Speaker 1 (00:09):
This is the Muster one Hakanui. Kayleen Bennett is our
next guest. Now we all hear about ural mental health
and it's a massive, massive issue. But Kayleen's doing something
with the Callogg's Rural Leadership program. It's called is the
car Park too Full? No, we're not talking about trying
to get a car park in a CBD. We're talking

(00:29):
about the top three inches, but for women in the
rural industries as such. And Kayleen's doing a survey as well,
and she's keen to get some input regarding this, and
she joins us this afternoon on the Mustard.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Good afternoon, Hi Andy, thanks very much for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
I appreciate your time, especially for something like this. Kayleen, firstly,
explain to us what was a catalyst for you wanting
to do something like this.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
So I am a mama's and dairy farming, run my
own business as well, and in twenty twenty four we
had a daughter that had a surgery that resulted in
a treatment injury and it took mentally. I really struggled

(01:23):
to see that. And there was a certain day that
my husband was away working and I was running the
farm as well as dealing with this treatment injury, and
I was sitting in a doctor's surgery this particular day
and text mentor of mine and said, Oh, I can't
do this anymore. I need some help. And so that

(01:47):
led me on my journey and it's just resonated with
me ever since, and conversations that I have on a
daily or weekly basis with different women in the end
and egg sector has just led me to realize that
there's so much more that could be done out there.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
So was that the moment for you in life? Kaylee?
Do you realize that things had to change?

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, well, it's definitely.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
What changed from your perspective, I suppose.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
I think reaching out for that help and making making
a decision that things did have to change. And I
became very passionate about that change and ensuring that I
wasn't going to stay in the position I was in.
I was incredibly overwhelmed and I just couldn't keep doing
the level of work I was trying to do. And

(02:42):
so I did go through a coaching process and it
was the process was really good. It made me realize
that I, like I could sit down and have a
drink or read a book without feeling guilty or that

(03:03):
I didn't have to be involved in every single project
in our community. And while I'm really passionate about it
and about our communities, there is a time that you
can step back and it'll be okay.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
So just through your findings or what you're doing at
the moment, how bad or just what is a situation
regarding rural mental health and woman.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I think that it's been. The feedback has been incredible,
and the numbers of surveys that I've had returned have
been awesome opposite one hundred and sixty responses this morning,
and they've certainly indicated that the car park is incredibly
full for a large percentage, probably about eighty percent of

(03:53):
women at the moment of the respondents. And so yet
there needs to be some change is happening so that
women can feel better on a daily basis.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
So your journey as such was a catalyst for getting
involved for the Kellogg's Rural Leadership program around this.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, I think over carving time in the spring just
been I saw an ad for it an email and
I thought, oh, that looks like that is something that
is me And I did speak to my husband and
just said that I'm keen to do that. But I

(04:34):
needed fall backing from him and our whole family because
it is a significant time commitment. But it's been incredibly
motivating to create this report and do this research. So
so far, so good.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Do you think there's a stigma almost that females have
to stay the strong, silent type through all of this.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, incredibly, And there's probably just like there's a difference
between how I think if a man is struggling with
their mental health, they are more likely to withdraw. But
my research has shown that rates of depression are higher
in women than in men, and so connection and that

(05:24):
is incredibly important for women to ensure that their mental
health is good. But my research has through my surveys,
has also shown that both connections you're on yourself as
well as with friends are the first things to go
when things get busy.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So what is it that you like females to do today?
As far as the survey and participate, here's your chance
to give people an idea of what they need to do.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
So I have there's a couple of lengths. One on
NZ Farming has facebook page has got a link to
search for it's Kaylen Bennett. Look for m Z farming
and Farming mums and z also has a link, but alternately,
you could email me on Kayleen at Beach Valley dot

(06:14):
co dot zed and I can send you a link
for the survey.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Yeah, we might even try and get that link up
on the muster on Hocken Facebook page as well. So ideally,
how many correspondents are you hoping for?

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Guy's a limit at this stage. I think I'll close
it off on about the start of the second week
of April. And yeah, but the more the Maria just
gives a greater indication and a show's bigger need.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Well, somebody's listening to this and thinking I need to
get involved with this project. What are your words off
the cuff to say to them? Kayleen, know that you've
been there, don't.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Be scared to reach out. Just know that things can
change and life can be.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Now, as far as the Callogg's Leadership program, what is
it Like I say it was a catalyst of you
getting involved. What's been your biggest take about being involved
with the program so far?

Speaker 2 (07:18):
That there is some incredible people out there and incredible
support in those people, and the journey is limitless. Really
you can just yeah, go I here limits, so just
go for it and reach out.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Good on your Kayleen, thanks for your time on the
Muster this afternoon. Congratulations and what you're doing as well
regarding rareal mental health, especially for women. And we'll do
it best to get this link on the Muster page
and hopefully you can collaborate some results and you can
go forward from there. Appreciate your time.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Awesome, Thanks very much, Andy, Kayleen Bennett.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Is the car park too full? It's all part of
her callogg's Rural Leadership program talking about the mental load
on rural women. So, like I say, we'll try and
get that link up on the Muster page or we'll
make it available because certainly a great initiative and all
the best of Kaylen with this endeavor. Tash Clay's up
next then to wrap up the hour of Nathan Nelson

(08:25):
