Speaker 1 (00:01):
Look what you're doing to me I'm a dilly at
your whim All of my defense is.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Down Welcome back to the muster, Daryl Moyles of Sgt
Dan's Stock Foods joins us this afternoon. He's in the
skyscraper on the Gore skyline with a resplendent thistle on
the side and in there. Busy beavers, they're starting like
5.30 in the morning to get the production up and running.
And if you're lucky, every now and then you'll get

(00:27):
that magnificent waft of molasses or muesli drifting through the
main street of Gore.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
G'day, Daryl.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
G'day, Andy. Another good introduction there. Well done. I can
assure you that I'm not there at 5.30, though, to
start up, just in case you're wondering.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
No, I'm not doubting if you were there or not.
I mean, every now and then, you've just got to
put the hours in to get the job done, right?

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Oh, absolutely. You know, Blue and the boys are pretty
keen to start off and get the place running, which
is good. So, you know, they do a very good job.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
How have things been over the past month anyway, Daryl?

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Well, this is obviously a busy time, so things are
flat out. Obviously, flat out making car feed, dairy feed.
Still putting out a lot of sheep nuts, which we
sort of been under the pump a wee bit, keeping
those up to the public. But yeah, calf and lamb
feed now flat out with the dairy guys, most of
them got quite a few in, if not most. So

(01:18):
the dairy feed silos are being filled up regularly. It's
all go. This is what we do and enjoying it
flat out.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Sheep nuts at the moment, given the situation, the feed's
been a little bit slower. Have you seen an uptake,
a bigger uptake than normal?

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Oh, yeah, August was the biggest month we've ever sold
sheep nuts in the 21 years I've been here. So
very big numbers, and we were flat out keeping them up,
as I said. We knew there was going to be
a bit of demand. Obviously, there was good money, and
there isn't a surplus of feed in some places. So
we thought we would sell a wee few, but we

(01:54):
really did get caught.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Out a bit.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
But I don't think we've turned anyone away. So, no,
it's a huge month for sheep nuts here.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Well, given the way the weather's been, I suppose it's
a bit of a no-brainer, but you get afternoons like
this and there is some sunshine around, the weather's still
a little bit unsettled, but the fact it's not raining
is a good thing and get that ground dried out
and growing.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Oh, absolutely. I mean, I think last night I went
home from work from here and it felt quite spring.
There was quite a nice evening and I thought, gee,
bring it on. We just need a few good days
to dry the place out and get some grass growing,
that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Now, as far as calf feed requirements, of course, you guys,
their supplement is the name of your game.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
What are we seeing?

Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, well, calf feed's obviously one of our biggest lines,
and it's our Rolls-Royce. We think we know a bit
about calf feed. So the new amino calf pellets are
just going out great guns at the moment. So we
bought them out this time last year, and the results
have been absolutely fantastic. Growth rates, just with the extra
amino acids, Really high quality feed at a good price

(02:58):
and they're selling very, very well. Still plenty of stock
at this stage. We think we're keeping up at this stage. So, yep,
that's going well. And we also reformulated the lamb pellets
and meal, which are, again, also selling very well. So,
pelletability is the issue. We've just changed a few things
for the uptake on those. So, no, it's all going

(03:19):
very well at this stage.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
So, you're just tinkering all the time there with formulas?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Oh, well, Natalie tinkers every year when we look at
the cost of raw materials. And, you know, the basis
of the product is always the same with starch and energy,
protein and so on. But sometimes there's a different way
of getting there. And we have put some product in
to assist in palatability just for uptake. So, yeah, we
have changed. And we review the formulations every year. Sometimes

(03:47):
they change, sometimes they don't. It depends on what's available
and not available. But that's... What the girl does, she's
got the brains to do that, so we discuss that
and I leave it to her to sort out.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Now, if lamb feeds your Rolls-Royce product, what would be
the Toyota there?

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Runs on the smell of an oily rag.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Good question. Well, probably the high-energy nuts are the general-purpose feed.
They do sheep, deer, goats, cattle, bulls, you name it.
They're selling for everything, so they're the backbone of the place, really. Yep.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Anyway, though, look, it's just been an interesting season.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
When the clients are coming in, what are they saying
to you about the mood of the sector at the moment, Darrell? Yes,
it's been wet, but at springtime, you're looking forward to
warmer days, longer days, growing days. It's been a bit trying,
but generally, the mood?

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Oh, the mood's good. I mean, like, things aren't really,
you know, I'll start again. Things are going really well.
We can't control the weather, and most guys know that.
If you're farming in the south and you need to
have a sense of humour, otherwise you need to be
doing something else. You can't control the weather, so most
people are just getting on with the job. There's a
wee bit of mud around, but that'll change. We'll get
some good weather shortly, and September's always a bit interesting,

(05:01):
so as I said, you've got to have a sense
of humour and just get on with the job.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
One thing you've got there at Sgt Ant 2 is
the drive-through facility. People can go through there and just
pick stuff up on the fly as well.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Yep. They're very successful. There's people coming through all the time,
and we've got... All classes are stock-cated, you know, sheep, deer, goats, chicken, pig,
you name it. We've got a feed there for most classes.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
And snails?

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Snails we don't actually keep in stock. It's not a stock.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Oh, right, it's an each product.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Made specifically to order, sorry.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
But you'll do it if required?

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Oh, if you order it, we'll make it, absolutely. That's
what we're here for.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Talk about a coat, because we can.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
The stags not going too flesh at the moment, but
the Eelblacks, what have you made of this series and
what do you make of this 12 months out.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
From the World Cup?

Speaker 1 (05:47):
I think we're going pretty good, really. As one of
the commentators said the other day, these boys have only
been with Mr Rennie for a couple of months. I
think they're going pretty good. They've had a couple of losses,
but pretty good side, the Springboks, and it's been pretty
good rugby. If you look at how many tries we
scored and the closeness of the scores, I'm enjoying the season.

(06:08):
And I think this game, although it's a bit random
being in the US, will be another good game because
there's a few changes obviously happening with a few injuries.
So I think it's great. I'm enjoying it. And I
think in 12 months' time, they'll be a pretty good side.
I think the rest of the world will be looking
back thinking, oh shit, these guys are going to be
pretty good.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
A few issues with the scrum, but the arguments there,
the box, they've been together for such a long time.
And we've probably seen this around 2017, the All Blacks
starting to fall from their Mount Everest as such. I mean,
you think back, what was it, Albany, 57-0, we beat
the box. Two years later, they were world champions in Tokyo.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah, and I think their run might come to an end.
I mean, we've had really experienced guys in the All
Blacks before, and then all of a sudden you come
to the end of their run, and really, OK, they've
got a really good scrum, but they haven't got that
much else. They rely on that forward power, really take
that away from them. They're average in a lot of areas,
in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, so the Baltimore game, you'll still watch it. I mean,
it's a money-making exercise, but it'll be interesting to see
the synergies of what the ABs do, especially with the Lucys.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
You'll like to see Ty Lowe get a run.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, I mean, I've seen a team on my phone
earlier this morning. I don't know whether it's actually the
official team or not, but, yeah, it'll be interesting. You know,
it looks like Satiti and Lakai. I mean, I think
they're going really good. So, no, I'm looking forward to
the game. I'll definitely watch it, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Yeah, good on you, Darrell. All right, Sergeant Dan Stockfoods,
if people want to get in touch, what do they do?

Speaker 1 (07:34):
0800 SGT DAM.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Darrell Moyles, always appreciate your time on the muster.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Thanks, Andy. Good to talk to you.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Daryl Moyles of Sgt Dan's Stock Food, based right here
in Gore. You'll see them on the main street beside
the railway line at the roundabout. If you don't know
where streets are in Gore, you certainly know landmarks and
the big Scottish thistle on the side as well.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
To wrap up next, Tim Baker from Clinton Young Farmers.
