer the resources.
Speaker 3 (30:50):

that your wellness journey continues even when we're off air. First,
our physician team is always available at eight hundred six
(34:53):
or six eight eight two to two for your health questions.
That's eight hundred six or six eight eight two to two. Second,
don't forget. You can add access our entire podcast library
anytime at doctor bob dot com. There you can re
listen to your favorite episodes, catch up on shows you've missed,
or discovered new health insights. That's all available twenty four
to seven at doctorbob dot com. Now let's get back
(35:13):
in today's conversation with Cassandra.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
You know I have I've always said I have my
free strategy call that anybody can can pick up and
book a call with me on my website and I'll
always have that. And I've been around friends that have
said when I've been on one of those calls and
they were like, who is that? You know? When I'm
like out to lunch and I'm like, I'll take my
(35:37):
fifteen minute call on my break and they're like, why
do you do that on your like lunch break, And
I'm like, because I just I love to talk to
new people and hear what they have to say, and
that's keeps my pulse on what's going on and why not?
Like I love being able. Even if I can pour
into someone and sometimes I never hear from them again,
that's fine. You know, not everyone is the right fit
(35:59):
for me. I'm not the right fit for everyone else.
But it gives me joy to talk to people and
help them and hear what they're doing. And if I
can make just one positive change on someone's life, that
gives me so much joy, you know, And sometimes I
won't hear about it for five years. You know, they'll
come back to me like, oh, do you remember when
(36:19):
we talked and you introduced me to this person. Half
the time I don't even remember, but I'm like, yeah, okay,
and they're like that changed everything. I wrote the book,
I did the thing, I launched the show, and it's
just amazing. And then but I don't even do it
for that. That's just a bonus for me. So I
just get super passionate about helping other women because I
(36:43):
just didn't have that. I Navigating life is already hard enough.
So if somebody can lend a helping hand and give
you something that you didn't have, whether it's just a
little piece of information, a contact, you know, or even
(37:03):
just a congratulating them. Like one woman came up to
me and she told me, I just I just got
into a divorce. And I was like, congratulations, and she
was like, well, you're the first person that I've told
that too, But like, I don't think other people are
going to say that, but I'm so proud of myself.
And you know, it's like I just knew what to
(37:24):
say to her because I could tell that she was
happy and proud about it. But I know most people
are going to say, oh, you know, poor you or whatever,
but she was genuinely like excited, like happy about her
decision of getting out of this toxic marriage. And so
I can pick up on that energy. And I think
it would have been different if she would have told
me that over email, right, And she's this just ten
(37:46):
years ago and she's still one of my best friends.
So I think that those relationships like that, those are
your people. Like when when you know people open up
and they're vulnerable and they come and they share their
like dreams with you and you can help to curate
that dream. These events are where a lot of those
dreams are curated. I've helped launch so many companies into
(38:09):
the void of let's try this and see what happens.
So a lot of people bet on you know, the
strategy that we create within our agency to grow, launch
and scaleer company or even raise funds. We've helped a
lot of companies raise capital to get their product into
(38:31):
the market. So that's what's exciting for me.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Yeah, Cassandra, we get just a couple minutes before break,
but I want you to talk about a couple of
the events that you have coming up over the next
next few weeks.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
Yeah. So December sixth, in San Francisco, we have what's
called SF Fashion Fantasia. It's an annual festival that I
help as a media partner. I moderate a clean beauty panel.
We have a doctor, a roled renowned on cologist named
doctor Shamley Single who is the medical director at El
(39:08):
Camino Women's Hospital, along with several other women who will
be talking about health, wellness, cancer prevention, and longevity. Really
excited for that one. And then December thirteenth, we have
our magazine launch up in NAPA with very prestigious winery
Kamus Rutherford, and we're really excited to be partnering with
(39:31):
a lot of local brands up in NAPA as well
as our brands all across the US. So we have
Fundai Souls, who has sustainable footwear. We have Reprise Activewear,
which is an activewear company, many many more and I'm
happy to chat more about that, but you can go
to our website and find out all the details if
you want to attend.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
Okay, and what was the website again.
Speaker 4 (39:54):
