Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ladies and chentlemen. Good afternoon. Welcome on the Culture News.
My name is David, So we ruin have the pleasure
to have today on iHeartRadio on the Culture News. A wonderful,
wonderful person. His name is Mikey Tableman. He's an entrepreneur
and a story teller. Will love that. But he's also

(00:20):
very known for being the founder of the mental health
media organization called A Mind's Pursuit. That's a beautiful title.
He prides himself on using his voice to make a
difference as an advocate. After years of struggles with addiction, suicide,
and depression, He's bounced back to share these story in

(00:42):
hopes of changing the perception around men seeking the help
they need without the stigmas attached. We really really love that.
He has also a podcast. He has been the co
host of this mental health podcast called Chaos Controlled Jumping.
Now they just finish actually the third season. We are

(01:04):
so happy to have him today, the one and on
invest Mikey Tableman. Mikey, how are you today?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I'm doing very well.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I need you to follow me around and introduce you
like that everywhere.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
That was awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Well, listen, it really went from my heart, you know,
because I really admire you and appreciate all the great
things you do, and you are so creative and everything
you do.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
So really congratulations for all your wonderful work. So can
you thank you? I did introduce you, but can you
please introduce yourself from your own words, like who are you?
But also what brought you to be who you are today?
Which is the founder of the Mental Health Media Organization

(01:49):
of course.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
So my names Mikey Tailman. I'm born and raised in Queens,
New York. I'm currently living out in Orange County, California.
I actually how I got here? Was it just this
kind of happened. I moved out to LA around fifteen
years ago to be an actor. I've always loved theater, film, TV,
always been so fascinated by it, so I moved out

(02:11):
here with the concept of pursuing that passion. I did
a couple of TV shows, a couple of indie movies, things.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Along those lines.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
But when you move, when you're trying in that career,
you have to figure out ways to work at night
to pay your bills so you can audition during the day.
So I happened to bartend for quite a long time.
When I moved out to Los Angeles, I actually was
able to get myself working with some of the biggest
hospitality companies in the world, bartending and some of the

(02:40):
hottest nightclubs that you would see on TMZ, being around
all these celebrities and everything. And when in that it
kind of happened all kind of quickly, how I just
moved up the ranks of hospitality. And I never meant to.
Like everything that's happened in my life, it'd all just
kind of unfolded in a divine way. So I never
meant to move up the ranks so quick in hospitletality,
but come with came with that was a lot of stress,

(03:03):
a lot of pressure. Looking really cool on like a
highlight reel of all the places I was, the things
I was doing where I was then running events at
Sunday and It's at the super Bowl, I was at
the Playboy mentioned, I was throwing all the maximum Hot
one hundred parties. I was running all of the v
VIP services for all massive music festivals like Coachella and
DC and things along those lines. And it looked amazing,

(03:27):
But I actually burnt out very quickly and that's what
led to this severe drug addiction. That's what led to
the press. That's what you know, really piggybacked a lot
of the depression. That's what led to the suicide attempt.
And when COVID happened, you know, everything stopped for a
while and I realized, like this wasn't fulfilling and I
wanted to do something more, And I realized I had
to go through all that. I truly believe I how

(03:49):
to go through all that for a reason. Otherwise I'd
be really mad at God in the world of like
why did that all have to happen to me? So
I took that kind of concept and I turned it
into a mind's pursuit and the different pillars and things
that we have going on now.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
And thank you so much for being so candid about
about your path and for sharing your beautiful story. And
this is also you're the perfect example of someone who
you know went down you know, if you allow me
to say it that way, but you used his experience

(04:24):
to help others, you know, And this is where you
know that the help that you're giving is so genuine.
You know what I mean, because you've been there. You know,
if you wan't teach violent and you never touch the
violin in your life, you know what I mean? How
can you do that? But you know how it feels.

(04:45):
And I've seen all the things you've done, not everything everything,
of course, but I've seen a lot of your podcast
and all the things you do, and when you talk,
you know what you mean because you can say, hey, guys,
don't you know it's a okay to make mistakes and
it's okay to go the wrong way, but let me

(05:06):
tell you how to go back to the right way
because I've done that path. I know the road to
the right way. And this is so incredible. You know,
you have all my support and admiration. So what do
you think is the most the misconception that people have

(05:28):
about mental health? Especially for men? You know, because I
remember when I had days I was like, oh, man,
I'm not feeling good. You know, my friends were like, oh,
come on, man, be a man, you know, be you know. So,
what do you think is the biggest misconception when it's

(05:48):
about mental health? Man?

Speaker 2 (05:51):
I think that's such a layered question, and I think
there are so many misconceptions, but I think the biggest
one when it comes to men's cifically is that you
know you hear, oh you know you're men don't struggle
with it. And it's like I've heard that so many times.
It's like, oh, just be a man. Why you being
you know, why you being a little girl about it.
It's like, man, we all struggle too. We all have

(06:12):
our down moments, and there is this societal standard of
as a man, you're only allowed to show this emotion
of anger and if you don't, you looked down upon
and you're not a strong man in society. And it's
like that has caused more downfall because there are so
many guys that are just sucking it up and that
are so unhappy and are so miserable. But we don't

(06:35):
have a choice and just have to kind of push
through life that way. And it's like, no, we can
talk about what we're going through. We do have the
ability to open up.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yo.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Your feelings are real and they are valid, and you
don't have to pretend like they don't exist. You're allowed
to have these emotions of hurt and pain and sorrow.
And you know, just because you're carrying it all doesn't
mean that it's not heavy.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Oh my god, I love what you say, can you
repeat that phrase?

Speaker 2 (06:59):
It's not to just just because you're carrying it all
doesn't mean that it's not heavy.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Oh my god, I love that. I really really love that.
Thank you so much for sharing that. Just want to
spell your last name table? Man is table and man
you know, very remember, very simple to tell me? Oh, well,
I tried different spelling. I couldn't find it, So now
I spell first and last names. So so what is

(07:27):
before we start to talk about actually, let's talk about
your book now and your spoken word EP my manique maze?
Can you tell us first of all, what does it
mean my manic maze? And and also what isn't that book?
What can we find in it?

Speaker 2 (07:48):
So My Maic Maze drops in July tenth, both the
book and the album. My magic Maze is my own
is my specific story. So the first thing I was
ever diagnosed with as a child, actually as like a
you know, an adult teenager, was a manic disorder. And
my whole entire mental health journey is felt like a
maze of walking through, bumping into walls, not knowing which

(08:11):
way to go, thinking I'm on the right path, being
turned back around, starting back from the beginning and just
having the frustration of I have no idea what I'm doing.
So my Manic Maze is my whole story of my
journey of everything that I have been diagnosed with throughout
the last fifteen years of my life and the dark
struggles that it's been through. So I felt I was

(08:31):
able to figure out that I was able to write
poetry because this is a new thing for me. I've
only been writing spoken word and performing spoken word poetry
for the last five years, but I guess all the
training I had as an actor really helped and come
and came into play here. So for me, it's my
version of healing. I was able to write the things
that I was feeling in ways that you know, you

(08:52):
can't explain regularly through the art of you know, similarly,
metaphors and a flow, and it was much easier for
me to get out what I was going through. So
My Magic Maze takes you basically through how my manic
disorder turned, you know, of offset my ADHD, How the
ADHD creating the anxiety, How the anxiety led to the depression,
how the depression led to the depression led to the

(09:14):
imposter systrome, How the imposter syndrome led to the suicide attempt,
how the suicide attempt was offset by the addiction, and
then all the things that I've learned from it, and
how I'm still picking myself up and battling it every day.
So it's kind of like a pseudo It's a poetry
book with a pseudo memoir. So every chapter opens up
with the poem, and then I explain in deepthly on

(09:37):
what I was going through in those moments and what
some of these things mean and actually came from. I'd
be out and performing and so many people would be like, yo,
you found the words that I couldn't that I couldn't say.
I wish I had your writings, you know, when I'm
going through a hard time, so I could reflect on it.
So I figured, well, instead of just putting the poem itself,
why not share my actual story and the things that

(09:59):
I went through.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
So it gives people more things to relate to.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
And we love that, and we definitely encourage everyone to
get that wonderful book that is coming this summer, My
Manic Maze.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
We love that, My Manic Maze. You taught me two
new words in English, maniq and maze. I didn't know
what its I know, so thank you, thank you, and
of course you know, thank you for doing a spoken
word epy to do an not your book. But it's
way more than a note your book, you know, and
this is also an art form on its own. And

(10:37):
also it works so well with the poetry that you
are adding to it. I want to say that you
have a website that is called a minds Pursuit that Org,
which is the name of your mental health media organization,
A Mind's Pursuit that or beautiful website. I encourage everyone

(10:59):
definitely to go there. You stay, have two minutes. What
would you like to say to our audience before we
say goodbye to each other.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
You know, if you are anybody who's struggling, please find
our website reach out. There are so many people out there.
You're not alone in your struggles. It is completely normal
and valid. You are. You are a spiritual being having
a human experience, and it is very human to feel
all these emotions. Take a look out for my Manic
Made shop dropping July tenth, the album in the book,
and then also I have a new show coming out
