Speaker 1 (00:01):
See.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Oh that's the way it should be. This is the
muster one Hakanui Isler Prangle joins us this afternoon. You've
heard Isla speak before in The Young Farmers seem we're
catching out this afternoon. She's based at head Shoke where
she's farming with her partner Hayden, and really interesting as well.

(00:28):
Her backstory about other things she does outside of farming,
all just correlates together. Isil a good afternoon? Freshly ground
conditions at head Choke. How are you holding up? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Pretty good. There's been caught a bit of rain overnight,
so I don't know. It's always nice to have to
rain at the storm of the year. But it's almost
seeming like we're getting quite a lot.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
So as far as production though, you guys must be
going through the roof.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yeah, yep, nuts, that's definitely holding on those the girls,
so we're still doing one somewhere there, so it can't
complain too much. Still making milk anyway.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Well, as far as the dairy sector goes, I suppose
there's not really many negatives from your viewpoint too.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
No, now she's looking strong and you know the forecast
midpoint update earlier in the week. That's very positive, so yeah,
hoping it holds on.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Really so Islan. For those who aren't familiar about your
farming operation, they just give us a beef break ground. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
So we have been sheer milking at heatgeh Hopes for
four years. Yeah, probably winter for seventy for seventy cows
and one hundred and seventy five beers. Yeah, few deep
pails and floodable flats and it's got its challenges. So yeah,

(02:00):
lot of learnings when we move there and yeah, come
sick in the June where we're buying the place. So
that's also very exciting.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Congratulations, that's awesome. Yeah, and just showing young people who
wanted to get involved in the dairy industry. And we
talk about it to the young farmers, but I remember
speaking to you previously as well and talking about you
are the face of the farming future effectively, and you
need to have your voice heard and be up and
stand up and say what you need to say.

Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah. I guess it's probably quite a big motivator for
Hayden and myself just to get out there. Hence Young
Farmers Dairy Awards, all that sort of stuff, like if
you don't put yourself forward and you know, try and
shape the future of the industry. Then yeah, I don't know,

(02:53):
you can't really have too many opinions or complaints really,
so yeah, it's sort of like if you don't if
you don't know who. So it's yes, sort of a
big driver than me and Hayden.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Do a lot of your peers shame share that view
around leadership.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah, yeah, definitely. I mean we sort of, yes, surround
ourselves with lots of motivating people and people that really
are passionate about the industry as most farmers are, you know.
So yeah, I think, yeah, if we can drive drive

(03:31):
the future, then I think it's super beneficial for the industry.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
You know, every farm has this challenges one way or another.
But I mean as far as what you can control
inside the farm gates, it's pretty good.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Yeah, it's very it's very very good. And yeah, like
you said, there's always the uncontrollable, and like you wouldn't
be a farmer if you weren't aware of the fact,
here's a lot of uncontrollables in farming. So yeah, I
think just gotta motivating young people to come into the
industry and want to be a part of what you know,

(04:08):
what it has to offer.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
So now the Tago South and Dairywards are coming up
next month yourself and Hayden though the twenty twenty five
are Tigo Southland Sheeer Farmers of the Year. That must
have been pretty cool to get their accolade.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yeah, it's unreal. A lot of hard work and like
Hayden has a lot of farming knowledge, but to get
it out on paper and get him to be able
to discuss what he actually does, it was a lot,
a lot of time and it was quite difficult to
be for you, But no, it was really awesome and

(04:43):
there were some amazing competitors, so that was it was
awesome to get that ticked off, and then even more
awesome to get up up north and meet all these
other amazing dairy farmers. Just completely different scale, a different
processes everything. So yeah, it's definitely all eye opening.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
And of course Hayman competed recently in the regional finals,
so to take yourself and young farm of.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
The Year, yeah yep, nice put himself out there for
that too.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
So how did he get on doing the old style
wool press putting the wool wind?

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Not good, Chuck, Mattellen at that one.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
I don't think it was the only one to be fair,
but that's the beauty of the competition. But like you say,
bringing in bringing intense farming knowledge to the operation as well.
So I take it you guys must rebound off each
other's ideas.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, yeah, call it rebound or constructive arguments.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Or constructive arguments. How does an argument become constructive? We'll
have to figure that one out one day. But look, you've,
you know, just the top things off as well. You've
played playing rugby for a Tago spirit, You've had your
fifty caps, so that's something else is you're a pretty
busy individual.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Yep, No, definitely pretty busy. Hung up the boots for that.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Now.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
We've got fifty caps last year and it was probably
my big goal, so I'm super proud of that. But yeah,
just to travel at the wrong time the year mid carvings, Yeah,
I guess you just had to decide enough was enough.
So you're real grateful to be und to represent Metago,
which is where I'm from originally.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
So yeah, are you Are you still playing club rugby
as such?

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah? Yeah, and be are closer for big Rubber country.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
So no, It's a lot of travel, isn't it. But
you just got to do what you've got to do.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Yeah, I mean when you're passionate and you know you're
young and you've got energy, there's there's no reason not
present there.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
So yeah, certainly, I mean talking about what you're doing.
You've got your rugby element to go along with everything
else and just basing your interests of farm, the young
farmers and the like. And it sounds like you two
have got your head screwed on pretty good with these
constructive arguments.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Yeah, but I'd like to think they're constructive, not sure, But.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
So what's technic on the farm today? Though? What's the
go for you guys.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
To be?

Speaker 2 (07:18):
For you?

Speaker 1 (07:18):
We just picked up some idiot bales from from a
mate so for the calves, so just unloading them and
sticking them up yet off to want to connect in
the weekend, so we're doing so just sort of getting
ourselves already on the farm for getting away.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
So hey, good on you. I appreciated your time. Safe
trails up to one ako, We'll check again and good
luck with the idiot breaks.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Na see, I'm good and you thank you very much.
That's the way it.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Should be Tyler Frang Girl, based that he choked this
as the master aro on Hakanui yet next and the
beef and lamb slot. Graham Evans

Bleep! with Ana Navarro

Fear thrives in silence and confusion. Ana Navarro rejects both. Her voice is an antidote to today’s chaos. Her new podcast, Bleep! with Ana Navarro, takes on today’s most pressing issues with the voices most connected to it: decision-makers, political leaders, cultural shapers, and people on the frontlines of the story. The conversations acknowledge the emotions we all feel—despair, sadness, fear— but emerge with knowledge, perspective, and hope. The belief is simple: fearless dialogue can transform fear into courage, and courage into change. When fear dominates the headlines, this show digs deeper. Because information, debate, and conversation don’t just ease fear, they give us power to shape the future.
