Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars Splash Page Comics and Review.
This is episode number four hundred and seventy six, and
I am Matt. Jeff unfortunately is not here is shall
we say, under the weather uh and unable to record
this week, and we wish him very well in hope

(00:21):
that he recovers very soon. Jeff, you are missed, and
of course always in our thoughts, whether you're ill or healthy.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
So big stage as.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Parts running against scenes, We've got quite a selection of

(01:05):
books tonight for this week. From dark Horse we have
Hyperspace Stories Tides of tearor number three of four, and
from Marvel we have Star Wars number seven and han
Solo Hunt for the Falcon number three of five. So
seems to be a pretty pretty loaded week. Hey how

(01:26):
about that? But before we do anything, we will jump
to the news and we will lead off with a
couple of delays. From dark Horse. I will not editorialize here.
Tails in the Nightlands number three of three has been
delayed two weeks to December tenth, as has the first

(01:47):
issue of Hyperspace Stories, The Bad Batch Rogue Agents number
one of four, which is now due out December thirty first,
So for both books. That's a two week delay. It's
not demonstrably bad by any means, but nevertheless it is
a delay. Also, if you head over to the Facebook page,

(02:09):
the developer of the app, the Canteena Archive is now
adding the ability to track more than two thousand, three
hundred comics in that app, both the Legends and Canon.
It is coming soon. You can of course find it
on the App Store if you are an Apple user,

(02:30):
and of course the Google play Store if you are
an Android user. I have to admit I'm pretty intrigued
by that. You know, I don't have a whole lot
of books per se, and that's what you know, the
archive has been very good about is tracking Legends and
Canon books, and now that the fact that they're expanding into
comics is I think pretty cool. I myself use the

(02:55):
clz app to track all of my comics because it's
very easy to use, very intuitive. But I think it
might be willing to pay the three ninety nine one
time fee for the Canteena Archive just to, you know,
give you a chance to archive all of my comics
and books that are Star Wars related into one location.

(03:16):
Other than that, we do have a release date for
the art of Star Wars A New Hope the manga
volume two, which is by Hissao Tamaki and translated by
Michael Gombos. It will be due for a release on
August eighteenth, and it features a very nice cover of
Darth Vader with you know, a red background, so definitely,
you know, if you're into that and you didn't do
the kickstarter, it's definitely worth checking out. So with that,

(03:41):
we will take a short break and we will come
back to start the comics. Okay, first up from dark
Horse Comics to Star Wars Hyperspace Stories, number three of
four Tides of Terror. This, of course, is written by
George Mann, penciled by Luis morosch inked by Roman Lopez Cabrera,

(04:02):
colored by Michael Attia, lettered by Comic Crafts Tyler Smith
and Jimmy Baitencourt. The main cover is by Eduardo Mello
with Valentino Todeo. Dark Horse publisher is Mike Richardson. The
book's editor is Spencer Cushing, The assistant editor is Joe Cavanaugh,
The designer is Rebecca she digital art technician is aj Newle.
Pre Press is being handled by Jake Johnson, and from

(04:25):
Lucasfilm we have creative director Michael Siglane, Editor Grace Arris,
senior editor Robert Simpson, art director Troy Alders, creative art
manager Phil Shostack, and from the story group it's Matt Martin,
Pablo Hidalgo and Emily Spukhani. Issue number three is subtitled Sabotage,
and we open up on the Axial Research Station essentially

(04:46):
where we left it, with Kit Fisto and Nadar fleeing
some rather unsavory sharks with the massive Jaws. It's kind
of like a mix if you would take a a
megalodon and combine it with a Cela Cant with just
a measure of Bruce from the movie Jaws for a

(05:06):
good measure. In addition, interspersed among the sharks are lots
of tentacles. I'm a really large beastie that lives under
the water. And as they're running, you know, they find
themselves being you know, overwhelmed, you know, and thwacked at,
especially by the tentacles, you know, with you know, Kit
Fisto saying someone's feeling cranky, and you know, of course

(05:29):
you know his padawan, na Dar is like they're all
feeling cranky. So do we try to parlay with the monsters,
he asked Kit Fisto, Well, let's just try out to
get eating for a shall we just get that great smile?
As kit Fisto says it, I like that plan. And
as we see what's happening on the inside. Every now
and then we get a panel that shows the exterior
and shows the installation basically, you know, creek starting to collapse,

(05:54):
you know, because the weight of the water is dragging
the station down. And you know, over the course of
you know, three or four pages, we get this great
chase scene. Kit Fisto is slicing tentacles off of the Beastie,
Nadar is being grasped and grappled by another one, and
you know, approaching the caping ma and Kit is trying

(06:17):
his level best going remain calm. All would be well,
I'll be with you just as soon as I can,
you know, which is giving me real animal house vibes.
And with Kevin Bacon's character toward the end at the
homecoming parade, and Nadar is you know, as each panel progresses,
Nadar is getting hairilously closer into the sea creatures gaping
ma master patients Nadar and then boom, I've got you,

(06:42):
and Kit of course, slices off a tentacle runs with
it while it is still grasping Nadar as they try
to make it, you know, through one of the hallways
and the chambers, you know, to in a bid to
close basically the bulkheads to prevent the station and from sinking.
And uh, you know, the whole time, the little sea

(07:04):
months not little, but the big sea monster is is
giving chase and finally the door is shut, Nadar is safe.
Uh and the station, it seems for the moment, is stable,
but we will see. And then of course, you know,
Kit and the Dar get back to the crowd that's
left on the station. Those who are unable to evacuate

(07:24):
again get kind of real nice sims vibe here. You know,
they're all standing around, but you know they're they're told
that look, uh, you know, the the you know, the
the sea creatures which are are the sea monsters, which
is orphans are are circling and you know, it's it
doesn't seem likely that they're going to be able to

(07:45):
get themselves out of this, even though Nadar says that
masters went to and shock t will come back for us,
you know, they'll bring an evacuation barge. And uh but uh,
you know, Hope is sort of dying. And so we
cut to later and there's a Kit trying to deal
with all these little multiple fires that are popping out
from the circuit boards and everything and ah, and you know,

(08:08):
it looks like clearly it was sabotage, obviously, as we
saw the last issue. And Kit is confused by this. Well,
it looks like our mysterious saboteur has done a thorough
job here, doesn't it. What was the protest? What was
this the protesters? What were they hoping to achieve? And
Kit turns around and looks out, you know, the massive
glass wall, and ah, there's a very large sea creature.

(08:30):
Oh you're really quite beautiful, aren't you. Scuff show yourselves.
And Kit turns around and somebody shoots his lightsaber out
of his hand. It's time to go, Jedi, you've already
outstaged or welcome, And Kit's like, hmm, holds up a palm,
you know, brings his saber back to him. And it

(08:51):
turns out that Kit has done this on purpose in
a bid to lure them out, and so the three
start to run and you know, we cut to back
to the facility itself, where the DAR is trying to
you know, work with the with the crew going, you know,
we'll look, you know, how's it going, Maitland, you know,
how how's the you know, settling the station going? Is it?

(09:12):
Is it working? And he's like, well, not good. The
tilting is stabilized, but the engineering section is completely flooded
and whoever knocked me out did a thorough job. We're
still locked out of the main systems. So and then
there's a grand going, well, there's nothing we can do
except monitor the gradual failure of the entire station. Not
exactly a fun way to pass the time. And the
door's like, there's really nothing you can do, and then
a tweet like it's like all we can access from

(09:34):
here the subsidiary systems, airflow, climate, that sort of thing,
and the door says airflow, how much air do we
have on board? And Maitland says, well, the air scribbers
reoxygenate the air in a three day cycle. Why He's like, well,
I was just wondering if we could do some of
it to work against the drag of the water, expelling

(09:55):
jets of air to keep us afloat. But we can't
leave people without anything to breathe. And then of course
the twilight say no, but we have reserve tanks, a
whole month's worth of spare oxygen. Maitland's like yes. So,
you know, the three of them starting to jabber together,
like oh yeah, we can come up to this and

(10:15):
we can do that, and we can figure it out like
that and we can make that work. And na Dar
is feeling very smug. He's got them all working. And
then we cut back to Fisto and there's this page.
It looks like it's digital page sixteen, and he is
going through a flooded hallway, igniting his lightsaber is lit
and lighting the way, and it's really wonderfully drawn here.

(10:37):
And that's where Nadar finds a master. I've been looking
for you, and I thought you were helping the engineers.
I was, I did they have a plan. What happened
to your army? You hurt? Just a graze and all
part of my plan. I followed the saboteurs down here,
you found them? Who was it? Come with me. We're
about to find out, and that's where boom, they come
upon them. You know, there's the three that Fisto has

(10:58):
been chasing, and there's four more, and it looks like
they're arming or trying to arm some sort of major
explosive device, and there's a guy working intently on it
with some laser scalpels. He's like, well, deal with them.
I need you to hold them off, and you too,
help us, bring your blasters. So one, two, three, four, five,
six of them set off to go up against Kit

(11:19):
Fisto and his paddo on and we get this great
two page spread of Kit and Uh and Nadar being
attacked but you know, dodging the dodging the laser bolts,
you know, doing some great acrobatic work. And it's again
it's some really good stuff here, especially with the way
Kit Fisto is fighting. Always find to watch Kit fight

(11:40):
and you know Kit has a disabled a system and uh,
you know, the the the I guess, you know, the
pro not protesters. Maybe I guess we could probably se
it tours, you know, find themselves. There's nothing else we
could do. So they drop their guns and the Dar comes,
you know, comes a pro is as well, going unless

(12:01):
you've got more blasters you want to cut in half.
I think you'd better take us who take us to
whomever's in charge, don't you? And Kit looks over it
as this, Padawan, I'm proud of you, Padawan. Your wit
is improving. And so they take him to the guy
who is dealing. He looks like he's building the bomb,
and you know, he's like, I thought, I told you
to take care of it. I'm sorry, boss, but they

(12:21):
are Jedi. Jedi, what makes you so special? We're not special,
says Kit. We're just trying to save lives rather than
destroy them. And the Dar says, now step away from
that device immediately. Well, I suppose it doesn't matter now
it does it? And it turns out to be samret Nell.
And Dar's like samret Nell, But you were advocating for
the station at the conference, all while trying to destroy

(12:42):
it this whole time. Pretending to fight for the station
was the perfect cover. No one would suspect the truth.
He explains that I've been making a fortune selling artifacts
from that ruined city, but now the station risks putting
a stop to all of it. And Kid's like stolen
artifacts that belong to the people of this world. This
is your history. Now I'm an opportunity to make a
quick credit, and Samon's like, if you only knew how

(13:03):
many credits. And besides, it was never meant to go
this far. We were only meant to scare people into
backing Lady Vulcan the protesters. But then one of our
submersibles got caught in the first blast, and we figured
we might as well finish a job. After all, nobody
will go near the ruins after again, after a disaster
like this, Who knows, maybe I'll be able to sell
a bits of the station in the future too, And
Kit just you know, approaches him. No, I don't think

(13:24):
so it's over, grandemeister. You know, I rather think it is.
And Sam leaps and presses the button on the device
and we get a boom, and kids like, what have
you done? And from outside we see the station lose
one of its legs, collapsing into the surface of the

(13:45):
seafloor and the ruins and just ugh, it's just devastating it. However,
it slides to a halt before going off the cliff,
and then you know, we see the creatures coming in
and exploring and we get this inset circular panel of
kick going, you fool, you've doomed us all and then

(14:08):
we get it to be continued, and that's you know
where we will find out what happens next in Tides
of Terror number four of four, which, despite what it
says in the book is said that's coming in December,
it's not. It's actually not due out January seventh, so

(14:29):
you know, so I have to wait till the new
year for that so fun book, great art and kit
fistos captured perfectly, I think in these stories, so just
just absolutely perfectly. So with that we will take a
short break and they will come back for Star Wars
number seven. Our next up is Star Wars number seven

(15:07):
from Marvel. This is to the brink, this is the
We've got three issues to go on. This writer's Alex Sagora.
Art is by Pete Woods. Letters are by Virtual Calligraphies
Clayton Coles. The main cover artist is Phil Noto. There
are variants, of course. The Jedi Knights by Bengal, Battle
for Indoor fortieth Anniversary by im gist Ez you Cure

(15:29):
has a variant. John Tyler, Christopher's Action Figure Assistant Editor
is Mikey J. Basso, Mark Pinitia is the editor and
Cebe Sebelski is the editor in chief, same crew for Lucasfilm.
So essentially what's happened here is uh Luke and Wren
and Han and Bolt Violence, Diego Valence Nation have have

(15:49):
gone to cal trace uh because they are trying to
figure out what's going on within the Guy uh and
you know, having discovered, you know, the tensions between the
n Guy and the Finneral Consortium. Leah meanwhile has activated
Bastion for a mysterious mission because of course, uh, you know,
the funeral are being uh shall we say, counseled less

(16:13):
than wisely by a familiar faith from the Battle of
jack Who. It's a it's a nice change having piled
Pete Woods on on the art. It's definitely miss film NOTO,
but this one has a little more of a I
don't know, more like almost almost got a nineteen ninety
Star Corse effect to it, and it's got really great
pacing and action. And what really stands out is Clayton
Cole is a is the way Pete has colored everything.

(16:36):
It's a it's it's just shockingly vibrant while being matted
at the same time. But there's some great perspectives here,
especially with the Jesuit punching the some of the pirates
as well as you know those and there's some really
good interplay and tension between mon Mathma and Leah as
they you know, as as you know, Leah informs mon

(16:58):
Mathma that she is dispatched Bastion to essentially take out, yeah,
you know, a scura. So and eventually, you know, everything
does come to a head. There is a confrontation with
the Prime Minister. You know, Luke is there trying his
best to offer a council and to prevent Jez writ

(17:21):
and then the guy revels from from lashing out and
doing something rash, but you know, calmer heads prevail, but
still it's to be expected. And of course there is
a heck of a drop scene as we get to
the end with the Urania a secure and it doesn't

(17:42):
end well for anyone involved, and it's just very much
setting up you know, conflict to come in issues eight,
nine and ten, So it's gonna be a inching way
they draw this series to a conclusion, and it's good,
it's a good detail that's that we got this nice
focus on the Nagui and the machinations with the Funreal Consortium,

(18:06):
So we'll see where that goes in the way it's
to be continued. Any series has proven to be quite
enjoyable and is really much like Legacy of Vader, is
really sort of adding to the foundational lore of the
sequel trilogy era. Of course, it's a set before the

(18:26):
events of the Phantom or that's not the Phantom Menace.
That's a whole another trilogy altogether, but the Force Awakens.
This is written by Rodney Barnes. Art is by Ramone
Rosanna's Guru E Effects is handling the color art of
VC's Joe Karamina letters. The cover artists are Ramone Rosanas

(18:48):
and Guru e Effects for the main one, and there
are variants including one by Jeremy Wilson and one by
Ricky Yagawa and Alex Sinclair. Carlos Law is the book designer,
Adam Delray is the low designer, Mikey J. Basso is
the assistant editor, and Mark Beniczia is of course the editor. C. B.
Sebalski is the editor in chief. From Lucasfilm, we have
Robert Simpson the senior editor, Grace Aris. In this one,

(19:11):
she's listed as associate editor, but she's now editor. Michael
Siglin the creative director, Troy Alders the art director, Phil
Shostack the creative art manager, and from the story group
we have Pablo Hudalgo, Matt Martin, and Emily Shkukhani. So
Ah bring you up to date over the previous two issues.
Han is in a bit of a rut and it

(19:35):
seems that his life is not the one of adventure
that we all know, and he is feeling his years
and his age, and he is struggling, perhaps struggling is
too hard of a word with you know, the decisions
he's made with Leah and Ben. And of course, in

(19:56):
the process of all of this, he's lost the Millennium Falcon,
and so he's equated losing the ship to losing his way,
and he wants to feel like his old self again.
So he is searching with Chewbacca to find his missing ship.
He's had to run in with Gannis Dukane, who then
stole their current vessel, and now that they've tracked down

(20:18):
the irving boys who might know where the Falcon is,
they're going to question them. That's where the crux of
this issue. However, we opened up in the past on
Hannah City and Hindrilla, and it's a younger Ben Solo
who is being home schooled, which would probably make sense,
and the droid is talking about, you know, how to

(20:40):
maintain vigilance to maintain democracy, which of course is highly
relevant in this day of age. But outside in the driveway,
Han is tinkering with a speeder and Ben would much
rather be there. So Ben being Ben, rewires the education
droid and has him speed up the lessons. So he

(21:02):
goes from this is how we citizens at the galaxy
peacefully negotiate what our future should look like, to remember
the lessons of the pass and order to protect their
future healthy Republican cards, vigil and citizens occurred to stand
up for what right did a lesson? And then droid
shuts down and Ben runs out, Okay, Dad, I'm ready,
and Lay's like, WHOA, that was fast, and so Ben
runs out beautifully mannic here lawn by the way, spacious house,

(21:24):
and Han, it's just in time, slipping in there and
get that last bolt fastened, and Leah Leah looks out
from the door, what was your lesson today? About Ben
the galaxy? Uh huh what about it? How big it is? So?
I'm good to check the droid logs. Won't see anything weird.
Give the kid a break, says Han. He's been sitting
all day, plus I could use the help. Come on, Ben, mom,

(21:45):
finish your school work and then you can play. And
Han is like, well, this stuff is important too, LEA
kid's gotta learn how to handle himself. Sure after his studies.
Why kids school come after this? Han asks? You know,
that's not how it works, Han. And Han looks at Ben,
who's got a helmet on. When just watch him try
it out real quick. It'll be fun, really, Han, And
Han goes to start the speeder. This should be good

(22:06):
to go. Click, click, whoosh, and the speeder flies off
and smacks into a tree and falls apart. Leah looks
at Han, who's so suitably chastened. Kids got to learn
to handle himself, Han, The last responsibility you handled was
in the boom. That's where we cut to the present
and Han and Chewy are interrogating the irving boys and

(22:29):
you know he uh, he says, the millium falcon. Okay,
irving boys, where is it? The Milliam Falcon. You mean
the greatest ship in the galaxy. The handling speech, he
flies like a dream. The kesselrn alone makes it legend.
And Hans m And who was the captain during the
Kestle run? How would I know me? It's not like
a ship can pilot itself. You may have heard of,
but I'm one heck of ah, says Chewy. Yes, I

(22:51):
know where we're here, Chewie, nothing wrong with imparting a
little history lesson while we're at it the last time?
Where's the falcon? And then the irvy boys cop to it?
Ounkar Pluts told it from us after we stole it.
Oht Car put the crowlut, that'd be the one. We
tried to track him down with no luck. For a
moment we weren't even sure he had it. Then we
got proof, and I was like proof, what kind of proof?
How about a holo image of pluck with your ship.

(23:14):
I don't even know this is real For a few
credits that he woe could cobble this together? Well, look
at the coating on the edge and we see it
picture of own car standing in front of the falcon
on Jack who it's the code sert signature no way
we could fake it. What do you think, Han says
the Chewy, Yeah, maybe they're telling the truth. We're borrowing
your ship. What do you mean by borrowing? I don't

(23:34):
speak Wookie. He said, we'll borrow your ship like you
borrowed the falcon. Oh, one of the irving Boys goes
to be careful, it pulls a little to the left.
And to be honest, I would give up my ship
too if I had a bow caster that Chewy was
holding on too, standing right behin me or standing right
in front of me. So we cut later and they're
flying through hyperspace and the Irving Boys ships, and Han

(23:56):
is talking to Chewy, and you know he realized. Then,
you know, Chewy confesses to the fact that Chewey has
been talking to Leya. How do you know I haven't
spoken to Layah? What does she say? And then we
you know, cut back just to a little bit before
all of these events, and Chew he's in there talking
to Laya. Yes, Han is who he is, and a

(24:18):
thing that changes and somehow remains the same. Oh, of
course I care about him. That's not enough to maintain
what our relationship was, but it can be a bridge
to what it can be, and she says this, she's
holding an image from a scene from the Empire. Strikes
back with what Han and Chewy and the rebels landing
bay on hawth Ben needs Han. I never get in

(24:40):
the way of that. And again, I'm not even sure
Han's interested in us, And we cut back to Chewy
and Han in the cockpit of the Herban boy ship.
I've never been good with this stuff. Oh thanks pal
oh Jack who makes sense? Gnarley plays surely that's where
plots hold up. We get them, mo, I mean Falcoon
back and I can figure out the rest of my life. Meantime,

(25:02):
Plut isn't going down without a fight. Then, of course,
we cut to Ducaine, who is in his ship that
he had sold from Hana Chewi, so he, you know,
is going to warn unkar Plut that Han and Julie
are coming, and that's what he does. And we go

(25:25):
to Jack who and there's Unkar Plut surrounded by his
piles of junk. I will make this short, Uncar, I
have information you may find a value, Ducaine says, in
a holographic image. Why would I hold council with a
scoundrel such as yourself? Ducaine, especially unannounced, so disrespectful when
it comes to saving the life of a friend. Urgency

(25:45):
is the only necessity my life. Surely you jest? Or
perhaps there's a scheme you're hoping will slip by me
while my focus is settled on the self preservation. No scheme.
Junk boss of Jack, who I only bring admiration and concern.
Han Solo is mean to kill you. He's aware that
you have custody of the Millennium Falcon and wants it back.

(26:05):
Hans Solo, that's the name I haven't heard in quite
some time. I welcome a visit by him. Thank you
to Kine. Perhaps we can do business after all. We
cut back to Hana Chewi and they're they're debating and
discussing what Han has done wrong, you know, And you
know Han's a old you know, upset that Leah has

(26:28):
gone to Chewy instead of him, and he can't quite
figure it out why And he's like, well, you know,
sure we're pals, but now I'm questioning how good of
buds we actually are. Why wait till now to tell me?
And exactly how long have you been chatting up about
your old partner? Get my act together? I'll have you know,
my act has always been together, and I don't need
an overgrown fur ball putting his stuff into stuff that's
none of his business. Like I'm trying to help, trying

(26:50):
to help me, well let me, well, let me let
you in on something, pal, I don't need your helper.
What did you call me? I only did that once
and it was the ale. Oh yeah, they're about to
go to you know, take the fisticuffs here. And that's
when the alert goes off. What's that? Ah, fighter ships?
Somebody tipped off plot. So four ships are flying up

(27:11):
from the surface of Jack who they're really kind of cool.
They're snubnosed spiders with you know, very interesting vertical vertical
stabilizers and they come in flying after Han, and of
course this gets the juices flying for Han. You know,
chew He is flying and Hannis is is working the
gun turn on the top of the ship and he's
having a good time with it because he's uh, you know,

(27:33):
he's he's reliving old times and he handily dispatches all
the ships. Whoo whoo, yeah, I know where there's still
two more left. Can a guy celebrate a minor victory?
This will be easy as one two. And then Hans grinning.
You know, sometimes I amaze myself. Nice little callback, a
piece of cake. How's it looking up here? And then

(27:54):
you know she's like, well, Jack who. Then they look
down through the through the viewport and they see the
looming expanse of Jack. Wu. Yeah, I know, Jack, Who's
a dangerous place, trash pile of the galaxy. But chewy,
old buddy, the Falcon is somewhere on that planet, and
it's up to us to bring her home. And so
they come, and they land onto the sands. Hans got

(28:15):
his trusty blaster. The port bay opens. All right, keep
your eyes open. We get in and out. Don't be
so negative. We've got this coast looks clear, not as
clear as you prefer, solo, and there's onn gar Plut.
Welcome to Chuck, to Jack, who I hope to make
your stay as painful as possible. Don't worry, I'll come
up with something fine, Hans, that's a jew. We worry.

(28:39):
So solid issue, lots of fun in action, and we're
getting to the root of the series. It's you know,
it's not just a search for the Falcon, it's a
search for what was and what could be again. This
is one of these series. It's a it is coming
up very slowly and gradually, but it's it's gonna have
a nice payoff. So definitely do check this one out.

(29:20):
And that's it again, Jeff, feel better. I can't wait
to get you back on and can't wait to have
you here. It's lonely without you, but rest assured that
the thoughts of several several several folks, including myself, are
with you and we eagerly await to your recovery. So
