Speaker 1 (00:11):
This says the Muster on Hoker.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Nouis Hayden, Smith of Nightcats Young Farmers, joins us in
this week's Young Farmers round up. He's one of the
regional finalists in the Attager's Southland Finals, which is getting
underway in a couple of weeks time, and he's based
at hit Job.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hayden welcome to the muster.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Thank you very much you and you're good to good
to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
You're good to catch up mate.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Firstly, give us an idea about the farming background of
where you are at the moment, what you're doing.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
So me and my partner Eiler farming fifty to fifty
milking at Hedgehope and Southland milking four hundred and fifty
cals and yeah, loving it.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Season's going pretty good to date.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah that scene too. We definitely had a better spring
than we did the previous couple of years, which has
been great and I started to write a bit now,
but it's the same old thing of farmers like to
complain about how much water or lack of water were getting.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Well, was a farmer's prerogative to complain about something.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Though, Yeah, well we have nothing, nothing else to do.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Pretty much. So you're getting the season has been pretty
kind to you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Well, I spoke to either on the show not that
long ago, to be fair, and she seemed pretty pragmatic
about the situation at hand with the season, so it
was cool.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, it's hard to complain. We're up
for the year in terms of milk production and hopefully
we've got all ourcous and crafts so we can't complain
about too much.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
Nice one. Now you're involved with Nightcaps Young Farmers.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
You've managed to get yourself into the regional finals, like
I say, for the Young Farmers comp which is happening
in a couple of weeks here, being hosted by the
Way Tiny Club and Gore, So you'll be looking forward
to that.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, yeah, now looking forward to that. I've competed once
last year which didn't make through the top ace and yeah,
I really excited to get through this year. And you
see what's got in stoo for us.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
So what do you reckon was the point of difference
from your perspective getting through this time?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
I reckon Balfa stitching up my having a share of sheep.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Farming, mate, I know.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
How to do that.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Oh, it's about being at all round her. I suppose,
like you play cricket, sometimes you can bad an bowl.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Wow, that's true, that's true. I'd probably just need to
broaden my horizons.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
So that was the one thing. I suppose that's a
valid comment. If you're in the dairy game and haven't
had anything to do with sheep as such, sharing one's
probably just going a CONFUSI you of.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
It, Yeah, I've got to I've got three pet lambs
in the front panic. I might need to take it
to the hand piece and try and figure it out
before the day.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Well, you don't what a butcher the poor buggers either.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Wow, they're probably ready for the freezers.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
It's one way of doing it, I suppose.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
So like it's a preparation and that when it comes
to this point of it, is it a matter of
trying to do a bit of study or for the instance,
you know what you know and just see what unfolds
on the day.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Oh yeah, yeah, And I have been trying to do
a little bit of reading enough because there will.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
Be a fear bit of.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Current news getting around in terms of government and what's
happening in the area as well as Yeah, just trying
to get around the farm, doing a bit of fencing
to tidy up that, and yeah, having a look at
whose the sponsors are, and yeah, trying to figure out
almost pre planning for what's coming up.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
I guess, yeah, try and see what what Curvall's in
there by the way TONI this.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
Year then, oh, I'm sure they'd be goody.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Now, my caps, young farmers. Have things been with the club?

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, no, it's been really good. We had a great
January meeting at Andrew Cowie's place in Brown's. It was
great to have a farm turn around his place and
yeah there's a good turnout, probably thirty people and cooked
barbecue for everyone. So no, it's great.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Yeah, and that's what it's about.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
He I mean, get through the new year, you settle
down back into work mode or a lot of people,
let's to be honest, just work through the Smiths season
and such and just about reconnecting, right, Yeah, it was.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Great to catch up with the rather they have a
beer and see, yeah what they've been up to for
Newyears and whether they are fortunate enough to get away
and such like. Yeah, that's good, good catch up.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
You guys manage a bit of a breakover the Christmas season.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, we're fortunate enough they're now working one of the
stat days off, so we went to glender Catsight for
four days between the breaks. Nice and it was probably
about it for us. Yeah, yep.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Now the Golden Standard competition happening this weekend. Tell us
what's happening, So.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
That'll be a bit of fun. So we've organized to
go to lime Hill's Bowling Club and play long balls
for the night and followed up we managed to get
the lime Hills Rugby ground for everyone to pitch ten
to day. So yeah, hopefully we can turn up there,
have a few bowls, have a few beers. Yeah, support
the local balls club and you figure out who's the
best in the area.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Now do you have a dress code for the evening?

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Oh, yes we do. I think it's cheese cutters.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Well I was going to say, I was going to
suggest that the cheese Cutters aroulse beige socks, knee socks
and beige shorts.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Any any reasoning on the beige, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Beige is the color of their cricket team were used
to be.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Oh oh that's right, So yeah, you're wrong to turn
up and a bit of their blazers and cheese colors
and yeah, it just up like in the fifties and yeah,
see hell where they can.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Bulk now the Golden standard is such. What's it? Is
it like the ren Freely Shield of the Young Farmers?

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:34):
Essentially yep Son has had it for the last year,
I believe, until we went up to and took it
off them in a game of badminton and a wall sheet.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
That's right, that was that was in the not the
light crib, but in the bright what do you call it?

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Probably tight and bright.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Wasn't that tight and bright?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Then'll do yeah? Yeah, yeah, So we went up there
and played but badminton and unfortunately cover our members rabbit
snagged the trophy. So yeah, and then we thought, oh,
we'll be better wrap into it in the new year
and get things ball rolling.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
That's what do you guys do? Much fundraising in the lights? Hayden?
Does that come into the equation?

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Yeah, yeah, I've always as we were recently at the
Winter and am P show. Well I perasally wasn't. I
was normal counsel, but a lot of the members were
at the winternam P show holding the sheet for the
judges during the sharing competition as well as we've done
some other ones. We bark ended a wedding four weeks
ago and also I Cocky got us in to pick
up Baylor drap out of a crop panic, which was

(06:34):
yea good fundraiser. Wasn't too much fund it was a
good fundraiser.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
So night catch young farmers Hayden around that area want
to get involved.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
What do they do?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Well, they probably turn it off Li hel Full and
so on Friday at about thirty six, I believe. But
other than that they can probably just contact us through
our Facebook page, on our Instagram page and get involved
and I'll see it the next meeting.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Yeah, you get on your Hayden.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
All the best for the regionals that are coming up
in a couple of weeks here in Gore, and good
luck with the bowls at the weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Yeah, I think very much.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Andy, laugh out loud with ag proud because life on
the land can be a laughing matter. Brought to us
by sheer Well data working to help the livestock farmer.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
This is quite possibly a scam, and I agree.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
The entire cellar dressing industry exists purely because people don't
actually like sell its little lies. Indeed, Fleetwood Max says
at best. Right, Hey, we'll leave it there for the afternoon.
I'm Andy Muller. This has been a musterro on haker.
Now he thanks to Peter Genetics, podcast is going up.
