Speaker 1 (00:03):
The Musters on the Farm, brought to you by Southland
District Council working together for a better Southland.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Every little word that you say to me keeps my mind.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Time surasday afternoon on the Muster, starting off with Jason Herex,
South con Federated Farmer's President.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good afternoon, Jason.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Good afternoon. How are you today, mate?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Really good? I have the first look.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
The boys have started playing squash and I ended up
at the Gorse squash courts tnc courts yesterday. I haven't
picked up a record for five or six years, ended
up smashing a ball around for half an hour before tennis.
Whether it was the wisest thing I've ever done, I
wasn't too sure at the time, but I woke up
this morning and it was actually pretty good, So yeah,
I'm not too bad.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Well that's impressive. You normally find muscles you don't know
you have when you when you jump on the squash
court for the first time.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yeah, well it's been quite a while and you can
certainly feel it, Like you say, different muscle groups work
when you're on the squash call. But nonetheless, no, it
was good really from your perspective, mate, how's everything been.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Oh, you know it's much the same old old on
on farm at the moment, and you know it is
wet still, it is improving, grasses growing, so you know
there is some softball bullets out there, which is good.
I can listen for us held up really well with
absolutely pumped the feed in and keep them, keep them

(01:27):
on the move. Flux is obviously well down on last
year in amal health issues you know, are pretty high.
Some things that are read up of late that we're
unexpected that we haven't seen for a long time. So
you know, it is a challenging season, but you know,
control the controllables and focus on on the end results
and you'll get through absolutely.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Hey, we'll touch on this first. Leave fishing game South
and fishing game. You're well documented, Staush, what's happening now?
Is there any resolution insight from your perspective?

Speaker 3 (01:58):
We're fishing game concerned from us is we're going to
keep pressure on them and try and get the outcome
and the outcomes as we've asked, the Minister removed the
advocacy away from fishing game for them to go back
to their core business. And there is a meeting that's
been organized with us in fishing game on Monday, So
we hope to get a revolution out of that and

(02:19):
we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Did it take much to get fish and game round
the table with feeds or are they pretty forthcoming?

Speaker 2 (02:25):
I'm not the one.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Who organized it. We've got a mediator who's the one
that has organized this meeting. So you know, we'll sit
down at the table. And they agreed to meet with us,
and we agreed to meet with them, so you know,
which is what we always want. We always want open
dialogue and an open door policy that you know, they've
got an issue that can always come and talk to us.

(02:47):
That we haven't had that luxury in the past where
they've turned down meetings with us previously. So he's hoping
we get to get a resolution out of this one.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Well, this could be the ice break of Jason. You
might be singing comeboy around the campfire next week.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Who knows of.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
How miracles do happen from time to time?

Speaker 2 (03:02):
And okay, Jange attact.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Now, what's the south and real support trust over the
the this week and into next week as we are
talking about mindset and given what's happened down here, Jason,
it's been an absolute basketcase of a spring and still
a lot of people amping to get on the tractor.
I think what people need to realize and we just
need to reiterate the messaging isn't We're talking about this
with Steve O Henderson shortly, but just about everybody being

(03:27):
in the same boat at the moment.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Absolutely, you know. And it's not just farmers on the ground,
it's all our oral professionals as well, right and they're
out there doing the mahi, doing the hard draft. And
it shows the metal of people in South London and
what sort of attitudes that they have when they still
prepared to get stuck in and help out they are
and we're seeing a result of that with all the

(03:49):
community coming together with all of these events and so
forth to get farmers off farm and show support you
know where they can and who like the amount of
events that are on that have been going, you know,
really really impressed me the way that the whole communities
have rarely around one another, got together and tried to

(04:10):
help one another out right. So yes, it has been
an absolute, like to put put it bluntly, a bitch
of a season and to be honest, and I haven't
seen a season like this for quite some time. But again,
you've got to look at it from the perspective controlling
the controllables and then try and just grind through the
rest of it on a daily basis, and you know,

(04:32):
utilizing the services that are there to help you get
through and get the results. I mean, yes, I mean
we're all we're all sick of hearing that the sun
will come out one day and and things will come right.
But we've got to look at the here and now
and what we can do for one another to help
each other get through.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
As a national body of feeds and constant dialogue with
the team down here regarding the situation.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, ringing me daily, you know, so they're just to
see how things are going. We've got our Adverse Advanced
Coordinator on the phone. They're attending all of these RAG
group meetings that we have with the Raw Support Trust
and the councils and so forth. So we've got plenty
of support from the national body. They're definitely offering their
support as much as they can and offering solutions and

(05:19):
ideas on what we can do to put things in
place to help people when when you know those adverse
situations so it's good having the advice and support from
other provinces who have been through the same thing.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, great point you brought up before too, Jas.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Regarding reural professionals, I mean, it's not just farmers, it's
you've got accountains out there, You've got bankers, you've got agronomus,
You've got anyone and everyone going around. And a lot
of people I speak to are saying at the moment,
they're just sitting there and being in there for people
to chew on at the moment, given the situation.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
But you understand why too. You can't underestimate that.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
No, you can't. And you know, I'll use fun consultants
as an example, right. They're there to help out farmers
in these situations and they put the best laid plans
on paper doesn't always come to fruition, right, And they're
the first ones that get their atitued when when plans
don't come through or nothing, it's up and hasn't worked.
So you know, we've got to got to be respectful

(06:17):
for one another and take your head off to these guys.
And you know that's just one example. We've got the
vets and and all of the other roles are rural
professionals that we have out there supporting us all and
everyone's in the same boat, right, So it's yeah, it
is really really humbling to see that everybody is grinding

(06:37):
in together on this and getting through.

Speaker 1 (06:40):
And that's the big thing to remember as well, just
staying glass how full knowing sus says people what you
think is like telling them to say key, So you
just got to reiterate. It is a situation that everybody
is involved. When forecasters looking better next week too, so boom,
there you go off the caf.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Yeah, exactly, and before you know we're going to be
having tractors and paddicts. I'm getting things so and down,
getting solids done, getting valage done.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
The next challenge will be controlling the feed when it
does actually, you know, start growing out right in and
then when those were all professionals really come to the forefront.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Jason Hererick is self Confederated Farmers. Appreciate your time when
the master is always.

Speaker 3 (07:19):
Mate, You're welcome and you have a good afternoon.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Jason Hererick at a South Confederated Farmers. Yeah, on the
squash court for the first time yesterday because the boys
have started taking out lessons surprised the South this morning.
Considering the state of me, I'm still up and kicking,
so i'll take that up next. On a Thursday afternoon.
From Derry and Z, let's catch up with Keey Buckingham.
