This is going on right now, but by the time

get Steven's thoughts on both games in Lethbridge and Calgary,
and a great showcase for some ohlers out there right now,

(01:43):
including a member of the Gulf Storm, which on the
first part of today's show. As you can see on
the video version, I'm joined once again by mister Worldwide,
the OTC, Mark Perry, the color commentator for the Golf
Store on Rogers TV, and the Golf Today News reporter. Mark,
You're on with us early in the season when we
we had that Memorial Cup bid between Kitchener and GWELF,

(02:04):
and I got to give your flowers. You more than
anybody else I think, said that GWELF had a very
good shot even though they were considered the quote unquote
underdogs against the Kitchener Rangers, and we got the news
last week. Congratulations, guelf Storm going to be hosting the
twenty twenty seven Memorial Cup.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Well, thank you so much for having me, and thank
you so much for the flowers. And who doesn't love
a good underdog story, I mean, with the Storm and
the Rangers Highway seven rivals bidding for this memorial cup.
I think a lot of people underestimated that that downtown
presence and a lot of the things that the storm

(02:41):
really had to offer and the city had to offer.
And here we are.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, I mean I'm putting the caption of right now
like it's still it's almost like has it really sunk
in yet that gwelf is going to be hosting this,
you know, next year or I guess you know two
years from now if you want to count, because next
year technically is Colonna and twenty twenty six. But you know,
it's how much of an impact mark when we talk
about this, do you think this is going to have

(03:07):
on the local shops?

Speaker 4 (03:08):
We know that the little mall in there as well
in the sleem And Center.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Just how much of a financial and economical impact is
this going to have on the whole Guelf community.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Well, I think it's going to be huge. I mean
I was hearing forty million dollar economic impacts back when
saganaw was hosting it a couple of years ago, and
I really feel like it's a similar thing hearing wealth.
I mean sleem and Center, Yes, it's located in the mall, Yes,
the storm Really I got to add, really embracing the
mall rats theme. And I'm a huge j and Silent

(03:39):
Bob guy, so I really have connected with that. But
when you look at the Sleeman Center and everything that's
surrounded right in the heart of downtown, all the restaurants,
you know, all the mum and pop shops that are
down there as well, I mean, they're going to get
a huge, huge boost in sales just in that week
and a half, I feel because the whole world, the

(04:00):
chl world, is going to be descending upon that downtown,
and there's so much to offer there in so many
different varieties of things. I know people were discounting the
whole We might be under construction throughout this whole processing
g Wealth, so it might just look like construction city.
But this is kind of a point in time where
you know, we know well enough in advance that this

(04:22):
is happening. So the city has already said that they
are going to be working with working with the organization
and saying, hey, you know what, we'll maybe we'll put
this part of the construction kind of to the side
and kind of beautify the downtown a little bit more
and really showcase really what Gwealth is all about. And
again not to discount the fact that it's the by

(04:45):
centennial year, so that's going to be another aspect that
they're going to be doing. And there's so many unknowns
right now in terms of what they're actually going to
be doing, because I think it's still in progress and
putting things together, but definitely very excited. In particular downtown
Gelf is going to be booming with the people and
the economic impact is going to be huge with this tournament.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
And then just talking about year by year and obviously
this The Storm have won some OHL championships in their
in their history there, as you can see on the
video version, you know, four times OHL champions and most
recently in the twenty eighteen nineteen season known as the
Comeback Kids. Just an incredible run for them. But now

(05:27):
you know George Burnett is the general manager, he was
the head coach at that time. You've got Corey Stillman
there all we saw the alumni, Daniel Pie and everybody
that was there for the announcement. So you know, a
rich history in GWELF. And not to take anything away
from Kitchener as well, but you mentioned the bi centennial
year for GWELF and you know they've had some banner

(05:48):
raising with Dustin Brown this past weekend as well.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
So how much do you think that everything.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
That's culminated the last little bit with the golf storm
and and all those those recent announcements have you know,
benefited them to be able to get this as well?
And maybe, you know, I guess the nostalgia of Guelph
and what they've they've done as of late helping them
get something like this as well.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
I think the one big thing that really brought this
all together was the bid. I mean I read something
where it really kind of put it into perspective for me.
Where you have five people that were coming in as
this CHL committee, you only have to convince three of them.
If you can convince three of them that your city

(06:32):
and your organization is better than the other one, that's
all you really need to do. And I really feel
like the bid that they had, you talk about the nostalgia,
you bring back so many of the alumni and all
of these different places in the downtown court showing the
committee around, whether it was the River Run Center across
the street, you know, into the different parks, into the
Sleeman Center itself, you know, being able to bring people

(06:57):
into the Sleeman Center itself and have the popcorn smell.
I mean, the popcorn smell is huge. Being able to
come in and say like, you got me sold and
you see it on the screen there. I mean, maybe
I'll get a raise for this. But the kudos to
Tony Sackson and incredible work that he did on this piece.

(07:19):
He was able to really put together what this bid
and what that day actually looked like from front to back,
and how they were able to get it all together.
And it had a little bit of everything, everything that
Gwelph has to offer and everything that the alumni were
able to talk to these committee members about, saying how well,

(07:40):
how good this place is, how great this city is,
and how good of a job that this organization in
the city is going to do for this memorial cupit.
I think really that's what it all came down to
to really put this together.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
And they had the press conference there, the commissioner was there,
the CHL commissioner as well, and everybody that was a
part of it. So obviously exciting times in Gwelph with
everything that that culminated with that announcement last week, Mark
we were chatting a little bit beforehand of you know,
what is it coming?

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Is it happening today sort of thing, And when it
finally the news broke sort of, I guess the last
question on this was sort of what was your like
initial reaction when and and I guess going forward, just
how excited are you personally for this?

Speaker 3 (08:23):
I mean, to be honest, I was saying, holy bleep.
But I was in the office at the time, obviously
doing my work with Gwelph today and you know, I
hadn't gotten the news as of yet. But Tony ended
up putting me on the on on the desk, say
to actually report on the memorial cup and whoever was.

Speaker 5 (08:44):
Going to get it.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Didn't actually tell me who was going to be getting it,
but said might want to keep an eye out for
this in a press call. As soon as you said
that you might want to keep an eye out for
a press conference, I kind of had it in an
inkling that my goodness, we actually got this, and it
was excitement. It was excitement in the office, and I'm
sure it was excitement around around the city. As soon

(09:06):
as this announcement actually did come out at one o'clock
that afternoon, that this was actually happening, and you know,
it's exciting times and it's going to be very interesting
to see what this team looks like and what this
organization looked like in the next twelve to sixteen months
to you know, perhaps culminate this and not only be
a host, but they want to go in through the

(09:28):
front door, and they want to win the whole thing too.
So I think I also heard this around town. The
real work starts right now. You got the bid, you
got the job done, you're hosting it. Now. Now you
need to put your foots to the ground and showcase
a that you earned it. I mean they did earn it,
but to really truly earn it and win the championship

(09:49):
at the end of the day, because that is the
ultimate goal, to win that Memorial Cup on home ice.

Speaker 1 (09:54):
Yeah, you don't want to go out in the first
round and then get back into it in Saint John
c Dogs and you know you want you want to
have a very strong team. If not in the finals,
you know, losing the conference final or something like that,
the show that you didn't just get get awarded the
the the bid and then you know, weren't deserving participants

(10:15):
from the other three championship teams, So uh saying that
Mark will move on sort of to what what is ahead.
And obviously we look at it right now, the Gulf
Storm of time recording the seventh place in the Western Conference.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
We know what they went through last year.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
We know that, you know they're they're gonna be building
for that next season as well. You know they they
want to build have the foundational blocks that they've sort
of gotten through the draft the last last year or
two with George Burnett bringing in some very talented players
and and obviously having to make a make a really
tough trade when your captain Jet Luchenko comes back from
the Philadelphia Flyers and then you get awarded the Memorial

(10:49):
Cup and a short few days later he's off to
the two the Branford Bulldogs who are obviously all in
five first round picks now on that team, and they
look like poison ready without even a Galationian loss yet
to really, you know, be one of the best teams
to or be the best team to beat the team
to beat in the Ontario Hockey League this upcoming season.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
But it was an.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Important trade for the Gulf Storm and you sort of
have to take your emotions and feelings out of it,
because jet Luchenko did everything he could for the Gulf community,
a great captain on and off the ice, and was
there since he was drafted. So thoughts on the trade
Lane Gallaher two seconds, a third and a fifth come back?
We know Lane Gallaher is a very valuable and talented
young centerman that wins a lot of face off. So

(11:30):
what were your thoughts on the return and just the
trade in general.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
At first glance, I looked at it and said, you're
getting four draft picks and a player for jet Luchenko,
who has been probably the number one trade target for
the last year from this team. But then I started
to really think about it and think, you know, and
maybe there's more to this than just the four draft picks.
You know, maybe there is going to be another trade

(11:56):
on the other side between these two sides. Who knows
what what can end up happening after this season and
after Branford goes for that Memorial Cup. I really think
that there's more to this trade than what you see
on the screen right now, and I really feel like
there's gonna be more to be had in favor of
Gwelph at this point in time, you know, later down

(12:19):
the road, I should say then again what you see there,
to be completely honest with you.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
Yeah, and they made another trade with Branford earlier this year,
getting getting Patrick Babin, who's another you know, young defenseman.
So we've seen that the Hymens and George Burnett have
been able to link up for a couple of trades
already this year. So a lot of young talent coming
in there for the the Guelf storm and knowing that
the you know, the next two years are very important
for them, especially that the twenty twenty six twenty seven season.

(12:46):
But you know, it's a it's a it's a sad
time for gwelf fans losing a guy like Jet Luchenko.
But you know, knowing, you know, with the prospects of
what's to come on the horizon, I think makes it
a little bit less of a blow than maybe if
they weren't awarded then then he was traded, you know,
with them not winning the Memorial Cup. So do you
think that sort of all the positives that came this

(13:08):
week made this a little bit easier to swallow?

Speaker 3 (13:11):
I think so, And I mean I think it's to
be expected that Jet was probably going to be on
the way out as soon as the Memorial Cup bid
was announced and as soon as the gwelf Storm were
awarded the Memorial Cup for twenty twenty seven. I think
there might be more on the horizon. I'm not going
to name names. It wouldn't be fair to some of
the other kids that are still playing on this team,

(13:31):
who I have a lot of respect for and love
to talk to anytime I am down in the bowels
of the sleeve and center. But I think this is
the point in time where you look at the draft
cupboard and you want to add a little bit more
to it. At this point in time, you look at
what saganaw did a couple of years ago when they
went on their run. You know, they had a lot
of draft capital the year that they went for it

(13:53):
with the with hosting the Memorial Cup, but they had
to take that step back. They had to sacrifice a
little bit. So it is a little bit to swallow
for getting rid of Jet, and he's obviously going to
have a chance to do some big things with the
Branford Bulldogs. He wasn't going to be around next season anyway,
because as we all know he's probably gonna play ahl
at minimum next year for Lehigh Valley. So I really

(14:18):
do feel like this was very easy to swallow for myself,
knowing what was what was announced just a few days prior.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
To that, and then looking ahead to sort of the
core there Mark and got the forwards up on the screen,
going to put the d and the goaltenders up as well.
But you know, it's a very young core there. You've
got a couple over agers. I know Ethan Mediama has
been really good since coming over from the Kingston Front
next you know a as an overager leader that won't
be a part of that team next year. But obviously
Jacko Wisik is one of the players that everybody talks about.

(14:48):
With the Gulf Storm young player Will McFadden I think
is somebody who want to bring up as well. But
sort of what is sort of the core that we're
looking at, not necessarily this year, but next year when
GWELF is really looking to take a step forward and be,
you know, one of the best teams the Ontario High
League to be a solid host for this well.

Speaker 3 (15:04):
I really think Yako w Isaac is a big piece
of that. Say, with Carter Stevens number ninety six. He's
been out with injury for the last little bit, but
he's definitely poised to kind of take that next step
forward a season from now. He is a guy that
you know, really lines up nicely on that on that
right wing side and plays plays that right wing side

(15:26):
very normally. The points won't necessarily kind of reflect what
he is able to bring to the table. He really
got things started maybe later on into his rookie season,
but now playing at a point per game pace, he's
a fixture on the power play. He's a guy that
you know, really likes to park himself up front and
really reminds me of Charlie Piquette in his early years,

(15:48):
where Stevens right now, he's getting a lot of his
goals from two feet away from the net, you know,
jamming away at rebounds or you know, getting that power
play opportunity where he's able to screen the goalie, maybe
get those tips in or you know those work just
those passes from down low. But I really feel like
he's going to have that ability to develop into such

(16:10):
a skilled shooter where he's going to get more of
those goals shooting from the high squad off the rush
finding those corners, and I really feel like that's going
to be a kid that's going to be relied upon
heavily next season. And then you take Will McFadden, probably
not going to see him as a forward much longer,
because ever since he shifted over to defense, it's it

(16:31):
was by necessity, between injuries and suspensions, Will had to
move back at at defense for a few games and
he's been there ever since. Played a few games on
defense last season, and I really feel like this season
there was this one thing that really just didn't really
get to me. Is one of the things that I
really thought about with Will is he was trying to

(16:53):
find his place, and you know, it wasn't really putting
up the points as much as he did. You know,
during his his years in that Peterboroughs minor hockey system,
it was really counted upon when he was drafted to
be a sharpshooter, to be a guy that can score
maybe twenty thirty goals a season. But as you can see,
they're the goals haven't really come for him. And I
really feel like that shift back to defense kind of

(17:14):
took that pressure of putting up the points away from
him and ironically, he's been putting up more points per
game since he moved to defense, and I really feel
like his role has really started to evolve and he's
become a really stout, small but mighty offensive defenseman that
can move the puck, get it up the ice, and
get it to the forwards. And you know, Will McFadden

(17:37):
is really kind of finding his piece and finding his
role with this team, not only this year, but moving forward.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
And yeah, I mean, anytime you go from forward to
d it can either go one of two ways, and
it sounds like Will McFadden it has worked out for
him so far.

Speaker 5 (17:55):
What able?

Speaker 4 (17:55):
Why sick?

Speaker 1 (17:56):
Because he's you know, top pick guys have a lot
of high hopes on him. Sixteen point point in nineteen games.
Do you think as an nine berth year, do you
think he'll be one of the main pieces for that
twenty twenty seven year.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Oh? Absolutely. And I really feel like when Gwelph was
going through their early struggles this year, the first ten
or twelve games where it was tough to get wins
and put up points, Yako Wisik was their best player.
He was the guy that was in the top six consistently.
He was putting up points, he was scoring the goals,
the time the goals to really try to you know,

(18:28):
start the rally, if you will, before Luchenko came back.
And then Luchenko kind of really took it and took
it to that next level and started translating some of
those losses into wins. Gwelph went on that run where
they won eight of ten and Wisik was a big
piece of that. And then he ends up going to
the under seventeens, get some development, gets some opportunity there

(18:50):
as well. Now he comes back and that's only going
to be a positive for him moving forward. He's a
big guy for sixteen years of age, and you know
at second overall he is really showcased what he is about.
You know, he can shoot the puck, he can be physical,
he can play a two hundred foot game, he can
streak up the ice. He's got soft, soft hands, let

(19:10):
me tell you, soft hands, and unbelievably, believably really, this
is going to be a guy that is going to
be a superstar in this league. If he doesn't make
the jump to the National Hockey League early, like we
have seen with some Storm players in the last few years.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
I know the Storm announced sort of a leadership group
and Jet Luchenko was part of that. Do you see
maybe somebody else jumping up into into wearing one of
those those letters. Now that Luchenko has now been, you know,
out of that locker room.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
Well in the last little bit, it's been Luchenko and
Charlie Piquette as co captains. So Charlie started the season
as the captain. This was still while Jet was with
the Philadelphia Flyers organization, and the quote from Corey still
been the head coach, was we don't want to wait
for our captain to come back. We want to have

(20:00):
a captain to start the season because there's no guarantees
Luchenko is going to be back, so let's put the
sea on Charlie Piquette. And to be honest with you,
when Luchenko got the captain c last year, it was
either going to be him or Charlie. To be honest
with you, I really feel like Charlie has deserved this
honor to get the sea put onto his chest this year,

(20:20):
and when Jet came back, there was a quick conversation, Hey,
why don't we share the captaincy. So the two of
them were able to share the sea, and now it's
really with Luchenko gone down down the highway brand for
being super close to twelve. This is now Charlie Piquette's
team and he's going to take the ball and roll
with it.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
Nineteen points in twenty two games for Charlie Pockett now
is the only captain the Gulf Storm currently. I'd be
remiss if I didn't ask you Mark about the goaltending
here with the Gulf Storm And obviously Zach Jobanowski right
now and Colin Ellsworth, you know, those are the two
guys they have now. Jovinofsky starting Game two of the

(21:02):
CHL USA Prospects Challenge four team CHL So exciting for
that young man as well. But uh, you know what,
what are what is sort of the outlook for the
goaltending this year and going into next year.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
Well, I really feel like Zach Jovanovsky has an opportunity here.
Coming into the season, him and Elsworth were looked at
as kind of a one A one B kind of
situation and Corey Stillman just said, hey, someone take the
ball and roll with it. Who's going to be it?
Jovanovsky I really feel like has been that player to
to take the ball and really roll with it. The

(21:35):
goals against in the safe percentage. You're going to get
better once you start playing in playing in behind better
teams and more offensively minded teams and not having to
take as many shots. And I really feel like Jovanovsky
can really can really thrive in a situation like that.
This is a kid that he's he's not shaken by

(21:56):
the big moments. He He's going to have a big
moment obviously at the chl USA Prospects Challenge here, and
he's got an opportunity to get drafted into the National
Hockey League in twenty twenty five. He's the top rated
goaltender in the draft coming up in the Ontario Hockey
League and whoever ends up picking him or is going

(22:18):
to get a really good kid, and that is going
to help his development. Get him into an organization, and
you'll get to some goalie coaches at the National Hockey
League level that can take him to that next level,
and he can take that experience, like we see with
everybody that makes an NHL camp, whether it's a free
agent signing or whether it's getting drafted there, you know

(22:39):
they're able to take that experience, bring it down here
and do a phenomenal job and really take their game
to the next level. Colin Ellsworth excellent goaltender. He's going
to have his time. He's a laid o eight berth year,
so he doesn't have his draft year coming up until
twenty six. So actually twenty seven, now, if I do believe, yes,
twenty twenty seven for Colin Ellsworth, pardon me. And then

(23:02):
you look kruz Resnik. He is playing for the Air
Centennials in the Gohl ranks right now. So you have
three young goaltenders and Zach Jovanovski is the number one.
If he struggles, I mean, George Burnett's got a boatload
of picks to work with to maybe get a veteran
to shore that up in twenty twenty seven. But this
is Zach Jovanovski's time. This is his opportunity to say

(23:24):
when we host the Memorial Cup, I want to be
the number one, and he is going to fight tooth
and nail to make sure that stays that way.

Speaker 1 (23:31):
And a seventh round pick got to say, he's come
quite a long way. You expect, you know, the other
two or third round picks, But for Jovinofski to sort
of be that starter right now as a seventh round
pick with not as much expectation, you'd say that he's
definitely earned that role. And again, the golf starter is
gonna be making a lot of moves between now and
next season when they host the Memorial Cup and you know,
using some of that draft capital as you mentioned to

(23:53):
George Burnett's advantage going into the next season. But as
we wrap up with you mark, where you look at
the outlook of the Storm this season, pulling up the
standings again, you know, sitting where they are in the
Western Conference seventh place. You know, they know sort of
the long term play here is for that next season.
But what do you expect in here to see? And

(24:14):
what if you saw so far from the team eleven
eleven and two through twenty four games on the season,
and you know, I guess, just how do you expect
them to be going into the second half here?

Speaker 3 (24:26):
I mean, they're going to have their struggles. Let's be honest.
This is going to be a team that is building
towards twenty twenty seven. They might lose a couple more
pieces to get more draft capital. They might add who knows.
That's another thing that we haven't really thought of here too,
is that there's already enough in the draft capitol covered
where they might look at another team and see a young,

(24:46):
maybe seventeen eighteen year old kid and say, hey, let's
get you into the culture early on and perhaps get
you to know wealth before we go on the Memorial
Cup bids. That's a possibility here too, could play a
part into how this season ends up playing out. But
right as it stands, right now, it's a young, scrappy

(25:07):
team and they're gonna get in your face. And you know,
there's a lot of newer faces on this team over
the last over the last couple of months that have
really stood out. Ilias Shabinski is another key piece that
has really blossomed as a part of the top six. Yes,
he was lined up with jet Luchenko and Charlie Piquette.
With Luchenko gone, we'll see what happens with Shavinsky and

(25:29):
that and that because him and Luchenko were well, they're
like peanut, butter and jelly, particularly on that power play.
Parker Snell Grove, it, I mean, best face off guy
in the league, plain and simple, and I think That's
another thing that GWELF really looks at as a strength
is their face offs. I think they've been top five
all season and Parker snell Grove is a big part

(25:49):
of that. Same with Leo Serlin and his his game
has really developed nicely. But I think to really sum
it all up, it's a young, it's a scrappy team.
They are going to make you earn the two points.
There is gonna be some growing pains, but the growing
pains are gonna feel a whole lot nicer when twenty
twenty seven hits and that Memorial Cup is sitting at

(26:10):
the Sleeman Center and you have a chance to win.

Speaker 1 (26:12):
It couldn't have said it any better myself. Again, always
great analysis from Mark Perry, the color commentator for The
Golf Store on Rogers TV and news reporter for Gwelph Today.

Speaker 4 (26:22):
Mark, thanks a lot for coming back on.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
I know when the announcement happened, you said, hey, when
am I coming back on? And you've now made the
second appearance before some of my correspondence if even made one,
so you can you can take some pride in that
as well. But always appreciate the great insight on the
storm and look forward to chatting.

Speaker 4 (26:37):

As you can see on the screen, we had a
great conversation with Mark Perry about the Gulf Storm getting
the Memorial Cup in twenty twenty seven in the first
part of today's episode, and continuing on with our cochl theme,
please to welcome associate editor and prospect analyst of Daily Faceoff.
That would be Steven Ellis to discuss the COCHL USA
Prospects Challenge that wrapped up last night in Lethbridge and

(29:55):
Calgary the night before. Steven, thanks so much for coming
on today. Always great to have on talking the big
events around the the OHL.

Speaker 4 (30:02):
The chl and junior hockey as a whole.

Speaker 5 (30:05):
Yeah, thank you so much. And I also, because it's
the first time I've talked to you in a while,
I just want to say thank you to h Brad
Keselowski for not winning the last NASCAR race and hey,
who won the championship? Who won the NASCAR Cup Championship.

Speaker 4 (30:16):
Do you remember some guy that drives the five car?

Speaker 5 (30:19):
Yeah, yeah, that Kyle Larson guy.

Speaker 4 (30:21):
And I'm not the cars you got in the background,
I'm sure, but.

Speaker 5 (30:24):
I got a few of them.

Speaker 1 (30:25):
I got to get the championship one maw Hey, Brad
got passed on the final corner of the final app
would have been would have been nice. But anyways, we'll
save that for the NASCAR podcast. But anyways, Stephen, before
we get going, uh, I'm sure you probably had a
piece that you put out about the prospect challenge work
and where can people find what you've you've already done,
and then what you're going to be doing this week.

Speaker 5 (30:46):
Yeah. So I had a couple of features that went
up this week on Dailyfaceoff dot Com. I talked to
Ethan Belchiz for example the windsor Spitfires, and then I
did the top performers from each game and then one
that came out just a few few minutes ago. Look
at the top performers of the whole series, and I
think when it comes to this series, you know, it
was actually quite a good hockey. Like last year, it

(31:07):
was a bit of a blowout in the first game.
I think people kind of like, oh, this this is
going to get ugly. Everyone myself included, thought the NTDP
were going to lose, and they pulled it off. So
I'd say overall, it was a pretty good two days
of hockey.

Speaker 1 (31:20):
And before we get into that, do you have any
quick thoughts on the Gulf Storm winning the bid over
the Kitchener Rangers. I know for some people around the OHL,
at least media brass that there was Kitchener was the
favorite there. But I think GWELF, you know, with having
the downtown and the mall and everything like that, seems
like they really came together with a late push there

(31:40):
with the what the community aspect is. I know how
great the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium is, but what were your
general thoughts on it and how good do you think
Welf's going to be as a host next year?

Speaker 5 (31:49):
So it comes to Kitchener, I think there's so much
good food options there. You know, it was going to
be pretty exciting if we had that, like shout out
to Lancaster Smokeouse. But I think when it comes to GWELF,
it's nice to see a different team get it right.
Like Kitchener has held a lot of other events before.
They've hosted the CCHL Top Prospects or the OHL Top
Prospects Game a few years ago, and they're gonna be

(32:10):
hosting Canada at the World Junior pre Tournament. And I
think as a media guy, I can tell you Kitchener's
press box is really tiny. I haven't actually been to
Guelf yet. I've seen golf play a lot of times,
but never in Gwelf, so this will be my first
time going there. But it's kind of nice to just
see another city to get it. And I also like
that they've kind of adopted this mall rats persona. I
think that's awesome.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
Any thoughts on the OHL Live in person draft coming
back to Kingston next June.

Speaker 5 (32:35):
I always wanted that for years. I wanted that a
little too far from me to drive. I think that
I want to go to but I think being in
person again, I think is really cool. It's special for
the players, Like a lot of those guys will never
get drafted to the NHL, or they will get drafted
late on like day two, and no one's paying attention
to that point, so it's cool for them to get
this experience. We saw how cool it isn't the queue.

(32:57):
It's really nice to the OHL's finally doing it.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Absolutely so we'll we looked forward to that in June,
and we also got the OHL Top Prospects Game in
Peterborough coming up in January to look forward to. But Stephen,
what were your general thoughts on this new I guess
second year of the iteration of the UHL OHL Oh,
my goodness, the hl USA Prospects Challenge. Second year that
they've had this sort of two game tournament against the

(33:23):
United States national team development program. Last year was in London, Oshawa,
this year at Calgary Lethbridge. What were your general takeaways
from just the event as a whole. Do you think
it was better, do you think it was about the same,
or how do you think that they maybe should look
at getting some more attention on it going forward.

Speaker 5 (33:42):
I think it seemed to be really well received. I
think overall it was better hockey than we saw last year.
We just kind of saw the CHL take full control
pretty early on and didn't back down. I know the
NTVP did play a much better second game last year,
but it always felt like the CHL was in control
in this case, even though the CCHL out shot them
and had more high danger chances. You look at the
Americans and they were just the whole night. They were

(34:04):
just taking advantage of all the great opportunities. And you
look at the goaltending. The Americans got an outstanding goaltending
from the two games there. Brady Noling in particular was
incredible in Game one, and I feel like that was
so important for that NTDP because they've probably heard enough of,
oh yeah, this is not a good group, like this
is far from what we saw a few years agoing

(34:25):
out like the Ryan Leonards and the Will Smith's the world.
And then you see this team here with five wins
heading into this week, and then they go out there
and sweep well they shouldn't say they swiped this series,
but they won two of the three games, and I
think that just overall was really cool to see them
just come together and play as hard as I did.
I really they impressed me when I saw them at

(34:46):
the U eighteen five Nations a couple weeks ago in Slovakia,
and it feels like they're finally getting that momentum and
they're riding that wave that they've kind of lost since
losing someone like JP Hurlbert, who otherwise would have been
on that top line for that team.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
Do you think maybe the way that they lost last season,
maybe they took that as motivation coming in and putting
up a much stronger effort than maybe Team COHL had
given them credit for coming into this event.

Speaker 5 (35:12):
Yeah, Like I think you look at it and the
big excuse was like, oh, the CCHL only had like
two practice sessions, But that was the same thing last year, right,
So like it wasn't any different than it was the
year before. I guess the only big difference this time
was just that they they just didn't look cohesive at all.
They had a bunch of guys, like I think that
was a part of the issue with the Hollinggong Gretzky team,

(35:33):
where they have a lot of good players, they just
didn't seem to like work well together. So I do
think the most important part was the goaltending for the NTVP,
because you look and and pretty much across the board,
the NTDP goalies were the best parts of that team.
Like you look at last night and you see some
of the guys like Mikey Beerchild and some of these

(35:54):
players that are known more for being high end offensive threats,
and they weren't the ones producing. Yeah, Victor Plain did
score the two goals, but then you see aj Garcia
and you see Jimmy Glance, like those are not guys
that typically put up a ton of points in high motive,
our high energy situations. So I feel like just overall,
their depth was good and their goaltending was good, and

(36:15):
it was able to be enough to be a CCHL
team that is an all star team. But yeah, and
in the end, they are still just trying to figure
out how to play.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
Together and for the coaching staff too, like Willie Deser
Dan Jay McKee obviously fantastic coaches within their own leagues
and things like that, but when you only get players
for a day or one practice, one morning skate before
you have to play, like that can't be an easy
job to try to fit together a bunch of great
players into try to make them as a in that

(36:43):
team cohesion and try to figure out what line combinations
are going to work, what play styles are going to work,
and just try to figure out a system for guys
that are coming from all different shapes and sizes of
of junior hockey and within their own you know, I
guess comfort zones.

Speaker 5 (36:58):
Yeah, Like they announced their roster while ago, but there's
still a lot of different leagues that you're having to
kind of balance and being able to be like, Okay,
how will this guy fit with this guy? You look
like the Olympics, and they've got so much data on
these players that it's like they could probably literally just
use like an AI program to make the lines and
they'll be fine. But in the situation like this, like

(37:20):
it's a little more difficult. And the NTDP does have
like people when saying like this group's been together since
you know, the September, Well, they've been together since last season,
and a lot of these guys played together at things
like the eth Olympics and stuff like that, so these
guys know how to play together and that chemistry does
come a long way. I think if he saw a
seven game series. I think the CHL probably would have

(37:42):
taken control. But with the US, it's you got that
built in chemistry. It's so important and that's why they've
been so good at the World Juniors. It's these guys
that play together at so many different events, and Hockey
Canada is doing a really good job of getting players
to commit to the UA teams. Now, it felt like
that was always a bit more different cult getting these
really high end teams, but they've been really good the

(38:02):
last couple of years. But then you're getting guys who
have played together the U seventeen, TLANKA, U eighteens and
then the World Junior so they're getting that chemistry too.
But with the CHL these one off events, it is
hard to kind of be able to just gel quickly.

Speaker 1 (38:16):
And we saw that right out of the gate. The
US took the first game pretty handily, and then in
the second game they were up three to one, and
then Canada started the team CHL excuse me, started to
get there their legs under them. They scored two goals
in the second and then the goal in the third
to win the second game to force the super overtime. So,
as you mentioned, maybe as as it would have went on,
maybe Team CCHL would would have been able to compete

(38:38):
a little more as they they gained that chemistry. But
you know, what did you see from I guess going
into that super overtime one? Did you like the format
of just the sudden death three on three full twenty minutes?
You know, it was back and forth, you know, running
gun What were your thoughts on it? Then then the eventual
game winner by the United States.

Speaker 5 (38:57):
So the game ended after eleven fifteen pm Eastern, So
I wouldn't mind a shootout to decide that. But I
think being like that was an exciting overtime and I'm
glad they were able to kind of come up with,
Like I don't know what else they would have done
to other than just like, oh yeah we tied, no
winner like that that doesn't serve anything. So I'm glad
that they did have a way of kind of finishing it.

(39:18):
And I thought the format was cool. Like I think
three and three hockey is actually the best type of
hockey there is, and I know it's chaotic in the NHL.
You see like people say, like three or three hockey's
not great because look, the NHL players are slowing it
down like they're playing for shootout. But when you've got
something on the line, we've seen time after time, especially
at the junior level, whether it be the Lanka, whether
it be the World Juniors, you put three and three

(39:39):
with a championship on the line, they're going to go
all out the whole time and it makes for some
chaotic hockey and I love it. So I thought the
format overall is good. I know I remember last year
going from London to Oshawa and being like, man, that's
a pain in the ass of a drive. But I
didn't do it this time. But I know for a
lot of people trying to get into there was a

(40:00):
lot of weather issues and a lot of people had
their flights delayed. It was probably just happy it was
a short condensed a couple of days and they were
able to go home from there.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
Yeah, for sure, definitely sure for the people that made
the track for that one, but definitely probably well well
earned for them. But going into sort of the see
the Ohl part of it, and again Stephen eilis with
us a daily face off. When you look at the
the OHL players that were away at this events got

(40:28):
it pulling up on the screen here the whole roster,
but the the Ohl players are there in bold. I
know there's a couple of guys that you wanted to discuss,
you know, in depth, but you know, just in generality.
From the Ohl perspective, how do you think that they
fared in this tournament?

Speaker 4 (40:43):
Along with you know, j McKee being an assistant coach.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
I think it was a mixed bag. I think overall,
there was a few players you wanted to see a
bit more from. I was really actually happy of more
about how he played yesterday. But Alessandro Diorio just a
guy that's missed so much time this year due to
injury of Sarnia, and I thought he looked really good yesterday,
Like he showed why he could be a first round
player because he's very versatile. He could be a shooter,

(41:07):
but he could be tough. And then you know, you
look at someone like I thought Becam Edwards had a
good two way game. I thought to Nikkia Klepoff was
pretty good in the offensive zone. Joevenowski I thought looks
good yesterday. I know didn't come out with the win
in the third game, but I felt like after he
allowed that third goal, which to be fair, was like

(41:28):
a power play goal. I believe he was really able
to walk in and dial in, So I thought he
was good. And then you look at some of the
other guys here, like Jase Reedy, knew he was going
to be a top end guy to watch Belchit's the
same thing. So Caleb Mahultra I thought was probably the
CHL's best player. Like I say, overall, I was happy
for what I saw from a lot of guys. There
was a few players that I was hoping to see

(41:48):
a bit more from, uh specifically around Rubric, I was
kind of hoping to see a bit more from him.
But I'd say even Ethan Belchitz, I liked him, I
think more than some other people did because I still
like what he does away from the puck. I know
he didn't go out there and have any explosive games,
but I feel like he was very physical and then
TVP had a tough time dealing with him.

Speaker 1 (42:07):
Brooksburgowski was the only player that was named to the
tournament but was unable to play due to injury.

Speaker 4 (42:12):
You mentioned Caleb Malhotra.

Speaker 1 (42:15):
As the guy you really wanted to to hone in
on was named the captain of this team. And what
were your general thoughts on the now Branford Bulldogs. You know,
young player after that trade at last season, coming over
from the BCHL, drafted originally by Kingston, not signed. How
do you think he's been adjusting to his first OHL season?

(42:35):
And as well, how do you think that he played
in this little mini tournament.

Speaker 5 (42:39):
I know a lot of people heading into this were like,
can he go and escape the shadow of being on
a team that is as deep as the Bulldogs and
go out and shine? And I think he did. He's
he played on the power play, played on the penalty kill,
he scored a shorthanded goal, he made some outstanding pass.
It's like he's a high end playmaker and you watch
him and it's just like he's got so many different

(42:59):
tools in his tool belt. He's also got a good
frame too. He's six foot two and he's strong, and
his hockey sense is really impressive. He's good in the
Dot League. There are so many things he does well,
Like in a year where there's not a ton of
high end centers, I could see him going tenth to
eleventh or twelve in the draft type thing. I could
see him going as high as that, which not a
lot of people expected, but I think it's he's one

(43:20):
of those guys that is taking advantage of an opportunity
here where Okay, not a lot of middleman. I'm playing well,
I'm on a team that's getting a lot of attention.
Let's see what's gonna happen. I'm gonna be able to
see Branford for the first time this season on Friday
when they play Brampton, So I'm looking forward to seeing
kind of just how dominant this team can be. But
when it comes to mahol tro I just think just

(43:40):
every both games, he was noticeable at both ends of
the ice. Is a really good two hundred foot player,
and I think you gotta love what he's doing right now.

Speaker 1 (43:48):
Chase Reid probably a little bit weird for him being
an American kid and playing for Team HL against an
American team. You know, he was a mid round pick,
but that's mostly because of him being committed to n
C Double A before the ruling had had changed this
last season. So he's come in to the Sue Greyhounds,
done a fantastic job for a team that you know,
looks like they're gonna be taking.

Speaker 4 (44:09):
A step forward.

Speaker 1 (44:09):
What did you what did you see from Sue Greyhounds
defenseman Chase Reid in this two game tournament.

Speaker 5 (44:14):
Well, Greyhounds just got Colin Fitzgerald and that's that's gonna
make them look very dangerous. So good for them on
that With Chase Reid. I was talking to some people
before this series and thought, yeah, Chase Reid could go
in the top three of the draft. I'm like, whoa, Okay,
let's let's let's get a closer look. And he was
not my favorite defenseman, but consistently I really liked what

(44:36):
he did. He scored that really nice goal in the
first game. I thought he was always engaged with the puck.
He served as a four to forward a lot, and
just you see a lot of traits where it's like
it feels like he's not even fully close to being
fully developed. It feels like his game because he kind
of had a bit of a weird start last year
where he wasn't good in the USHL. He was good

(44:57):
in the NA or what they dude, sorry, didn't even
make the USHL to the NAHL, and then went to
the OHL and played really well. It feels like he
had some time to catch up here and it looks
like he's just playing with so much confidence. He's so
so dynamic, he could do so many things really, really well.
And I thought he was probably the CHL's best defenseman
overall defenseman in the first game. I thought Carson Carroll's

(45:19):
was probably better defensively, But with Chase Reid, like, I
see a guy who could go in the top five
of the draft, especially if teams are a little worried
about someone like ivers Stenberg not being very big. I
think Chase Reid at six foot two and his mobility
is going to excite teams a lot.

Speaker 1 (45:35):
Other than Becam Edwards and Zach Jovanovski, all the Ohlers
that were at this Prospect Challenge were a grades in
the upcoming or for Central Scouting in the most recent list, Steven,
do you think again, like it's hard to gauge what
something like this small sample size of if it can rise,

(45:57):
you can rise or fall in anything like this, It
just gives a lot of opportunity for different scouts to
be able to see guys maybe for the first time
that don't get the opportunity to go down to all
the different junior rinks. So do you think that there
was anybody that from something like this that can have
their draft stock be changed in any way, or when

(46:17):
it comes to these these tournaments, like how much of
a sample size and how much of a grain of
salt you have to take with this.

Speaker 5 (46:23):
I think there's a couple of things you could look
at here. For one, it's more about seeing how players
shine against other players, like other top end players, and
if someone is completely invisible, I think that's a concern.
But then you look at other situations where it's like
it is only a two game sample size, right, Like
it's not a big one, it's not going to change anything.
I do think a lot of scouts came away looking

(46:44):
at Ryan Rubik and thought this might not be a
first round player anymore. And I think that's just a
bit of a disappointment because he has been so good
and there are some people thought he'd be top five
heading into the season, but it just felt like he
was invisible. And that has been a case a lot
of situations this year. I think, uh, who's I'm trying
to think of who would be another good one. I
think Chase Reed also really kind of established himself as

(47:06):
a guy that if you weren't looking at him as
a top five player, I think you are now. And
then Diorio, I think is another one, just because there
hasn't been many games that he's played this year, Like
this was like essentially a quarter of what he's done
already this year. I think people come away and say, yeah,
like he's he's always impacting big games, whether it be
you know, callingkther be the UA teams. He always seems

(47:27):
to be involved in big games and making an impact.
So I think he's gonna turn some heads.

Speaker 1 (47:33):
And then as we go forward, I heard the TSN
broadcast sort of talking about next year going to be
in the queue and then maybe going forward this tournament
could go down south with the United States hosting it.
One do you like that idea? And two is there
anything specific that you think? You know, it's been a
success the first two years for sure, but is there
anything else that maybe you'd like to see added or
just maybe extra coverage or maybe an extra day for

(47:56):
more media availability or things like that, Like, is there
anything that that you can specifically say going into next
year's installment or going forward that you'd like to see Last.

Speaker 5 (48:05):
Year I would have said, like I wish it was
all draft eligible players because you look in like a
lot of the college teams aren't playing right now like
you could have in theory, said Gavin McKenna and Keaton
Veryhawk com play. But then what do they play for
the NTDP, Like, I think there's a couple of things
where the format could see some interesting tweaks, But I
think what we saw this week is that the formula

(48:26):
is working right now. It is very exciting hockey where
the NTDP, Like I think you look at USA Hockey
and you look at the ntdps the one that gets
all the love, right, but then their B team, including
a couple of guys that were in this game, like
Nikita Klubof went out there and just won the the

(48:46):
Helena Gretzky a few months ago, and I feel like
those players still get ignored a little bit and the
NTDP gets all the preferential treatment. But in theory, the
NTDP is supposed to be the best of the best.
I will say that in two years, because the way
it works is the NTDP does have the option to
host in that fourth year. From what I've been told,
the team that will be there, which will be the

(49:09):
U sixteen guys. Right now, be you a team by
then is going to be a very strong team. If
that is the case, I think the NTDP is going
to really want to host that event. But it'll be
interesting to just kind of see how the pendulum swings.
I think right now it is a tougher time for
the NTDP, to the point where people are wondering are
they going to move to the CHL and be a
full time CHL team at some point. It'll be interesting

(49:31):
to see if that happens. But right now, I don't
like I feel less concerned about the series viability now
than I did a year ago, and I think that's
because what we saw the NTDP just battle so hard.
I think now they're gonna be more prepared because now
they can't justly know where these we know these we
know how to play together. Now they have to actually
work a little harder, and I feel like they prove

(49:53):
that in this series. So I'd say right now, I
wouldn't change anything other than if it is in the
United States. I do hope they put in Plymouth because
I think everyone needs to try Detroit Stopizza when they
get a chance.

Speaker 1 (50:05):
And former Plymouth Whalers arena as well. Former CHL team
now in Flint. But any final thoughts on the CHL side, Stephen, Like, again,
when you're in the middle of the season, you know
you're you're playing for your club team up until Sunday,
and then you got to leave for this tournament, it's
not an easy thing. You maybe maybe like to see
a couple extra days for the guys to get to

(50:26):
get acquainted. Maybe the their league teams and maybe the
leagues in general take a few extra days off just
to compensate for those players leaving. Like, is there anything
else from the CHL side when you're trying to combine
three leagues into one that the that you think that
from their perspective could help.

Speaker 5 (50:44):
It's tough because, like you mentioned, like like the other
there's other teams. The rest of the CHL is playing still,
and I feel bad for those teams missing those guys,
especially if there is a chance, like in the case
for the Armadel the QGHL, where they might lose Xavier
for the World Juniors and if that happens, like that's
that feels pretty difficult. I think for some of those

(51:06):
teams to be like, oh well, we got to keep
giving up these guys for a long period of time.
So I feel like if there were no other teams
playing and they could put the full focus on this,
that would be nice. Like it almost feels like knowing
the NHL schedule, I wish the one game was Tuesday
and then the second game was Thursday for Thanksgiving, And
I think part of that would be cool for TVP,

(51:27):
but part of it would also mean there was no
other hockey being played, like last night in the NHL
there were thirty teams playing. I feel like it's hard
to get fully interested. Like I noticed the social media
engagement on the first game being a lot bigger than
the second game, and I think part of that is
because the fans had nothing else to watch on that
outside of the Oilers game that was a blowout on
the Tuesday. On Thursday, they had It's a different situation

(51:50):
here where early Wednesday, sorry, where every team was playing
and you could watch your favorite team. So I feel
like I don't know if I would make it longer
or shorter. I always feel like I feel like it's
a fine length, but yeah, it does feel like the
CHL probably needs an extra practice or to just gage
to each other.

Speaker 1 (52:05):
And maybe one maybe the one game could be on
American Thanksgiving in the United States. I think that would
be That'd be interesting too, to see what kind of
crowd they could get on a national holiday. Maybe a
home and home type series going forward with that extra
day for travel and things like that in between. But
we'll have to wait and see how this tournament goes
going forward. But the second second installment of it in

(52:27):
this sort of format, I think was another success. Again,
a lot more competitive than it was last season, but
again Steven ellis associate editor and a prospect analyst of
Daily Faceoff. Stephen, thanks so much for coming on and
giving your quick thoughts and analysis on the chl USA
Prospects Challenge this season. And yes, congratulations to your boy
Kyle Larson for winning the NASCAR Championship.

Speaker 5 (52:49):
Yeah, you know one I would say, one day you'll
get to see Kazloski winning the championship, but I really
doubt it. Actually, I'm sorry to say you that. I
will say I want Kezlowski to win that championship so
bad the year he did, because it was so cool
that he went from basically infinity to like the lower
end Penske ride to winning a championship. So quickly, and
I would have assumed you would have had more championships

(53:11):
by now.

Speaker 1 (53:11):
I'm going to take a quote and just say I
don't instead of I want to win a game, I'm
just waiting for him to win another race, let alone
a championship. So anyways, we'll save that for the NASCAR talk.
But that's going to wrap it up for another entertaining episode.
