During the roundtable discussion on exploring animal health solutions for farmers, Dr Miftahul Barbaruah introduced different models for provisions of animal health services to farmers. Before describing various models and key studies, he highlights factors affecting animal health services delivery, few guiding principles, and global policy options. What are the vital elements for the innovative design of the service delivery-related interventions?

As a regional expert, Miftahul Barbaruah reviews South Asia's enabling environment for the EuFMD project Sustainable Business through Training for Veterinary Paraprofessionals. Following his graduation in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry from Assam Agricultural University (India), he has attended postgraduate and executive programs at prestigious schools like Tezpur University (Master in Business Administration), Asian Institute of Management, Manila (Master in Development Management); Indian Institute of Management –Calcutta (EDP on Managerial Excellence), etc. He also attended expert training related to the OIE Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway and Capacity building of Veterinary Paraprofessionals (VPPs). He is an entrepreneur and currently serving as a director of a development consulting company: Vet Helpline India Pvt Ltd. The company helps organizations conduct studies and implement development projects in animal health care, animal welfare, livestock development, food safety, and public health. He had the opportunity to work for VPP related advocacy programs of GALVmed and The Brooke Hospital for Animals. As a consultant of the Agriculture Skill Council of India, Barbaruah helped develop the National Occupational Standards for various categories of VPPs in India. He also contributed as a member of the OIE Adhoc expert group related to veterinary paraprofessionals to prepare VPP competency and curriculum guidelines. His core areas of expertise include policy advocacy, development planning, project management, capacity building, animal disease risk management, and Agri-livestock value chain development. His research activities acknowledge transdisciplinarity as an approach and aptly integrate veterinary science, animal husbandry with social science for sustainable development.
