I am now heading over to Nightcaps to the Nightcaps
Young Farmer's Club, and we are joined this afternoon by
Hayden Smith.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Good afternoon, Hayden, good afternoon.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
How are you today?

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Not too bad and nice Chris start to the morning?

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Has things on the farm?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
Yeah, it was bloody child this morning. I had to
put on an extra prayer long John, so go out,
But no, everything's been looking good this morning and it's
nice to good for us coming.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
And what's been happening on farm in the last few days.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
So we're dairy farming out heach open or OK's got
drawed off late May, so yeah, they're just out at grading.
So I've just been ticking through a few winter maintenance
jobs of fencing and change rubb're and the shed and
just trying to keep busy. Day.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Oh, they keep busy, keep warm.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Have you still got some trees to clean up from
those storms and know that's what a lot of people
are going to be doing over the winter.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Ah. No, we're very fortunate. We don't have a lot
of trees on farm to begin with, so we were Yeah,
we didn't get that much damage, so which was excellent.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I might find time for a little break in there.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Then Oh you know, I've got a buddy, I've got
a tar hunting trip this end of this week. So
that's excited. We'll cruise up and go do that, and
then you have a few other jobs to take off
around the farm and enjoy.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Oh cool, Where do you go tar hunting or is
it a top secret?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Oh? I'm going with the Mason going out of the
Harry Harry Pub and up there and get the helicopter
riding and something else. So that should be excellent.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Sounds good.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
It sounds like the biggest challenge will be getting out
of the Harry Harry Pub.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Hopefully.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Nightcaps young Farmers, And this actually takes me a trip
down memory lane.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
I actually went to school and take a.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Team in nightcaps and then what did a number of
my years of my young farmers in Southland in nightcaps
when we used to meet at the y Rio Tavern
back in the day. And yet some great memories from
peace shoots which I think you still do, through.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
To hitch hiking and everythink in between. So how's everything
going out there with the club?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, that's going good now and winter and yeah we've
got a good member base and yeah, we're just taking
off a few events. And we went up to Tiana
for their ball last weekend, and we've got our own
ball this weekend at the Winter Memorials.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
In It seems to be ball season. A few clubs
putting them on.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Great social occasion, great to see everyone getting around to
everybody's you've got a bit of a theme for your one.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Ah yep, yep, no, our theme is a gunment ball gumber.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Ball, So turn up in your red bands.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, we just thought, oh we we'll not make here.
Run go and get special costumes, So posh up your
bespirit of gummies and there rock along for a good
old buggie.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
Nice And it's actually getting together and seeing each other
and having a few brown lemonade.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
It's all about, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yep, yep, nar those brown lemonade and important. But yeah,
it'd be good to see run out there and you
have a good time and listen to a bit of
love music and have a have a good time.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Really, And I see across the region clubs have been
having the agms.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Now, have you guys got your new exect in place
for the next year?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yep, yep, we howd how's in May I believe. Yep,
And yeah, I went from a treasure roll to the
six role our chair women Island Stadium and we had
some fresh faces coming as well as an old headst depart. Yeah.
Club's looking good for the next year. Oh, great work.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
It sounds like it's under good control and I think
we're going to catch out with Ireland next week, which
will be great. Tom Sley obviously representing Otago Southland for
the FMG Young Farmer of the Year which is only
really two weeks away, and it got a crew heading
up there as well to New Plymouth.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yep, yep, we've got half a dozen of our members
cruising up. Yeah, we'll line out as Queen's down to
start of the month and then we're going to get
up and support him as well as Harry McCallum and
Megan White as they're on the fencing conpetition. So yeah,
we'll cruise out there and support Otago South It should
be great.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Col So you got the T shirts or some merch
all sort of to make sure you all look the same.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Give him a big Southland contingency. What are you taking up?

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, I think that's a bit of a bit of
a sacred I think the look it's going to be fun.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Oh sounds good.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
And the mascot get his name the beer has he
been found so he can make the trip as well.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Oh I'm not part of that organizing. I think I might. Yeah,
I might have to look into that, make sure he's
gone and make sure everyone's sworded with that. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
You always used to be a thing in the mascot
and then it used to be the mess who could
steal Who's mas scot?

Speaker 3 (04:33):
Oh no, I can barely look after myself, so I
probably shouldn't be left in charge of him.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
You think he might end up in the hands of
some other region.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Then who knows where we can get up to him.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Oh, it'll be good to be able to see how
everythink goes up there, and great to hear that. You've
got some fencing finalists as well, So Harry and Megan
representing Otago Southland and the club for that as well.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Yep, No, we'll just go and support the because they're
good mates. So yeah, teach one.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Nothing like a bit of club rivalry. And at the
end of the day when you go out there, you're
all one.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Aren't you.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah? Yeah. From the White South and.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
So if anybody wants to is listening and thinks actually
I want to be part of that night cats club,
just let us know when your meetings are and how
they get involved.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Yeah, well, our meetings all done for this month, but
probably the best way to keep in contact with us
is look on Instagram or Facebook for the next upcoming meeting.
Nine times out of ten it's first Wednesday of the
month at the Top pub in winter. So if you
just keep your eyes peeled on that, you should be
able to link up with us, or if not, just
message the page. We should be able to get in
contact with you, which would be great to see. New

Anybody's welcome when it comes to young farmers and I'm
sure you'll get involved in the in the yarns.

If you don't have a good year when you go there,
you have one when you leave.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, it's a good, great group of people and we
all get around it. Such that's good club.
