We welcome back to the Muster. Sultom's a swing as
a song by Dire Straight swinging his way up to
Auckland and down the Mystery Creek as Chris Giles. We
catch up with Chris whenever. It'll be normally up at
field Days. Now, good afternoon, mate. You're involved in Southern

(00:21):
Field Days. You've gone up there in a personal capacity. Firstly,
ground conditions and the likes. How does it compared to
other seasons or other years.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Would you say, oh, it's beautiful up here today, Mark
Cross this morning. Nothing in Hamilton back out at the
Field Days sort of went down into it a little
bit frozen, but what a cracker day. Not a not
a craven sky as far as I can see.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
So you're not having to wear gun boots or anything
like that. All these politicians and one of their shiny
new red bands. They're not being seen.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
No, no, you can probably tell the town to where
the red bands that come out once a year. But
beautiful weather. It's not bad.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
It's a bit like so the field Days. The first
day is normally the busiest for a lot of sales.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of people out talking to
a few of the people and Eeron's having a lot
of people people around and good yarns so far.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
So you were saying before we came on near Chorus
that there's a strong south and condigent up there as well.
I mean, when you go to mist recruit, you think
you'll be able to walk ten meters not bumped into
anyone you know.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
No, No, they'd be very opposite. You've walked ten meters
and it's always supped to talk to. So we have
seen bugl we've done the big shed that talk about,
and there and a half yet through that and every
other sort was someone from Southam and uh made a
way into open country for lunch and a bit of
a cheese cheese tasting and haven't got much further.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
How would you describe the mood of what you've seen
so far? I mean, it's got ideas, so I would
have to be positive, wouldn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Ah, it is every everyone that is pretty positive. They
have talked to and you can you can see as
you walk around. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Now regarding technology, is that something you'd look at when
you go up there? I mean, is that something that
takes your eye when you go to an event like this?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Yeah, that's normally where I come up to see what's next,
what we could be doing in the next fifteen years.
For example, the place we went first was the Innovation
Tent and the first thing that caught our eye is
weighing calves using your phone. Basically just take a photo
and uses lighter and tells you other way to the calf.

(02:32):
So some of the things, yeah, are you amazing during
pasture with your cell phone? Now you just point and
tell you how much I mean, weighing calves now and everything,
all your other apps, resolutions and everything's done off your
phone these days.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
I think. The other thing is is the innovations though
you have at field Days here at Way move up there.
It's a real big deal and all the school kids
and protecting that they embrace it.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, yeah, they do. Just a couple of schools they
get right behind it. And when you walk in you
get to vote on your your favorite swealth and so
there's there's the winner of the categories, but then there's
also a crowd favorite, so that that's in a big marquee.

(03:23):
And then there is an innovation trail, so you actually
make your way around the Field Days using their interactive
map and you can see all the different innovations on
people's sites too.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Is there anything in particularly you're looking at that you
can bring back to why Murmi, would you say? Or
is it a case just comparing apples of apples?

Speaker 2 (03:42):
We're such completely different field days down there. Some people
have you caren't they We're just chure be right, we'll
make it the best. And yeah, it was up here.
It's sort of lot down there. It's more of a
farming one up here at sort of town and farming,
so very different.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Would you say it's a lot more structure up there
as such?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, you're definitely definitely there.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Any big purchases on the horizon for the Giles.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Queen, No, if my wife's listening, but we'll see.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
You never have too many tractors, right, once.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Again, I received I've been not saying that.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
But that's the barometer. That's how you measure the success
of these field days. Are the big ticket items and
what gets moved, Chris, that's just the reality.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah it is. No, I'm sure they'll sell a few
tractors over the next couple of days.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
So how long are you up there for?

Speaker 2 (04:40):
We're coming back Friday, so we're here today on the Wednesday,
and I'm allowed Thursday if we talked too much and
don't see anything.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
So but that's not going to happen.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Oh, I can see myself coming back tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yes, are you going to have to mate? Hey, we'll
let you carry on. Good to catch up and you
enjoy Mystery Creek.
