Speaker 1 (00:10):
This says the muster on Hoka Neui.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're away to bend more of this afternoon Brenton Howden
farming over that way, sheep beef operation.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
How do you good?

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Afternoon ground conditions over in central Southland?

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Good andy. Ground conditions stood, not too bad. We've got
a bit of breeze the last week, trying things up slowly,
but sure enough we'll get another storm at some stage
it'll soak it up again.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
How have you coped over there compared to say, the
last four or five July?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Though, it's every year is different, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah, you know last year was pretty dry too. It
was just a bit colder. Yeah, yeah, it was a
bit of rain. But it's been in short bursts and
it's yeah, pretty kind really can't complain.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
So generally you've coped pretty well with winter.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah, we've got through pretty well.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah. Looks it's scanning and the likes. That's been the
big topic for a lot of people. Scanting's coming up shortly.
A lot of people having issues of too many triplets.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Oh, I haven't had that issue this year year. No,
I'm back about five or six percent, but it's all triplets.
It's yeah, if you work it out as a short skin,
it's well, I'm exactly the same. But yeah, instead of
having normally get about three fifty four hundred triplets, I've
only had about one hundred and forty. So it's not
it's not the end of the world.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
You do must be relieved about that in a way,
just not having so many triplets. And to a degree,
I suppose yes and no.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Like are handy to mother on and you know, we
do re few and if they could use yeah, try
to leave a few on if they're good enough. But yeah,
I doubt we'll be down too many numbers at tailing time.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Do you like to see your sharing routine out there? Howdy?
Is a six month sharing or what do you work
on now?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
I'm March sharing at the moment, but six months definitely
going to come into the thought process. I think if
will forces keep lifting, I got to due to get
shorn hopefully the end of this week, maybe starting next week. Yeah,
everything else is in March.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Do you generally see your hoggits around now?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah? Yeah, now, yeah, try it. It's good to sort
of get them done before scanning Oregon. Then you're not
having to run different mods through the sheet at sharing
and redmark everything.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
So yeah, it's a resting way that Hogott management's changed
over the years. Like if you weren't having Hoggits and lamb,
you'd traditionally share them around October maybe ten days or
so off the Swedes as such. But when they're lambing,
like you say, it's a totally different ball game.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yeah it is, yeah, and yeah, I think a lot
of guys do them in August. I tried to do
them a few weeks earlier. I've got to weave bit
more more on them at lambing, but but they easy
to hold onto it the otherwise a bit like greased
up figure't the Yeah, pretty much.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
So as far as you DRIs, what's your philosophy there
just gone down the road or you keep a couple
for the freezer, you know.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
That are all down the road. This year, she's pretty
good money. I'm in the past, I've given two do ago,
but it's just too good of money this year, and
there was only about keen of them, so just a
hassle to have around. So you know, put money and ran.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
That's a pretty low number. That's not bad ten or so.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, I've heard some bad results in the tudors, but
Tudors did scan quite low, but not the amount of dries.
But yeah, I think some some frollows have had pretty
bad dry rates in their tutors, but he fortunately wasn't
too bad for me.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Interesting what would that come down to, because it seems
as though the consensus was autumn was pretty good for
the flush.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
I think for me, I was a bit short on
flushing Tucker in March. We didn't have a much gross
in January and February, and then yeah, March come pretty tight.
But the consensus that discussion group the other week was
the tutors this year with ones that were born in
that rough spring two years ago, so that may have
had a knock on effect going forward. But yeah, yes,

(03:51):
that's interesting.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Ones so you reckon.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
When the lamb's born, if it's born in a rough pitch,
the arguments there, and I could provide a bit of
resilience as well.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, yeah, well I think it's the same as like
like cast born in rough weather. We've brought cast before
a week after a storm and they're always they're just
never as good as ones that were born you know,
good good conditions. But I think it does have a
bit of a knock on effect for.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Them when the crops you're going to get through the
season o cake because you're hearing of a few people.
It's either side of the coin. Really, a few people
with a bit of crop to sell other ones. You know,
it's always a bit of a squeaky band to finish.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah, a bit of the next big Ye're four calves
that are got enough to get them through the last
week of August, big kat on four of eight days.
Should get into it, should get into October. Just the
U crops are a bit been a bit short. One
pad I was hoping to get five weeks on I
got three. I got another padduck. I'm hoping to get

(04:53):
four weeks on them. Probably going to get out two
and a half on it. So I've got us coming
out on the grass. Weave it earlier than normal, but
it'll be right.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
So that's a yield. That's just because of the yield.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah, it's my own fault. I got a weep it
greedy this time last year, and I thought I'd sneak
in and drill some oats in between swedes and kale
and yeah probably, yeah, I meant I got the crops
and about a month later and I'll probably mind backed
the minerals a little bit, so lesson learned there, I
might not do that again.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Do you have any concerns around slips and you use.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Not yet fingers crossed. We don't start seeing too many.
You want to get a wee handful there in that
sort of week leading up for lemming, but nothing too major.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Just regarding this time of year, how do you find it?
Do you enjoy it?

Speaker 2 (05:40):
You're starting to see little sheets of spring in the year.
How do you find it in the farming scenes?

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah, oh yeah, I do really enjoy the time yere. Yeah,
you're starting to start to dry up a bit and
you're starting to see the grass growing, and yeah, your
work lowder in the days, get to weave it lower
and you're gonna more time for the web of the
maintenance and you know you're starting to get on the
tractor and do it to that works. No, it's a good,
good change and get start of a new season. It's
always good.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Starting to see the buff the deaf, he's bubbing up.
Actually in the garden. I mean, I'm very working on
a very low economy of scale for sure, but you're
still seeing a few things popping in the gardens.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, and the deathels are always a good sign that
it's yeah, we're coming into that new season, isn't it right.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
We'll talk about this. I suppose Girl Braves Shield winner.
You've won it twice now with the East Northern Barbarians.
Only yourself, Morgan Mitchell and Lockie McCall getting to two
peet with the Barbers. And let's go back to that
game of rugby two or three weeks ago now Jason
rals coincidentally, he's on later on talk about stag Day,
but he's won enough gal Braves that he could, you know,
more hot meals than some people have eaten.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
The arguments there, but look for your.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Guys from a Barbers perspective, you guys are right in
the middle of that grunt.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, no, it was. It was a pretty special guy.
And you know we had to go. We had to
pretty deep to get there in the end, and a
one hundred minut rugby was it was a real push
and but you know, everyone, everyone played their part, and
the dying and the guys that weren't on the field. Everyone, Yeah,
everyone had a part to play and everyone was pretty
starked to get there in the end, and you know

(07:13):
she was a she was a pretty good old night
and gore afterwards.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
It's always a good night and gore, is it not?

Speaker 3 (07:18):
Ah, I suppose so.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
But yeah, because you were saying before as well, you
were just so sore after that game, you're actually your
body was aching for about a week.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, I was. I was getting around pretty gingerly on
Monday and Tuesday there was an extra twenty minutes of
rugby just really took it out. Look at the OEt
of me really and a couple of bruising games the
two weeks before against Star and the semi in the
in the last round robin game. It was Yeah, those
last two weeks off have been pretty good.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
So Stagg there, you're involved with country on on Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Yeah, we've got where with a curtain raiser against one
of the target met troteain. So that'll be a good
a good challenge for us see where we're at, and
so they'll be Yeah, they'll be pretty sharp and coming
down for and then we'll be a few guys in
that team want to prove a point to the Tigo.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Sleepness and the weather looks a bitter for you as well.
But that's just the way, that's just the way we
loc it in south and disposed.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, it is another way this one is playing. It
sort of gets the weekend and it starts getting rough. Yeah,
I think you.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Hey, good on your Brenton.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
We'll let you carry our congratulations on the Galbray shield
success and we'll catch up again and all the best
on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Thank you very much. Andy.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
It Brenton Howdon based out of ben Moore The girlbraves
Shields success a few weeks ago.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
So, like I said Jason Rutler.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
