know that your erratic sleep schedule could be silently orchestrated
in a heart attack. I'm not talking about getting too

(01:21):
little sleep. I'm talking about the chaotic pattern most of
us call normal. In news research, it reveals that people
with irregular sleep patterns face a twenty six percent higher
risk of major cardiovascular events, even when they've been getting
the recommended seven to nine hours nightly. That weekend sleep

This is the Doctor Bob Martin Show, and your health
transformation starts now. Did you know that your irregular bedtime
could be silently affecting your heart even if you're getting
the recommended eight hours of sleep. So imagine thinking that

(05:01):
you're doing everything right for your health, only to discover
that when you sleep matters just as much as how
much you sleep. All right, So welcome to this week's
flagship story, where we're going to dive deep into groundbreaking
research that's turning everything we thought we knew about sleep
and heart health completely upside down. These recent studies have

(05:24):
revealed the shocking truth that erratic sleep schedules can more
than double your risk of heart attack and stroke, regardless
of the total sleep duration. Isn't just another get more
sleep story. This is about the thief that's been robbing
millions of people of their cardiovascular health. Well, they thought
they were doing all the right things, played by all

(05:45):
the right rules. And here's what happened and why it
matters more than you might think. And so the study
in twenty twenty five, these researchers at Oregon Health and
Science University, they drop this bombshell that's forcing the medical
community to completely rethink sleep advice. The study it studied
heart failure patients that revealed that even moderate irregular activity

(06:10):
in their sleep patterns doubled the risk of serious clinical events,
including those emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and even death. And
this was all these studies happened within six months of
hospital discharge. But this isn't just about people who are
already sick. Supporting studies that tracked over eight thousand US

(06:31):
adults found that irregular sleepers were twenty six percent more
likely to suffer cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure, in
stroke compared to those with consistent sleep schedules. In the
most irregular sleepers, they faced more than twice the risk
of developing cardiovascular disease. And the American Heart Association has

(06:53):
been so convinced by this mounting evidence that they've now
added sleep quality to their Life's Essential eight recommendations for
optimizing heart and brain health, placing consistent quality sleep right
alongside physical activity and a healthy diet as pillars of
cardiovascular wellness. Now, let's get personal for a minute. If

(07:16):
you're a midlife woman that's juggling work, deadlines, family responsibilities
in that Netflix serious series that you just have to finish,
you're exactly who the researchers are most concerned about. And
the data shows that people age forty five in older
face the greatest cardiovascular risk from inconsistent sleep patterns, with

(07:38):
women being even higher, and they're most affected due to
the hormonal changes in the caregiving responsibilities to stress with
that that fragment their sleep schedules, and heart failure patients,
they represent another vulnerable group where the stakes are even higher.
In the study, the participants who experienced clinical of events

(08:00):
during the six month follow up period. They're staggering. Two
thirds of them were classified as moderately irregular sleepers, compared
with only a third who maintained regular sleep schedules. So
that's not just stats. Those are real people whose lives
are impacted by something seemingly simple as a bedtime routine.

(08:21):
But here's where it gets even more troubling. Even people
who think that they're doing all the right things, getting
seven to eight hours of sleep per night, they still
have this elevated risk if the sleep comes at wildly
different times or in fragmented chunks throughout the day. So
let's dive a little bit further into what the data

(08:43):
actually tells us. So the study that happened just this year,
it used wrist worn devices to objectively measure sleep patterns
in real world conditions, not an artificial environment like a
sleep lab. This means that we're looking at how people
actually sleep in their own beds, dealing with the real
life stressors in their real life schedule and the hazard

(09:07):
ratios that was what's really revealing here. Participants with moderate
sleep irregularly, they showed a two point one four hazard
ratio for clinical events, meaning that they were more than
twice as likely to experience serious health complications compared to
regular sleepers. So that severe irregular sleeping patterns, the numbers

(09:33):
they get even more alarming. And there was this complementary
study that tracked over seventy thousand adults using these risk
warn devices found that sleep, the sleep schedules, and the
sleep changes was strongly associated with higher risk of serious
heart events. And the research revealed that the varying sleep timing,

(09:54):
if it varies by more than two hours per week,
it significantly increased part of vascular risk risk, which is
a threshold that millions of Americans routinely cross without a
second thought, with the pattern changing from maybe seven o'clock
one night to ten o'clock one night to midnight another night.
In this biological mechanism behind these fandings, they paint a

(10:19):
compelling picture. When you maintain consistent sleep patterns, your blood
pressure and your heart rate naturally decrease compared to daytime levels.
That cardiovascular recovery period is crucial for heart health. However,
that varying times in the sleep timing, it disrupts the
delicate mechanism that regulate your cardiovascular system, leaving you vulnerable

(10:42):
to adverse outcomes. And folks, this is an important topic,
so I want to cover this a little bit in
further detail. When we come back from break. You're listening
to the Doctor Bob Martin Show.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
He's got on your book. That's what I grant to say.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Welcome back to the Doctor Bob Martin Show, Doctor Adam

I want to remind you about our incredible listener resources,

And remember you can always call our toll free hotline
at eight hundred six oer O six eight eight two
two that's eight hundred six aero six eight eight two
to two. All right, let's let's get back in today's
conversation on erratic sleep. And here's where things get controversial,
in quite frankly a little frustrating. For for decades, the

(11:55):
medical establishment has hammered home one simple message, and that's
get eight hours of sleep. The sleep quantity was keen
and timing was treated as a minor detail. These sleep clinics,
wellness apps, and health experts, they built an entire business
model on this more is better philosophy. But this new
science is revealing that we've been missing half the equation.

(12:19):
It's not just how much you sleep, it's when you
sleep that can literally be a matter of life and death.
And so some medical experts and professionals argue that the evidence, it's,
while compelling, comes primarily from observational studies that can show
correlation but not definite causation. And they point out that

(12:40):
people with irregular sleep schedules might have other risk factors
shift work, high stress levels, poor diet. Then these can
contribute to cardiovascular problems. And I agree that's a fair point,
But the consistency of findings across multiple large scale studies,
it's hard to dismiss yes. So let's get practical on this,

(13:03):
because knowledge without action is just information. So I want
to give you a roadmap to protecting your cardiovascular health
through sleep consistency. So I want you to first, first off,
let's set a sleep window. Choose a bedtime in a
wake time that is realistic for you that you can maintain,

(13:23):
maybe even as much as seven days a week, and
that means the weekends too. Your cardiovascular system, it doesn't
take breaks for some Saturday night fun. So if you
set phone alarms, maybe not just for waking up, but
also starting your for a wind down routine. So set
alarm for a wind down routine that's maybe thirty minutes

(13:44):
before your target bedtime. In developing that consistent thirty to
sixty minutes of pre sleep routine, that it signals your
body that it's time to transition into rest mode. And
that might include dimming lights, reading, gentle stretching, or even meditation.
And the key is consistency. Your cardiovascular system it thrives

(14:06):
on predictive, being predictable, so mastering your sleep environments important.
You know, maybe keeping your your bedroom cool. I suggest
around sixty five to sixty eight degrees fair and and
that might be a little bit cold for some, but
also keeping your room completely dark and quiet. The research

(14:27):
shows that even minimal light exposure during sleep is associated
with higher cardiovascular disease risk, so consider blackout curtains, imask
and white noise machines. That may be an investment in
your heart health along with your sleep health. And as
far as those who travel, you might handle your schedule
disruptions smartly. When when you have to deviate from your schedule,

(14:51):
like you know travel, work demands, social events, minimize the
disruption by shifting gradually, like maybe fifteen to thirty minutes
at a time, other than to making a huge change
unless that's unavoidable, and then try to return to your
regular sleep schedule as quickly as possible. And it's important
to know when to seek help on your sleep. If

(15:12):
you're struggling to maintain this consistent sleep despite good intentions,
or if you suspect some underlying sleep disorders like sleep apnea,
that's the time to consult with a healthcare provider. Treatment
of sleep disorders can significantly reduce that cardiovascular risk and
make consistency even more achievable. So the story it connects

(15:32):
directly to what we're going to talk about in just
a second with our health alternative of the Week, and
we're going to explore options that are a natural way
to support your circadian rhythm. And folks, of course, I
want to hear from you. I want you to share
your questions about implementing these sleep consistency strategies. You can
share them through our website at doctor Bob dot com.

(15:56):
Share your sleep challenges, your victories, share them on our
social media channels as well, just searching for the Doctor
Bob Martin Show. And so Folks, again, the evidence is clear,
the risks are real, and the solution is within your control.
Your heart it's waiting for you. It's patiently waiting for
you to recognize when you sleep is just as critical

(16:18):
as how much you sleep. So tonight you have the
opportunity to begin protecting your cardiovascular health with something simple
and it's also powerful, and that's a consistent bedtime. This
is more than just sleep advice. It's potentially life saving
shift and how you approach one third of your life.
One third we're supposed to sleep right, So your heart

(16:41):
will thank you, your energy levels will improve, and you'll
join the growing number of people who understand that true
health optimization isn't just about what you do when you're awake.
It's also about giving your cardio vascular system that consistent, predictable,
rested it desperately needs to keep you healthy for the
decades to come. So the clock is ticking quite literally,

(17:04):
but now you know exactly what time to set it for.
All Right, it's time for our health alternative of the week,
blue light blocking lamps for Better Slate. Did you know

(17:34):
the innocent looking LED bulb in your bedroom could be
stealing your deepest sleep? For this week's health alternative, you
don't need complicated routines or pricey gadgets, just a smarter
lamp swap that can lower night time alertness, calm your system,
and help drift you off on time, simply and naturally.

(17:57):
It's a blue light blocking lamp in It's your circadian
rhythm's best friend, disguised as a simple fixture, And unlike
conventional LEDs that flood your eyes with alerting blue wavelengths,
these lamps emit warm, amber or red tones that won't
trigger your brains stay awake alarm. These lamps they turn

(18:19):
the daytime signal on your eternal on your personal internal clock,
so that your body can transition smoothly into wind down
in recovery mode. And your brain, it already runs on
this twenty four hour internal clock that sinks to light
and after sunset, darkness tells your system, your body system,

(18:41):
to power down. It slows your alertness, it lowers your
core temperature, and it primes you for deep, restorative sleep.
But modern lighting, however, it keeps hitting the gas when
your body wants to slow down and break and even
after a couple hours of blue heavy light that's in
the evening, it can meaningfully delay your internal clock and

(19:04):
it cut into your sleep depth. And research from these
leading sleep labs they show that blue light shifts circadian
timing about twice as much as other colors. It's like
mini jet lag that's in your living room or your bedroom,
and in lab settings, even blue light reduces evening sleepiness
and it delays the biological night a nighttime compared to

(19:29):
that dim warm light. So your smartphone, your tablet, your computer,
in those trendy led fixtures, they bathe your eyes in
the same wavelengths that your brain says as midday sunshine.
So no wonder roughly sixty percent of adults report sleep troubles.

(19:50):
So we're living under this perpetual daylight inside our own
homes and even at bedtime. And you don't need this
hard to find. Your blue light blocking bulbs are in
lamps their mainstream. Now there's major retailers and online stores
carry these basic amber or red led bulbs for standard

(20:11):
fixtures that cost about fifteen to twenty five dollars. And
if you're looking for adjustable low blue or blue free
lamps with dimmers, they're about fifty dollars from brands like
Phillips Ge And if you're looking for other specialty companies
like Somni Light in good night bulb. So imagine this
world where your evenings feel calm, your mind unplugs on

(20:34):
que and your sleep deepens night after night. No gimmicks,
just smarter life. That's the quiet power of blue light
blocking lamps. That's been your health alternative of the week.
All right, stick around, folks, we're coming up on a break.

let's get back in today's conversation with our health outrage

(22:08):
of the week.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
On eas the Health Oubridge. Because it's budd.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
Folks, did you know that a harmless social media trend
has has taken the lives of at least twenty children
in recent months. We're talking about the shocking reality of
a TikTok challenge. It's called a Blackout challenge. It's a
viral nightmare that exposes the dark underbelly of the algorithm
driven content machine. And it's not just another cautionary tale
about social media gone wrong. This is a health crisis

(22:50):
that it demands accountability. And today we're going to pull
back the curtain on what I consider a very preventable
trategy that is happening in this digital age, and this
Blackout challenge. It sounds the deceptively simple to these young
kids and teens participants. They deprived their brains of oxygen
by choking themselves with belts, bags, or their bare hands

(23:12):
until they lose consciousness, all while recording the experience for
so called social media fame. And what they're chasing is
this brief euphoric sensation and what experts call the body's
desperate response to oxygen deprivation. But here's what the challenge
doesn't tell you. When you cut off oxygen to your brain,

(23:34):
you're essentially playing Russian Roulette with your central nervous system.
In that line between blackout, in permanent brain damage, or
even death, it's razor thin and the staggering statistics they
speak for themselves. And while the CDC documented eighty two
deaths from a choking game between nineteen ninety five and
two thousand and eight, this recent TikTok resurgeon has accelerated

(23:56):
this strategy at a very fast and alarming rate. In
just the past few a few months, we've seen at
least fifteen to twenty children die from this challenge, and
with victims as young as eight years old. And here's
where the story it takes a truly disturbing turn. This
wasn't just about the kids stumbling upon dangerous content. TikTok's
algorithm is actively serving up these deadly videos to children,

(24:19):
basically like a digital drug dealer that's targeting the most vulnerable.
And consider this heartbreak case of a ten year old.
Court documents reveal that by the time this victim viewed
the Blackout challenge, TikTok knew it was already circulating and
that the algorithm was directing the content to children and
this platform. It claims this through the court documents, that

(24:41):
this platform was fully aware that the challenge had already
been implicated in the death of several children, some that
were as young as twelve at the time. So if
you think about that for just a moment, TikTok's they
have a very sophisticated algorithm. It's designed to keep users
engaged at any cost, and it was literally feeding lethal
content to elementary school children. And so this Social Media

(25:04):
Victims Law Center, it puts it very bluntly and says
TikTok unquestionably knew the challenge was going viral on their
platform and should have known that failing to take immediate
and significant action would result in more injuries and deaths.
So let's put some faces to these statistics, because behind
every number is a family that's been destroyed by this

(25:25):
preventable tragy. There was a twelve year old from Ohio
whose mother said that I have parental controls on everything,
but these videos can pop up in out of nowhere
and be seen by children no matter what you do.
And then there was another victim that was just eight
years old from Texas, a twelve year old from Great Britain,

(25:46):
and a twelve year old from Argentina. So we're not
talking about isolated instances in distant places. There happening all
across America, in the world. In homes where loving parents
thought their children were safely scrolling through day videos and
pet clips. And this trauma extends far beyond these immediate victims.

(26:06):
We're talking about siblings who discover their brother or sister unconscious,
parents who perform CPR on their own children, and families
are torn apart by this guilt and grief. This is
the true cost of just this negagleance on the part
of these algorithms are dressed up as this user generated content,
and for years, social media giants have hidden behind something

(26:29):
known as the Section two point thirty of the Communications
Decency Act, claiming that they're just neutral platforms publishing third
party content. But the legal landscape is finally shifting. In
this landmark case known as Anderson versus TikTok, the US
Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, they ruled that
the TikTok's algorithm could be treated as the platform's own

(26:53):
speech rather than merely hosting content. And that's the distinction
there is massive. It means that TikTok could be held
directly liable for death caused by their content that is
promoted to children through their algorithm. And it's not about
censorship or limiting free speech. It's about holding these apps
accountable for these profit driven algorithms when they become weapons

(27:17):
that are targeting our children. So, folks, if you have concerns,
I want you to ask your kids or your grandkids
these critical questions like have you seen any videos about
holding your breath or passing out? Or do you or
any of your friends talk about challenges that involve not breathing?
Or Another another question would be what would you do

(27:39):
if you saw something dangerous online? And again, these are
things we need to know what our kids and grandkids
are doing. So this blackout challenge, it's not just about
it's not just like a TikTok problem or social media problem.
So it should be a wake up call about these
unchecked power of the algorithms that are manipulating and targeting
our children. And so when when you know, selling an

(28:01):
ad on these platforms, when it becomes more important than
the young lives themselves, that's when engagement metrics need to
override and we need to look at basic public safety
because I think at that point we've lost our way
as a society. But you know, there change is possible.
Every lawsuit that's filed, every parent who speaks out every

(28:24):
time you ask questions to your kid, every politician who
demands accountability of these platforms. It brings us closer to
a digital world that protects, rather than exploits, our children.
So the question isn't necessarily whether we can afford to act,
it's whether we cannot afford to act because right now,
in bedrooms across America, children are one algorithm of recommendation

(28:47):
away from from harming themselves or potential tragedy. So again, folks, again,
keep your keep your voices loud, keep your voices because
they matter. You need to look at this. Your children's
safety may maybe a worth every uncomfortable conversation in every
battle that it takes with big tech. So the time

(29:08):
for corporate accountability is now in these on these cases,
we need to stop these dangerous algorithms from our children.
In some cases, our children children's lives depend on it.
So all right, folks, Well it's we're coming up on
another break, so time to pause and take a quick breather.

let's get back in today's conversation with our product recall

(31:12):
of the week, and we're going to continue the conversation
with keeping our children healthy. All right, folks, this week's
product recall the week continues to hit close to home
for every parent and grandparent that's listening. We're talking about
a recall of by Heart Whole Nutrition Infant infant formula.

(31:35):
That's by Heart vhy Heart Whole Nutrition infant formula. And
there's been a complete nationwide recall affecting every single can
impacket of this product. And you might ask why, because
of infant botulism. Thirty one babies across fifteen states have
been affected, and that number continues to climb. Now, let

(31:56):
me paint you a picture of why infant botulism, what
it looks like, because every recognition could save a life.
We're talking about a condition that acts like basically like
a thief in the night. It steals away of baby's
muscle control. Parents watch for constipation that's lasting more than
three days, maybe weak crying that sounds different than usual,

(32:17):
poor feeding, or decreased muscle tone, making your baby seem
kind of almost floppy, and even drooping eyelids. So these
aren't symptoms that need to be weighted on. You need
to enlist the help of a healthcare professional. And here's
what's particularly shocking with this preliminary lab results. They found
that the bacteria that produces botulism toxin in an open

(32:40):
can of by Heart formula from California, and while no
other unopened products have been tested, the FDA isn't taking
any chances. If you have by Heart formula in your
home right now, just stop stop using it, don't use
another drop or any of the powder, throw it away
or return to the store immediately. Then I have some
hot soapy water and clean every surface, bottle and utensil

(33:04):
that touched the formula. Think of botulism spores as an
invisible enemy that needs to be completely eliminated. But the
good news that no deaths have been reported in the
FDA assures us that they there won't be any formula shortages.
But the bad news this outbreak began a few months ago,
which means it's been flying under the radar for a

(33:25):
few months already. So parents, this is your wake up
call to become product recall detective detectives. Look at the
FDA recall alerts, check your batch numbers religiously, and never
assume that expensive means safe. Your vigilance in this is
your baby's first line of defense. Remember, when it comes
to infant safety, there's no such thing as being too cautious.

(33:47):
So here's your reminder to stay informed, stay alert, and
keep your family safe. All right, let's get to a
caller question from Genie Renee.

Speaker 4 (33:59):
Hight. My name is Jeannie Renee Collins, and I was
listening to the Doctor Bob Martin show on Sunday in

nubis Cell for pain. I have bad shoulders that my
dad has an issue on his bum and I just

(34:21):
want to know where we can grab the Nubissel. We
live in Arizona, Maricopa, Arizona. If they just let me
know where I can get the Lubisfell pain cream and
how much it is. I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (36:54):
All right, folks, we'll be right back. You're listening to
the Doctor Bob Martin Show.

Speaker 4 (37:02):
Trouble, you know.

Speaker 2 (37:12):
Welcome back to the Doctor Bob Martin Show. And we've
reached our final stretch of our final hour, and that
means it's time for our health mystery of the week.

(37:37):
Did you know that a tiny facial twitch it can
hide like a cloudy veil a real diagnosis In this
week's health Mystery of the week, Let's join in and
see if we can uncover a medical detective story that
begins with a blank and it ends with a breakthrough.
So I want you to picture this. You're getting ready
for work, You're glancing in the mirror and your left

(37:58):
eye starts to flutter. Just stress, right, or maybe too
much caffeine. Well that's exactly what listener Emma thought a
few months ago. But here's where our mystery begins. That
innocent twitch, it didn't just vanish after a good night's
sleep or cutting back on coffee. Instead, it crept downward
on her cheek and it became more pronounced and more relentless.

(38:21):
Emma later called it very psychological and it was a
little tug on her face that felt uncomfortable and embarrassing.
She stayed hydrated, she tremed her caffeine, she tried magnesium,
she did the blue light filters like mentioned earlier in
the show, she did meditation. Yet that morning fog it
kept on rolling in and friends just said, it's in

(38:41):
your head. And then weeks turned to those months. Now,
I want you to fast forward to John Mark, and
he was living his own nightmare. Seven years ago, that's
how long he had endured these severe spasms on the
right side of his face. And he used home remedies
and botox, and then used a watching weight approach and
botox that can calm spasms and roughly about eighty percent

(39:03):
of people, but the relief fades in about three to
four months, so you're back in the chair doing that
botox again. So John Mark, he rode that roll coaster appointments,
copays back and forth, and then that fog returned. So
the culprit it wasn't stress or caffeine. It was a
tiny artery that had gone rogue and it pressed the
facial nerve at that root exit zone. So every heartbeat

(39:26):
became a tap of the hammer on this cable and
then a thumb that was kinking that garden hose. So
this condition is known as Hemi facial spasm. It affects
a few hundred Americans each week, and in published studies
more than eighty percent trace it back to vascular compressing compression. Troubling, yes,
but here's the empowering turn. With the right detective work,

(39:49):
you can solve it. Early on, well over sixty percent
get mislabeled. The stress, the dry eyes, anxiety, and so
this cloudy veil of misdiagnosis, and here we are. So
here's the change to fix to everything for John Mark,
microvascular decompression, and it's placing this protective spacer between the
facial nerve and that offending vessel. And the result and

(40:11):
for the first time in seven years, John Mark woke
up with a still peaceful face. Long term, the surgery
delivers a durable relief for about eighty six percent of
patients in these outcomes, often with immediate improvement. So it's
not for everybody, but for the right candidate, it treats
that root cause. So the real truth is your body

(40:31):
whispers before it shouts, and that's our health Mystery of
the Week and it's Saul and doctor Adam Brockman. Keep
asking those questions, keep advocating for yourself, and remember you
know your body better than anybody. Thanks for joining us,
and join us next time on The Doctor Bob Martin Show.
