Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon, Welcome on the Culture News.
My name is David Cerebro, and I have the pleasure
to have today on iHeart reading on the Culture News
a wonderful, wonderful director, actor and producer. His name, ladies
and gentlemen, is Garrett Penn and Garrett Payne and wonderful, wonderful,
(00:21):
wonderful artist. His last name is spelled Pawte, and he
has released a wonderful new film which he calls a
Bitcoin thriller, and the name of that film is called
Self Custody. We're going to talk about all of that.
This is a wonderful, wonderful person. Garrett Payne and Garrett,
(00:43):
how are you today.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Ray, David, Yeah, thank thank you for having me on.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
It's really an honor to have you. Thank you so
much for being with us. So the first question I
have for you, can you please introduce yourself? Tell us
who are you and how did you start in that industry?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, well, you know, I've so. My name is Garrett Patten.
I've a producer, director, actor. I've had my hands in
films since I was a little kid. But I went
to the University of Southern California. And from there I started,
you know, executive producing a bunch of projects, and then
I eventually got into.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Directing and producing.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
And yeah, I've been involved with fourteen or fifteen projects
now and the current one, self Custody, is just it's
a story that was so near and dear to me that, you.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Know, I just felt compelled to tell it. And I'll
give you all the history on that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
For sure, we really really would love to know because
you call it a bitcoin thriller. Tell us first of all,
what is a bitcoin thriller?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
H Yeah, Well, a lot of people don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
But in the in the crypto world, two hundred billion
dollars worth of crypto and bitcoin has been lost or
stolen beyond recovery.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
So when you think about the magnitude.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
Of that, and I think that's almost like twenty percent
of all bitcoin has been unrecoverable.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
And so there's all these stories out there of.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Where people and a lot of it is because people
lose their seed phrases or their pin code, which is
how you access the bitcoin. And so for instance, if
you had x million in bitcoin and something happened to
you and your wife or girlfriend didn't know, your seed
phrases or your pin code, it's gone.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
It's lost, and there's a lot of theft.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
But so the way bitcoin works is you take you
could either take it into online custody or self custody.
And what this movie is about self custody, which basically
means that you have your bitcoin stored, your seed phrases
at home on a hard drive, and if something happens
to those combinations of the pin code and the seed phrases,
(02:52):
it is gone forever. So there's all these stories out
there people that have lost access, and you know, the
same thing that makes people excited about being responsible the
custodian of their money is the same thing that also
puts it at risk. You know a lot of people
that's what it's been. What they like about it is
there isn't a bank, there isn't a middleman, there's nobody
(03:13):
else watching their money.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
It's their money.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
But on the same hand, if you lose access to
that money, you got a big problem.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
I agree with you. It's so easy, you know, to
we just grabbed the password and that's it. You know,
it's just such an easy robbery. And I'm so glad
that you're bringing awareness to these wonderful I think it's
a new genre that you even created there, you know,
Bigcoin three their self Custody. So who are the actors
because I recognize a very familiar face.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, obviously Henry su Hudo is in it, who's an
Olympic gold medalist, a two time UFC champ, and it's
his first time acting and he's in an amazing fight scene.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
He does an incredible job.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Adrian Grenier, who was most famous for playing Vinnie Chase
and Entourage, Uh, he isn't it. He's he was in
The Devil's We're Proud, a whole bunch of other movies too,
but Adrian's.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
And Adrian and Henry are good friends.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
We have lots of other projects going between the three
of us. And yeah, and then Odet Annabel who she's
a fantastic, fantastic actress as well.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
So we have a great.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Cast and uh, you know, just really excited to share
this story with everybody, and we.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Are so glad to hear about this story. Congratulations, we
have uh today Garrett Pattern, the director, lead actor, and
creator of this great new film called SEF Custody a
Bitcoin thread. What do you hope a wish that people
(04:49):
would take away with them once they have watched this
great new film. Sef Custody.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, well, I would like to point out one thing
that it's all inspired off a true story. So the
story that you will watch is based off of something
that happened to somebody that I know or he was
on financial ruin and he had access to bitcoin that
he had from years ago, but he couldn't get into
it and it and it drove him absolutely mad.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
And the chase that he went on to try to
get it back.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
But you know, I guess what I'd like people to
take away from it is, you know, like I said before,
what attracts people to the bitcoin community is also something
that's very scary to a lot of people. And it's
it's like a it's a modern day bank robbery. You know,
if somebody gets your seed phrases or they get your
pin code, it's gone and that and that's the chase,
(05:38):
and it's inspired off of true stories.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
It's there.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
There's these firms that are out there that that claim
to recover your your lost bitcoin, but most of them
are scams and the FBI has been shutting them down.
And it's it's it's like the wild West out there
with with bitcoin. But that's also what attracts people to it.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
And indeed, many people would rush to watch this film.
So where this team has been screened already and what
do you think would be his future?
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Yeah, So we're actually streaming right now on Amazon Prime
to be and Plex. We had a screening at sun Dance,
we had a screening at south By Southwest. We're also
in a couple more festivals coming up in the near future.
And look, we're looking to expand we're looking to take
(06:27):
this film into We're talking to showrunners and we're also
talking to other spinoff features that would be great as well.
But yeah, we have a lot of plans and a
lot of discussions to really really grow on this concept.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Well, for sure, you can count on us to support
you and to applaud you for these wonderful new work
that you are doing. Before we start to say goodbye
to each other, what are your personal I should say
projects in the future.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Jeez ye, I got a lot going on.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
I'm actually in the middle of putting putting together a
Mike Tyson biopic, which I've been working on for a
couple of years. I'm working on a spin off of
a story about the Grateful Dead called Growing Up Dead,
which is kind of easy. You see the story of
the band through the through the eyes of the children.
(07:21):
I have another thriller that I'm in the middle of
that's more of an AI generated thriller called forty eight Hours.
So I have three three exciting projects that I'm in
the middle of that hopefully you'll be being shot this
year and released in the next couple of years.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
Well, don't hesitate to tell us about that Tyson biopig,
you know, I would love to. You know, I met
him a long time ago and he's the sweetest guy
in the world who was invited at his place and
I filmed him for a project. He's the kindest man
ever and he truly deserves your treatment of a biopig
(07:59):
for We're so glad to have you. And definitely don't
hesitate to let us know about your upcoming project. Ladies
and gentlemen, My name is David So we were had
