Speaker 1 (00:11):
This is the muster on Hakannui. We're away to Wai
Mumi next to catch up with Warren Ross, our resident
fishing and rallying corresponded here on the muster coincidentally, Well,
good afternoon, hell six.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah afternoon Andy end listeners.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
How's it been over the past couple of weeks? You
went away, you did your fishing trip. We'll talk about
that shortly, but firstly, ground conditions at waymomoo, A few
areas around the south still after some moisture. But it
sounds as though you're looking pretty good.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, no, we're we're sitting pretty good. I say so.
Since we've been away and come back. It's yeah, we've
had plenty of moisture and grasses taking along quite nstly
for the autumns now. We're sitting in quite a good place.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
So the covers are pretty much where you want them
to be.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, so there's yeah, we would just win some chaws
and calves to yesterday they before and yeah, they they're
just going onto you know six rade interests of feed,
good green lush feed, so you know there's in all
the hinds and fawns are on short well not short feed,
but good nice green grass, and yeah, it's there, just

(01:14):
going along quite nicely.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
How many cows do you run?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
We carved down about one hundred and forty or fifty
this year, so all those calves are actually worth like
gold at the moment. So we're just going to plan
with what what we're gonna do with them. You see,
what do.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
You think in this autumn sales perhaps, or what do
you go to land?

Speaker 2 (01:33):
We're in the past, we've actually just sold all our
hair for bulls live and then sold all the stairs
and then brought in a few usual heahers just to
make up numbers. So so then we've just got one
line of animals to worry about for the winter. But
this year I'm not sure whether it'd sell the whole
lot or or just yeah, to keep them what we're doing.

(01:54):
So but they're talking some good money for them anyhow.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
So you're just you're basing your decisions what the market's
going to do. And now you believe pretty favorably, well,
I think so.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, and so that's what I'm aiming to do at
the moment. So that's we're in a we're in a
good position at the moment anyhow.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
As far as the rat starting is end full mode.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yet we've got all our sires are out with the
with the hinds. So yeah, a couple of big boys
starting to get quite dominant. But I haven't actually heard
a lot of roaring going on from our velve heard
yet literally, so they must be starting to cranking it
very soon.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
You what is there? What brings it on? The roaring
as such and that mob.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
I guess it's the where the sires will probably get
come on season we had earlier due to that the
heind's been with them. But our guess for the velveling
mob is all to do with the weather. So soon
as you start get in a few cooler, cooler nights mornings,
which we've been getting nol stir, I would have thought
they would, yeah, we begin into it, but they are
they are on the part of the farm, so I

(02:53):
may not hear them.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
So it's just a matter of these longer nights you're
going to hear a bit more noise and it's pretty
distinguishable with the sound as well.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh no, absolutely a so yeah, yeah, it's a long nights,
all the mornings and and so forth that that sort
of brings them all on. You see, sir, Yeah, that
dog cranking it very soon.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I would have thought, well, at the moment of Villa's moisture,
you've had your window crops and the likes they'll be singing.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, no, window crops are looking good a so just
having a drive around, you know he's got home on
said days, just having a drive around and you know
the crops are doing well, and we've got the sculptor
on there for a bit just yesterday morning, I think
it was. So yeah, we sort of sat onto the
probably maintenance rereadliser. Next week I got a guest, so,
you know, just sticking into it.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
The diesel situation especially, you're hearing these stories in rural
Australia about rationing being an issue at the moment, Are
you concerned about that kind of thing happening over here
giving your operation.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yes to no. But we yestually don't burn a lot
of diesel this time of the year now on, so
we're probably pretty pretty lucky in that respect, so hopefully, yeah,
hopefully it won't be too much of a problem. So
we're lucky enough actually, And we were out of fuel
there before we got to Joe Doland, so we thought
her up before we left and not knowing that, not

(04:07):
knowing that what was going to happen this week, you see,
So we were quite quiet like in the respect.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
And you would have got there for under a dollar
fifty as well, probably wouldn't it.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, all the deed, I'm not sure how much it was,
but yeah, these was under a dollar fifty. So no, well, yeah,
yeah we struck that one lucky.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Well, just it was a case of the known this
time last week with the sales happening, then you were
able to you know, fell up at the tank for
about a dollar in the mid dollar fifties. At the
moment it's on discount day, two dollars twelve.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
So it's amazing what strange here, what one week can
do to do the things. So it's probably the biggest
thing for us is just what happens with the fertilizer prices.
But insane. That's probably all right for the season, I guess,
so we'll be going on the next was probably gonna
be the challenge for fertilizer.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
So how did you get on with fishing? You're fishing
our fishing guru here on the muster. You were away
for a while and you were some of the photos
you were sending during a said meeting, if you talk
about that, are went pretty good?

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah? No, absolutely no. We had a pretty good seven
eight days in Dennisoud Islands, so where there is mostly
pretty good. So yeah, no, I think there was just
one day I was a bit rough of that Friday,
the Friday Friday the sixth must have been was pretty
average down there, but still mention get that for a
dive anyhow, So no, earing was pretty good down there.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
As far as the oysters, how are they looking?

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Actually feel they were slightly better than our last year,
to be fare, so we were certainly we were diving
for them and that they they were certainly a lot
more painiful than what they were have been the last
couple of years. So fingers crossed. The stocks might be
se ok this year.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So when you're down there, you're just living on the
food groups. Cray first power in blue cord more release.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah. So yeah, so yeah, always they had a few
scot Upsot season still open. It might be closed now actually,
but the still still opened last week and I think
it's about the tenth ho. So you know, we had
the oysters and scallops, blue cord, crayfish.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Power, and yeah, yeah, we get the guests of it.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Well, even meant to get some mutton birds as well
last last season's one, of course. But yeah, no, So
we were living off the ocean pretty pretty well. Really
was it.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Busy on five straight.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Yeast And we we didn't venture too far out into
the Strait from from Street Islands because no need to.
When we were going across, we didn't see anything on
the On the twenty eighth we went across, didn't seem
not many boats out. Then when we come home you
saw a couple in the distance, but there was quite
a few trailers in the car park, So I guess
they're out on straight somewhere. But I suppose it's the

(06:46):
Furrow Strait is such a big area that when you're
on the water, it's very hard to see anybody. So
it's you know, you might see our boat there or
here there, whatever, but it's yeah, there must be a
lot out there somewhere, but you never see.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Them as far as there and Stewart Island. Bruce Ford
was saying recently that the due to be recealed was
any of that occurring while you were over there? Just
as a side note, Well, the idea.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
I think I did see Folkhagen or whoever someone drive
around I think doing some potholes and a few repairs.
So from from last year to this year there had
been some roading, reservicing as well done as well. So
I just can't quite recall. We didn't adventure into town
too often to be fare so well.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
You don't need to use self sufficient, living off the land,
living off.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
The ocean, that's right, you know. So we may have
we may have visited the office over there once or twice,
but apart from that, it's yeah, it's hardy ventured in
town at all.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Good on you are. We'll let you carry on, always
appreciate your time.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yeah, good has got Andy.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
Larren Ross living like a king literally off the land
there off and frovo straight. I mean, it's one of
the perks of being done here right, living close to
such a fantastic resource. That next week going to catch
up with Fiona Young out of beef and leave New Zealand.
