the Sergeant Dan Farming round Up where we speak to
different farmers around the Southern region every Monday here on
the Muster. And that is thanks to Sergeant Dan stock
foods here and good John.

Ohouse thanks, yeah, good Andy heat on. That can't really
complain blue sky. It's well weather, it's not too bad
for where are we getting towards small year? Two thirds
of the way through July. Carving is just around the corner.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Oh, it's been ridiculous setembers having eight block, it's sort
of talk of something like that. It's either been really
really good days or crappy days. Not no real dreary
sort of standard winter. It's been phenomena really. The old
Robert Lamar is still going every ten days at the moment.
It's fun real.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
As far as growth in general, though, what are your
covers like?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Ah, yeah, we're a bit, we're just tight. And the
new block that we brought out and decided to soult
once we hit May, and that wasn't really really a plan.
So yeah, we've got to where we can just come up.
We'll have to smack with a bit of SA the
soulf has sort of been stripped right out of it
really so. But now look it's a new development block

and it's days of the challenges, right, you can't. It's
certainly behaving different to the home original block and that's
really when you bring in a new land.

You've had a lot of redevelopment going on on that
block though as well. It's been hictic over the past
couple of months.
Speaker 3 (01:35):
Yeah, yeah, even Yeah, there isn't any time off over
this winter, to be honest, So weekends and weekends are
full with catching up on what I've missed out of
being down to council, this local government reforms, creating a
fear bit of work and such like in a new RMA.
So yeah, pretty full calendar at the moment. So looking
forward to getting through that phase of council and looking

forward to completing the shed build which we're about ninety
nine point nine seen done. We'll have cows in the
yard tomorrow, so yeah, sort of, I guess I'm looking
forward to the to the back half of August on
to get through the through the middle of the carving
because we've got kare sitting the calves done at the
ground now and the heaf and mobs, so yeah, but
sort of that messy sort of crunch time outside of

what would be a conversion where you so they don't
really have a routine the day, so that normally turns
up about mid August. So yeah, we've been to get
through the next few weeks.

Well, it's a polar opposite of last year for you,
John O. Were you sitting on your.

Not field Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did do my best
to make it look like it's a bit of a jamp,
but there were some pretty big some pretty big days.
There's a couple of two three nights sleep between meetings
and flights and all that. So yeah, I am looking
forward to some point actually having a holiday at some point.
Good but no, it was it was a hell of

a challenge and certainly wouldn't have it be able to
fit it into the what I got going on at
the moment. So sometimes you get laky with the opportunity's
life throws at you and the top books out right looking.

Back on you enough field experience with time well sped.

I absolutely yep, Andy, And I just encourage anybody he's
thinking about doing the callogs or enough Field if you
got inquisitive about it, just yeah, reached out to the
rule leaders and you see how it can work. And everyone,
you know, everyone's busy, and you do go and think,
I just don't have time for this, but they do

me the people that can make it happen to make
it work, and yeah, absolute game changer for us, our business,
even my children going forward by meeting people that are
coming staying with us from around the globe. And that'll
continue for the next twenty years, I hope, you know,
So just really interesting conversations at the dinner table, which
I think the kids is pretty exciting. Actually, you know,

think of my childhood and busy working around the farm
and didn't really get that engagement. So I'm hoping it's
sort of elak frogs at kids ahead of ahead of
us the parents a bit. So you know, it's like
you're just trying to get the next generation to punch
along a.

Bit quicker carving. When do you start officially?
Speaker 3 (04:06):
I think today's actually yeah, today's actually for the official
kickoff for the heavens. So far over two thirty five,
so hence I need to hit Chaos of the yard
and have a sort out because they're just not really
organized at the moment. So yeah, pressures on to get
them through, get some drenching minerals in them. And we've

just had KOs turn up last week they kick off
and a bit another week they're starting to bag up.
So they've been up Central for the winter that they've
done really well. Yeah, I'm hoping we don't have too
much snow coming to the forecast. We've been luckily for
trucking as the sort of dribble, so there every a
couple of weeks to bring a few unitlot time. So yeah,
been quite an impressive season really for ase winters go.
(04:48):
Just hoping like hell, we don't have reas plus two years.
Springs have certainly been a bit of a head stretcher.
But look, we've got this new fee pad which is
going to be a bit of a game changer for
us around how we manage those those with periods and
feed the supplement too.

Just regarding this local government reform before you wind up, John,
you're an environment south and counselor, I dare say it's
been pretty hectic.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yeah, it has, I think. I think Look, we had
a bit of a early last week with all the
other TA councilors in Southern District ic C and GC.
I think, look, all we were trying to show was
what our role is, what we do and the challenges
around I guess been sidelined by the government and allowing

other counselors who accuse you don't have a full comprehension
of what's involved around managing catchments, making decisions of what
a local government reform would look like. And I think
our chair in Advice you did an accept a good
job illustrating that, and there was some sentence. The feedback
(06:01):
I've had was it was certainly appreciated by the other
councils the information they got from the day, and I
think that's that's our role as counselors is to highlight
the challenges where we see the challenges and trying to
bring solutions and just trying to make something that's going
to last into the future, because you know, end of
the day, we're not building this around individuals, building this
(06:23):
around the structure off they can look like for the community.
And obviously and certainly quite a challenging political phase at
the moment, you know, the government was sort of separate
where regional council has gone by twenty twenty seven they
came BAI and actually when they dug it a deep
and saw the complexity of a few things, they decided
to beat people on that one. Go back to twenty
(06:44):
twenty eight. So who knows what's happening and who knows
where the head Start program lands. That's about my pay grade.
But I just think we just need to keep having
these conversations and that head Start timeline is running up
on us pretty quick. Let's not waste time arguing. Let's
just keep looking at solutions and what people can bring
to the table and what's space of south from moving forward?

And we do have some you know, if you look
around the country and you know Southam has been moving
forward and the stuff already quite a bit. And I
guess my biggest worry is if we look at national
standardization around environmental stuff, and you know, I think we
could all be honest and say, if we had taranicky
rules around effort management in Southland, I think everybody the
community quite disappointed that that would be the new minimum standard.
(07:29):
So just those kind of things that they've taken account
whatever we achieved since the formation of Environment South and yes,
his challenges around compliance and such light. But at the
end of the day, we're all working towards trying to
have a bit of South and for the for our
next generation. So I think that is happening, and all
the politics from central government just can quite often blur
(07:52):
the lines. And yeah, I just really hope we keep
that local voice and that local influence and how we
do things down here.
