Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to Star Wars Splash Page Comics and Review.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is episode number four hundred and seventy seven. Welcome back, Jeff.
Good to have you back. I missed you.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
Beg me stage.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm hun.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
As beerf park on. I don't want since.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Running the gas. Thanks Matt. It is good to be back.
That's pretty much all I got. I am tired.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Out abundance of privacy. I did not really mention anything
on our socials, so I would wake that up you
to share while you were gone. It's not you don't
have to. It's your life at you, It's your world.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
I've always been a pretty open person. The short version
is my liver is trying to kill me. Uh. I
was diagnosed in nineteen ninety six with fatty liver disease
non alcoholic fatty liver disease because I didn't touch any
alcohol till I was in my thirties, and for the
last few years we've been keeping an eye on it.
I would get a sonogram every few years. It's been
looking good. My liver enzimes have been coming down there
to like normal levels. Now. What I did not realize

(01:18):
was that wasn't telling the whole story, and my liver
has now moved from fatty liver to early stage cirrhosis.
So this is my cautionary tale to all of you,
any of you out there who dealing with fatty liver disease,
make sure you're getting your sonograms at least once a year.
Because my new normal is low sodium, low fat diet
and sonograms twice a year. It's not going to change

(01:42):
my lifestyle a whole lot other than I'm just gonna
have to plan my meals ahead better. No more, i'm
kind of hungry, I'll just go grab something down the
street because I have to be able to control my
sodium and fat intake. But you know, thankfully, Pam and
I both enjoy cooking and learning how to make new things,
so it's going to be kind of adventure for us.
But at the end of the day, I was in

(02:02):
the hospital for a week. I am exhausted, and it
could have been a whole lot worse. I'm very grateful
that we caught it as early as we did. The
first symptom I had was Saturday. I went to the
emergency room on Sunday and the rest is history.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
It means fewer corn dogs for you in.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
The future, far fewer. Yes, far fewer.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
I'm sorry, it's all right.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
This is my life. I've never been able to get
away with anything that other people get away with, whether
that be pranks, cheating, cutting in line, or eating what
I want when I want. So it's just par for
the course.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
When you're Jeff oh Man. I know that feeling. I
know it well.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
But I appreciate all the well wishes from everyone, you included, Matt,
and I know we've had a few people that knew
what was going on, so I appreciate everybody pulling for
of me. Things have been great, Pam has been great.
Pam is still great, She's always great. But I'm here.
We get one book to discuss, thankfully, because I think
that's all I've got in me.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, just the one book. It's Jedi Night's number nine
of ten. So I guess technically the penultimate issue of
this series, depending on what the solicits will reveal. Who knows. So.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
But before we dive into that, Matt, what kind of
news have we got for this week? Anything we do?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Actually? First off, the solicits from Marvel for February will
actually be coming out this week because of the Thanksgiving
holiday next week, so be sure to keep an eye
out on the Facebook page and the Blue skyfeed, you know,
Thursday afternoon. Truth be told, I think it's only going
to be one book. I think it's only going to

(03:46):
be Star Wars number ten. So but you know, we'll
see if there's any new series or a mini series
announced when they do the solicits. I guess yeah. It's
also it's always feasible that if there isn't a book coming,
it'll be on Star Wars dot Com on Tuesday of
this week or even Wednesday. But we'll find out. Other
than that, it's not quite the High Republic more. But

(04:10):
if you are a fan of the Higher Republic Adventures,
next year is going to be your year, because thankfully,
dark Horse is going to be collecting the complete Phase
two and Phase three books that it published across a
series of three trades. The first one is the complete

(04:35):
Phase two on April twenty eighth. Then it collects the
High Republic Adventures one through eight, Phase two, the Nameless
Terror one through four, and the Quest of the Jedi
mini series or one shot not mini series. So and
then but then coming on you know, after that may
twenty six, we get The High Republic Adventures the Complete

(04:56):
Phase three Part one trade paperback, which is going to
to collect the first ten issues of the series, Saber
for Hire one through four, and the Crash Landing and
Crash and Burn one shots. And then on June thirtieth,
we get the Complete Phase three Part two trade paperback,
which will collect issues eleven through twenty the Echoes of

(05:19):
Fear four issue mini series, the four issue Dispatches from
the Occlusion Zone, many series, and three one shots including
the twenty twenty five annual, The Wedding Spectacular, and the
Battle of Ariadu. These are going to be paperback, They're
not going to be a hardcover. But you know, this
is great because you're gonna be able to get everything
collected now, you know, for the for the High Republic,

(05:39):
so chrise you. We've also got, you know, from Marvel
I believe early. I believe next year, you know, we're
gonna get you know, the the Omnibus, collecting all the
last of their High Republic stories, so that that'll be nice.
So and you know, and that's basically it, other than
the fact that you know, we posted some more vary

(06:00):
covers on the Facebook and Blue Sky feeds today. Go
check him out. You can see him for Star Wars
number nine and of course Han solo for the Falcon
number five. And that is kind of it. Oh, except
there's one more thing out. On Monday of this week,
as we are recording this, Dark Horse dropped character cards

(06:23):
of four new Clone Troopers that are going to be
in Hyperspace stories the Bad Batch Rogue Agents mini series,
which launches with issue number one on December first, and
they include Cole, Hank, Rice and Charger. And you can
see the illustrations that the mini series artist Reese Hannigan
has drawn, so definitely go check those out. You can

(06:45):
find them on the Blue Sky page, you can find
them on the Facebook page, and you can even find
them in the Star Wars comic subwriter on Redd. So
that's it. That's all the news I got. Man.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
All right, Well, thank you for that, Matt. We'll take
a short break and be back to discuss Jedi Knight's
number nine of.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
We assumed in exactly.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
All right. This confused me when I got the digital
from from Marvel today because it's a wrap around cover.
I got a little confused in my convalescing stupor, but
really like this cover it either way.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Oh, it's really cool. It's a great cover and it's
very evocative of what we see in this issue. So
this this one is of course Jedi Knights number nine.
The issue is titled Chrysalis. It is written by Mark Guggenheim.
Art is by Mattebek Mussabakoff. Color artist is by Luis Guerrero.
Letters of by Virtual Calligraphies Clayton Coles. The main cover

(07:40):
is by Mattebec and Heesusa Bertov And there are variants
including Dan Jurgens, Brett Breeding and Laura Martin's action homage variant,
although I haven't figured out which which cover their homaging,
and there's and of course there's one by John Jang,
and then of course Torn Clark has his Lightsaber variants well.

(08:00):
Book designer is Carlos Lao. The assistant editors on this
book that's Mikey J. Basso and Drew Baumgartner. Mark Panitzia
is the editor. C. B. Sebelski is Marvel's editor in chief,
and for Lucasfilm we have Robert Simpson the senior editor,
Grace Rs the associate editor who apparently is editor now,
depending on which book you're looking at. Michael Siglane is
the creative director, Troy Alders is the art director, and

(08:23):
Phil Shostak is the creative art manager. From the story group,
it's Pablo Hidalgo, Matt Martin, and Emily Shcokani. So this is,
you know, this is.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Kind of a mini story arc we've had in this one.
And when we had you know, the first few were
like you know, one shots or two two issue arcs,
and we've been on this one for what at least
three issues now, right.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Well, this this actually stems from the very first issue
because because Corlis Wrath is you know, sort of the
the underlying story beat of this ten issue mini series
or I didn't want to call it many series, It's
called maxi series. Uh. And this is where we find
out finally because you know, you know, in some of
the previous issues is Corless, you know, has been telling
Qui Gon you know, I'm coming to kill you because

(09:03):
of what you did, and Qui Gon is like, dude,
I don't even know you. So and it turns out
that yeah, yeah, Qui Gon does know him. He just
didn't realize he knew him because he's changed by a
different space. Yeah, you know, we opened the page and
you know, Qui Gon is, you know, in the bed
where he's been on the medically induced coma, and he
wakes up. And of course, from the first time I

(09:23):
saw this on the preview that dropped last week, I thought, wow,
that's almost like a christ like illustration.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Well, and let me just say, as someone who just
got out of the hospital, who I had to laugh
halfway through this issue in Pamsen, Why are you laughing?
I said, Well, the episode starts with Qui Gon waking
up in a hospital bed, and halfway through everybody's telling
him he needs to rest, which seems a little on

(09:54):
the nose for me this week. So this was a
good message for me.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
I'll say, you need to Bud and I and I.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Should say I mentioned a wrap around cover. I was
looking at issue number one, not issue number nine, Folks,
I'm telling you, I am struggling. Uh, there was not
a rapper round cover. So if you're looking for one
in your local comic shop, that that's on me. It's
but the cover we got is amazing. Anyway that you
were saying, carry on, I apologize.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
So anyway, this to me, this image you know. You know,
one thing I really had fun with it, especially on
social media, was you know, you know, that look on
Qui Gon's face when he realizes that either A he
did leave the iron on back at the temple on
Corrus sand or b Anakin is not in fact the
chosen one. So but so he had a lot of
fun with that one. But yeah, and it just basically,

(10:40):
you know, we get a little, you know, nice, very
tight synopsis of why Qui Gon is in the in
the in the medical infirmary at the temple. We get
doctor rig NeiMa, she's there the Jedi temple position, and
she's telling him what's going on. Uh, And you know,
we he goes and he meets with Windu and Secura,
you know, and you know, he he's you know, he

(11:03):
realizes that the apparently he died for a few minutes, uh,
and that passage over or through the veil has led
to some revelations, which is why he is you know,
he you know, he is he is ready to embark
upon another journey to get to the bottom of why

(11:26):
he was stabbed almost to death, if not to death
at least momentarily, you know. And he's talking to Ilah
secure and mace window about an eyelids like, well, you know,
corlis rass blade was lace with the toxin. We were
able to obtain the antidote from the banished on Cinsara
and banished apparently they were previously called the Behu. And
mas Is like, since you've had dealings with him before, yes,

(11:47):
I suppose you could say that. And that's where we get,
you know, we cut back to him as a padawan,
you know, and of course his master is Count Dooku.
Uh and uh, it's it's it's quite an eye opening,
uh story, at least to my mind, you know, because
you know, we're so used to Count Dooku being manipulative,

(12:10):
uh and quixotic uh and you know, and and and
you know, frankly resentful of the Jedi, you know, because
we you know, when we were first introduced to him,
he was much later in life. You know, he'd seen things,
and you know, the veneer of everything had worn off.
And of course, over the past what probably gosh, five

(12:30):
to ten years, we've learned a lot more about Dooku
that has really just you know, made him into this
very complex character, giving him a lot of dimensionality. If
you will, and this one we get to see his
leadership style as a master with Qui Gon, you know,
and he is, you know, he's he's basically telling Qui

(12:52):
Gon as they're flying in to to Cinsarrow, you know that, look,
there's there's a there's some badandits and riggins on the planet. Uh,
they are attacking people and you know they have don't
don't have a lot of dealings with the Republic, but
they have called U sin and this is our remit
And Qui Gon is you know that to understand. But
you know, and he says, but I sense that my

(13:14):
involvement here will prove problematic. And of course Qui Gon
is being supportive. You know, look, you're far too hard
on yourself. You've proved yourself more than ready for a
mission of this kind. In fact, I think it would
be instructive for us both if I followed your lead
this time. So Qui Gon is taking lead on this. Uh,
and he's thinking about that as he's talking to to

(13:36):
Mason Isla and he realizes that, Huh, he's gotta, he's gotta,
he's gotta, he's got to figure out why these two
are linked. And so of course he does what all
good Jedi do, even mediocre Jedi do. He heads to
the uh, the Jedi archives and talks to Joe Castanu.

Speaker 1 (13:52):
Who was actually helpful this time.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Yeah, and unusually, so it's very nice. So uh, and
he discovers thanks. You know that you know that the
you know, he believes Corlis Wrath is a is a Cinsaron,
but you know, Corlis Wrath looks nothing like this Cinsarron
that we see the hollow image of into which Jack,
who's Joe Castanus, says, well, it's rare, but I've heard
that a small number of Cinsurrons alter their appearance through

(14:17):
an ordeal known as chrysalis in Qui Gon. Chrysalis, the
Censorrons speak of it as a rite of passage, but
it's more akin to a crucible. The vast majority of
those who undertake it die. Those who survive, however, emerge
with superior fighting skills and altered appearance. And of course
that's where the light turns on, you know, in Qui
Gon's head. So it is possible that this man is

(14:40):
someone I've encountered before. You're saying, quite possible, Jocasta, assuming
the individual you have in mind, survived the chrysalis. I
believe he did, it seems and then you know, we
go back to Cinsa and then and you know, he
lays up. We see what happens here. You know, he
goes to the head of the bandits, you know, tries
to down Look, we're from the Republic. Your raids on

(15:02):
these local villages are violating numerous articles of galactic law,
making your criminals in the eyes of the Republic. And
they're like, yeah, we don't recognize the authority of the
Republic Jedi, you know, And Qui Gon's like, well, look,
recognize it or not, it is our responsibility to put
it into these attacks. And I would much rather prefer
to negotiate a mutual, beneficial cessation of hostilities.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
And I wanted to comment on something. I thought it
was interesting that young Qui Gon to me, looks like
Noel Fielding, you know, you know what I'm talking about.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Yeah, you're right, he does. Yeah. I would not have
caught that unless there's.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Especially especially when he's when he's like boeing up to
this guy. It's long about digital page fifteen, when he
starts using the Jedi mind trick on him, is where
I noticed he looks a lot like Noel fielding to
me that was interesting.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Yeah, God, that's You're exactly right, dude, you're exactly right.
So so anyway Qui Gon you know, is doing, is
using his teachings as you know, as a Jedi pad one.
You know, let's let's let's you know, peace, let's do
peaceful solutions, let's not resort to violence. Let's see if
we can find a common ground. And of course, uh,
you know, the leader is just like, nah, no, I'm good,

(16:19):
We're not going to do this, and so he and
Duku are overwhelmed. Uh Now, but back in the present,
you know, obi Wan has come to confront Qui God
of U saying, look, you're supposed to be resting. You're
not supposed to go on a mission. You know. He goes, well,
you're not a doctor, obi Wan. He I know. That's
why I talked to the doctor. The doctor said he

(16:40):
should be resting. And he goes, did you tell the
doctor I'm stubborn? He goes, yeah, so that's why instead
of you taking a Jedi starfighter, I've requisitioned us a
Jedi ship and we're going to go together into this planet.
So uh, and so we cut back to the past,
and you know, they get they get overrun. They just
they get overwhelmed. And you know, as Duke says, you know,

(17:00):
you know, Qui Gon says, we have to we have
to retreat, and duc is like, agreed, we must retreat. Uh.
And then you know, we we see them. We see
Qui Gon and Uh and Uh Douku meditating outside of
their ship. Uh, and you know, and you know they're
breaking it down. They're you know, they're doing a you know,
an incident report if you will, you know, and Qui

(17:21):
Gon is very upfront. I acted out of innocence, naievete
there's no bargain to be made with criminals. Why did
you let me go to them with such a foolish plant?
And Duker says, Master Yoda is fond of saying that
failure is the greatest teacher. You took the action you
thought was best under the Jedi code. The problem lies
when you confront the limitations of that code. Our order
believes in the fundamental goodness of all beings, relies on it.

(17:44):
But as you've seen, the galaxy is vast and contains
as much evil as it does goodness. And then you know.
This is intermixed with Qui Gon explaining to Obi Wan
what he's doing, you know, and why he's traveling. You know,
I have I have to go to Cinsa to confront
my past and the guilt and shame I feel over
my actions there. Well, what happened on Sesara, Master, what

(18:04):
happened was that I listened to the wrong advice. And
then we cut back to Qui Gon talking to Dooku
and he asks Douku, and how can we fight such
evil by fighting? Douku says, the Jedi are not clergy.
We are knights, defenders and protectors, yes, but fighters when necessary,
and like it or not, fighting requires aggression, and aggression

(18:25):
requires anger, and Qui Gon is well, Master Fiotas is
that anger leads to the dark side, to which Dooku
replies and Parry's if you will only when anger is
in control of you, rather than you being in control
a bit. Anger is part of being human, Qui Gon.
And in the proper hands, even Jedi hands, it can

(18:46):
be a powerful weapon. And so Qui Gon returns and
the guys say, ah, you're back. How delightful are you
planning on turning tail and running away. Again, No, we
have a disagreement. You won't parlay, so the only alternative
is to fight. And the guy is like, yeah, now
we're getting somewhere, And what do you propose, young Jedi?
Single combat? If you win, my master and I will

(19:07):
leave Cinsara in peace. But if I win, you promise
never to threaten or attack another Sinsara. And again I
studied up on your culture here, honor is paramount. You
will hold to the terms of this arrangement happily, with
one small modification. I may be many things, but a
destroyer of children is not one of them. If we're
to have trial by combat, it should be at least fair,
don't you agree I do good? In that case, you

(19:29):
will employ no Jedi trickery and I will choose an
appropriate surrogate to fight on my behalf. Come forth, Boom boom,
Davros Hex And that's where we end. And this last
page is really kind of I thought it was kind
of stirring, you know, because we see young Qui Gon
staring up at Davros Hex, and then we see you know,
Qui Gon, Jedi Master Qui Gon staring up at Corless Wrath,

(19:53):
and Boom's where it goes, you know, and that's where
it ends. And so now we find out how it
all ends the tenth issue.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
Uh, and you know, we'll find out who Corlis Wrath
was before.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Well we know he was Dabros you know, he was
dabros hexs and we I know who he is, but
now we got to figure out what they see.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
But he looks the same. That's why I was confused
because to me, they looked the same. I didn't realize
that that was.

Speaker 2 (20:15):
No, they are one and the same. He just you know,
dabros Hex is now Corless Wrath, and so uh because
clearly you know, da this is before davros Hex has
gone but gone through the crysalis.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
And see looking at the at the images, they looked
enough alike to me. And again full disclosure, folks, I've
still got sick brain. So okay, so he was davros Hex.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah he was. But now we got to figure out
what the heck qui Gon did that caused Davros Hecks
to undergo the chrysalis, right, Uh, and I guess we will.
We will find out on December seventeenth, when Star Wars
Jedi Night's number ten is in fact released excellent.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yeah, really really good book. You know, this series has
been kind of hit or missed for me, but this
direc and this issue especially I really liked. I like
seeing seeing you know, Dooku's sort of needling in just
that little bit of the dark side that he sort
of cops to later on.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
Yeah. Man, well, I just I've been enjoying it, and
I think a lot of the reason I've been enjoying
it is I like the way Mark Guggenheim writes, because
he brings his his television scripting experience into comics.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
Absolutely, you can absolutely tell that.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
Yeah. So all right, anyway, thanks for joining us. That
was it.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
That was it? All right? So what do we have
for next week? Matt? I think we just had one book, correct.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
We just have the one book. On Tuesday, November twenty fifth,
the Star Wars Darth Vader Modern era epic collection Vader
Down gets released, and that collects Star Wars a right,
excuse me, Darth Vader thirteen to twenty five, Star Wars
thirteen fourteen, and Vader Down number one. But on Wednesday
we get Boba Fett, Black, White, and Red, number three
of four. The issue written by Ethan Sacks, so I'm

(21:52):
really looking forward to that one.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Excellent. So we'll be back to discuss that. We are
recording this on Monday, November seventeenth, so Happy life Day
to all of you who are listening.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
Oh, definitely, definitely, and we'll be.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Back next week, hopefully both of us again, to discuss
that and anything else that happens between now and then,
and hopefully it's far less eventful on my.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
End, fingers crossed. All right, how's your spleen.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
As far now? My spleen is fine, alright, alright, so
until next week. Four Star Wars splash page. I'm Jeff,
I'm Matt made a four Speed.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Weekly always.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
The Star Wars splash page.
