(00:00):
Thanks for joining me today Investor Ideasdot com cleantech and climate change podcast looking
at today's problems and solutions for thefuture. I'm your host Don van Zandt,
founder of investor Ideas dot com andhoping to share our way of making
a difference in climate change. Goodmorning. Today, we're looking at recent
news and developments in fuel cell electricvehicles FCVs. Is this the new hype
(00:22):
to take investors down a green highwayof the future. There are a lot
of questions to be asked and answeredabout fuel cell vehicles, just like there
are unresolved issues with electric vehicles, such as what is the infrastructure plan?
What is the long term cost tothe environment, what is the human cost?
Like we recently learned about with EVbatteries in the disturbing Truth Exposed in
(00:44):
Cobalt read how the Blood of theCongo powers are Lives by Sidhartha Kara,
What is the life of the vehicle? There are some really good articles out
there comparing evs or b evs andFCVs and what the real environmental impact is.
Genesis Energy breaks it down saying overallhydrogen FCEVs are lower in total emissions
(01:06):
than b evs, if green hydrogenis used. Fuel cells are one hundred
percent recyclable and renewable, whereas thelithium ion batteries used in BEVs may present,
we know they do recycling challenges atthe end of their life span.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element inthe universe, and it's plentiful and renewable
(01:26):
source of energy. A hydrogen FCEVtypically has a range of over five hundred
kilometers from each tank, with newmodels in development that will reportedly have ranges
up to eight hundred kilometers. BallardPower Systems, trading on the NASDAC BLDP
and on the TSX BLDP, announcedyesterday the signing of a letter of intent
with Ford Trucks to supply a fuelcell system as part of the development of
(01:49):
a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle prototype. Investors reacted in the stock gained over
seven percent during the trading day.The partnership includes an initial will purchase order
for two FC move XD one hundredand twenty kilowatt fuel cell engines that are
planned to be delivered by Ballard twoFord in twenty twenty three. Ford Trucks
(02:10):
plans to develop a fuel cell electricvehicle FCV f MAX. As part of
the project, thee hundred and twentykilowatt fc move XD fuel cell engines are
planned to be integrated into Ford TrucksFmax forty four ton long haul tractor truck.
Ford Trucks plans to build and assemblethe fuel cell powered Fmax in Turkey
(02:31):
and aims to commence European ten Tcorridor demonstrations in twenty twenty five. Is
part of the European Union's Horizon EuropeZFS. The Zero Emission Freight Ecosystem project
goals. As per the Letter ofintent, upon the successful completion of the
development project and subject to certain otherconditions, Ballard may be named as the
(02:53):
preferred supplier of the serial production ofthe fuel cell powered Fmax. In the
project, four trucks OEMs, twotrailer OEMs, suppliers, logistic operators and
research partners will work together toward theoverall goal of accelerating the integration of zvs
for long distance heavy transport. Thiswork plans to focus on efficiency improvements,
(03:17):
mass production capabilities, and demonstrating theuse of technologies in daily operations. In
twenty twenty five, nine different vehicleconcepts, four FCVs and five b evs
are expected to run over one millionkilometers across EU corridors in real daily operations,
(03:38):
guided and validated by a digital platformto be developed within the project.
This project is expected to be asignificant step forward for zv adaption in the
freight transport system. Vehicles are expectedto carry over forty tons for distances of
up to seven hundred and fifty kilometers, averaging five hundred kilometers in a daily
(04:00):
operation. Earlier this week, NicolaCorporation, trading on the nasdec D KLA,
a leader in zero emission transportation andenergy supply and infrastructure solutions via the
Hilo brand HYLA, announced that Nicolaand its dealer network with most of the
agreements between fleets and dealers directly, have surpassed two hundred sales orders for the
(04:21):
class eight Nicola Hydrogen fuel cell electricvehicles. The two hundred and two sales
orders for the purpose built heavy dutytrucks represent eighteen end customers. Nicola Hydrogen
fuel cell electric trucks recently started seriesproduction in the Coolidge, Arizona Manufacturing facility.
Deliveries are expected to begin later thisyear following the satisfactory completion of a
(04:46):
demonstration program, and last week Stlantis, trading on the NYSE STLA, confirmed
it has completed its thirty three pointthree percent purchase in Symbio, a leader
in zero emission hydrogen mobile four VIIaand Michelin are also equal shareholders. The
announcement is a significant step in thedecarbonization of the mobility industry and illustrate Symbio's
(05:11):
technological excellence in hydrogen fuel cell innovations. The additions of Stilantis as a shareholder
will boost Symbio's development across Europe andin the US. Acquiring an equal stake
in Symbio bolsters stilantis leadership position inhydrogen powered vehicles by supporting the fuel cell
van production in France, and italso serves as a perfect complement to the
(05:33):
company's growing battery electric vehicle portfolio. In mid July, it was reported that
Edmonton International Airport YEG said that onehundred Toyota hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles FCEVs
would soon be on Alberta's roadways andthanks to an innovative partnership with Toyota Canada,
(05:55):
this initiative would reduce carbon emissions andcontribute to yeg's goal of being net
zero by twenty forty as a keydevelopment in Alberta's clean puel journey. They
say this will be the first fleetof hydrogen powered zero mission vehicles in Alberta.
So, bottom line, innovation doesa bound and there are opportunities for
(06:15):
investors. But this is still anemerging industry and just like we look back
at the ev industry, we learneda lesson a lot of lessons along the
way, and we don't always gettold the real story when governments and big
corporations are pushing an agenda. Sobecome an educated consumer and an educated investor.
As you follow these highways of thefuture, you owe it to the
(06:36):
generations to come. That's it fortoday. Do something great for this beautiful
planet each and every day. Tohear more clean tech podcasts, visit the
