Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the muster. We are now heading over
to Black Mount. And if you were tuning into the
TV last night, you may have seen Harriet and Ed
Pinckney as they featured on Country Calendar telling it their
story and Harriet joins me this afternoon, Good afternoon, Harriet,

(00:20):
how are you? And how was last night?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Ah? H, I love you, Thank you for having me.
How your last night look? It's pretty nerve wracking to
put yourself out there to watch a program with the
rest of the country that you haven't been able to
pre see. But yeah, feedback's been great. We're really happy
with it. And yeah, they got some incredible footage of
the farm, which is really cool.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Really cool to be able to see you guys and
where you've come from and where you're going. Got some
great horses coming along there too, which is we got
close to my heart. But tell us a little bit
about that whole Country Calendar experience. And thirty minutes on
the TV. There's a lot more than thirty minutes on

(01:05):
the farm to get that footage, isn't there.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, there is. It's definitely a different experience. You know,
you're miked up for four and a half days, they
were filming for to get that, I think it ends
up being about seventeen minutes of airtime, you know. So
for example, the horse scene at the beginning, with the

(01:29):
breaking in the horse in the yards and then Archie
on his pony, that was about four hours of filming
to grab that. So you know, you do a lot
of filming and a lot of talking and you don't
really know what parts are going to be pulled out
from it. So but you know, I think Country Calendar
always do a great job, don't They have streamlining everything
and molding everything together. So it's a nice smooth story

(01:51):
and program.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
And how to acchie enjoy seeing himself on the TV.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, well he sat still for the whole program, So
it's saying something for a two year old. Yeah, I
don't think you could quite figure it out. But he
was all about chatting about Bonbona's pony and mum and
dad and we had a few friends come over. So yeah,
it was a lovely evening. And yeah, I think he
thought that was pretty cool to see himself up there.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Oh, no, great work. It was an awesome story and
great to be able to showcase a little farm. Well
it's not so little fun so close to our Fjordland
National Park, but really the points behind the story that
you were really trying to share as that whole on
farm safety and everybody going home at the end of

(02:35):
the day, but also educating our next generation. They had
a little bit of footage there when you were doing
one of your days up in the North Island. Got
a few and more of those planned in the future.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I like, yeah, love definitely want to keep running those days.
I think they're really important and a really positive thing
to hold in our rural communities and give the children
a chance to you know, slow down and actually have
these conversations that sometimes when we have kids on farms,
you know, life is a little hectic from time to time,

(03:10):
and I think through no foil of our own, we
don't stop to you know, actually have these conversations and
explain the why behind behind things and how we can
stay out of harm's way. So that are really a
really great way to do that and get you know,
people that are really passionate about each module to coming
and share their personal experiences around how you can stay safe.

(03:33):
And then you know the fact that the kids get
to take home two of the books at the end
of the day that a sponsored means that that learning
carries on from the day, which is practical, it goes
into the home with the stories and you know what
it's like reading stories with children. All the questions and
conversations come out of that, which is really powerful. And
in turn, the children are having these conversations with their parents,

(03:57):
which then gets taken out onto the farm and you
find that the kids are saying things to Mum and
dad like, oh, we can't stand there because we'll be
in the tract of blind spot, or we need to
make sure that we stop this trailer down properly and
we have the weight in this part of the trailer.
Like you know, it's quite powerful stuff, and the kids
actually make you slow down and think about a job

(04:17):
that you're doing in a moment, which is, you know,
one of the key things just staying safe for both
adults and the children.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
It's not just about making health and safety and extra.
It's making health and safety part of the conversation that
just falls into everyday life, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, you know, it's it's not really too and different
from our environmental stuff. Really, I don't think it's just
something that it's entwined into everyday business, you know. And
that's where I think the children are a really key target,
because if they grow up with these things instilled in them,
then it will just be something that they will do

(04:56):
every day when they're on the farm, you know, going
away from that, she'll be right attitude to that. Let's
stop and think about this for a minute and take
a breath, and you know, and think about the best
way we can do this, And generally the best way
that you end up doing a job ends up being
the safest way anyway. You know. People have all had

(05:18):
situations where they've gone, oh, I think I'd like to
drive through the air because it'll be faster if I
get through, and the other ways got you know, I've
got six gates to open. But you know on yourself,
if you do go that way that you end up
getting stuck or something like that, which actually ends up
taking you longer and making you feel more stressed. So

(05:39):
following that gut feeling and stopping and thinking about it,
and then you know, you end up with a better result.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Seven farmers have featured in the latest ac C stats
and it shows it more than fifteen hundred injured in
their line of work. During twenty twenty five, We've still
got a little bit of work to do in this space,
and there's technology potentially to play a role in that
piece as well. What are your views on that?

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah, look, the stats aren't great, are they, And I
think there is more work to do than what we
think in the industry when it comes to health, safety
and well being and in regards to technology. You know,
we've been having lots of conversations around the likes of
Haltera recently and how that would change our business and

(06:24):
how we went, you know, how we would go about
every day farming, for instance, our beef cattle on the hills.
You know yourself, you've ridden your horse around. Our hells
are pretty steep. We don't take vehicles out there other
than the motorbike on the tracks, but generally we're on
a horse or walking. But you know, we do big
days out mustering, walking around and generally when you're doing

(06:46):
a big day mustering, that's because you're bringing stock into
the ards for another couple of big days, you know,
and that that can mean that people are tired, you know,
fatigue and set in and then the role on effect
from that can be that somebody make mistake. You know,
if you had holder on the cows out there, you'd
be able to move them a bit more easily without

(07:09):
actually taking that human capacity to do it. And therefore,
by the time you get to the yards to do
the job over the conveyor and the kettle yards crushing cows,
that kind of thing, you've actually got fresher people. Obviously,
there's that angle. Where is it going to take away
from why we farm? And you've been mustering with me,
and it's really pretty cool being out in the hill

(07:30):
with your horse and your dogs and doing that part
of the job. But I think if you can find
the right balance with the technology and use it in
the right way, then you're not going to completely eliminate
the fun part, but you're going to be able to
balance that. How can we preserve ourselves with people so
that we are you know, all in a frame of

(07:52):
mind where we can make good decisions to therefore be
safer overall, if that makes sense.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
At the end of the day, we are farming because
we love being an outdoors, fresh air with stock, and
as you showcased on Country Calendar last night, being able
to walk around those hills and yes, I've had the
privilege to ride around those hills as well, and your guys,
risk elimination is having those horses on there instead of
vehicles and being able to get around, And from a

(08:18):
mental health point of view, then nothing beats getting out
and getting some fresh air, whether it's on foot or
on horse as well, So that also is going to
have benefits at the end of the day from you
might make a decision, but your risks are a lot lower.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Yeah, absolutely, And I think with the technology conversation, you know,
every property is so different, so what would work for
us is not going to work for perhaps our next
door neighbors. And how you use it and utilize it
will change depending on the property. So I think everybody's
going to have to just figure out the best fits

(08:53):
for them and when they can save people a bit
and where we still need to be hands on and
that kind of thing, and that'll just look different for
each property.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
I think, Oh, congratulations Harriet, and a great show last night,
and look forward to catching up and seeing what's happening
on farm soon.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Sol. Thanks love, thank you for having me and appreciate
everybody taking the time to watch our story.
