Speaker 1 (00:00):
How a un sound a scratch out ticket back two twelve.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Pats and take it Downs? Where always still time?
Speaker 3 (00:10):
Welcome back to the muster. Nigel Woodhead Farms in South Otago.
And I'm sure he's a fan of Luke Combs. Good afternoon, Nige.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Heuse eggs?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Hey don't Andy? Yeah? I love Luke Combs back. Yeah,
it was the best concert in Auckland a couple of
years ago.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah, I remember you're going to them, And basically that's
the reason I played the music today. I know you're
a big fan of this song here. When it rains
and pause, it's an absolute Jeffer Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
I know, and it's quite act at the moment actually
when it.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Rains at pause. Wetherwise, what's going on? How things in
South Otaga.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Are wat really? Wit? That's all we can I got
like child drones running flat out the other day. Yeah
they've probably eased off a wee bit now, but yeah,
another thirty odd mills this week, so just the top
us up pushed the drought out for another couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
So you don't want the concrete getting dry, I suppose
now I can't have that.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
I can't have that. Although we've got whole crop silids
that's ready to chop and a pedicant grass to go
on top of it. And yeah, yeah. The contractor ring
not last night night before and said you want to go,
you know, it's still too wet. And then they were
busy yesterday. So I hope I don't live to regret
(01:22):
putting them off. But hopefully it sounds like Sunday Monday
might be slightly better days. We might we might get
it on Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Well, a lot of people around northern south and are
still after a bit of moisture.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah, I've God have made at Riversdale. Ye, shout out
to Pencil and yeah, they're screaming for moisture. So they
came some of hers for a couple of weeks if
they want.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
I mean, it's a damned if you do, damned if
you don't scenario.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
At the moment, the arable guys are wanting to get
the harvesters in the peddic By the sounds of it,
last night was all guns blazing. But then about three
o'clock this morning, I got waken up by rain. It
was pretty heavy here and go.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yeah, I woke up in the middle of the night
couldn't tell you what time to rain on the roof too.
So look, I'm not going to do too much complaining
because I've well documented all my significant amount of winging
I've done over the past few years about dry summers.
So you can't have it dry and complain and then
have it wet and complain too. So we'll take it.
(02:17):
You have plenty of grass, and yeah, some stocks seem
to be doing all right. I reckon the other feed
is probably a bit rich and going through kettle a bit,
so probably not getting the cattle growth rates I want.
But well you might throw a bit of hay or
rough baylor yet to the next week and see if
that helps growth rates a bit.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
So you're on target with the lambs getting them away.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. We were way a handful of
lambs the other day just that were on summer crop
and they'd been they'd been on summer cross three weeks exactly,
and I can't remember how many kilos I'd put on,
but they were doing three hundred and forty grams and
that includes that included their transitions, So pretty happy with that,
(02:58):
and they went on a fresh new peddican. We'll we'll
put some of them on a truck and about ten
days time, so they'll be some big lambs there by
then hopefully which will be good. And grasslands are still
done all right, So you've got a big big more
of them drinks in the last couple of days and
they're looking looking good and fit and healthy. So just
same as the kettle, trying to sort of get their
(03:19):
feed balance right, keep the fresh green feed in front
of them, but make sure there's a bit of fire
are there too.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Because the way you've been there, what you talked about before,
having those dry seasons, having that summer feeds got you
through those summer crops as such.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Oh yeah, well, you know, in the last four years
we've gone from no summer crops to twenty height years
and which is not teen percent of the platform, but
you know, I get well eight percent anyway, so it's
quite a percentage of the platform that we've got. And
summer crops with the kale and plantain, that's versatile, right,
So we're yeas at this time of year and then
(03:54):
last year we mayce it on it and then we'll
lock it up again and we'll get it in the
winter time. And having the plantain underneath. We get to
graze it, shit stock on it in the spring, and
if you look after that peddic in the winter, you know,
we can end up with twelve to fifteen US so
to hit the ear on it in the spring, so
it keeps up with permanent grass, piece of cake.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Tell you what the price for store lambs at the
moment has gone through the roof. We're just lambs buying
them in the yards or what ever. A lot of
people saying they're not far away from prime price.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, well, store lambs and store kettle. I was on
the phone to on the phone to a couple of
stock agents this morning, just discussing options, and you know,
stare lambs and store kedder are all worth a fortune.
So yeah, I'm just sort of weighing up what we
do where we you know, flogs and yeeling kettle laugh
or I kind of want to buy some kettle, but
(04:45):
it's hard to find just what I want at the
price I want to pay, So I know, I just
I head a line line organized. But then one day,
once the seller told me the price, I bought a
bit and said good luck selling them at that and
that's what they sold for. So that will teach me
(05:07):
for being being a bit tight. But yeah, well there's
not a huge number of kettle on the market. People
still got feed and it's not really cart selling season yet,
so there's still time before the winter.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
But you're just going to look at the overriding positors
for the sector at the moment.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Nights.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
We've talked about this in the past, well documented yet
again about you've had your struggles off the weather. At
this time of year, we're seeing record prices and they
are record prices too.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Oh yeah, look, I mean, you know what what people
are asking for store stock and for like yealing kettle
and things are just reflective of the market. I've got
no problem people asking those moneys, asking those prices. It's
just a reflection of of the market. You know, fear
a couple of weeks ago and you know, four hundred
(05:53):
odd dollars getting paid for too, Well, that's only double
the price of a reasonable lamb at the works year,
which is about you as a ratio goes about right,
So sounds expensive, but you know, as long as you're
buying and selling on the same market, it's all relative, right,
So that's just yeah, I mean, the market's the market.
Everybody's polished. It's a good thing. You don't. Don't get
(06:16):
me wrong, I'm not complaining. I'm only complaining because I
want to buy keddle and it's hard to justify spending
big money, but that's just what you've got to do.
So it's it's positive times. It's awesome. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Now we catch you on one ago this afternoon, you
trying your head and a little bit of florist work.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Allow, kid, So I'm helping help in the end. We've
got a mate's wedding up here this afternoon and Lean's
doing the flowers and some of the set up for
the wedding. So I'm just yeah, got my probably third
or fourth job had on at the moment, helping set
up a wedding. So that yeah, I'm sitting out at
(06:55):
the venue at the moment. It's out at Mangaware. It's
beautiful day out here. And who's back in the wannaker
in a minute and get ready to come back out
for the winning ceremony. It's going to be good. So yeah,
we we've been fled out the last couple of days
getting all these flowers organized for this winning It's but stressful,
but we got there in need.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
So it's not going to be like the American pie
move where everything goes kick.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
No, no, it's all well organized and someone's truning go
uh well organized and yeah, like they look like aliens
doing the flowers and sign and pieces. And this is
a winning planner here as well, who's doing a really
good job. So it's going to be all going to
playing lock clockwork. It's gonna be good.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Good on you, mate, We'll leave you to your florists work.
We'll catch up a gay noise, appreciate your.
Speaker 1 (07:41):

and direct the master. We're going to catch out with
