Our first guest today to kick us off on the Master,
we are heading down the road to John Pemberton, who
is having a typical monday on farm. John, how are
you this afternoon?

Yeah? You good to live yourself there.

You're not not too bad. A bit of a new
thing today, but we're managing not to blow the place up,
so all is good for a Monday.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Oh, you're pretty brave. Well done. What's happening on farm?
Speaker 1 (00:24):
You'll be in winter mode now, dright off and all that.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, yep, we're just tarling to the who got done
last week. I'm just heading up to Central Daya. Actually
gave a look at their they've gone over the weekends,
settling into grazing. Any are just sort of the final
stages of this kishue build, so yeah, sort of a
number of contractors on site putting in windows, sparkes, plumbers, engineers, builders,
(00:50):
so yeah, sort of at the the bit where all
the final touches to get done. But it seems to
take a lot of a lot of work for that
to come together because it's all the netty green stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
To drying off and you're wintering there your cows off farm. Obviously,
how much over the winter, do you go visit them
and have to deal with them or you're pretty hands
off and you've got a really good grazer there that
takes a handle of that.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
No, we've got Yeah, so we try and catch up
in the first weekend going up, and then every fortnight
after that and then start of July we definitely go
through and just anything that looks like it hasn't stilled,
then we'll either bring it home or separate it. But
we obviously we go through an agent as well, so
they have an agent. I've got an agent myself. So
(01:33):
there's sort of four people involved in the in the
contract and that's sort of how it's managed, and that
seems to work quite well.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Communication will be the key thing throughout the winter, exactly.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Communication expectation. As long as you run stands what I
was trying to achieve, it goes to plan.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, So busy on farm with that shared exciting getting
to that near the end and being able to look
towards a new season.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah. Look, it's going to be a bit of a
game changer. The staff. I've got an old twenty eight
a side hearing bonus delt under an apple Field's conversion
in ninety one, so even then with secondhand plant so
we've got stuff that you could probably was operational back
in the seventies, i'd say, some of the milk pumps
and stuff. So we really looking forward to that. So
we're actually hosting a field day with ourselves and Deering
(02:20):
Z have teamed up and we're having a field day
this coming Friday at eleven am at five oh seven
Pioneer Highway. Just I guess going through the whole process
of how we've converted an organic cheep farm to dairy
in the last two years of sort of going through
that process and just I guess with legislation, how we
managed it, how we've worked with the local run hunger fishing,
(02:43):
game dock. Obviously being by the river, we've got Lind's
land as well, So how we work through all those
parties to pretty much end somewhere that's tenable for all
parties before we actually submitted into the process of consenting.
And obviously we've built a feed pad, solar array with batteries,
(03:03):
new road tree and just sort of showing you know
what you know, sheds and stuff's got a little bit
more expense in the last decade. You could say that
also there's some pretty cool stuff that's coming online, So
just trying to showcase. Look, you know, there's certainly opportunity
for land news change, but how do we go about
it slightly differently because you know, after the oce even
(03:24):
she was a bit a bit of a you know,
just in on a bear wind get worth it, but
we sort of do know a bit more about our
impacts on the environment and such like, and so how
do we how do we work with that and we've
done things like in sets such as a large wheatland
or what are other people's options, So just just kind
of you know, highlight you know, we can do it.
We's got it slightly different, which is probably no different
(03:44):
to how it's always been as science has come along.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Well, it's really linking back to and highlighting some of
the great work it's being done the dairy sector. And
when we look back at the announcement that was made
at Field Days last week for eighteen point three million
dollars in the government funding towards U seven near co
funded program Court Responsible Daring with Dairy and Z there's
quite some alignment there showcasing that whole low footprint, high
productivity on dairy farms with what you're doing there.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, yeah, you know, through a nutfield. I was lucky
enough to go to Chesapick Day and such like in
the States and see examples of when things go on
peer shape. We have a banded together and as a
whole community, not just the farmers, but the whole community,
because everyon does have an impact and how they work
through that to improve the environment. And I think it's
good to see that the discussion is now happening because
(04:31):
I do think New Zealand has been possibly as book
because on a weave it lately, and we can't be
blind to the fact that we don't want to go
back to that, you know, to us at the Derby
dairy campaign that was run, whether people agreeable or not,
it was quite damaging and quite it was quite hard
for the rural folk to sort of deal without, I suppose,
(04:51):
like as a dairy farmer, was quite confronting. And I
think if we don't want to see that happen again,
we've got to be more transparent and I think lead
a bit more than rather than just sort of going
oh well, if it's a DM and I will do that.
I think we'll start looking at right, how do we
take it a step further and you know it actually
(05:11):
works through what are the true costs of our business
and does it worth us getting all tangled up and
upset rather than sort of you know, a word of
compromise feels like we're sort of right now and you're
still on the day we will be illustrating the financial
gains of what we can do. Is still it's still
exciting to be involved in this industry and sometimes just
(05:32):
a slight different change of approach makes it a weave.
It easy to work through.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
And you've gone overseas, you said where it has gone
through this whole build and this whole development piece. Do
you think what you learned from overseas you've brought a
lot of that pieces back to be able to make
some of those decisions as you've gone about it.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, we were sort of in the process before said
enough we would sort of just started the process. And
so I guess what it did was giving me far
more confidence in what I was doing and well example,
like we haven't built a barn, and just me personally
from what I experienced overseas, I've always been on the
fence about them, because I think they've certainly got their place,
but the timing and myself going through Europe and seeing
(06:12):
some of the challenges that are having personally, I'm not
motivated to build a freestyle bar on my property. I'm
not saying it's never been an option because we don't
know where the future is going to take us. But
it did give me a bit more confidence around how
we were planning it and what we were doing.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
And as you has now finished up the season, are
comfortable if where you finished?
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, look, we a probably a little bit down on
one of the farms in production, but look, we had
had a heard sale there. We did ask a premium price,
so we were probably committed to making sure the cows
were in presentable condition. All that and you know, you've
become very focused more on care condition than we did
on milk production to the back half of the season.
(06:53):
But look, you know we're still getting paid very well.
And as far as seasons go, I think this would
have to be the best April May even into June
that I've ever experienced. There's been quite phenomenal, even in
it was a bit week today, but even the weekend
it was still very warm and yeah, we'll take it.
What's zeeb. But it also does make you nervous. I
just hope we're not falling into the season has been
(07:15):
one or two months later than normal because it would
be nice to have a good spring for once, but
it has been quite an amazing second half of the season.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
We want winter and winter at the end of the day.
So it sounds like if anyone wants to see what
you've been up to, hit along on Friday, was it

Yeah, eleven o'clock till four thirty quite a big day.
We've got about eight and nine speakers sort of formatted
why are we doing it and here are we're doing it?
So we've sort of got peered up those either consultants
or people that actually be involved in what we've actually
done on the process. So there's not really me speaking.
It's going to be the proficials that are involved. So

hopefully there's some there's some good some good leads and
connections and it will be time for people to connect with
those people afterwards as well, being that we are making
it quite a bit so the end of it as well, well, there.
