Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, guys, welcome into another week of talking Lee
(00:03):
County Trojan football. This is our opportunity to speak with
the head coach of the Lee County Trojans about what's
happening with this football team and who's coming up next,
and of course right now we are in the throes
of the GHSA State playoffs moving on to the quarterfinals.
And joining us now to talk all about it is
(00:23):
the headman of Lee County, Dean Fabrizio. Coach, how's it going.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Well, it's going really well.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Anytime you know, you get to practice practice, still practicing
Thanksgiving week, It's been a really good year and you know,
we're blessed to still be practicing now.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Coach. How many does this make for you, guys?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Oh? I think it's the sixth time in the last
seven years we've been we've practiced on Thanksgiving Week, So
it's always a good feeling, coach.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
A true barometer, a true benchmark of the success that
your football team is having.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Well, I do think it shows a consistency that are
for had and even more impressive as we always play
in such tough regions and you know, the tougher the region,
the harder it is.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
To get that top seed, and you.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Know, the harder it is to get a top seed,
the tougher those first couple of rounds are. So I
think that just shows that you know the consistency of
our program, and really it makes it even more impressive
when you look at it knowing that we're having to
do this coming out of tough regions.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
No question, coach, And obviously you have proven it year
after year, and of course last couple of years you
come up a little shy of your intended goal, which
I guess is every team's intended goal, which is to
win the state championship, to be the last team standing,
so to speak. And this year you guys have won
your first couple of playoff games, rounds one and two.
(01:46):
But as you just kind of alluded to, Coach, you know,
it's the higher you go, the dinner the air gets.
I like to say in this case, you know, the
farther you go, the tougher the competition gets in these
state playoffs. And I would say that's a fair statement
when it comes to describing your next opponent.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Well, there's no doubt you know, Douglas County's twelve and
oh they beat defending champion Langston News earlier in the season.
Since that game, they really have not even been challenged
their last seven eight ball games.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Got a lot of.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Size on both lines of scrimmage, got a lot of
speed at still position spots. Really just an impressive football
team size wise, athletically. You know, Johnny White, their head coach,
does a great job, and you know there's a reason.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
There twelve to oh and you know they sure look.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Like it absolutely absolutely well coach. Obviously, you guys are
here for a reason as well, a great regular season,
and then of course you know here in the playoffs.
As I just alluded to a couple of playoff wins,
including victory over love Joy last week. Talk about the win.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Love Joy came in coming off a huge win upset
Overingham County. Traveled made that four hour trip over there
and really one handily, you know, forty something to a fourteen.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
So they were coming in with a lot of confidence.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
We knew they were going to come in that way,
and we were fortunate we jumped on them right off
the bat had had scored every time we had the
ball on offense in the first half and kind of
cruised into a thirty six to six halftime lead and
the only kind of blemish there as they returned to
kick off for a touchdown when I think we're up
twenty one to nothing.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
But then we you know, jumped right on him.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
In the third quarter, scored two more times and you know,
put it into.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
The well into well out of hand.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
They're going in the fourth and it was running clock
and we got to play a lot of kids in
the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
So another good night.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
You know, Braxton Honer had over two hundred yards rusting
and receiving a couple of touchdowns. West and Bryant another
really good efficient night going the football.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
And running it. Of course his money and he was outstanding.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
I think he was eleven terries one hundred and twenty
five yards in the first half, and it touched a
couple of touchdowns and then Devin, you're even out of
the touchdown.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
They're coming over defense in the first half. So so
really good.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Performance all around by our football team over a good
luck Joy team and as I said, was playing their
best football, you know, coming off our last loss, you know,
the one that you know ended inches away there at
Thomas County. H you know, we played three really good
football games. One big three games in a row, and
hopefully we can carry that momentum up there to Douglas County.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
We go on the road.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Like I said, it's gonna be a big challenge, but
you know, our kids have played in big game atmospheres.
We played in big game atmospheers on the road. We're
we're excited about the challenge. We had a great practice
this morning, and you know our kids are our kids
are ramped up, ready to go.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
We're talking to Dean Fabrizio, head coach of the Lee
County Trojans, as he takes his Trojans into the quarterfinals
this coming Friday night. It's going to be Lee County
taking on Douglas County. You know, you mentioned kind of
briefly the different challenges that this team is going to face. Size, speed,
(05:03):
break it down though when you start talking about schematically,
what is it they do the best. Is it a
good mixture of running pass or is there one side
of the other that they lean to.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
No, They're they're talented all over.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
You know, defensive of their defensive line is big, fast, Uh,
They're they're big.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
Get the linebacker spots, They're super athletic.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
In the secondary, I think they've got seven guys or
Power five offers they counted over on defense. Offensively, their
quarterback a three year starter, dual threat guys very good,
they got a lot of.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Size on the offensive line, They're coached up well.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
They've got three running backs that are really really good,
and then they've got a host of receivers that are talented.
So I mean, they they they're a team that is
you know, there's really no weak links when you look
at them physically, so it's gonna be definitely a challenge.
But you know, we've got some good football players too,
so hopefully we go up there and it's gonna be
a heck of a ball game.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
How much does experience mean? And I know that that
may not mean a lot because obviously a team that
went to the state playoffs, you know, last year, is
going to be somewhat different. There are some key contributors
coming back and even more so from two years ago
and so on and so on. So is that really
(06:19):
kind of overblown when you start talking about playoff experience?
Speaker 2 (06:22):
You know, I don't.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
I don't think it's the end all be all, but
I do think it is a factor, you know, And
I can tell your personal experience. Just when your team
is used to playing keeping the playoffs, the mentality of
that team is a little bit different.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
You know, they're looking at it as that longer run.
They're used to practicing this long.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
They're used to you know, it's not kind of like
you're getting that feeling week nine or week ten that
the season's over. You feel like, hey man, we got
a lot of football left to play. And I think
that's something that it takes years to build up into
and get just in playoff runs. And a lot of
the times that's why the teams that win it are
teams that are usually there every year, or you know,
you very rarely see a team just break.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Through that hadn't been passed the first round and win it.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Usually you see teams that have kind of you know,
gotten closed, gotten closed, and they do it. I think
it's because the players and the mentality of that being
used to practicing so long is a big thing. And
and then you know, being in those big games is huge,
even if you know, maybe it's not year to year,
traditionally they're used to doing it. I think that carries
over from year to year because the older kids are
(07:24):
used to doing it them younger kids follow suits.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
So I do think it is.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Definitely an advantage having played in the playoffs and deep
into the playoffs traditionally, Hopefully it'll be an advantage for us.
And it's been a while since they've been in the
third round. But you know, they certainly have the talent.
You know, they're one of the more talented teams in
the state. They certainly are a state championship contender and
ranked number two of the state and twelve and zero
(07:48):
for a reason.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
So but hopefully, hopefully.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
That is an advantage, And I do think it definitely
plays a factor in it.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
It's not the deciding factor by any means, but it
definitely plays the deciding.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Factor that your kids, are you practicing this long and
playing this long?
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yeah, well, without a doubt. Now, look, no no offense
at all, UH to Douglas County. The last thing we
want to do is give them any kind of bulletin
board material. But it's true too that they have not
played the Thomas County Centrals. UH, and that what I
call a tord schedule of Region one six. Say, how
(08:24):
much does that mean to your team in terms of
the caliber of opponents you've played all season long.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Well, certainly a factor before I get to that. You know,
they played Langston News earlier in the season. It was
a defending state champions, so you know they played some
big games too when they've played some tough teams, particularly
that one. But you know, I think our schedule with
the you know, opening up with like I said, there's
four teams that we played that are region champions. There's
several teams we played that are still playing. You know,
Warner Robbins won their region, they're still playing obviously, Thomas
(08:53):
County still playing, Pulpwood still undefeated and playing. So you know,
we played it, We played tough competition, and we hope
he prepares us for this, not only not only the
physical aspect of it, but the mental aspect of playing
in those big game, high pressure atmospheres. Hopefully it prepares
our kids and they're able to handle that a lot better.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Coach, speaking of playing big time games, big time game atmosphere,
it's going to be at your place. That's got to
be huge for you guys.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Well, Phil, unfortunately that's not the case. We've got to
go up there to Douglas County. Oh what, yes, we
go up there to Douglas County.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
So, oh man, Max Preps has got it wrong.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Then nevermind they do. I guess I better communicate that.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
Make sure do you see that?
Speaker 3 (09:36):
No, Unfortunately, you know they're they're there, they're you know,
we're as a two seat the heat.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
So they get they get to host this game.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
So well scratch that. The en so talk about going
into their place. Long bus ride you guys have got
to make it is uh.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
You know, but you know we're used to kind of
long trips. It's not actually not not a full heck
a lot longer than reach maybe another thirty forty five minutes.
It's uh, so you know, we're used to taking trips
like this. I have not been up to their place.
I know they just redid their stadium facility a few
years ago. It's supposed to be a beautiful venue to
play football at. I'm sure that they'll have a great crowd,
(10:13):
and I'm sure our people will travel, we'll travel. We'll
have a great supportive crowd there as well of our
fans and our contingents.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
So you know, it's it's it's two big time teams.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
It's gonna be a heavyweight battle, and you know, I
think that it's gonna be a you know, it's gonna
be a dang tough one Friday night, and all team's
gonna strap it all and be ready to play.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
It's gonna be a grea high school football game.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
I know. I ask you about Douglas County. I think
it was last week. And you know, I'll say this,
and I've said it before. You're always very straightforward, good bad, Uh,
it doesn't matter. And you said pretty much, Hey, this
seems gonna be tough. They got a lot of weapons,
(10:55):
They're gonna be a tough team. What is it you
saw when you looked at this film there really made
you feel that way. I guess it's offensively, defensively, special teams,
the whole shebang.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
They've just got so many playmakers all over the field.
You know, they got so many guys you can do
things with all in their hands. And then defensively, they're
so so fast on the back end of the second.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
They've got so much eyes up front.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Of the offensive and defensive lines. So I mean that
just jumps out, jumps out at you right away. And
they're very Johnny White and the staff job, they're very well coached.
But that's the thing that jumps out just this year's size.
They've got the athleticism, They've got not just one or
two guys, but they got a whole host of guys
that are athletic. They've got three running backs that are
really good. So those things just jump right out at
(11:41):
you when you see them play, and uh, you know,
there's there's a reason they're twelve to zero.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
There's a reason they're still playing. There's a reason they
beat Langs and US at their place at defending state
champions earlier this year.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
And they're a really good football team, you know, but
you know, that's what you expect to get at this point.
You know, at the sixth A level in Georgia, you're
in the third round. You're probably getting a really really
you know that you look at the eight teams that
are left, there's no easy out. All these teams are
really good. And you know, like I said, our kids
are are excited to be here. They're excited to practice
this morning.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
We feel like we've.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Gotten better throughout the playoffs and we're hopefully going to
get better this week. And you know, we we're excited
to go up there and play this game.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Man, all right now. Let me delete this max Preps
page then and forget about the home field advantage part
of that. But hey, anyway, you got to play the
game somewhere. And as coach once reminded me that last
time he checked, they're all one hundred yards long and
(12:39):
fifty yards wide, right.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
No doubt, no doubt about it. There.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
You know, we've had big games on the road this year,
so you know that, and that's one of the reasons
we play games like that.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
You know, we've had three huge games in the road,
you know.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
Going to uh going into Colpo County, going over to
Houston County in a packed house at Freedom Field, and
then another packed house down there Thomas County Central.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
So we've been in big games, been in high pressure games.
We've been in games with huge crowds. It's really loud.
Hopefully that that's prepared us well for this moment in
this game.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Coach, listen, go get them Friday night. I know you'll
have your team ready. What are you guys going practice
on Thanksgiving? What's that schedule?
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Like, We'll go in the morning early, and you know,
it's exciting to be able to do that as a privilege,
to be able to practice this week. Is a privilege
to be able to practice on Thanksgiving, to work, go
early and then let everybody you know.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Go spend the day with or will get done.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Get done that morning, you know, around ten am, and
go let everyone spend the day with their families, have
a great Thanksgiving, and then you know, we'll come back
that next morning and get on the bus and head
head on up there to Douglasville and get ready to
play a great playoff football game.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Sounds good, Coach Dean Fabrizio checking in with us. It's
going to be Lee County traveling to Douglasville to take
on the Douglas County Tiger. Is going to be a
great football game, one of several quarter final matchups that
we'll certainly be keeping an eye on. And I know
you guys will be too, so be sure to join
(14:06):
us next week. We'll come back next week in talk
with Dean Fabrizio about the game and hopefully we're talking
about a Lee County Trojan win. Coach, best of luck.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Thank you and happy Thanksgiving to you and to all
the listeners out there, Happy Thanksgiving, Thank.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
You, coach, same to you, Bye bye bye. There He
is Dean Fabrizio, head coach of the Lee County Trojans,
and duly noted not at Lee County but at Douglas County.
So Lee County going to travel up there and try
to get the win. It will be a tough task,
but I think this is Lee County this year, guys,
(14:41):
I really do. But we'll find out come Friday night
somewhere around eleven o'clock or so and again win loser draw.
We'll come back next week and talk to coach Dean
Fabrizio about it right here on the Lee County Coaches
Show with myself, Phil Jones and coach Dean Fabrizio. We
are itg next
