Speaker 1 (00:00):
I love the room. Second, welcome back to the master.
The music today is Elex Warren, something you haven't played before. Now.
Anna Ramsey joins us next from Dairy and Z and
a good afternoon hell Saints.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hi Andrew, I'm good. Thanks.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
How are you can't really complying this hamp die way?
Here's the yea gone. I know, I know, darien Z
quite a bit happening at the moment, especially something relevant
for a lot of farmers, especially if you're on crop
is off crop transitioning as you get ready for calving.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yes, absolutely, yes, So at this time of year of
farmers are thinking about, if not already into the transition period.
So the transition period, we're really talking about the three
weeks pre calving and the three weeks post calving, and
this is an absolute crucial period for cows leading up
to calving, and and asked that it's too and it
is important that we get the feed requirements spot on

(01:01):
at this time to set the map cirts extensful having
and and ultimately a successful lactation season two. The transition
period is probably the busiest time of year on farms
and there is a lot to think about, but it's
really important not to overcomplicate it, and there is a
lot of information out there and everyone will have their
own strategies to suit their system, but definitely pre planning

(01:23):
and following some simple steps can make it a real success.
There are some key points to consider prior to planning
the hard diet over this period, as it definitely isn't
a one size fits all scenarios. The first step prior
to feed planning is identifying individual cows body condition score
and separating them into mobs accordingly, I really cow should

(01:45):
be separated between those that are over and under five
body condition score units. The cows that are under five
should be fed one hundred percent of the renady requirements biles.
Cows that are over five should be restricted to ninety
percent of their energy requirements. It is also important to
identify those cows that are below four units been over six,

(02:08):
as these cows at the higher risk of being predisposed
to infectious and metabolic diseases. Ideally, they should be in
their own mobs to be monitored or at least identified
and recorded on a list to be checked closer than
the rest of the herd so that any issues can
be picked up early. It is also very important that
the transition of a diet from their winter feed to

(02:31):
their diet post calving is done as gradually. The stomach
of the cow is really complex and actually needs at
least three weeks to fully adapt to a diet change,
and sudden diet changes can really have a negative knock
on effect to them. If cows are on crops, it
is crucial to allow time to transition off the crops
and basically reverse the process of transitioning on. I know

(02:53):
farmers are great and transitioning onto crops, but it is
easy to forget that they need to have this done
at the tail end too, So just be aware of
the volume of crops left available and the timings before calving.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Now, events coming up, Deary and zaid, there is always
something on the horizon. What's on the what we got playing, Danna?

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Yeah, yep. So we've got two upcoming events and these
are off paddic infrastructure events. Two events one the sixteenth
of July in western Southland near a Toutou hosted at
Grant's and Janine Dixon, and then the second one is
on the twenty third of July in eastern Southland hosted
at the Warnick family farm and also at Jimmy and

(03:32):
Louise Purdons farm too at Makatua. Both these firms include
tours of their ath paddic infrastructure which includes BArch hip pads,
late explored head homes and straw cabin barnes too, with
a mixture of open aired pads and ones with roofs
as well.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
So a good chance to go and have a look
at some infrastructure exactly.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, but a perfect time to year to actually get
out and see them because they're all currently in use,
so it's good time to see them in action.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
So in ZID if people wanted to find out more
about stuff as far as events and what do they.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Do, Yeah, so check out our website. There's listed at
each event what infrastructure they have. If you can register,
we would recommend it, but also just turn up on
the day and also just really important to check out
our transition feeding tools and resources we have available on
the website. Have you read of them before before you get.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
