Welcome back to the muster on Hakanui. Eiler Edgekimb joins
us next and the Young Farmer's Chat for a Tuesday,
and it's fair to say it's been a phenomenal couple
of days for young farmers in the South. Of course
Tom Slee winning the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Award,
but a lot of the other awards came South as well.
Now Isler Edgekim is going to fill us in on

what actually went down with these awards up in New
Plymouth over the weekend. Eila, congratulations as well to the
just Otago Southlands for everything that occurred. But you personally,
you picked up the Emerging Member Award.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yes I did. I was pretty stoked with it. But yeah,
it's just nice to be rewarded for the hard ware
that goes in. But obviously you don't strive for that
at the end of the day. You do it because
you enjoy it. So yeah, it was pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
But the fact you're being recognized by your peers in
the organization says you must be doing something right. So
well done. Yeah, no thing, Andy, So tell us all
about you, Plymouth. It sounds like a pretty hectic five
or six dayst.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Well it was pretty good. Like I don't think any
of us had actually been up there, so it was
really colder. Just see another part of New Zealand. And yeah,
we flew into Wellington, so we had a four and
a half hour drive ahead of us on the Thursday.
On the Wednesday, so it was good to get up
there and absolutely stunning views and obviously Mount Edmont was

the premost scene in the background. So yeah, and the
weather was good and a wee bit warmer than down here,
but yeah, no, we had a really good time.

Just go over the awards that we got down here
in the South. You got Region of the Year, Tom
won the big Accolade, you got a merging member. What
else was? If there was something else, wasn't.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
There Clinton Young Farmers got the best just district confition.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
And yeah, we had a couple awards at the tournaments,
which was held on the Thursday. We had three from
Young fart Well, two from Farmers, one from Waitan, one
from Thornbury, one from upper Man and two from West
to Tago competing in that and Robert Wilson from Thornbury

came first in the treat shooting. So that was pretty cool.
Back to back winner of that. Shane Sanders came second
from upper Man which was really awesome as well.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
And Megan White and has A Macazza got third in
the fencing. Hopefully were in arguing too much during it.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
No, they were pretty good. It was pretty awesome to
see Megan out there because she was the only female competitor.
And yeah, they held their call which was good and
had a couple of beverages after, so yeah, no, it
was really cool to see yeah, well Rry out there competing, so.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, yeah, now, fantastic it was. So it was a
pretty good environment up there. I mean that goes about
saying young farmers as such. We talk about how how
good it's going down here in the South. What's happening
around the rest of the country. Do you get the
same vibe.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, there's a few other regions that are trying to
get on far with the Targo Southland, so we've definitely
set the standard just because they're bringing up new people
to help change the areas and get a bit more
involvement right around the country. So yeah, no, it's nice
to meet other people from other regions and see what

they're doing and yeah, no, it was really good.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
So what is it that a Targo South that is
doing so well to win Region of the Year two
years in succession.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
I think we've got a lot of club backing, like
we've got involved, like within our regional exec we've got
someone from almost every club in the region that is
in that role, so we're able to communicate a lot
better with things going on on and there's no double
booking and I don't know, we've just got a really

good I guess backbone to Otago's Southland.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
So and membership just seems to be growing as well.
I mean numbers wise, how much would you say it's
gone up in the past couple of seasons.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Oh, I wouldn't have any idea, but it's definitely growing. Yeah,
just people keep coming through and realizing, oh, you know,
it's a good, good environment to be a part of.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
And yeah, and of course Tom Slee winning the overall
accolade too, so there's a fear few of you's out
there supporting him. To be fair, it was awesome.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, no, there's about fifty fifty to sixty of US
members plus Tom supporters, so it was really awesome and
great vibes all around.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
No, it was really good to see. Now. As far
as to YadA, young Farmers, I mean, this has been
your focus over the past. We were what happens now,
I mean, carving's coming up not far away from landing,
but there'd be a few events on the horizon i'd
say around the province definitely.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
We've just had our bark up planning meeting last night
with the subcommittee. We've locked on the tenth of October
for that and that's always a primo night, so yeah,
that'll be there'll be some comms around that coming out
very shortly. And then we've got a few interclub events,
(05:25):
the car trail which is early August, and then we're
looking at heading up to Terrace for their bark up
at the end of August as well, so we have
to put the dog trailer that we've brought to use,
which will be pretty awesome.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
So well, I know everything's in pretty good steed though,
just regarding the organization, I mean, you guys must have
been buzzling as you came home. We saw heads over
the past couple of days.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, No, we were absolutely thriving.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
So okay, Tiana, Young Farmers, anybody around that region, thinking, yeah,
I want to get a part of it. What do
they do?
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Check our socials out and yeah, we usually hold our
our meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. We've
actually got our meeting tomorrow night instead, purely because a
few of us were away last week for Green Finals.
So and it's usually at the Tiania Club. But everything's
posted up on the on our socials.

four thousand dollars installing a dedicated dairy free freezer in
the break room. There's a ribbon cutting ceremony next week.
The CEO is coming down. They're naming it after our husband,
Dave's inclusive freezer freezer initiative. It is going to be
used as a case study in their diversity training. All
of a sudden, her husband is spiraling. He's in too deep.

She's told him to become clean. He's considering just becoming
lactose and tolerant. Through sheer force of will.
