of dairy en Z Keeley. Good afternoon. Carving is around everywhere.

It is it is. It seems like it's come on
suck and fast too for a few people, which is
good and bad. Right, keeps it over and done with quicker.
That certainly makes for some long days, I'm sure.

Well, the weather's with you. It's a good thing, yeah, totally.

Yeah, and it has been relatively nice for the most
part so far.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Well, I think we do about fifteen degrees with something
ridiculous tomorrow. It seems like the tropics when you get
to those temperatures.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, I was might have to get the old pins
out for the sun like that.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Well, there you go, hey, talking today about ad lib,
caf feeding a lot of calves around and just thinking
about all matters growing.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, definitely. So the EdLib system, I suppose, is one
it's come to be more and more popular over the
last few years as people get busier and you know
a lot of mums out there with kids in toe
as well, and twice a day feeding does get quite busy.
So EdLib is definitely one of those things that is
getting pretty hot out here, and so we're really fortunate
(01:27):
that we've had a bit of insight to this. Well,
you know, our Animal Animal's team up in Hamilton, and
so there was a lot of chat around ed lib
feeding you know out there online and stuff, but not
a lot that has been like researched in New Zealand.
And so that team before carving started come together and

have developed an ed lib car feeding guide. So yeah,
that's been specifically designed for the New Zealand system. So
that's super cool. That can be found online. So I
guess just some key messages to come out of that
if you haven't seen it and are try going to
try headlib once you get into the sick of carving
this year. There are just a few key things too,
(02:13):
I guess make sure that you've got in mind. So
a few of the key points would be, you know,
keeping mobs between twenty ten and twenty calves to and
keeping those groups consistent sized in the providing the other
one's around the size is just providing one teat for
every three to five calves and making sure that yeah
(02:36):
they're getting checked regularly daily, filling up r of drums
like from like fresh milk, every day rather than putting
fresh milk on top of old milk. There's another key
one there, and making sure that if you are going
to be doing the ad LIB system to budget for
higher milk use and so cold milk might reduce bacteria
(02:59):
back to your real growth and the milk butt calves
might drink more to compensate for that. So yeah, and
the other one just around ed levers doesn't. It's not
a satin forget system, so we do still need to
be making sure and you know, I'm sure people don't
just sit and forget anyway, but making sure that if
you are going to try that system, to make sure

you're checking the calves individually and know the signs of
health and illness and so if you Yeah, there's a
guide that has been just released I think it was
in July, and so that can be found on the
darien Zed website around Yeah, it's just called the ad
LIB Calf Feeding Guide and there and as well. Actually,
the other cool new resource that was released just before

carving started was the Calf Rearing Guide, And so that
calf rearing Guide it covers everything from setting up calf pens,
calf sheds all the way through to you know the
weaning stage and waits and stuff like that. So it's
a massive docu, but definitely one. I was just flicking

through it this morning and thinking, man if I had
a new calf rera on farm, then this would be
exactly what I'd be putting in front of them to
set them up. Well, you know, don't have to read
every chunk of it, you know, the whole thing from
start to finish right now, but as we move through
the phases you know, from colostteral management and then eventually

it we need. There's all different sections in there, so
really cool guide and.

We're going to have a good spring here in the south.
Touch would but you're just looking at all the positives.
Nonetheless having a plan B if you need. It's something
to have in your mind day.

Yeah, definitely. You know, we've still got a lot of
cows on crop, a lot of cows being in spring,
a paddocks on pasture and it's it is, it has
been wet, and so just making sure that if you
have got cows you know outside or potentially still on crop,
that we do need to be making sure if the

weather forecast is coming in bed that you do have
a plan be up your sleeve for taking cows off
muddy peedicks, muddy crop peddicks, giving another option if it's
needing to change the direction and once you're grazing to
avoid wet patches or where soils might be a bit
heavier than those type of things still need to be maintained.

And know it is tricky when you're in the depths
of carving to remember or to make time for that
type of thing. But still, those cows, you know, have
got a heat of a season in front of them
still and making sure that you know they're not succumbing
to any bad weather and making sure that they're still

being prioritized, Yeah, is really important.

Yes, definitely always on there, especially around that you know,
