Speaker 1 (00:01):
An holy mind.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Welcome back to the muster. Beautiful afternoon, hearing good blue
sky and could be a lot worse for June. As
we go back up north. Greg Miller, we're talking. I HC.
Calfski here is of course national manager of fundraising and
generally around this time of year we catch up with
great to see how things have been.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Good afternoon, Hi Andy, how you doing.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
I'm doing really well.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
It's always good to catch up because, let's face the
idly calf scheme as an initiative that just seems to
go from strength to strength.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Well it does, and this last season was an amazing
season for us, and we're incredibly grateful to the farmers
that support us. And you know, it was it was great.
It's really raised some good money and back to back
to the day's pre im bobus, which is amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Actually if the prices we're seeing the beef at the moment,
so anything that's donated towards a Calf's scheme, it's it's
pretty good.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Well, yeah, it's a very generous donation at the moment,
and that you know, we're always grateful because it and
what we can also see and the sales agents were
telling us is that we had some really good calves
come to sail and they fetch really great, great average

(01:28):
prices across the board. So fantastic. We love it.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
So what is a history of the IHC calf scheme
for the uninitiated grig.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Well, yeah, it's as a fundraiser. It started forty four
years ago, and I've been around fundraising for or you know,
thirty thirty five years. I've never seen anything like it,
and it's amazing. People donate a weaned calf, you know,

(01:58):
the dairy farmers obviously, and it's over in Bovus, so
lots of people started saying, actually, we'll give you a
virtual calf, which is basically a three hundred average price,
which is a bit less than the average price we're
getting at the moment for calves. But yeah, so the

(02:19):
dairy farmers, they generally the majority of the money comes
from people saying yep, we'll give you one calf. They
raise it for three months, we get it to sale
and we get the money as a donation. So it's fantastic.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
And what does the money go towards as such.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Well, it goes into our work with people with intellectual
disability and families and rural communities, and you know, they're
the ones that really, you know, often are some of
the most vulnerable groups in any community, and you know,
do it hard when it comes to just figuring out
how to navigate systems and what they can do. And

(02:59):
so we're you know, we've been doing some amazing things
over the last couple of years, like sibling camps for
the for the brothers and sisters, family camps, also just
helping with advice and building up community groups in those
rural communities, groups of parents that help each other out.
So it makes a big, big difference and they're very grateful.

(03:23):
You know, the money goes back into rural communities.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Now.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Of course the National Field Days are up and running.
How have you found them? Oh?

Speaker 1 (03:30):
You know, I always love them. They're quite hectic when
you're there and you sorry you I was looking out
for you this year and anyway.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Just hopefully next year see here we go.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah that you know, it was so busy and the
weather has been brilliant in Hamilton or in Waycaddow and
really everyone came out. It was like it was it
was it was like a mad you know, just something
some festival in South America. The lanes through the field

(04:09):
days were completely packed. On some days all in the sunshine.
It felt a little bit different than normal, but amazing.
It's quite a buoyant feeling there. I don't know if
you've talked to anyone else, but it was good to
see the rural community feeling good about things, and you know,

(04:30):
seeing that, you know ahead looking like things. You know
there were some good yeah, for sure, positive fines out there.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I mean, you give the way the prices are at
the moment, the arable is the one sector that you know,
fingers crossed things go up there. But you look at
the protein market, you look at the milk market, milk
industry as well. I mean daring as the word I'm
looking for there, and everything's just looking really rosy at
the moment. And those industries in particular.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Well, I think it's always been the backbone of New
Zealand and I from my perspective, you know, raising money
in the charitable sector for people with intellectual disability. I've
never seen a group of people that understand the meaning
of community more and want to help and just do there.

(05:22):
But it seems like small sometimes and what often they
say is it's just what you do. But collectively, you know,
last year we raised more than one point four million dollars.
It was absolutely amazing and it has a big impact
and we're incredibly grateful.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
So somebody wants to get involved with the calf skiing, Greg,
what do they do?

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Well, you don't have to be a dairy farmer, but
anyone can just go to IHC, you know, look up
HC and calf and you'll get there, or dot org,
dot nz forward slash calf and you can donate a
virtual calf or you can pleaed ja calf if you're
a dairy farmer. We love it. We love to get

(06:08):
new farmers and or people from the rural sector involved.
Will you even have a few sheep that get in there?
You might be interested, Andy.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
I don't own sheepe these days, but if I do,
I'll be on board. I'll give you the tip there. Greg,
I live in the middle of town these days, and
my proper towny.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
You're a tell yeah, you're not quite a towny when
you're down that way, but there you go.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Hey, Greg Miller, National manager of Fundraising for the IHC,
always a pleasure to chat with you. You enjoyed the afternoon
and under the weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
Sir, Yeah, thank you, Andy, thank you very very much.
Chairs Bat.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Greg Miller of the IHC calf Scheme.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
What Greg said, A great initiative to get involved with
if you're prepared to do something like that, because the
money goes towards such a worthy cause.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
Staying up North.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Next, before we wrap up Graham, Minty Meg, let's talk
some super rugby
