The tone free number to ask Doctor Martin a health
(00:45):
question or to make a health related comment is eight
hundred six oh six eighty eight twenty two. Eight hundred
six oh six eighty eight twenty two. That's eight hundred
six zero six eighty eight twenty two. It's the Doctor
Bob Martin and Show.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Welcome to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. I'm doctor Adam Brockman,
flying solo this hour, and I've got a lineup of
health headlines today that reads like modern Medicine. Drank and
expresso and hit the gas pedal. We're talking weight loss pills,
blue Light inside the Body, male birth control in a
possible pain treatment breakthrough. And as always, we do this
(01:25):
through the lens of speaking the health truth. That means
we don't just parrot the headline and clap politely. We
ask the bigger question, what does this actually mean for
your body, your choices, in your longevity, because the gap
between hype and help can be wider than people realize.
(01:45):
And folks, I want your participation in the show. If
you have a health related question or a topic you'd
want us to explore, you just have to dial in
and have your voice heard. Our toll free hotline is
eight hundred six zero six eight A two two, or
if you're shy, you can drop us a line at
doctor Bob dot com. Again that's eight hundred six zero
(02:09):
six eight eight two two, or at doctor Bob dot
com spelling out the word doctor d O C T
O R Bob dot com. All right, let's go ahead
and start this hour with our health headlines of the week.
(02:32):
Let's start with headline number one, and that is the
fast Track pill. The FDA has reportedly approved Eli Lilly's
FANDEO in a record fifty days. Fifty days that is
lightning speed in regulatory time. This is being billed as
a major shift in the obesity conversation because unlike the
(02:54):
injectable GLP one drugs that have been become the household names,
this one comes in pill form, oral instead of injectable,
tablet instead of needle. And yes, this matters a lot
of people who've been reluctant to use the injectable drugs
and are going to see this and think, well, finally
(03:14):
something I can take without feeling like I need a
pregame peptie talk in an alcohol swab. So from a
convenient standpoint, it's a big deal. But here's the health truth.
Obesely is not a simple medication shortage. It rarely is
just about a weak appetite signal in a magic fix
(03:34):
in a capsule form, and excess body weight or body
fat is often the smoke and not the fire. Underneath it,
you may find insulin resistance or chronic stress, or hormone
disruption or ultraprocessed food addiction, and that creates a loss
of muscle mass. So while an oral drug like FUNDEO
(03:57):
may absolutely help some people, let's not pretend a pill
is the full blueprint on metabolic health. That's like repainting
the dashboard while the engine light is still on. So
my perspective on OBEs is this, use every safe tool wisely,
but don't sideline the fundamentals. You need to build muscle.
(04:17):
You need to eat more protein and fiber and cut
back on liquid calories and processed junk. Maybe it's just
as simple as walking after meals. It helps to stabilize
your blood, sugar, and sleep. And if medication enters the conversation, fine,
but use it as a support strategy and not a
replacement strategy. All right, let's move on to the next headline,
(04:40):
and that is internal illumination. Stanford researchers, in a study
that was published in Nature Materials, are using ultrasound to
generate blue light inside the body. That sounds like something
that's dreamed up in a sci fi writer's room, but
it's real and it's fascinating. So instead of shining light
from the outside the body and hoping it reaches the
(05:03):
target tissue, researchers are now using ultrasound to create light
internally in a much more focused way. Now why is
this important Because light based therapies can be useful, but
getting light deep inside tissue has always been a challenge,
so this new approach it may offer a non invasive
pathway to targeted therapies for hard to reach places like
(05:27):
the brain in the gut. That is a great possibility.
Imagine influencing specific cells or circuits without surgery, without massive
collateral damage, and without turning the body into a construction zone. No,
it's not the same thing as blue light from your
phone that's frying your sleep cycle at eleven thirty at
(05:50):
night while you scroll yourself into a cortisol parade. This
is precision medicine, potentially targeted neuromodulation, and potential gut therapy,
and potential future tools that work with morphinesse and less force.
So this gets my attention because medicine too often acts
(06:12):
like a battering ram. Sometimes the body needs a whisper
and not a bulldozer. So we are still very early
on in this research, so let's not start asking for
it at our local urgent care tomorrow morning. It's one
of the most intriguing stories in medicine right now because
it hints at a future where treatment becomes more accurate
(06:34):
and less invasive, in more biologically intelligent. Okay, let's move
on to the next headline, and it is now the
guy's turn. We have Cornell researchers. They're getting major attention
for work involving the JQ one compound as a possible reversible,
(06:54):
non hormonal male birth control option. And let's be honest,
you know, for a long time the contraception conversation has
leaned heavily on women carrying the burden, often with hormone
based options that come with very real side effects. So
JQ one is different because it doesn't work by bulldozing hormones.
(07:18):
It targets proteins involved in sperm production. And that is
why this is such a notable development, the idea that
fertility could be reduced without permanent shutdown and without hormonal chaos.
So we got reversible and non hormonal. Those are two
phrases that make it a lot of people's attention. Now,
(07:42):
before we throw the confetti, let's keep it grounded. We
need long term human data. We need to know how
reliable it is, how reversible it truly is, and what
the side effects might show up over time. But philosophically,
I like where this points us. The smartest medicine often
solves a problem without blowing up the endocrine system in
(08:05):
the process. So the body body tends to appreciate precision
over all that chaos and drama. And finally, today we
have the pain revolution. Researchers at nih in ni DA
have identified d F and Z and that's a newly
(08:25):
recognized opiate metabolite that appears to provide a pain relief
without the euphoric high or the dangerous respiratory depression that
is seen in traditional opiates. If that finding continues to
hold up, it's enormous. That respiratory depression is one of
the darkest features of opiate drugs. It's that trapdoor under
(08:48):
the stage. It's what turns pain treatment into a lethal gamble.
So the possibility of keeping pain relief while removing the
high in that breathing suppress it's a jaw dropping development.
But we also need to add a filter here. Safer
pain medicine would be welcome and desperately welcome if that.
(09:10):
But pain it's not always a chemistry problem alone. It
can be mechanical, it can be inflammatory, it can be neurological, nutritional, emotional, postural,
and stress driven. You know, I work in rehab and
muscule skeletal care. And I can tell you this, A
lot of pain is the body's alarm system that's begging
for interpretation and not just that suppression. So yes, let's
(09:35):
follow dfn Z closely. It could represent a major breakthrough.
But let's also remember that smarter pain care includes rehab
and movement in manual therapy, maybe anti inflammatory, nutrition, sleep,
stress regulation in that root cause investigation. So a better
(09:56):
molecule is great, a better model is even better. So
there you have it, a fast tracked oral obesity drug,
internal blue light generated by ultrasound, a potential non hormonal
male contraceptive in a promising pain reliever without the high
(10:18):
or breathing danger. So, folks, you know new science can
be exciting, but your body still responds to those timeless
principles to move more, eat smarter, sleep deeper, reduce inflammation,
protect your metabolism, and support your immune system before it's
under siege. And never let anybody convince you into thinking
(10:40):
that root cause health no longer matters. All right, folks,
it's time for a quick message. I'm doctor Adam Brockman
and this is the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
Stay with us, Doctor Bob margin with an important message
from doctor Earle Mendel, PhD, pharmacist and author.

Welcome back everyone. You're listening to the Doctor Bob Bardin Show,
the largest syndicated health show in the nation. I'm your host,
doctor Adam Brockman, and we just went rapid fire through
our health headlines, and if you have questions or you
want us to dive deeper into one of those headlines,
here's your invitation to reach out. You can either dial
(12:47):
our toll free hotline at eight hundred six zero six
eight eight two two. Again, that's eight hundred six zero
six eight A two two, or you can drop us
an email at our website, which is at Doctorbob dot
com and that's spelling out the word doctor docto r
bob dot com. Again, that's eight hundred six zero six
(13:09):
eight eight two two or at doctor Bob dot com. Okay, folks,
right now, it's Stress Awareness Month. But here's the thing.
I'm actually a little tired of awareness. Most of you
are painfully aware that you're stressed. You feel it in
your neck, you feel it in your gut, You definitely
(13:31):
feel it when you look at your maybe it's your
bank account or the evening news. And this year the
theme is be the Change. So I want us to
move past awareness in straight into stress mastery. I want
to arm you with the tools to take control of
your nervous system before it takes control of your longevity.
(13:54):
Because make no mistake, chronic stress is that accelerator for
biological aging. It's like redlining your car's engine while you're
sitting in the driveway. Eventually something is going to blow.
But before we get into the how to, I want
to share a story from my clinic that perfectly illustrates
(14:16):
how stress can wear a very convincing mask. So a
few months back, a gentleman named Gary. He walked into
my office. And Gary was fifty four. He was a
high level v VP for a tech firm, and he
looked like the picture of health. He had expensive suit,
he was fit, he had an athletic build. But the
(14:38):
second he sat down I could see his hands were trembling,
very subtly. But he looked at me and he said, Doc,
I think I have Parkinson's or a brain tumor. My
body is literally vibrating. He told me that he had
been to three different neurologists. They ran MRI's CT scans,
(15:01):
the blood panels, you know, the whole nine yards. Every
single doctor told him the same thing. Everything looks normal,
You're fine. And fine is the most dangerous word in medicine.
It's the f word of the health world. Gary didn't
feel fine. He felt like he was plugged into an
(15:24):
electrical outlet twenty four to seven. He couldn't sleep because
he could feel his the pulse in his ears. He
had developed a hum in his chest. And when we
looked deeper into Gary's lifestyle, that mystery started to unravel.
He wasn't sick in the traditional sense. He was suffering
(15:45):
from a total collapse of his parasympathetic nervous system. He
was living in a state of high beta brain wave activity.
Basically from five am until midnight. He was checking emails
before where his eyes were fully open and responding to
so called emergencies until the moment he hit the pillow.
(16:08):
So his body had stayed in this fight or flight
mode for so long that his adrenal glands were pumping
out cortisol like it was a fire hose, and that
vibration that he felt that was his nervous system being
unable to downregulate. His body had completely forgotten how to
turn off. So he didn't need a surgeon, he needed
(16:30):
a lifestyle overhaul. So Gary's story it might be extreme,
but I see and hear many Gary's every single day,
and one of the biggest culprits of this modern day
vibration is what I call digital overload. Statistics show that
as staggering eighty percent of smartphone users check their phone
(16:53):
within fifteen minutes of waking up. I want you to
think about that, before you've even thanked the universe for
another day of life, you're invited the entire world into
stress you out, You've got work stress, and political chaos,
in social media envy. You invite it right into your
bed before you're awake. So this creates a dopamine loop
(17:18):
that fries your focus and it keeps your cortisol spiked.
So if you want to be that change, you have
to implement a digital sunset. So this is how you
do it. This is why I tell my patience that
the sun should set on our devices thirty minutes before
they intend to sleep. And that blue light that's hitting
(17:38):
your retinas tells your brain it's high noon, and it
suppresses melatonin production and it keeps your brain in that
high beta state. So if you can't go thirty minutes,
start with fifteen minutes, put the phone in another room,
or buy an actual alarm clock. I do you remember
those and stop using your phone as that bedside companion.
(18:03):
Another tool I've been teaching is a concept of third space.
In our hyper connected world, the lines between work you
and home you have been completely blurred. For those of
you working from home, the commute is now a just
ten steps from your desk to the kitchen table. That
third space is the transition period between the first space,
(18:26):
which is work, in the second space, which is your home.
In the old days, the drive home servatives as a
natural buffer. Now we carry the stress of a four
forty five meeting directly into dinner with our spouse and
our kids. So to master stress, you must intentionally create
that third space. It could be a ten minute walk
(18:47):
around the block, or a quick session of stretching, or
simply sitting in your car for silence for five minutes
before you walk through the front door. Use that time
to consciously shed the work persona. And if you don't,
you're just bringing the vibrating executive like Gary home to
your family. Now, let's talk about a biological control all
(19:11):
delete for your brain. When you feel that surge of anxiety,
that tidening in your chest, you don't have to be
a victim to it. You have the manual override for
your nervous system and this is what you do. That's
first up is the four seven to eight breathing and
that was popularized by doctor Andrew Well. It's simple, it's free,
and it's powerful. And this is your three step in
(19:34):
hel through your nose for four seconds, hold that breath
for seven seconds, and force fully exhale through your mouth,
making a little little sound if you will, for about
eight seconds. That ratio forces your heart rate to slow
down and signals the vegus nerve to kick into a
rest and digest response. It's physically impossible to remain in
(19:57):
a full blown panic state if you perform four rounds
of this correctly. And next up is the NSDR or
non sleep deep rest. This is a game changer for
those who feel like Gary. It's a form of guided
relaxation similar to yoga that leads your brain into a
state of deep calm without falling asleep. Just ten to
(20:21):
twenty minutes of that non sleep deep rest can be
more restored sort of for you than a two hour nap.
It lowers baseline cortisol, and it helps to repair those
frayed wires of your nervous system. Okay, so my line
is stress is a choice. Mostly I know that sounds harsh,
(20:42):
but while we can't control the stress or is the traffic,
or your boss or the bills, we can't control our
reaction to them. Chronic stress accounts for up to ninety
percent of all primary care visits, and if the silent
driver of inflammation, heart disease in decline is that is stress,
then we need to learn how to reset it. So
(21:04):
don't wait until you're vibrating like Gary to use this seriously.
Start your digital sunset tonight, reclaim your third space tomorrow,
and use the four seven eight breathing technique the next
time someone cuts you off in traffic. We've got plenty
more to cover this hour, including our health Alternative of
(21:24):
the Week with a look at a natural supplement that
can help support your health. And if you've got a
question or you'd like to something for me to cover
on air, head over to our website at doctor Bob
dot com and drop me a line. I'm doctor Adam
Brockman and this is the Doctor Bob Martin Show. We're
going to take a quick break to hear from our
sponsors who make this health education possible. Stick around. We're
(21:46):
just getting started this hour on your path to total
health mastery. We'll be right back.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Everybody's got the mistakes, but everybody's got it joys to make.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
Everybody needs to.
Speaker 7 (22:03):
Leave the faith.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
Many you taking yours money? You in fun. Welcome back
to the Doctor Bob Bardin Show. Doctor Adam Brockman here,
and we've been talking about stress awareness this hour, but
I want to pivot to something different, and that's a
(22:27):
biological stress. Look, we're right in the thick of allergy season.
The trees are budding, the grass is turning green, and
for many of you listening, your sinuses are currently screaming
for mercy. We spend so much time spring cleaning our
garages in our closets, but when was the last time
you spring cleaned your microbiome? And I'm talking about the
(22:51):
entry points here, folks. Your nose and your mouth. They
are the front lines of your immune system. And if
you're not washing your nose, you're essentially leaving the front
door wide open for every allergy or pathogen and tail
to set up camp. And that's why I am a
massive advocate for clear nasal sprays in the spray dental
(23:12):
defense system. And here's the deal. Clear nasal spray isn't
your typical sailing spray. And while regular sailing just rinses,
Clear actually prevents the bad guys from sticking to your
nasal tissues in the first place. It's a smart defense.
It moisturizes, it cleanses, and it doesn't have the nasty
(23:34):
rebound effect you get from those chemical laden over the
counter sprays. And don't get me started on the mouth.
If you're still using mouthwash that burns like gasoline, you're
nuking your oral microbiome, both the good and the bad.
And that's why you need Spry. Whether it's the gum,
the mints, or the toothpaste or the mouthwash, Spry uses
(23:57):
the same xylotol power to create and envy where your
teeth stays slick and bacteria stays away. It's the easiest
health hack that you'll ever find. It's time to stop
masking the symptoms and start creating the environment. You can
find Clear and Spry at clear dot com. That's spelled
x L e r dot com, or you can head
(24:19):
over to your local CBS target or sprouts. They're right
there on the shelf waiting to help you breathe easier.
And trust me, your sinuses. Well, thank you, and your
longevity stats will look a whole lot better. Be the
change for your health today starting with spry and clear.
And we often talk about heart health, brain health, and
(24:40):
gut health as the big three of longevity, but I
want to propose a fourth, and that's airway health. If
you are a mouth breather, because your nose is constantly congested,
you are bypassing your body's natural filtration system. Mouth breathing
triggers a fight or flight response in your nervous system.
(25:01):
It increases your heart rate and can even change the
structure of your face over time. By using Clear to
keep the nasal passages clear. In this spread dental defense
system to keep your oral cavity alkaline and clean, you're
not just avoiding a cold. You're telling your nervous system
that it's okay to relax. You are moving from a
(25:23):
state of survival to a state of thriving. And statistics
show that people with chronic oral inflammation are at a
significantly higher risk for cardiovascular issues. In some studies suggest
as much as a twenty to thirty percent increase in risk.
And this isn't just about having a menty breath or
a clear nose for your morning jog. This is about
(25:44):
protecting the gatekeepers of your entire biological system. So if
you want to take control of your internal environment this spring,
don't wait until you're already miserable. Longevity is about proactive maintenance,
not react of damage control. So here's your smart defense
protocol for the rest of allergy season and maybe just
(26:07):
continue it on throughout throughout the MANSA ahead. First, start
with the morning flush before you even have your coffee.
Hit each nostril with two sprays of clear. Clear out
the dust and dander that settled while you were sleeping.
Number two, the post meal spry after lunch, pop a
couple of Spry xylotol mints or a piece of spry
(26:30):
gum that resets the pH in your mouth and it
prevents that fuzzy feeling on your teeth while where those
bacteria are thriving. And finally, let's talk about the digital
sunset connection. We talked earlier about that digital sunset for
your brain. Make clear nasal sprays part of that routine
cleanse the day's pollutants out of your nose before your
(26:52):
head hits the pillow to ensure that you're breathing through
your nose all night long. This is just a simple
secret to deep, restorative sleep. So there you have it.
We have the tools to fight back against these invisible invasions,
so don't let allergies get the best of you. Arm
yourself with the science as xylotol, and that's through the
(27:13):
spry dental defense system in clear nasal sprays. Protect your
microbiome and take control of your health from the very
first breath of the day. Okay, I think we have
time for a quick question before break. Let's get to
one from Mike in Michigan, and Mike asks what supplements
may help support someone with congestive heart failure. Mike, that
(27:37):
is a important question, and yes, congestive heart failure is
very serious. But the heart is one of the most
adaptable muscles that there are, and when you combine smart nutrition, exercise,
and even evidence based supplements, you can often stabilize or
even strengthen that cardiac engine. But let's go ahead and
(27:59):
start with the fundamentals. First. You must stay consistent with
your prescribed medicine or your medical therapy. I want you
to never replace your medication without supervision, especially in this
case with congestive heart failure. The supplements that we're going
to talk about today are designed to help support your
doctor's work. Number one on this list is going to
(28:20):
be co enzyme Q ten. So congestive heart failure patients
often are depleted in this heart energizing molecule, especially if
they're on statins so supportive. Typical support range is about
two hundred to three hundred milligrams per day. So think
of coenzyme Q ten as that spark plug for the
(28:41):
mitochondrial in the heart cells. It helps to support that
atp your body's biological engine. And next, I want you
to consider a somethlement we just talked about on the show,
which is N one one. It is a nitric oxide
supplement that does wonders for our overall cardiovascular health. Again,
(29:03):
you can find that supplement at N one dot com
and I encourage you to go back and listen to
the episode that just aired recently with doctor Nathan Bryan
of N one oh one. And next, we have magnesium
especially people. You know most people are deficient in this
as critical for muscle relaxation and steady rhythm and vascular tone.
(29:27):
And I suggest using magnesium glycinate in this case, and
a couple of other ones real quick or L carnotine.
It's another favorite of mine. It's like a shuttle that
carries the fatty acids into the heart for clean fuel.
The good fatty acids, I should say, studies have shown
that two grams daily can help to improve exercise tolerance
(29:50):
and reduce fatigue from CHF. You can add d ribos
that's a natural sugar molecule that feeds that energy cycle.
People often notice and proof stamina within just a few
days of using this two to three times a day.
And finally, the good fatty acids, the omega three fish oils.
(30:11):
They reduce inflammation, help to stabilize that heart rhythm. You
can aim for about two to three grams of these
omega threes per day. So that's your healing stack. The
N ONEH one, coenzyme, Q ten, magnesium, L carnatine, d
ribos and omega threes. You need to combine that with movement, hydration,
(30:32):
and clean eating. Those aren't just supplements, they're signals that
tell your heart, hey, let's rebuild. Okay, there you go, Mike,
thank you for again for your question. Let's go ahead
and take a quick break before our health alternative of
the week. You're listening to the Doctor Bob Martin Show.
(30:55):
Do you know about your body's most important signaling molecule.
It's calleditric oxide, and without it you lose energy, endurance
in circulation from head to toe. That's where doctor Nathan
Bryan's N one oh one comes in. They're the world's
nitric oxide innovation experts, backed by Nobel Prize winning science,
(31:16):
helping your body restore its natural power to expand blood vessels,
deliver oxygen and energize every cell. More nitric oxide means
better heart health, faster recovery, and sharper mental focus. And
whether you're an athlete dealing with blood pressure issues are
just wanting to feel years younger, N one oh one
has the proven science based solutions to get you there
(31:39):
naturally and safely, So don't wait for fatigue or poor
circulation to slow you down. Call eight three two seven
seven nine four four three five right now. That's eight
three two seven seventy nine four four three five, or
go online to N one oh one dot com. That's
N one oh one dot com.
Speaker 7 (32:00):
Now more than ever, it is important to have a
healthy immune system. Many health professionals agree that probiotics are
a leading natural therapy for boosting immune health. Why because
seventy percent of your body's immune cells reside in the
GI tract. By taking a superior probiotic daily, like Doctor
o'heres Probiotics, you can enhance your overall immune system and
(32:21):
immune response. The key to Doctor ohero success is the
five hundred plus post biotic metabolites that are in each capsule.
Post Biotic metabolites are important to the regulation of most
systems in our body. For a short term immune boost,
try Doctor Oheres Propolis Plus. Merging nature and science. Doctor
o'heres Propolis Plus combines Brazilian green propolis, vitamin e, astesanthon,
(32:46):
and tocotrianols for additional and powerful immune support. Be proactive
about your immune health. Ask your retailer today about Doctor
Oheres Probiotics and Doctor Oheres Propolis Plus Today, also available online.
Speaker 5 (33:02):
So you.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
So you Dad? I am?
Speaker 4 (33:13):
I'm I'm a bush of his number Simoncible, the one
never single Mind's a Bob, I don't need.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
I'm Welcome back everyone. I'm doctor Adam Brockman, and you're
listening to Health Talk America presents The Doctor Bob Martin Show.
We're diving back into the thick of things, and it
is time for one of my favorite parts of the show,
which is the health alternative of the Week. Now, before
(34:06):
we get into the what in the how, I want
to prepare you for the woe. If you've ever walked
into a health food store and you've smelled a certain
bottle of herbal supplement and immediately looked around to see
if a pack of wet dogs have been living in
the ventilation system, or perhaps if someone had hidden a
(34:27):
pair of gym socks in the radiator, then you've already
met today's superstar. We're talking about Valerian root. It is
arguably the smelliest, most pungent, and most fragrant, to put
it politely, herb in the nature's pharmacy. But don't let
the scent of a locker room fool you. Beneath that
(34:48):
stinky exteriorize one of the most powerful evidence based tools
for deep sleep and profound muscle relaxation that is known
to mand So if you've ever been tossing and turning,
or if your muscles feel like they've been wound up
like a piano wire, this is a conversation that you've
been waiting for. So in the world of herbal medicine,
(35:09):
that smell is a marker of potency. So when I
see patients in my clinic who are struggling with chronic
tension or insomnia, I often tell them that Nature didn't
design medicine to always be a gourmet experience. Nature designed
it to work. Valerian root has been used for over
two thousand years, and that's dating back to ancient Greece
(35:31):
and Rome. Procrates described its properties, and Galen later prescribed
it for insomnia. They didn't have fancy laboratory extraction methods
back then. They just knew that if you could get
past the smell, your central nervous system would later thank you.
So we live now where everything is sanitized and artificially scented.
(35:53):
We've been conditioned to think good for me equals smells
like lavender or vanilla. But root is a reminder that
real medicine comes from the earth. It's gritty, it's raw,
and it's undeniably effective. So how does the stinky root
actually work? To understand valerian we have to talk about
(36:13):
a little something called gabba and think of gabba as
your brain's natural brake pedal. So when you're stressed, or
you're anxious, or you're unable to sleep, your brain is
like a car with a gas floor, the gas pedal
floored while it's in neutral, so you're having at eight
thousand RPMs, but you aren't going anywhere except towards a burnout.
(36:35):
So valerian root contains valeric acid, which does two amazing things. First,
it stimulates the brain to release more gabba. Second, it
prevents the breakdown of gaba that you already have, so
it's essentially doubling down on your body's ability to chill out.
And many people call valerian root a nature's valume. And
(36:57):
while it does have a catchy nickname, it's actually quite
scientifically accurate. So we got these modern benzodiazepines like valium
and xanax that work on exactly the same GABA receptors. However,
whereas the pharmaceutical versions can leave you feeling like you
hit your brain with a sledgehammer, it leaves you groggy, addicted,
(37:20):
or feeling like a zombie, Valerian root cts more like
a gentle nudge. So we have this comprehensive analysis of
over sixty plus studies that have published that found over
nearly forty years of work found that Valerian root can
significantly improve sleep quality and reduce the time it takes
(37:40):
to fall asleep. So in one of these clinical trials,
thirty percent of women reported improved sleep quality compared to
just four percent in a placebo group. So that's a
seven hundred and fifty percent increase in efficiency over Basically,
you know those numbers. Those are numbers that we can't ignore.
So when you're chronically stressed or you're sleep derived, your
(38:03):
body stays in this sympathetic state, and that's that flight
or the fight or flight mode. This causes your muscles
to say hypersensitive, so you're not just just tired, you're
physically bracing for a disaster that never comes. And this
is where Valerian root shines. By increasing those GABA levels,
(38:24):
it doesn't just calm the mind, it sends a cease
and desist order to the muscles. It allows the physical
body to finally drop its guard. So when my patients
take valerian there are recovery times. As far as sports
medicine and rehab go often speed up because their bodies
are actually resting during the night. You don't heal when
you're awake, you heal when you're in deep restorative sleep.
(38:48):
So one of the biggest mistakes people make with valarian
root is treating it like advild. They take it one capsule,
wait thirty minutes, and say, I don't feel anything. Valerian
It's not a one and done miracle. It's a cumulative herb.
So these research it shows that while some people feel
it the first night, the real therapeutic benefit typically kicks
in after one to two weeks of consistent nightly use.
(39:11):
You have to have that build up in the system,
and you have to give your GABBA receptors times time
to recalibrate. So the good thing is there's no hangover.
Unlike many of those overcounter sleep aids that leave you
feeling like your head is filled with that codd the
next morning, Valerian root typically has no hanover effect. You'll
wake up refreshed because you actually achieve that deep stage sleep.
(39:36):
So there you have it. I want to arm you
with this knowledge. Don't be afraid of this stinky secret.
Embrace it. Your muscles will be looser, your mind will
be clearer and you'll finally get the rest that you deserve.

Adam Brockman, and folks, we've reached the end of this
hour and I want to go ahead and close with
our health mystery of the Week. I want you to
imagine walking into a high stakes courtroom in the middle
(41:44):
of a brutal Chicago winner. The wind is howling outside,
everyone is wearing three layers of wool in the air
is as gray as it is wet. Then you see Margaret.
Margaret is a powerhouse attorney. She's a litter closer who
handles huge acquisitions before her second cup of coffee. But
(42:05):
today Margaret looks different. She has a deep golden bronze
tan that looks like she just spent three weeks on
a private beach in the Maladives. You'd think that she
was the picture of health, right, but here's the reality.
Margaret hasn't left the city in six months. She's dragging
her feet like they're made of lead. In during a
(42:27):
ten minute recess. She isn't reaching for a water bottle
or protein bar. She's tearing open packets of salt from
the cafeteria and licking them clean. So this isn't a quirk,
this isn't a wellness glow. This is a medical siren.
Margaret's winter tan was actually the first big clue in
this mystery. You know, most doctors look at this high
(42:48):
achieving woman with fatigue and say, you're stressed, you're depressed,
take a vacation. But that ignores the physiological reality of
what happens when the communication line between your brain and
you're adrenal glands completely snaps. She wasn't just tired, she
was depleted. Her blood pressure was bottoming out at ninety
over sixty. She felt dizzy every time she stood up
(43:09):
to address her judge. It wasn't just a tan. It
was a condition called Addison's disease. And that's a primary
adrenal insufficiency, and that's the bodies it stops producing enough cortisol,
and when the brain senses this, it starts to pump
out a hormone to try to jumpstart the adrenals. The
problem is this hormone shares a molecular precursor with a
(43:32):
hormone that stimulates your skin's pigment cells. So the result
that you turn bronze when your internal battery is hitting zero.
And what does she do. She turns to salt. So
let's talk about salt. We've been told for decades that
salt is the enemy, the white crystal, a death for
our blood pressure. But for someone like Margaret, salt was
(43:52):
her lifeline. Your adrenal glands produce a hormone that's called aldosterone.
Think of the aldosterone as the securecurity guard for your
body's minerals. It tells your kidneys to hang on to
sodium and get rid of potassium. When the drenals fail,
the security guard goes on strike, so your body starts
dumping sodium at a staggering rate. So Margaret's brain was
(44:14):
screaming for salt because her blood volume was literally shrinking,
and without enough sodium, her heart couldn't pump blood effectively
to her brain. So this wasn't a craving in the
way you crave a chocolate chip cookie. This was a
survival mechanism. She was licking those salt packets because her
body was trying to keep her from collapsing on the
courtroom floor. All right, So that's all the time that
(44:37):
we have for today's journey in the world of health
and wellness. If you missed any part of the show,
