up with Steve Henderson, dairy farmer down there, and he
works very hard every day to pay the bills on
our abbat Tuesday. Money, money, money, Steve, How are you
this afternoon?

Thanks Olivia. I was just near listen to that song
and reminiscing with the last two days I've marked around
with about teen sheep, and now I see what sheep
cockies get up to you. They make money. They work
on the sheep all day and fill in the days,
and I think we only drench them and show them.
But it's taken two days, so you no wonder the
sheep cockees don't get much done.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
They probably look over the fence and think similar things
about you guys.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, no, I don't envy them. We only had a
thin sheep, and yeah, it makes kettle and dairy farming
reasonably easy. So no, it's a very valid song.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
But I'm sure you've got some wool in that wardrobe
of viewers for winter.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yeah, we've put a padlock on the ronador actually of
the wall sheet, so we'll just wait till we've got
a full fair fall in case someone comes and blogs.

It good work winter mode. Now things slowed down on farm,
giving those jobs done.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, there's always a going to stop sorting going on,
making sure they're fitting into the craft and moving veils
and bits and pieces, so you want to try to
get that done. The whole days are just short enough
now we're getting closer.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Shortest day on Sundays. Are you happy we ended up
at the end of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yep, yep, we are. Obviously it was just a good
everage season. We were, you know, pretty weakiking in the spring,
colder temperatures and we might have got one probably too
tanes scraft down here the normal. So yeah, as a
whole we ended pretty well, good on car rights and
good ability to call some cows and get back on track,
(01:36):
and ended with some pretty good covers too. So no,
all onwards and upwards for this coming season, and everything's
looking pretty good.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
So are you calling out those cows? Are you got
some good replacements coming through that they'll join the herd
this year?
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah? We do yet. Yeah, so we've we're rare about
twenty five percent replacements, so we're time to get a
few deaths and bits and pieces. You're down to go
needs twenty one twenty two percent coming through. So we've
also tested for yone's, which we did kick out some.
As you look at them, they're good cares, but they're
going to be a bit of a hindrance going forward.
So we've called heavily on Yonis as well, so to

give us the ability, they'll probably kill or cow five to.

The main herd, just with lower PW and undesirable cares.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
So it's taken eighteen or twelve years to get to
that stage, but it's good to be able to come
out on those figures rather than have TOS.

Also been in the process of changing contract Wolkers. Has
that whole process gone.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, that's right. So yep, Kem and Nicole they finished
up with us. I've done three years with us and
they've gone fifty to fifty sea milking, so you know,
a huge credit to them to do that. Trees and
we've just taken on darl and Lucy. So that process
started with Kem and Nicole when we knew their plan
that they were going to be hopefully three years and

she milking. So that was an effack of the mind,
you know. No, end of December last year they mentioned
that they were actively looking for smoking jobs. But it
made up to them even in the back of their
mind that we have to actively look for contract milkers.
So that whole process was pretty easy. A lot of
us just basically on.

The Facebook page and as a reputation of Kem and
the cole on that property too, so a lot of
people knew the property.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
And they worked in their favor. So yep, listening to
out come on board and first to Journe roll round
which was actually public holiday so seekind of June. Everything
was open and we had a good catch up with them.
And this is yeah, timely for the time of the year.
Obviously with the seemorking contract locally changing over a lot

of them are green coming into the community. So sit down,
just make sure they know you know what supplies you use,
were the local meat clinics, the expectations of the suppliers
and the meat clinics of what they deliver or we
have to go and get your product you machine testing?
Who does that rubble were changing? What's the criteria around that,

who you get it through and do they purchase it
order to farmone, approachase it or order it sorry, And
also a bit of that compliance stuff too, So obviously yes,
you've got to do your water takes and change your
person in charge for your earflood management nate side of things.
So make sure your pick has changed and not only

bringing these new ones on but also deleting the other
ones off it so they're not getting owners emails and
texts that are relevant to them.

Well to think about there isn't there. It's not just
a matter of moving in moving out.

No it's not. And you still go on and you've
got dairy companies to change. And then also it comes
down to their staff too, because we've had it before
where you have urban staff and they come in and
they let us don't arrive into the mailbox, they're going
to post them at the post shop, so you actually
have to let them know that they're on a real delivery. Now,

get that changed over to. So yeah, there's a lot
of things to go through, and it's probably.

Just keeping contact for that first month or six week
to make sure everybody on the same page and everybody's
understanding what what's expected and there's no hidden thin things happening.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
And then come around furcat allously not really because you
haven't brought it up.

Yeah, so just constant communication and making sure that everybody
is feeling comfortable in the new surroundings.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Definitely, Yeah, not being sure to ask the question, you know,
have you thought about this? That's from farm owner point
of view and also content point of views.

And that's probably when you go. Like you said, it
was easy process to go and find your contract milker,
but it's just not a matter of running you around
and apart from picking out a name.

It oh right, yep, yep, exactly that. And where those
contract milkers or milks have come from. Have they run
moile multiple farms? Have they as the first time contract milking?
Did they come out of a manager or so it's
all around the skill set to it and where you
need to time as you're focus on the business management
or is it actually kills and grass and they're really

good at business management. So yeah, I'm understanding where they're
skill sets and where you can put into try and
help them grow, so you know, hopefully in three years
they can be like Cam and Nicole and shot away
go fifty fifty. She marking the farm ownership.

It means health week this week from the fifteenth and
twenty first, and the stat's probably a wee bit alarming
for some, but one in four men won't live to retire,
and we know how men can be stubborn individuals. But
also you get busy on farming, you just forget that
you need to actually do you give yourself aware and
a fitness What do you guys do to ensure that

you're going to be running at one hundred percent come
the spring time as well?

Now that's a valid point. So what you could just
work hard and retire earlier so you do retire way
to do it, or if you want to do one,
a live a bit longer. I never really used to
think going to the gym and there. It was a
bit of a bloody, you know, pretty boys sort of
thing to do. But I try and get there twice
a week. Now your farming, I think has changed from

a physical thing, well probably a lot more physical when
you were younger as to now you're sort of on
the business side of things and you're certainly getting out there,
but probably not as much as you were. So getting
away and doing that twice a week and also probably
getting if you've got an other half or a wife to.

Book that stuff and for you you don't have to
be a gym bunny or you think it could be
as simple as I've got a week bit of off
time now in the winter a wee bit slower, book
yourself into the doctors and get yourself awaren funess.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, definitely, And if you can't do it, just mention it,
and I guarantee your partner or your wife they probably
want you around to help with the workload when you
do retire, so they will book you in and get
you sorted, and they'll probably even drop you off at
the doctor.

Nice because that is a good excuse to go for
some do some shopping at the same time. Thank you
