Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, guys, welcome in to another week of talking
Lee County Trojan football. Always enjoy the time I get
to spend with the head coach, Dean Fabrizio.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Coach, how you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:10):
I'm doing good.

Speaker 4 (00:11):
You know, I would appreciate you saying the longest tenured
coaches show you've done, although it was interrupted, but since 2014.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
That is true. That is true. Guys, I'll take you back.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
When I did a sports radio show, Dean Fabrizio was
the first coach I spoke to. That's where we became friends,
and we have maintained a personal and professional relationship, friendship
ever since.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
The show probably wouldn't have made it if I hadn't
gone on there. You're right. You're right.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
I mean, I'd be selling vacuum cleaners or something. No,
I do appreciate you. I appreciate having you on, man.
I really look forward to these conversations, for sure.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
As do I. As do I.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
All right, so... I've got the Lee County helmet on
back there. But I've got another one I'm going to
show you, but not just yet.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
We'll have to wait a second and see which one
that is.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
But anyway, Coach, welcome to the show.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Got a great game to talk about from this past
Friday night. Boy, you had everybody on pins and needles. And,
of course, it was Sequoia. And you talked about these
guys last week. We knew this was not going to
be any kind of walk in the park. I mean,
they have really been an up-and-coming team in the classification

(01:33):
for about the last couple of years.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
But you were prophetic. You were right. This was a
tough ballgame, was it not?

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Well, there's no doubt.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
They're coming off an 11-2 season, best season they've had
in a long time there.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
They picked up some kids this offseason, too.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
That are really good players.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
We knew they were going to be a really good
team because Teeter does a great job. Coming off that
huge win over Carroll City all week, you know, our
kids just getting showered with their all-over social media.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
From that game. And then having to make that four-hour trip.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
So I knew we were going to have to really
buckle down and put all those things behind us and
move forward. We got humbled a little bit in the
first half. Played a good football team on the road,
and we had to battle.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Back to win this game at the end.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
So that's a good point. I want to ask you
about that because, you know.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
That Miami-Carroll City game, which you guys won, That was
probably one of the most anticipated games that I've ever
been a part of as far as covering high school
football for all these years. It certainly lived up to
the hype, and boy, it got a lot of hype.
My question to you is sometimes games like that will

(02:40):
live on. Just kind of like you alluded to in
your opening comments there, Was that a concern to you
that maybe things hadn't come down enough to get ready
and focus on a good Sequoia team?

Speaker 5 (02:55):
There was no doubt about that.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
You know, and, you know, our kids, we had never
played Sequoia before. I mean, they're good ways away from us.
You don't hear a lot about them. So I don't think,
you know, as much as we tried to get it across,
I don't think they were always how good.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
A team they really were. And even though we told
them about it and they did know that it was
a good team, but I don't know if we really
took into consideration how good they were.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
And, of course, you know, Every time he turned around,
there was something new on social media about the previous game.
And our team did a good job in practice and working. But,
you know, we went up there, a long trip, and
it was the exact same ballgame.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Versus a really good football team. They're going to win
a lot of games this year.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
They won their first scrimmage, and the first two games
were all mercy roll games. One of them was over
a good Lambert team that then traveled down and beat
Tip County Friday night. Sequoia had mercy roll them the
week before. So they're a good football team, man.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
They're going to win a lot of games this year.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
I want to take a second and acknowledge our sponsor,
that being, of course, Phoebe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. This
is Coach's favorite time of the show where I remind
everybody whether you need complex orthopedic trauma surgery or treatment
for that minor pickleball injury, the team at Phoebe Orthopedics
and Sports Medicine has got you covered.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
They have the largest orthopedics team in southwest Georgia.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
They're experienced physicians, advanced practice providers, certified athletic trainers, and
physical and occupational therapist-focused on restoring mobility, relieving pain, and
getting you back to the activities that you enjoy.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Learn more at Phoebe. Phoebe, a better way to orthopedic care.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
And, Coach, this is your point of the conversation where
you remind everybody.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
I'm done. I'm getting too much hate from the pickleball.

Speaker 4 (04:36):
I'm not going to go there. I'm sure pickleball is
incredibly strenuous. Kudos to all those out there listening that
are listening.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
That play pickleball.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
I got you. All right.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
So getting back to the, to the matter at hand. So,
so you said the guys had kind of buckled down,
had kind of gotten focused. I'm sure though, in addition
to all the hype from the previous game, the fact
that you guys were running into a team, good team
in Sequoia and the fact that it's such a long
trip up there, you know, I think all those things
probably can factor.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
In to game starting out the way they did with
you guys.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Oh, definitely.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
And then, you know, the first play of the game,
we hit a 80-yard touchdown pass. Colin Lawson to Jaden
Upshaw and that kind of, oh, that might be an
easy game. But then they come back and run a
trick play their first play and hit a big play
for a touchdown.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And then we kind of went back and.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Forth, got the lead late in the first quarter. And
then things kind of got away from us.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
We hit an interception.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
We missed a short field goal. They hit some big
plays on us. You know, next thing you know, we're
going in half. We're down 32-21. a lot offensively, but
kind of stubbed their toe. Like I said, missed a
short field goal, got held on down, steeped in their territory,
had an interception.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
And you had to give Sequoia a lot of credit.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
I mean, they really took it to us in the
first half. You know, we win it at halftime. We
settled everybody down. We got, you know, we got things fixed,
got the corrections fixed. And we went from 32 points
in the first half to another stellar defensive performance in
the second half. Zero points again in the second half.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
I think we only allowed.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
Maybe two first downs.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
I think a third one coming back right at the
end of the game. You know, after we went up
by 11. the last 30 seconds.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
So it was really a, you know, a tale of
two halves in this game, so to speak.

Speaker 6 (06:15):
All right.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
So it's interesting. I was going to point that out.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Not only was it a tale of two halves, but
this is really a tale of two, two halves. Because
you guys went down to Carroll City at halftime, 20
to six. So you go into intermission now twice, down
by double digits twice. And you come out in two

(06:39):
second halves and have held the opposing team, two really
good teams, scoreless.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
You know, that needs to be mentioned. That's pretty solid.

Speaker 4 (06:49):
Oh, it would be more solid if we did it
in the first half, too. Carol's thinking about that. It
would be a really good Miami-Norwood team, 42 to nothing.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Yes, all that.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
So they're an exceptional team.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
You know, we've got– a lot of veteran players on
defense and offense, but I think their ability to keep
their composure, correct their mistakes, not panic, are always big.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
In that first half, we.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
Kind of, I call it being caught in a hornet's nest,
where they get us big plays, and all of a sudden,
you've got everybody trying to do everybody else's job, and
that leads to more mistakes.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
But all the credit's got to go to Sequoia. I mean,
they played a heck of a half, really heck of
a game.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
I mean, it was a battle.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Coach, you went into halftime for the second straight week
and you had to kind of give the team a
motivational speech or whatever you did at work. So talk
about what you did say to the team at halftime
at the Sequoia game.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
Well, we just kind of like the week before, of course,
reminding them we're in a similar situation the week before.
We got everybody settled down. We went over adjustments we
needed to make and mistakes we needed to fix. And
we try to be very businesslike at halftime in doing that.
I think just getting everybody settled down there after giving
up some big plays and kind of.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
You know, a little panic setting in and.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Everybody trying to do everybody else's job, just settled everybody down,
went over the mistakes we made, went over the things
we had to do. And, you know, offensively, we had
moved the ball really well. And really, we moved it
well throughout the night. We just weren't– we got down
and kind of stubbed our toes several times. We had
500 and almost 50 yards offense. So a big night offensively. But,
you know, we should usually result in more points. But,

(08:24):
like I said, a missed short field goal and a
couple of interceptions there. getting held on downs deep in their.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
Territory some some uh uh.

Speaker 4 (08:32):
Penalties taking us out of drives you know we opened
the third quarter uh we hold them three and out
and we get it back and the second play uh
dominique ball is a 78 yard run uh and that
gets called back on a penalty.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
So that kind of that kind of.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Cost us field position in the second half it almost
took us the whole third quarter to regain field position
there um so it was it was a battle i
mean it was a tough battle and You know, they
had the ball with, you know, a little over five
minutes left and up 11. And, you know, we stopped
them on defense. We forced a punt, got the ball back,
had about a five, six-play drive, a lot of big

(09:07):
passes in there. And Jordan Bush scores a touchdown with
just about two minutes and, oh, two minutes and I
think 10 seconds left.

Speaker 5 (09:15):
You know, we kick off.

Speaker 4 (09:16):
And, of course, they had their hands team out. But
we kicked it deep and kind of pinned them back. uh,
used our timeouts, got them and, uh, held them to punt.
Now we got about a minute, a minute, uh, 40 minute,
50 seconds left.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
And, uh, you know, Jaden Upshaw returns the punt for
a touchdown.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
So, uh, uh, now that puts us up by, uh,
that puts us up by four. Cause we, we went
for two to get down three the previous time. Well,
now we're up by four and then, uh, they got
the ball back and, you know, they, of course, now
they've got to throw to get down the field and, uh,
Montrevis clay is an interception.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
It returns for a touchdown.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
So, that was really what, while the, the, the scoring
spree right there, you know, when you get a punt return,
the interception return for touchdown.

Speaker 5 (09:54):
Back to back, you're going to score a lot of
points in a short time.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
So that's what happened. That gave us the, the, the,
the 12 point margin of victory.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Wow. That's just incredible, man. That is three.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah. I got you. Yeah. 30, 32, 21.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
And again, you really got to hang your head on
whatever is happening in the second half. with Bull Barge
or whoever it is, making the adjustments at half because, again,
you're talking about two teams that you really have shut
down in the second half, so that's fantastic. But, Coach,
you now have to once again, and I swear you

(10:33):
guys have got one of the toughest schedules in the
state of Georgia.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
Everybody needs to understand that. You guys have now got.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
To get ready for a tough Coquit County football team
and uh this is going to be a big one
and there's.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
A quite a few little inside stories on this.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
Well you know first going back to this sequoia game
you know we had some great performances i already talked
about you know colin lawson throwing for 377 yards jay
nupshaw 12 receptions 231 yards two touchdowns receiving and then
the punt return at the end and you know big
time players make big time plays and jay's a big
time player and he stepped up in a critical moment,
made a huge play. And our, our, our punt return

(11:12):
team did a phenomenal job blocking on that play. We'd
almost blocked some punts earlier in the game. So kind
of had set up the return for us. And it was,
it was a big return and a big play. And,
you know, we, we got back late. We're in, I
think it was shooting you back to school till after 3. But,
you know, not a lot of time to rest this
weekend as we had to prepare for a good Colquitt
team coming off two victories back to back. You know,

(11:33):
they had a tough loss to TCC to open the season, but,
You know, TCC got on with some big plays early, and,
of course, they've got an exceptional team, but Coltwood's gotten
better each week, and they've got a really good football team,
as always. You know, Coach Calhoun does a phenomenal job there.
He's got a great staff. They've got good players on
that team, as always. Football matters a lot in that community.
Their kids play hard, and we have to go there,

(11:55):
which is one of the great atmospheres, MacThorpe Stadium in
the state of Georgia, maybe in the country for high.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
School football, I'm sure.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
We're close by South Georgia standards, about an hour away
from each other. So I'm sure just like the last
time we went over there, we'll have a huge crowd
of our people at the game and great fan support.
And what great fan support we had up at Sequoia.
It was phenomenal to see how many elite fans made
that trip up there to watch the game. I'm sure
we'll have a big contingent of elite fans at Colport County,

(12:23):
and we're going to need them there to offset that
home field advantage that they have.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Boy, they really do.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
You know, I have had so many head coaches say,
who have told me, you know, when I ask them, Coach,
what is the toughest venue to play in? And to
a man, almost every one of them will say Mac
Tharp Stadium, the hog pen. And I think it's for
a lot of different reasons. As you said, they've got
very passionate fans. But, you know, the venue, obviously, it

(12:49):
sits right on top of the players and the coach,
especially that short sideline.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
Isn't that right, Coach?

Speaker 5 (12:55):
Yeah, you know, and I wish they'd do something about
that sideline. It's really unsafe.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
Um, you know, and they, they, if you notice, they
took a few rows out there on the home sideline
and you got a little bit more room, but that
visitor sideline really is not a safe situation there. I
really wish they would, they would do something there to,
to move that fence back and give you a little
bit more room. Cause it's just, it's just, like I said,
it's just not safe over there, but that is what
it is. And, you know, I think the biggest reason

(13:19):
is they've had really good teams over the years and
that's why.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
It's tough to play there. It's just, it's, it's such
good teams that they have, um, That's the biggest thing. Yes,
it's a tough venue. Yeah, they have a great fan base,
and it is very compact.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
But I think the biggest thing is they've had good
players and good coaches.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
And, you know, anytime you're taking on a Colquitt County team,
you know, Sean Calhoun coached a team, you know, you're
going to get a physical team. You're going to get
a team that is sound and fundamental. So you can't
really count on them to beat themselves, I guess is
what I'm saying.

Speaker 4 (13:53):
Oh, definitely not. You know, when we were fortunate, we
went over there in 2024 and got a win. You know,
we played over there many times. So it's, it's not
going to be quite the shock it is, as it
is the first time you went over there. You know,
I think the first time I played there in my
tenure was 2014. So we've been there several times and
you know, we know what we're up against and they,
and it's going to be an exciting game and just

(14:13):
a great atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Coach is no secret.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
You know, Corwin Lawson course came from there and he's been,
you know, he's worked down as your quarterback.

Speaker 2 (14:21):
I'll tell you, The young man, I think, has maybe
surprised some people.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
It hasn't surprised me, but he's doing a phenomenal job
for you since taking over as quarterback.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
He's playing.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
We've still kind of used a two-quarterback system with Jordan
Bush playing, but he's taking more and more of the
reps each week.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
Like I said, last game was his best game. I
think it was 24-35.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
For 255 yards, two touchdowns, or 377 yards and two touchdowns.

Speaker 5 (14:45):
He had a great game for us, and he's getting
better each week.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah, absolutely. Well, Coach, it's going to be a big one.
I told you I had a little secret here for you,
so we're.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Going to display.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
It's going to be the Packers and the Lee County Trojans.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Look at that. Look at that.

Speaker 4 (15:02):
Look at that.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, man, we had that on display last night.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Thanks to, you know, obviously you for giving me the
Lee County helmet and for Sean Calhoun providing the the
Coquitlam County helmet it's going to be a great game
I know I don't have to say anything else to
the fans about making the trip over there and I
was pleasantly surprised to hear what you had to say
about all the fans making it to Sequoia because that
is a.

Speaker 4 (15:25):
Long trip long trip of course they had a huge
crowd on their part you know I got kind of
told our kids it's really kind of the opposite last
week Miami Carroll City had to come and take the
long trip to play us and you know they were
billed as a.

Speaker 5 (15:37):
Highly ranked nationally ranked team and it kind of flipped.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
Now we were the ones with the bullseye on our
chest and making the long trip as a nationally ranked team. So, uh,
you know, we, we, in an adverse situation versus a
really good football team on the road, we, we came
out with a win and, you know, a lot of
people have asked, well, what's wrong, what happened this week?
But the thing is, that's a, I tell them nothing happened.
We played a really good team. We didn't play very
well in the first half. Now, a lot of that

(16:00):
credit goes to Sequoia for taking nothing away there. Um,
And and take, you know, excuses with the being a
long road trip. That's something, you know, we may have
to do in the playoffs. And that's one of the
reasons we scheduled this game was to kind of get
that experience of that. Nobody else would play. So we
kind of have to take whoever will agree to play us.
So this was a big win for us over a

(16:23):
really good football team on the road and in an
adverse situation. And we overcame, like I said, a big
a big 78 year run being called back. Like I said,
a short missed field goal several times, stubbing our toe
after moving the ball. And we had to overcome some
miscues on defense in the first half and settle down
and get those corrections. And the kids did a great

(16:44):
job of that. But when you have a veteran team,
that's one of the things you're.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
Able to do.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
We're finishing up with Dean Fabrizio, our weekly Lee County
Coaches Show, again brought to you by Phoebe Orthopedics and
Sports Medicine.

Speaker 2 (16:57):
Coach, you know, no matter what happens, I mean– You.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Guys have got to be applauded for the schedule that
you played. I know you mentioned you really had to
work because you had some teams that didn't want to play. Again,
that's a testament, though, to how good you brought this
program along. But I think in the end, you know,
playing these really solid teams can only make you guys
better in what isn't already what I think is the

(17:22):
toughest overall classification in the state and probably the toughest region.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
In the state as well. I'll give you the final
word to kind of comment on that.

Speaker 5 (17:32):
There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
And I really hope this, this level of competition helps
us and it forces us to get better because if
you have a weakness, it's going to get exposed. And,
you know, we've had to make adjustments each week that
maybe had we not played the level of competition, we
might've get a false sense of security, but we've had
to make adjustments. It's a, we've got to do a
good job for our kids, take care of their bodies
and rehabbing and doing those types of things. Cause of their,

(17:53):
these are physical games each week that our kids are
having to play the whole, you know, 48 minutes. So
it's something that's, that I think is going to help
us in the long run. And, and, you know, we,
you know, our community likes exciting games. Our team likes
to be part of exciting games. And I think that
the other aspect is the recruiting aspect. When you play,
you know, every week we've got.

Speaker 5 (18:13):
A chance to showcase ourselves, our players do versus high level.
And there's no.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
Doubt with, with the exposure these games are getting and
putting on film things versus these teams, it definitely helps
our players get recruited. And I think that's another factor
in these things. You know, I've heard several people say, well,
if he was at a bigger school, he would get recruited.
If we did well, I mean, the thing is when you,
when you schedule really good people, you get to showcase that. So,
you know, I think you do your kids a little
bit of a disservice when you don't schedule hard teams.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Absolutely coach.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
And I promise you, it is not turd. I mean,
every time we turn around, you know, we're seeing a
graphic announcing another Lee County Trojan and you know, visiting
a school, announcing a commitment to a school. So, no,
it has done nothing but help. And, Coach, you've really
done a great job in that regard.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
You really have.

Speaker 4 (19:03):
You know, we had a lot of kids playing Saturday.
You know, Chauncey Magwood scores a touchdown for Purdue. You know,
a great player here. Baron Hobson, the preseason conference.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Player of the year for Kennesaw State.

Speaker 5 (19:17):
Great player.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Jeremiah McLeod had a start for Florida. At Georgia Southern
and Charleston Southern, you know, we had Bill Richardson starts
at guard for Charleston Southern. Cason Hook starts at corner
for Charleston Southern. And, of course, we had Weston Bryant
scoring a touchdown for Georgia Southern. Devin Collier, Tamiris Williams
all getting a lot of playing time on the defensive

(19:39):
side for Georgia Southern. So you've got a bunch of
league kids in that game playing against each other. Tyrus
Washington up there Notre Dame, playing a lot, tight end, was.

Speaker 5 (19:47):
Really a key member of their team.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
Um, like I said, Jeremiah cloud last year, earlier got
the start for Florida.

Speaker 5 (19:53):
Who's mine? Chroma. Um, you know, probably why I look
a little tired today.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
Cause you know, the, the, the game didn't start till late,
the Florida state game last night, but he, uh, he
had an exceptional game, a hundred plus yards, rushings, touchdowns.

Speaker 5 (20:05):
And so we, and, and I, I can go on
and on. We've got a lot of kids playing college
football right now.

Speaker 4 (20:09):
And it's neat to watch, you know, I never got
into fantasy football, but I can kind of imagine this
much what it must be like. Cause it's kind of
when I, when I get a chance to relax on
Saturday after, you know, Duke preparing for the opponent that
morning it's kind of I just kind of flip around
and see which games our kids are playing in and.

Speaker 6 (20:25):
Kind of try to watch them and cheer them on
absolutely and you're right you just named but a few
of the other great Lee counties that are playing collegially
on Saturday aside Jackson uh you know they've been some
injuries here at Stanford so he he's there in the
secondary tough tough thing having to guard Malachi Tony in
your first college start but he uh uh besides there's

(20:45):
a true freshman and he played a ton for Stanford
this is against Miami so And there's several others, too.
I don't have time, and I'm leaving some out. But
really proud of those guys.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
Yeah, you've done a great job of developing these players, Coach.
Well done.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
And, again, continuing to develop quite a few of.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
Them this year.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
And all those great players, actually from both sides, are
going to be on display. This is going to be
a good one. I'm sure this will be, again, one
of the most anticipated and talked-about games of the week.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
It's Lee County going to Colquitt County. Going to be
a big one. Coach, we want to wish you the
best of luck.

Speaker 5 (21:20):
Thank you and appreciate all you do to promote high
school football.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
Thanks for that, Coach. See you next week.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
All right, Dean Fabrizio checking in with us again. Big
thanks to Phoebe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for sponsoring our
weekly talk with Coach Dean Fabrizio. Be sure to join
