Speaker 1 (00:05):
Live across the Great Lake State. You're connected to Michigan's
most engaging and influential radio and television program, Michigan's Big
Show starring Michael Patrick Shields, presented by Blue Cross, Blue
Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network. I'm producer and
creative director Tony Cuthberts now in the shadow of the
Capitol Dome and Lansing. He's heard from the beaches of
(00:28):
Lake Michigan, to the halls of power and behind closed doors.
Here's Michigan's Michael Patrick Shields.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
I would say I am exactly like a ship carrying
a cargo that will never reach any port. As long
as I'm alive, that ship will always be at sea,
so to speak. Yes, an arabado, never a night in
the same place Michael Patrick Shields is on the air.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Good Morning World.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Not exactly, but that's not far off. Michael Patrick Shields.
You could read my travel writing every other Sunday in
the Lansing State Journal, Gannet newspapers part of the USA
Today Network, and Yahoo News and at LSJ dot com.
Go Worldtravel dot com too. If you're doing some dreaming
this weekend of travel for the holidays or the New
Year and Traveltatler dot Org as well, And I've written
(01:18):
for Forbes and lots of other publications. And we talk
travel on this program, and we're talking about all the
Thanksgiving traditions. You might be traveling to ann Arbor for
a game this weekend against the Buckeyes. You might be
traveling for Detroit to see the Spartans play downtown on
Saturday night. You might be going over the river and
through the woods to grandmother's house. Who could forget maybe
(01:40):
one of the most significant Thanksgiving movies of all time, Planes,
Trains and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin. During
holiday travelers, some people get Delirich Day.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Some get Day, and some get.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Dill Griffin American Light fixture of Director of Sales Shower
curtain Ering Division.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Neil Page got all three.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I was on my way home spend a nice holiday
with my family. Instead, I'm in a motel bud with
a stranger. So instead of Thanksgiving with his family, he's
spending three days.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
With the turkey.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Nicole Noel Williams remembers that movie and she hopes that
your travels this weekend are a little less dramatic.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Don't we yes, we do great to be with you
this morning.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Thank you the President and CEO Capital Region International Airport,
Fly Lansing dot com. And this is, as I understand it,
even though Christmas is still to come, the busiest travel
days of the year, this very weekend.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
It is, yes, and so folks traveling today and tomorrow
and then Sunday. Sunday is like the ultimate day of
of travel when we wrap up the Thanksgiving as everybody's
on airplanes. But yes, today and tomorrow it's kind of
spread out where we'll have full flights going out for
folks going to visit family and friends, but also those
(03:14):
coming in will have a lot of Greeter's curb side
picking up family and friends. So make sure you keep
aware of other folks around you and your surroundings. And
we look forward to greeting everybody back here in their
hometown here Atlanting.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I know that you've flown in and out of Los
Angeles a bit because you have family there. But I
can remember Thanksgiving. I think it was a couple of
years ago. I was driving my son to the airport
and it was a night flight and he had to
get out of the car on sepulvida and run up
the embankment into the yeah, because you couldn't get a
(03:52):
car in that place. I mean for miles it was
red lights. That's not going to happen at Lansing Airport.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
US get wrapped up all the way around the front
of the terminal. And even last night I left late
from the office and a flight came in and it
was two cars deep, a lot of people picking up
family and friends. So keep in mind the short term
parking lot is stone throw away, inexpensive parking first few
minutes there are of course for free. So if our
(04:22):
greeting loved ones don't hesitate, just to pull in and
park in the short term parking lot, pick up your
family and friends and make maybe a little bit easier
for folks that are dropping off and getting picked up.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
I always feel like, you know, we all have a
little bit of a responsibility when it comes to making
the travel experience smoother. Are there things we can do
to be good travelers and good skates?
Speaker 4 (04:45):
You know what I mean? Definitely, I think first and foremost,
when this time of the year there's a little bit
less of maybe business traveling, and there's a lot more
family traveling and those that maybe travel just once a year,
and so keep in mind of patients of those around you.
Show up to the airports early, make sure you're there
ninety minutes ahead of time before your departure, and then
(05:07):
keep in mind over this past year, the regulations have
changed with airlines requiring you to get your bags checked
in forty five minutes before the departure time, and there's
not flexibility with that. So if you're traveling and you've
got your luggage, make sure you're there at least forty
five minutes in advance, get your bags checked, and then
also think about when you're going through security, that three
(05:29):
one one rule still qualify, so your liquids and gels
need to be put in a ziplock baggy. And then
if you're traveling with gifts, hold off on wrapping those gifts.
What I've done in the past is I wrap the
gift and leave one end open, so that way, if
TSA does need to inspect the item that's inside, you're
not having to open up an unwrap a gift totally.
(05:51):
So keep that in mind. And of course, as I mentioned,
show up early and pack your patients because there could
be some delays along the way with weather that's hitten
throughout the country and it's it's planes being impacted from
one location to the next. So just keep that in
mind as you're thinking of traveling here over the next
few days.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
What is the three to one one rule?
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Oh, it's putting your liquids and gels in a zip
block baggie a three ounce size containers of any of
those liquids and gels. And you can only have one
zip black baggye per person, So it depends on TSA.
Sometimes they are going to require you to take out
the bag. Majority of the time, what I've seen traveling
is just I leave it in my bag and it's
(06:36):
combined and it's collected together. So that way it's easier
for the TSA agent's fuel to screen the.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Packages three ounce bottles or less. And I wonder, I
always wonder about someone's sort of travel profile, if you will.
Are they the type who like to shirp of bags
all through the airport and try to fit them in
the overhead so that they don't have to check one?
Or do they check bags and walk on fettered and
a comfortable fashion through the airport and no hurry to
(07:04):
get on the flight because they're not worried about overhead space.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Yeah, you know, I personally, I used to carry on
everything my suitcase and I now check a bag. I
check a bag traditionally everywhere I go, unless it's just
a one night stay somewhere, and it is just so
much easier and smoother and a lot less of a
challenge when you're trying to board a plane, and you're
(07:29):
going to see a lot of that as you come
into the holiday season. Folks are going to try to
carry on as much as they can and it will
become a challenge. So keeping in mind of respect to
others when you're boarding the aircraft, of keeping your items
within the space that you have a seat and underneath
the seat in front of you to accommodate for those
larger bags that need to go above your head.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
You and I are lucky because we travel frequently, so
we don't have to pay usually for checked bags because
of the vibe travel that we do. But some people
do and they're trying to avoid that. I don't know
what the policies are for Delta or American or Breeze
airways in terms of, you know, paying for bags. I
think it's it's quite very depending on what kind of
(08:09):
traveler you are. But one thing's for sure is it's
very easy to check a bag at Lancing because the
lines aren't typically long, and the getting your bag from
either the drop off at the sidewalk or even the
parking lot is not very far.
Speaker 4 (08:24):
That's right, that's right. And you know as you look
at getting checked in, whether it's domestic or international, those
all factors play a role. So make sure you visit
the airlines websites for further details and information. We have
links to all the carriers' websites right from fly lancing

Breeze right around the corner with Orlando and Fort Myers
