Speaker 1 (00:01):
All right, guys, welcome into another edition of the Lee
County Coaches Show. This is our opportunity to get caught
up on what's happening with the Lee County Trojans, and
there's no better person to do that with than with
the head coach himself. So let's bring in Dean Fabreezia coach.
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Bill? Thank you for having me this morning, Coach.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I always love Yeah, absolutely close enough. Kind I split
the difference there. Always enjoy talking with you, coach, And
let's get right to it in terms of the Lee
County football program. You guys enjoying a couple of days off,
I guess from classroom work, hight just one just Monday.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
We'll be back in school tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
So we had we were able to go this morning,
and you can get a lot of good work in.
It's a little cool here, felt felt like fall weather.
You're actually Paul almost going in a winter here this morning.
Had a really good practice and excited to excited to
get back to the game week.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Yeah, absolutely, coach. I bet you are so with it
being a bye week, and I was someone coach reminded
me a few weeks back, you know, to not call
it a buy or not call it an off week,
which is kind of the habit you know that we do. Yes,
it's it's an off week as far as the schedule goes,
but a lot of coaches kind of take offense, So
(01:25):
I don't call it an off week. It's a bye week.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
And I've never really thought about it too much semantics
for me to to fool with. But we didn't have
a game last week, so I thought we had a
good week of practice, got better and now you know.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
We got a baby.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
We got to go on the road to McConnell Talbert
this week and take on North Side, who you know
we played for many many years.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, you know, listen, obviously we are in the you know,
the part of the country. Even though we're a statewide company.
You know, it's located South Georgia. So it's a you know,
run smack dab in the region ones, uh whatever classification
that is, you know Region one, this, Region one that,
and you know, you start to look at the regions
(02:07):
and then break them down, and I got to tell
you this one six, a region that you guys are
a part of, is as tough from top to bottom,
as competitive as anybody.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Well, there's no.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Doubt, and that's the way it's been for a long time.
I remember just that we went to a stretch for
five years in a row. The state champ came from
a region just a few years ago, and I know
I did it looked at something a year or so
ago or two ago, and we were averaging three teams
in the quarterfinals for over a seven eight year period. So,
you know, Region one, you've got great players, you've got
great coaches, you've got communities that care and support the football,
(02:41):
and it's just, uh, you know, it's it's a tough region,
but it's it's it's great football and it's the sec
of school football.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah, so I want to go back to what you
just said. Did you say that? Read that stat to
me again, coach, if you don't mind.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
There was a stretch in one six A we're five
years in a row. I think it was thirteen to fourteen, fifteen, sixteen,
seventeen eighteen the state champion came from Region one six
the region we were in Region one six A. Yeah,
we also I think went a seven or eight year
stretch where we averaged three teams in the quarterfinals every year,
(03:19):
So that's pretty pretty amazing. And there there have been
years I remember before region play started one through five,
we're like twenty sixteen, one through five, we're all from
our region rank one through five in the state. Of course,
this year we've got, you know, three teams that have
been in the top ten all year long, Houston County
probably mostly in the top five, and then also you
(03:42):
had North Side who's been in there quite a few weeks.
So tough regions always and that's something we've been used to,
and you know, it's a great atmosphere to play.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Yeah, and you know, if you look at it, you
guys have been pretty consistent. But you know, we've seen
you know, of course, Thomas County Central has really just
started coming on strong last couple of years. We've had Veterans,
which has kind of been up and down. You know,
they're always kind of in the hunt. Houston County has
(04:12):
certainly made a resurgence big time under Jeremy Edwards. So
you know, it's kind of that region that is almost
like begging for respect and they're slowly getting in across
the board. Right.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Well, you know, I don't know about begging for respect.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
I think our region has been pretty pretty well respected
for years. But you know, we've got some teams that
are are really on the rise, and you've got some
teams that are traditional powers.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
And you talk about north Side this week.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
I mean, if you go over the past twenty years,
there's not too many people who've had the.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Kind of success that They've had.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
A great tradition there, great players, great coaching. So you know,
we know when you go to McConnell Talbert, you better
you better strap it on and be ready to play
like we're gonna have to be this Friday night.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Are talking to Dean Fabrizio, head coach of the league
County Trojan so coach, we're getting here to the short
rows of the season. Obviously got a big one this
week and again they're all really going to be big
from this point forward. But next team up, let's talk
about your next game coming up this week.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
North Side one of Robbins.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know the Eagles, they've got great tradition there, there's
a lot of familiarity. Of course, we've played them for
years now, most notably in the state championship where we
had a rematch in the region game in twenty eighteen,
they beat US last year was our first region loss
in five years at our play, our first region, our
first regular season home loss in I think since twenty sixteen.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
So wow, what it was a tough law.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Of course, that was a tough game or some some
you know, we lost them the last play on a
fumble they picked up ran in after being up twenty
to nothing late in the fourth quarter. So just one
of those crazy games. But you know that was last year.
And you know, they've got a new head coach in
Ben Vailey. Ben worked with US at Lee County in
twenty eighteen when we wont a state titled good good coach,
knowing well their offensive coordinators Nick Ward, who worked five
(06:00):
years for US as an assistant with US here at
Lee County an excellent coach, So a lot of familiarity
with their coaches too, and I've got a lot of
respect for those guys and the job they do.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
They've kind of had an up and down year they've had.
They started off really strong, They've had some injuries. I
know their quarterback was out for a little bit, but
they've he should be back at full strength, and you know,
we expect they're they're certainly in the playoff hunt, and
we expect a tough game from them Friday night.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Yeah, you know, Northside's one of those teams. I mean
you really you never really know what you're gonna get.
Uh And and that's kind of as has sort of
been their calling card coach. If you will, you know,
you've always got to respect him, you can pretty much
just throw the record out the window.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
And that's kind of the case with Northside.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Well, they've got a great tradition there. I mean, they've
been good at football for a long, long long time. Uh.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
You know, football means a lot to that school, in
that community. They've got good players, they're play they play
extremely hard. They've had a few games this year where
they've had some injuries and some bad weeks, but they're.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
Still right in the playoff mix. We're gonna get their
best shot Friday.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, absolutely. So you mentioned the fact that they've had
some players out. Do you know if they if they're
back to one hundred percent, what can you tell us
about North Side?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Most notably the quarterback who was out with the concussion
earlier this earlier this year. I think he's back at
full strength now, especially with an open week last week.
Speaker 4 (07:24):
Or by week or whatever we want to call it.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Uh, So I think he's I would anticipate him being
back and back in full strength, you know the week.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
You know they they they're side. They won't play extremely
hard on that side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
You know, offensively with their quarterback back as a whole
other dimension, Damian Deek and Rodney could pass.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
They've got a big offensive line, a good running back,
good receivers.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
So you know the opponent, Yeah, no question.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Talking to Dean Fabrizio, head coach of the league, Auntie Trojan,
So you've been here obviously, You've been in big games. Uh,
this one last year it was a crazy one. What
can you learn about what happened last year and applied
to this year? Because you had a couple of games,
coach that looked like we're in the bag and kind
(08:10):
of got away from you. Talk about those if those
were teaching moments, which I think they were, how do
you apply that to this year?
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Well, you know, that was as crazy loss as that
I've had in my career, probably last year's game for
the North Side, and you know, so many things transpired
in those last few minutes that had to go just
right for and it's just one of the especially you know,
the last play where we fumble and they run it
back for a touchdown, time expires, and just one of
those crazy things. You know, you try to learn from
(08:40):
those things. I'm obviously the coach. I there's some decisions
I would have made differently. As a team. You know,
we teach just say, man, you've got to go the
full forty eight minutes. Man, you can't can't lapse any
in a game for some components.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
So but you know that was last year.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
You know, we're really not.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Talking a whole lot about that or thinking a whole
lot about that. You know, like I said, in our region,
there's enough motivation in these games just regularly. You don't
need any extra. Well, they beat us last year, they
said this, they did that. You know, we're not into
that stuff. I think, you know, there's plenty of motivation
to win the game. We don't need any extra.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Just like that. I'm sure they don't need the extra either.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah. So but you know, talk about the difference between
that team. Uh, they did come out with the W.
I know they're missing there. They're all everything safety and
the Jones kid is not with them. I think anymore,
and obviously that's a big void in that defensive secondary.
Do you know if he's.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Still out, Yeah, I believe he's he's done for the year, Ricardo,
But there's a good player the Clemson commit.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
You know, it's a little bit different team.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
You know, they had a senior, lad and experienced team
last year, especially on the defensive line.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Got it.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
You've got a new coach coming in and Ben Bailey,
who's a fine football you know, Chad ally Good has
gotten out.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Of a coaching is now.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
He's a really good coach and good friend and he's
the athletic director counting now.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
But you know it's more than just a coaching change,
and that you look at you know, you had Conrad
Knicks there for so many years, and then Kevin Kim's
they're an excellent football coach takes over for him and
is there ten years. And then it was you know,
of course a long time assistant under coach Knicks. And
then you've got Chad ally Good takes over for Kevin
Kinsler and he was a long time assistant.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
So this is really the first.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Time, you know, they that you've got someone from outside
the Conrad Nicks coaching tree and several assistants. You know,
when other places, life happens when there's a coaching change.
So I think it's more than just a regular coaching
change here. You're talking about a probably a lot different
way of doing things, and they've done them for the
last twenty thirty years and they've been very successful with that,
and but you know that's that's different when you get
(10:44):
a change and a changing culture.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
This is what this is.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
You know, you're it's going to take some adjusting and
you know Ben's a fine coach. Uh, he's going to
do a great job there. But you know, there if
there isn't a testament period, and I think that's something
they're going through this year.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, that's the biggest difference.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Yeah, no question. That's a great point to because you know,
after well, I guess it was coach Allygood that came
in and really tried to get away not not completely,
but you know, Northside was always known as the triple
option team and uh, you know, obviously a run heavy team,
and I think Chad you know, wanted to get more
(11:19):
of the passing game, kind of get up to speed
with with where a lot of high school offenses are,
and so I think that there were something I know
you mentioned we're growing pains, and I think there were
some of that. As far as the transitional stuff goes, Uh,
what are they running now, coach? What can you tell
me offensively? What northside? What kind of team will you
see from the offensive side? With northside, Well.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
You know they're running the spread offense. You know, there's
some similarities. Of course, the other offensive coordinator and was
from was that Lee County with us several years there.
They're a head coach was here.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
With us, So there's some similarities.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
To what they do to what we do.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
But uh, you know, obviously there's they're own spin on things.
It's been a little bit different because of the injured
core back injuries they've had this year. You know, they've
had to kind of go to some games, go to
some different some heavier sets and some things like that
that I think they would not run near as much
at the quarterback been healthy. But now that you know
he's back, I think they can get back into their
(12:15):
normal offense. You know, they're a spread team with multiple
offensive quarterback is a thrower and a runner, so he
puts the extra stress on you. But you know, they've
had to do a lot of different things because of
the quarterback situation this year that they've had that you
know probably they wouldn't do normally, So that gives you
a little extra to prepare for.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
How do you feel about your quarterback? Weston shown flashes
last year of brilliance. This year has had a pretty
solid season. Obviously, you need him to step up big
in a game like this and really the games like
this that are coming up, but talk about where you
are with Weston.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Weston has really played well these last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
He's thrown the universe Houston County and versus First Veterans
last week and of course we were two weeks ago.
He had three touchdowns passing versus Veterans in one bushing.
He's playing really good football right now. And you know
the thing he's really starting to do is you see
him start to extend plays. And by that I mean
when a play breaks down, when the first couple of
guys are covered, or he gets a rush, or or
(13:13):
something goes and missing a play, He's able to kind
of get out of that and still makes something happen.
And that's so that's so critical. If a quarterback's able
to do that, and that's the thing we've seen from him.
I know, last last week, two of the touchdowns were
on plays where he kind of scrambled out of there.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
It wasn't designed and.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
The receivers we went to the scramble drill we work
and he hit him for big plays and that's something
he's such a big, strong kid. He's hard to bring down.
He did the same thing against Houston County on a
big third down. They had him in the crash, but
he kind of shrugged away and scrambled around and.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
Made a big play.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And that's the thing that.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
We're seeing from him, in addition to, you know, just
our improvements throwing the ball, is that he's starting to
really learn how to extend plays and he's just feeling
more and more comfortable back there as a quarterback.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
I got you, well, coach Man. And it's gonna be
a big one. It's gonna be Lee County taking on
north Side one of Robbins and uh now again, they're
all gonna be big from this point forward. And again
gotta go up to McConnell Talbert, one of the toughest
places to play in the state. So gonna be a
(14:18):
tall order coach. Wish you the best of lot.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Thank you, Phil, appreciate you all right, See you next week.
There he is.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
That's Dean Fabrizio, head coach of the Lee County Trojans,

I'm your host, Phil Jones. Be sure to join us
next week as we'll bring you the update and who
