Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars. Splash Page Comics in review This.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
This episode number four hundred and seventy five amazing. Hi Jeff,
how are you.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
All stage? I'm hum gonna as befall park On. I
don't want sets running the gust scenes time man. Maybe

(00:35):
at five hundreds will do something special?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
What do you say?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Maybe?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Maybe maybe you think about it. We'll give our listeners
specie listeners and not a sport that.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Well.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
That reminds me. I had a I was I promise
you before we recorded last week, but I had a
story from my visit to the theater to see Frankenstein
last week and I completely forgot. So you know how
I'm always making the joke. I always talk about how
one of my favorite jokes in any movie ever is
in the movie Airheads, when they're making their list of
demands and he says, okay, you said three copies of movie, Dick,

(01:10):
did you want the book of the movie, and Steve
Busimmey's character says, they made a book out of that.
I'm standing outside the theater waiting on Pam after we
finished Frankenstein and there's a couple there talking to someone
else who is obviously a literary person who knows the
novel inside it out, and they were both the two
the couple were talking about how much they enjoyed it
and everything, and the younger person they were talking to

(01:33):
said yeah, and it followed the book pretty closely, and
the wife goes, oh, it's a book. It's time to
go to the library.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
They did not.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
They did. I wish that someone else had been there
to hear it besides me, And I'm glad it wasn't
me that they were talking to, because I would have
laughed and said, oh, you're serious.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Sorry.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
So yes, she basically said, the book out of that
and another movie talk and then we'll get to the comics,
I promise, folks. I am off work this week and
we went today to see Sinners in They're they're showing
it again in seventy millimeters imax. So we saw a
seventy millimeter film print of Sinners in Imax, and it

(02:19):
was worth the twenty five dollars a ticket that we
paid to go see it again. Even though we've seen
it now three times in the theater and two or
three times at home, it remains, for my money, the
film of the year and honestly one of the best
movies I've ever seen. And if you have a chance
to see it in seventy millimeter Imax out there, folks,
go do it. Do yourself a favor.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
I'm gonna have to try and do that this week
for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Yeah it is. It is worth the effort.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Cool, and we're probably.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Gonna go see Back to the Future in Imax tomorrow
or Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
That's awesome. And I noticed that that was played this week.
That's cool that they brought it back, because you know, then,
what's been really cool is you. I've been overhearing people say, yeah,
I've never seen it in the theater, so I'm really
looking forward to that. Well, that's that's cool. You're really
going to enjoy it. I have fond memories of going
to see it with friends of mine when it came
out at a theater in Huntington, West Virginia.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
So I've talked about this before. Back to the Future
is kind of almost a perfect movie because as you age,
I don't know if this is true for you, but
it's been true for me. Is as I age, I
appreciate it for different reasons.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Oh yeah, it remains Also, I also think it's one
of those. It's a loadstone film from the nineteen eighties. Yes,
you know, it's just it is a cultural load sense.
It's you know, it's Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Goonies,
you know, the Breakfast Club e t h you know,
Raiders of the Lost Art. So yeah, it's just you know,

(03:40):
it's just one of those. Wow. So it's also really
a trilogy, you know, I got a bet.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
So it is. It's it's, it's it's it's one of
the stronger trilogies that we have. But as always, the
second and third ones are are good, where the first
one is just sublime.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
And I do I do, I kind of do wish
maybe they'll do for the fiftieth anniversary that they'll release
the the Eric Stultz cut.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
Well they didn't fill the only film like six weeks.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, but just still, you know, just you know, basically
kind of you know, put it, you know, put it
together with the scenes with him, so because I mean,
we would have gotten a dramatically different character take.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
But yes, we would have. There's another podcast called What
Went Wrong. I may have I may have mentioned on
the show before, but it's a it's it's a couple
that they just do deep dives on movies and there's
always trivia in them that I don't know which is
I can say this without being being arrogant. It's just
the truth. Uh. It's odd for me if it's a

(04:39):
movie that I love, like Back to the Future, Ghostbusters,
things like that, to learn something new about it is
something special. And they always teach me something new in
their episode about it is pretty eye opening, especially when
they were talking about Eric Stults. But this is a
comic show, folks. We do have one book to discuss
this week, Legacy of Vader, issue number ten. But before

(05:01):
that map we have any news to speak of.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
You know, actually we have very scant news. The big
news comes from a a skeet. I guess that's that's
what they call it him Blue Sky, right. I just
always call it a post Charles Soul just you know,
on November two, you know, this past Sunday, just kind
of casually casually posted, just sitting here in Adelaide, Australia,

(05:27):
working on a story, more specifically, trying to figure out
how the hell Kylo Rent acts when he's happy. So
and of course you know that flies everyone sees it,
you know, it's on the Star Wars Comics sub reddit.
So now everyone like this means we're getting a sequel
to the Legacy of Aader. Oh my god, Oh my god.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
You know.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Who knows? You know, he might be writing a Kylo
Rent novel. You never know, but you know I will
say this, you know, given given them what we just
had in the last couple of weeks with the Hunt
for Ben Solo movie, which I would have seen on
opening night like three times. I cannot lie, but you know,

(06:10):
it would make a lot of sense, you know, for
when when the Legacy Evader ends with number twelve, that
you know they'll bring it back around for another probably
twelve issue maxi series, but you know, maybe you know,
with a different title, but you know, still leading up
to the Rise of Skywalker. So you know, who knows,
We'll say, we'll find out. But so that was pretty cool.
And then other than that, we have a release date

(06:31):
for the Hyperspace Stories the Bad Batch Ghost Agents trade
paperback and that's coming up or not ghost Agent, excuse me,
Rogue Agents. I Abolish Rogue Agents, and that's going to
be coming out to July twenty eighth, at least as
of right now right, it can always change, so but

(06:55):
you know who knows, We'll say, And that's pretty much
it for news.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
All right. Well that was that was short and sweet,
So we'll take a quick break. We'll be back to
discuss Legacy of Vader issue number ten. That's not a
good idea, all right. So when we first start. When
I first looked at this book, Matt Legacy Evader issue
number ten, I thought, Wow, who's this hottie they've got

(07:20):
on the cover, And I realized, Oh, that's Kylo Wren.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
So dreamy, this could definitely be a cover.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
It is the hair and everything, it's the bone structure
does not look like Adam Driver. The eyes do not
look like Adam Driver's eyes, but it looks like Kyler
re and once I figured out that's what it was,
but it is. He does strike a very pretty picture.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Very much so, of course. And it's the Derek two cover,
and Derek has been handling all of the main covers
for this twelve issue maxi series. So we are the
Reign of Kylo Wrinn Part ten, written by Charles Soul.
The artist, of course is Luke Ross. The color artist
is Nolan Woodard. Letters of My Verse calligraphies. Joe Karamania,
as I said, Derek True is the cover artist. From

(08:04):
the main cover. They are variants. There's three of them.
There's one by Bengal it's a Jedi Knights variant. There's
one by Jose Maria casanoas and then there is another
one by Luke Ross and Alex Sinclair. Carlos Law is
the book designer. Mikey J. Basso is the assistant editor.
Mark Paninzia is the editor. The editor in chief for
Marvel that's C. B. Sebulski, and for Lucasfilm we have

(08:26):
now editor Grace Aris, Senior editor Robert Simpson, creative director
Michael Sigline, art director Troy Alders. From the story group,
we have Pablo Hidalgo, Matt Martin and MH. Kokhani, and
then of course we have creative art manager your friend
and mine, Phil Shostack. So, if this is your first

(08:49):
time listening to us, and you are not familiar with
the Legacy of Vader, go through the show listings and
do a search for Legacy of Vader number one and
start there. For those of you who have been listening
since day one, we thank you for your sacrifice and
for those of you who have been reading Legacy of

(09:10):
Vader since issue one, you know what's going on. Uh,
Kylo Wrenn is trying to get to the root of
the legacy of Vader and he uh, you know, has
buddied up and I used buddy up very pejoratively with
Vanner from Vader's castle on Mustafar, and Vonnier has sort

(09:32):
of sent them on this, if you will, a scavenger
hunt around the galaxy, and Kylo ren unfortunately is no
closer to finding the solace, if that's what it can
be called that he is seeking. And so he has
returned to Mustafar to fortress Vader. Uh. And you know

(09:53):
it's it opens up and it's just basically like something
out of a Universal Pictures Frankenstein adaptation with lightning going
off in the background, the lava flowing. Uh, and just look,
Skywalker is dead, but he has not gone like can
sense him watching me.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
There's okay, the way I wanted to a Polish real quick.
The way this is drawn. There's a cliff like an
outcropping coming up there, and I kept looking and expecting
to see like a lion sculpture there or something like
outside the New York Public Library. I don't know why,
but that's what I expected there.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
It's very cinematic, the way, the way, the way that
you know that, the way that Luke and Nolan never
have handled this. So and I'm not complaining, no, no,
And it turns out, you know, you know, Kylo Ren
is back on most of far having having let Tava
Ren go last issue, much to the Sugarn and just
befunnement of hawks Uh, and you know he's you know,

(10:49):
it's almost like Kylo is delivering a soliloquy and in
the background is Vonne, you know, is robo Mecha Vgne
not Now, whatever it is left of Skywalker probably hates
this place, but other times, other places he is there.
I do not fear him, but I want him gone.
Skywalkers do a reckoning. I would have him appear before me.
Tell me, Vanye, how would Darth Vader have accomplished this

(11:12):
technique's tools? What would he have used? Kylo Wrinn, my prince,
I am ashamed to admit that I do not know.
I kept Lord Lord Vader's castle clean, cad for his needs.
I was not privy to his deepest secrets. And Kylo
is just as he's saying that, you know, we see
him from behind with light year, with you know, static
lightning crackling in the sky in front of him. It

(11:35):
is interesting to me, Vonne, that sometimes you know all
there is to know about Darth Vader, and yet other
times you profess to be an ignorant, innocent servant, a simpleton,
a weary of you threatening, a weary of threatening you
be of use to me or die. And that he turns,
you know, and chat you with half his face and shadow.
You told me Vader kept his true power lucked away

(11:57):
in this fortress, inside a vault, show me. And so
that's what he does.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
This next page. Yeah, this next page page is digital
page five.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
It's very trippy.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
It's it's great. This is my favorite page in the
whole book, and one of my favorite pages I've seen
in a long time, maybe this whole year.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Oh yeah, because it perfectly summarizes what Kyler rend is
going through. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
So he basically says that he takes him to this
this very dark looks like a very dark hallway, says,
the door at the end of the tunnel a lot.
And Vonnie says, only this I've never entered Lord Vader's vault.
I cannot, but you're a Vader's blood pet line and
you walk his path, so perhaps, and he just says enough,
And the page is a swirl with this black blackness

(12:42):
at the center and it's swirling out and we see
Kylo walking through the swirls. He says, do not need
your help. I'll find what I need on my own
and comes back out where he started and he looks
at Vanni and he says, you think this is a game.
That throws him against the wall and cracks his his
aquarium had and and Vannie tells him, you know who

(13:05):
The decision hasne up to me? Who enters? I have
another way for you to obtain what you seek. There
is another way, he says, Please let me serve you.
I can serve you well. I swear it, please, And
he takes him to Darth Vader's meditation chamber and he
sits down. Kyloses down. He says, yes, there's power here,
and Foni says this the Dark Lord been enter this
space when he required clarity. It's been hours inside, sometimes days,

(13:26):
which doesn't surprise me. No, perhaps you too will find
the answers you seek. And so Kylo goes in there says, grandfather,
bring him to me, bring me Skywalker, and he when
he opens his eyes, he's in a swamp of some
sort up to his waist.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Yeah, kind of, you know, kind of, you know, I
think it's maybe it's supposed to evoke Dagoba in a sense,
you know, not not obviously directly, but you know, it
just it's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Yes, And he's also chained because when he finally makes
his way out onto this little outcropping out of the water,
he finds that he's got chained, but they're not really
chained means there's it's a spine, and a series of
spines pop out of the water with different faces. You
see Chebacca, Lea looks like Lando maybe uh Snoke, Vader Snoke.

(14:14):
And there's one other character that I can't place.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
Uh it's I'm I'm kind of wondering one of them.
Maybe it looks like, uh like.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Hucks maybe so, Yeah, one is Hucks. And there's one
that has like a braid going down in the middle
of the of the hair.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
Yeah, that's that's that's Yeah, that's gonna be really obvious
when you know, when somebody points it out. But I,
you know, I can't figure out who that is.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
But yeah, same here, and so they're all just basically
saying different one word to him, a killer's son, treacherous, betrayer, monstrous, disappointment,
And of course he yells no, gets and they and
he tries to run away and they they wrap themselves
around him, and uh, basically tackle him, and he gets
out his saber and I guess, is it Luke's saber

(14:58):
that he has? I can't remember. It looks like I
think it is.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
And he starts unless it's supposed to be raised, but
how yellow wouldn't be raised? No, that it would definitely
be Luke's.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Yeah, Luke's or les, Yeah, I believe it's Luke's. And
he starts slicing them, you know, in two and then
they keep coming back up lost little boy and uh,
and he finally just realized he's not here. Skywalker isn't here,
This isn't where he would be.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Yeah. Is these little creatures sort of remind me of
there's a creature in classic Creature in Dungeons and Dragon
called a bone naga. That's kind of what these kind
of remind me of.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Oh, it sounds exactly yeah, yeah, I think you're probably
onto something. There got a bunch of dirts writing these books, huh.
And he says find him, find the Warrior, the Seeker,
Luke Skywalker, the Inspiration, the teacher, and we see all
these sort of pinkish hued images of of Luke and

(15:56):
his adventures throughout his life.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
Yeah, which is kind of cool because you know, this
is you know, and we also see you know, some
stuff you know with Kylo and Luke, you know, while
Kylo's in training as a as a as a Jedi
padawan fighting droids, uh. And it's a great two page spread,
you know, we also see Luke, uh, you know, teaching
the other ones that we saw from of course the
Rise of Kylo read mini series.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
So right, yeah, exactly. And he says the Jedi and
then he says my enemy. And then all of a
sudden he's at this very serene looking spot with all
of these I just realized Tron Legacy and they look
like the ISOs from the end of Tron Legacy. So
these glowing figures, I'm assuming they're all Force. Go says,
how have you come the dark? Yeah, and he says

(16:43):
get out of my way, and I said, this place
will not allow that. You should not have been able
to come here. You should not be here. And a
voice comes this says no, we shouldn't.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
And then and then and next to him. You know,
we can see it looks like we can see we
see Yoda. It looks like there's the outline of Obi
Wan can be behind.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Luke and maybe Qui Gon or somebody. Yeah, off to
the side. Maybe it's supposed to be Anakin.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (17:06):
I don't know if it's that.

Speaker 2 (17:07):
It might be Anakin, but uh, but it's Luke.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
You's saying no, we shouldn't, but he is here all
the same.

Speaker 2 (17:14):
Skywalker and yeah, and Lucas become corporeal, and it looks
to the other forest ghosts. Thank you. I will attend
to this one. Be wary. His pain is extraordinary. It screams,
and you know, the ghost fades out. You just kind of,
you know, wisps away and Lucas. So you missed me

(17:35):
that much? Eh? Why are you here? Because you're dead?
I wish i'd done it. I could have. I would have,
but you escaped me. Who did it? I want to
find them, hear the story, make them tell me how
you suffered, and Lucas just no one killed me. I
sacrificed my life for others and services something greater. I

(17:57):
died for my friends and family and for people well
I don't know, all across the galaxy, so they could
live in peace and light. That's what my life was for.
What is your life for? And of course then you know,
impetuous Kylo, stop trying to teach me. I hate you,
Uncle Luke. And then Luke looks behind he goes, I

(18:18):
come from a long line of teachers, a hard instinct
to break. But you're right. I suppose that time is
over for us, but not for her. Why her? She
wanted to learn? I hate you. Stop your lurking, stop
your watching. I can sense it. And as he says,
you know this, and this is a great panel that
Luke and no would have done, because you know, Kylo

(18:40):
is just basically pointing at you. I am no longer
your student, no longer anything to you. You failed to
make me into you. You lost. Leave me alone, you
dead old man. I will find a way.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
To destroy you. It's so yeah. To stop teaching me.
Parts is is what killed me. Stop trying to teach me.
He is such a child he is.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
And then you turned the page and there's Luke with
such just you know, just a serene grin on you know,
not even a grin, just it's almost like a serene smirk.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, but it's a smirk.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
He's just you can't destroy me without destroying the force,
and you can't do that without destroying yourself. But goals
are important, Luke, it's meaningful that you found your way here.
You should ask yourself how you managed it. And you know,
Luke starts just to walk away and then sort of
fade away. Kylo redd means nothing to me, but I'll

(19:36):
always be there for Ben.

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Great great little like knife turn, knife twist it is.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
And then you know, then Kylo is back on the
swamp world again, you know, and then.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
Looking for where too, looks like the light has been
drained out of him.

Speaker 2 (19:53):
There's a Kylo red and he turns and you know
sort of this. You know this, So you tried to
flee your destiny to return to the light. You tried
to forget your pain. You must be reminded. And then
just you know, we cut to the exterior of the

(20:18):
meditation chamber. It starts to open and there's there's vigne. Huh.
And then we see Kylo's hand grip the side. Oh,
and you know there's blood all over the place. Nice
job keeping it clean, Kilo and his garments are rent
and and Vanie. You know, it's a mighty battle. I'm

(20:43):
sure you made your grandfather proud. I hope you found
the answers you saw as he's saying this, you know,
he's he's prepping Kylo for rejuvenation, you know, and healing.
But let us put that aside for now. Focus on
yourself on healing quick, you know, throws a switch. Everything
will be all right now, and we Seelo in the
back to the tank, and it's a very evocative scene
because you know we've seen this, you know, especially like

(21:04):
you know in Rogue one where we saw Anakin in
the back of the tank, you know, yeah, you know.
And then and then we see, you know, we get
that final panel of everything will be all right now.
You're just where you need to be, and Kylo's eyes
are open and he's just staring out into the void
and we get it to be continued.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
He looks in that image, he looks like the imagery
that we saw in the Obi. The Obi wan Kenobi series. Yes, yes,
there as well, that's what it reminded me of.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Ye and I love I hope.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
We get this cover next month of the Vader's helmet
going down over Kylo's face.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Oh we are That cover has been solicited, so worry not,
you will get it.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Excellent. Yeah, this was this was a good one. One
thing that I was thinking about as I was reading
this is, you know, you know, I haven't read many
of the novels, but the comics, it seems like, is
the place to go for a real psychological discussion and
exploration of some of these characters, especially Vader and rend

(22:08):
the Sith especially. Well, but have we gotten this much?

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Books are also really detailed as well.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
That's what I was gonna ask. Have we gotten this
sort of psychological discussion in the books as well?

Speaker 2 (22:19):
You know, I can't say to any deep except but
I have also not yet read Adam Christopher's new novel
which is all about Darth Vader, so you know, and
and apparently it's just you know, it's already I was
like number four on the New York Times bestseller list,
so so I'm definitely have to check that out.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
Yeah, definitely, I've.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
Got, I've got I've got it on request from my library,
my local library. So excellent.

Speaker 1 (22:44):
All right, Well again that's the review for this week, Matt.
What have we got to look forward to for next week?

Speaker 2 (22:49):
We have three actually techicalarly, there's four books next week,
but we're only going to look at three of them.
We get Star Wars number seven, han Solo Hunt for
the Falcon number three of five from dark Horse. We
get Hyperspace Stories Tithes of Terror number three of four,
and then Viz Media will have the Path of the
Lightsaber uh manga, which is uh, you know, a sequel

(23:10):
trilogy era set book. Oh cool. I don't think we're
gonna break that one down, so I am gonna I
am gonna buy it, don't read it for sure, So
because we've got a nice preview of it, I'm on
the Facebook page on the Blue Sky feed.

Speaker 1 (23:23):
All right, excellent, Okay, Well that will do it for
this this this edition of Star Wars splash page. Although
I do have another recommendation of the movie recommendation, Matt,
I think I sent you a link to this, the
w n UF Halloween special.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Yeah, yeah, that looks interesting.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
There's a sequel I got both of them from Walmart
dot com on Blu Ray two out there Halloween Special
the WNUF. The first one is set in nineteen eighty seven,
the second one is set in nineteen ninety six, and
they're both perfect. What it is, folks, and you you
can find the wnuf's Halloween Special streaming and I believe
shutter but you may end up having to fork over

(24:00):
some money to get them physically. But what it is
is it's sort of a blair Witch type found footage thing,
and it's set up to look like you've got a
bootleg VHS tape because there are commercials on it, some
from the era and some that they've created themselves to
look like they're from the era, and it once in
a while it'll start fast forwarding through whatever you're watching
to get to the good part of it, which is

(24:22):
used to great comedic effect. And the first part of
it is a newscast and the second part of it
is a live report from a colleague of the news
desk going into this house, and things go very blair
witch ish, very witty, very funny, and some genuine scares
here and there as well. But for people of a

(24:44):
certain age like you and me, Matt, it is nostalgic
catnip and it's worth tracking down the WNUF Halloween special.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
I will definitely have to check that out, and with.

Speaker 1 (24:57):
That, I will give you a keus and we'll be
back to discussing those books and anything else that we
see between now and then. And so four Star Wars
splash page, I'm yeah, I'm Matt.

Speaker 3 (25:07):
Made the force we use always.
