Speaker 1 (00:00):
The views expressed in the following program are those of
the participants and do not necessarily reflect the views of
SAGA nine sixty AM or its management.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I'm Nora Murray and you're listening to news Talk Saga
nine's sixty. Great to have you long today. I hope
you're enjoying your day and getting closer to the weekend here.
I love November. It's a great month. Of course, we've
got Remembrance Day on the horizon, at which my grandmother
always used to say, and I've never forgotten about this.
She just didn't feel right putting up Christmas decorations until

(00:52):
after Remembrance Day.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
And that sort of stayed with me.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
But the month of November is a beautiful one and
the leaves are gorgeous and they're starting to.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Fall all over the place though.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
But one thing you can count on every month, no
matter what, is having our friends Stephen Dasco joining us
on the program. He is the Ward one councilor in
Mississauga and has been for a number of years and
he joins us every month to chat about what's happening
in his part of the city and in council in general.
I think we touch upon some stuff, so it's good
to have him along as always. Stephen Dasco, how are

(01:21):
you sir today?

Speaker 1 (01:23):
Norm is great to hear your voice. It's what an
interesting time we're at right now, just in the world,
but also you know, it throws us a lot of
curve balls on a daily basis what goes on across
the globe which we can't control. But you know what
we have going on at the City of Mississauga. And

(01:45):
I really look at, you know, my shining spot, which
is a ward one, and there's always something going on
and it's just a very very active place.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well, I know that the whole year is busy, but
is there such a time is downtime or a slow month?

Speaker 3 (02:02):
How's November? Generally?

Speaker 1 (02:05):
November is Actually that is another time here that is
also quite active. Because oil boy, we've got, as you
were mentioning, it's Remembrance Day coming up. So right now
we're getting ready for remembrance date. There's two incredible, really

(02:26):
nice ways to be able to celebrate our vets and
give our respect to them for everything that they've done
and continue to do for us in a in a
bunch of different ways. And this coming Sunday, for example
at the Army Navy Air Force Club and that's on

(02:47):
Third Street. And this is one where they are going
to have people gathering for a parade at ten thirty
that goes around the built around the block. Then at
eleven the moment of silence and then there's the laying
of the wreaths. And that is one that if if

(03:09):
those in the community that are tuning in have not
had an opportunity to participate in again, it's a very
moving parade and ceremony to be a part of it.
It's open to the whole community. And afterwards, the lady
that operates the place is she's a gem unto herself.

(03:32):
Her name is Lunn and she homemake homemade shepherd's pie
for everybody. And so that's a really nice way to
do it for Armistice Date. And that's on the Sunday,
and then on Remembrance Day on the Tuesday, the Port
Credit Centotaph, through the through the Legion and you know others.

(03:57):
We're all, but it's predominantly the lead where everybody gathers
in Court Credit does the parade that includes going along
Lake Shore, then Upstate Bank. There is a church service
and then of course there's the moment of silence and
the laying of the reefs and in that whole ceremony

(04:18):
as well as more than open to the public, and
then there's light refreshing refreshments back over at the Legion
on Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Afterwards, we're speaking with Stephen Dasco. He is the Ward
one counselor in Mississauga and you can go to Stephendasco
dot com or Stephen Dasco dot ca for all the
lineup of great information and events and such and just
get heads up on some of the rules in the
in the city. Sometimes from his website.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
It's really well put together.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Also follow him on social media at Dasco Ward one
and you'll find him on usual suspected places like Facebook
and Instagram and such. I'd go to Stephen Dasco dot
com for this for all the great information that you.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Need to know.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
And there's a ton of stuff always being uploaded on
your website, which is a great It's very easy for
me then to find material quite frankly, Stephen, because your
website updates me constantly.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
It's great.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
We try to keep everybody in the loop on what's
going on because there is a lot, and we also
have an e newsletter that goes out each and every
month and it's one We even have a table of content.
It can be quite lengthy, but there's a lot of
things going on in not just the word but throughout
the city. But we try to keep everybody in the

(05:35):
loop on what's going on in terms of what's happening
in the ward for different events, but also things that
are coming up. For example, we've got a windrow clearing,
which is the first time in the city's history that
it is going to be clearing everybody's windrow. That's that
clump of snow or it's almost like concrete at the
bottom of your driveway when the plows go by in

(05:56):
the winter time. So my email newsletter will give you
an update on that for example, and I'll and leaf
pick up and different things like that. So you just
have to go to my website for anybody listening at
Stephen Dasco dot ca that's Stephen Dasco dot CAA and
you can sign up. It's free to sign up and

(06:19):
you'll be able to get that each and every month.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
So what else has been going on here? You got
through Halloween? Okay, did you dress up.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
This year. I will tell you I did not dress up.
I usually do because Miss Maria it is her favorite
time of year. She loves, she loves Falloween. But this
year we did not get to two decked out. I
must say. The Port Credit BIA did host a movie
night and it was it was an outdoor movie night experience,

(06:51):
which was very cool. And so she collaborated with the
BIA and she was the bride of Frankenstein and so
she got to dress up. But I did not. I
was just a chaperone.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You were supposed to be Frankenstein, I believe. But anyway, awesome.
So it looks like you had a good time anyways
out and about it Halloween and such and anything else
you want to talk about. Talk about this has been
going on. I know you mentioned leaf removal. Some people
are saying to me, it seems kind.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Of early for leaf removal.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
The leaves are coming down, but they haven't come down
yet in droves, and we need a good storm.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
I guess Steven to bring.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
This, yeah, and I think we're getting it kind of
this week in a few different ways. But this year
down in Ward One, we're doing leaf pick up. In
terms of the vacuum leafs collection where we're doing it
a little bit later this year, and that is that
is a little it's deliberate because we have usually that

(07:49):
issue as you're saying, where the leaves don't fall quick enough,
et cetera. They are also those those pesky oak trees
tend to hang on to their leaves, and so we've
got a lot of mature trees throughout the ward and
so this is one where we are going to be
getting the collection done just a little bit later. So

(08:10):
for Ward one most residents, we'll be getting it next
week and that will be the first pass. There's there's
two passes that they do, so the first one is
going to be coming the week of November the tenth.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
You got any good news for anybody with regards to
the construction and such going on, And you're part of
the of the city. And I'm only mentioned this because
I love coming to Ward one all along there of
course wherever you are and import credit and such. But
it's a devil of a time sometimes getting in and
out of those areas and regions because of ongoing construction issues.
I'm not blaming you, Steve, and I'm just wondering what

(08:45):
your thoughts are and if there's an update on any
of that.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Well, it's interesting because we have just so many different
aspects of the of the community going on down in
Ward One. We have, for example, we'll talk a little
bit about some of the holiday season, the Christmas season

(09:08):
that's coming up, in some different activities that are happening.
But at the same time, back to what you were saying,
we happen to be also the workhorse of not just
Ward one, but the entire region, which also includes York
Region and parts of a Tobacco and that's with regards
to our wastewater and in our podible drinking water systems

(09:32):
as well. We have the ge Booth Wastewater Treatment Plant.
We also have the Arthur P. Kennedy Water Treatment Plant,
and both of those. For any sort of mandate that
we have by the province or any other government body
that says we want more intensification, well there's two parts

(09:55):
to that. One is making sure that you've got pipes
that are in a state of good repair. The second
is to make sure that they are of the right
size and capacity to be able to handle any sort
of other kind of density. And so that comes back
to what you were mentioning in terms of construction. So
that means that we are quite frankly not always in

(10:16):
a state of construction, but there's a lot of different
projects going on because we are literally the bottom of
the line, you know, the end of the line, and
that's where everything comes too. So if somebody is going
to be building, for example, in downtown Brampton, well guess
where some of those services are coming down to, you know,

(10:36):
and we have to make sure that we're ready for
all of that. And part of that, for example, is
going to be a brand new gravity fed sewer trunk line,
which is a four year project that the region has.
They're going to be drilling way way underneath Lakeshore Road

(10:56):
from Elmwood all the way out to Jack Darling Park,
and that project is going to be it's a it's
a huge one that's going on. It's it's really quite
something in terms of a mining operation. But I wanted
to make sure that when it was being done and
work with our regional staff on this to have as

(11:17):
little disruption to Lakeshore as humanly possible, just because to
your point, it's a busy spot as it is, you know,
and then without factoring anything else like that on. But
there are some projects that are going on. Those ones
can be a little bit challenging at times. And then
but the other one that I'm very much excited about
is we broke ground on just about a month and

(11:40):
a half ago, and that one is the brand new
Port Credit Pedestrian Cycling Bridge, the Active Transportation Bridge as
they call it. That's going over the Credit River right
up by the Legion by the train Track trustle into
Memorial Park. And that is one that is underway now

(12:00):
for the beginning stages of that and that will be complete.
The forecast is for around this time next year.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Oh, that is exciting. That's great.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
I'm sure there'll be some active, very busy events leading
up to it as well. Yeah, there's always something happening
going on down there, not to mention the Hazel mckally
and LRT that seems to just be going on forever.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
That seems to be going on and on, doesn't it.
You know, it's one and I feel for everybody I
happen to live, you know, in the community that abuts
that construction as well, And you know, truly it's one
that is it's disruptive, it's caused us some challenges. It'll

(12:43):
be nice to have it done. But in terms of
that project, yes, that's unfortunately out of the city's hands.
But you know, it's one that it's fully underway, so
hopefully the sooner the better for them to be able
to get that complete, you.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Know, Steve.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
But I don't think everybody realized is that it is
out of the city's hands because it's so easy for
us to immediately default to, oh, okay, the city is
way behind on this, but really it is out of
your hands.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Isn't it It is. This is a project that the
province under Metrolinks is responsible for and they're the ones
that are building it. They commissioned it, they put it
out to a group not a very creative name. Metrolinks
has a group called Mobile Links that's actually building it.
And it is very much out of the city's hands.

(13:31):
They liaise with the city, what they really hold all
the cards and they're the ones that are that are
actually driving that process.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
Moving on to other things though, going on. I was
reading an article at Mississauga dot com yesterday and it
had to do with Council today our apart me yesterday
I should say, on the fifth November fifth yesterday, considering
a motion to name a trail after Harun Khan for
his longtime ball tierism and humanitarian work, did you know

(14:02):
Harun connor what did you.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Know of him?

Speaker 1 (14:05):
And yes, I know Harun quite well. He's Uh, he's
a man that has given a lot to the city
of Mississauga, but he also has done a lot in
his native Pakistan. What he's done is he operates a school,
and he has truly changed hundreds of people's lives and

(14:27):
and he's operated and done a lot of volunteer and
charitable initiatives here also working with closely with our police
services as well. And Uh, and Harun is he's he's
a man that you know, he's been, he's been, you know,

(14:47):
walking the walk, not just the talk for for a
number of years. And counselor, but who it's his ward
that that mister Kahn lives in brought this forward and
wrecked regnized him and it was I think quite fitting
and so I was happy to support that on behalf
of a mister Khan to have a part of the

(15:09):
trail that's named after him.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
So passed through then it went through.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
It did go through, and so that will connect right
into the David Cullum Trail.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Yeah, awesome, I was just reading about this gentleman. As
a resident, he's been an active part of Mississauga's South
Asian community and has supported local organizations such as Peel
Multicultural Council, South Asian Family Support Services is at Memon
Association of Canada and I want e now, I hope
I pronounced that correctly. The motion also mentioned he's also

(15:40):
organized South Asian Canada Day celebrations and local recruitment sessions
for police, as you pointed out, fire and military services.
And it goes on and on here. So the city's
going to be installing signage naming the currently unnamed trail
as Harun Khan Trail at the park. And that's a

(16:01):
sixteen twenty Sermontes Drive. So very nice gesture on Counsel's part,
I think, yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
And that was an initiative that Counselor but undertook, and
that was just that I was more more than happy
to support Counselor butt in recognizing her room con.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Very very classy on everybody's part there. Well, I know
we've got the holidays approaching here. What are we we're
inside the first week in November. Before you know, it'll
be December and such. And I know that Ward One
as always has a huge lineup of activities planned. Do
you want to talk about any of them now?

Speaker 1 (16:37):
Oh? Absolutely, So this goes right back into the beginning
theme that we had for tonight's for today's call, and
so our call was about what's going on in November?
Are there any times that there's nothing going on? And
I will tell you so, November being a very robust time,
it truly is. We finished off the end of October

(16:58):
with the Ward One ex Lunce Awards and that was
one where we had a full house recognizing volunteers, our businesses,
and of course we did it a little bit different
this year. I did it with a bit of a
variety show type of feel to it, so we had

(17:19):
some performances singing and singing and also poetry as well.
So we had a few different things going on there
that rounded us out for the end of October. And
now what we do have on the twenty first and
twenty second is our I think it's going to be

(17:41):
quite something to see. It's a European inspired outdoor Christmas
market for the holidays, and it's one where we're going
to have lots of lighting. There's going to be a
fifteen foot high Christmas tree out in the middle that's
all went up. We're going to have Christmas trees for

(18:01):
sale to the public, with some of the proceeds going
to a really wonderful group called the Army Navy Air
Force Club. That's where we're actually hosting the event on
Third Street, and so that is going to take place.
We're also going to have just an incredible array and
display of ice sculptures, and that's both the twenty first

(18:24):
twenty second. On the twenty second, there's even going to
be entice carving demonstration and activities for the kids. There'll
be a ring toss for them, for example, and then
we've got performances that are going to be happening throughout
and some of it is going to show some different
countries in terms of how their countries celebrate and recognize Christmas,

(18:49):
so you'll get to see that as well, and then
as well, you'll be able to buy all kinds of
different things there from artisans and kind of one of
the kind makers of different things we're going to have.
We've got a lot of people that have come into
to sponsor and support, so some free food giveaways and

(19:10):
beverage giveaways. And then we also have an outdoor Winter
Wonderland Cocktail and Beer garden that is set up there
and that is going to have some signature cocktails that
are going to be both alcoholic and non alcoholic available,

(19:35):
and of course it is going to be hosted by
an incredible guy who is who's a celebrity on TV
and radio and perhaps you might know who I'm talking about.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
You are too kind. I really am looking forward to
m seeing. I'm not hosting anything. This is your gig
for sure. I'm happy to tag along and introduce some
people maybe and talk up some stuff. But this is
all about Ward One, Stephen Dasco and the community. Really
that's who's hosting all of this. But thank you for that.
I mean, I'm looking at the lineup of what's happening

(20:12):
Friday and Saturday from six until ten pm on Friday,
live entertainment by Carla Gonzalez, Latin Train and up to
thirty vendors or more jewelry, gifts, food items, decorations like
you were talking about it much more too. Some things
that you'll see on Steven's website if you want to
go to stephendasco dot com and have a look at

(20:33):
the whole lineup. And then Saturday is unbelievable with the
beer garden and barbecue and food trucks are going to
be there and up to thirty vendors once again and
live entertainment, and then the ice sculptures which are always
to me on inspiring. I just cannot believe people can
do this stuff. Unbelievable art and paintings and kids games,

(20:54):
it's photo booths, oh my goodness, carving demonstration, all sorts
of things happening. It's Friday and Saturday. Now, Stephen, this
is happening at the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Club.

Speaker 1 (21:04):
Right it is, it is, and that is And people
will say where exactly is that? Well, where it is?
It is literally just off of Kawthra Road, north of
it's just north of Lake Shore. People will know the
area quite frankly because there's a fire hall right on
the corner there. There's a set of lights you just

(21:27):
turn down. You can't miss it. There's two large artillery
guns out front, and the light display alone will be
able to capture your attention immediately, and that's where a
lot of this is going to be going on, and
it did truly. We've got it set up so that
there's a dynamic evening performance and experience that you'll have.

(21:49):
And then the other is the daytime experience and performance.
Proceeds are going towards helping out our Army Navy Air
Force Club. And also we're doing a food drive for
the Compass Food Bank there as well, and so that's
where you know proceeds will be going. So if you
buy a live Christmas tree, for example, fresh cut Christmas tree,

(22:12):
are those proceeds go right to the Army Navy Air
Force Club. Feel free to bring in you know, your
non perishable food and that will go right over to
the to the Compass. And so that's some of the
experience to go on. And none of this would be
possible without an incredible team of volunteers, and I will

(22:34):
tell you we have. We've had a wonderful chair that's
been working on this. Her name is val Hail, and
we've got just a really wonderful group working on It's
she's got her her husband pulled in on this as well,
so he's been actively working away. We've got another lovely

(22:56):
lady named named Karen Priest working on it. It's it's
just been quite nice to see everybody. I can keep
naming people in terms of uh, you know the group
that we do have, Margaret, Uh, there's a scouting group
as well that we have that's helping us out. And

(23:17):
then of course miss Maria she got she got sucked
in as well and she's been working a way to
to make it special for everybody as well. So it's
been a great family affair as well because my my
brother is also working away at it and uh and
we've got some friends as well that are all bonding
together to to try to give everybody in the community

(23:40):
h and and and beyond. This is available for everywhere.
If you happen to live in Oshawa, Toronto, Oakville, Burlington,
you name it, windsor come on down. Everybody is more
than welcome to participate and to be a part of
getting into the holiday season and also celebrating with us

(24:00):
and having some new memories for your families and so
come on down and be a part of all that.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
Yeah, it's the Mississauga Ward One Outdoor Christmas Market. Remember
this is Friday, November twenty first, Saturday November twenty second,
the twenty first and twenty second of November at the Army, Navy,
Air Force Veterans Club that's at seven six' five Third,
street As stephen was, describing for, you just Off Cawthra,

(24:27):
road seven six' Five. Third street Go to stephen's website
for all the information you need, and yes as it,
says there let's help build a mountain of food For
The Compass. Food bank goodness knows they are in dire
need as always, for sure so we. Support that. THAT'S
great i, Can't.

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Wait Steve.

Speaker 1 (24:50):
And i'll tell. You norm the other thing that we're
doing is we're finishing it off at four pm On,
the saturday and it's done. Very deliberately it's four because
it gives everybody an opportunity to get Up To city
center before six o'clock because they're going to have the
First Annual Santa claus parade that is going to be

(25:13):
back up Up At. Celebration square it's an evening parade
which also is set off with the lighting Of the christmas.
Tree there so that's a full action pack weekend for the,
twenty first, TWENTY second i.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
Know you didn't.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
Know this i've never mentioned it to, you before but
my daughter now works For the City Of mississauga steven
and she will be involved in the lighting of. That
event this is her.

Speaker 3 (25:40):
Filling.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
Lighting yep she is now working For the City, of
mississauga so she does lighting. For performances annie is going,
to be, for example one of the big stage shows
coming to The Meadow vale theater. Next year i'm going
to go see a show based on the Life Of.
Carol king It's, CALLED beautiful i believe. It is that's
coming up. Later tonight i'm going to be going. There

(26:02):
anyway my point is that we're looking forward to. THAT
event i won't be able, to ATTEND but i know my,
daughter WILL and i know there will be hundreds and
hundreds of. People there it's going to be a. Great
time so that whole weekend is. Jam packed good. For
you what a. Great time that's going. To be anything
else you wanted to cover for, The holidays i'm sure
there's lots of, other things.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
So, much sure and, Why not we'll keep on With
a november theme while we're. At it so then The
next saturday, after that if you Can imagine we've got
another big event and that is the lighting Of The
christmas tree and the Lighthouse In. Port credits so there's
going to be a whole incredible display of things for people.

(26:43):
To Do The PORT credit bia is working tirelessly to
give a great experience. For that we're going to be
back again with the twenty Five foot christmas tree right
in the middle of the, skating oval and that is
going to be right Down In Pork Credits. Memorial park
lots of things, going on very family friendly, of course

(27:04):
and so everybody. Is welcome AND as, i say whether
you live anywhere that you're Tuning into saga, nine sixty
everybody is more than welcome to come and be a part.
Of it.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
SOUNDS fantastic i can't wait for.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
All, this yeah, you know it's that time.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Of year, you know spirits are a little higher because we're.
Looking forward we've got so much optimism with all the
great events and the lights and the tradition and the
family get togethers, and such and like, you said everybody,
is welcome so that is super. Good stuff any other
droppings you want to put into the? Show here what

(27:43):
do you think ANY grand.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
I thought you WOULD and i thought YOU'D never. I, had,
Yeah yeah and there was a recent event, that happened
and this is one that came before the mayor, presented
council and this was the province was going to recognize
one senior for in terms of what they've done for,

(28:07):
the community in terms of being, involved. Volunteerism etc and, we,
thought well this is a real hard one. To do
so what we all collectively decided and went forward was
there would be a senior from, each ward which is
also very difficult, to do but it was a senior

(28:29):
from each ward and the mayor got to recognize one
as well in terms of all of the work that.
They've done and then what she did was she presented
each one of them with the key to. The city
it was the mayor and the respective counselor both got
to present a senior with the key to. The city
And for, ward one it was a wonderful Lady Named.

(28:52):
Judy tuddy she has been involved in the community for
DECADES and i, mean decades and she there's nothing that she, Hasn't,
said okay sign me Up and i'll. Do it and we.
Recognized her so she has a key to the city
and it was quite nice to see her family come
and join in for. The celebration AND then i guess

(29:17):
a FEW others i must have. To say as we're
getting into kind of the holiday And the christmas season,
of things what we're getting towards the end of this
month is free parking which is coming back until the Fifteenth,
of january so YOU'LL find i believe it's the, last

The Male Room with Dr. Jesse Mills

As Director of The Men’s Clinic at UCLA, Dr. Jesse Mills has spent his career helping men understand their bodies, their hormones, and their health. Now he’s bringing that expertise to The Male Room — a podcast where data-driven medicine meets common sense. Each episode separates fact from hype, science from snake oil, and gives men the tools to live longer, stronger, and happier lives. With candor, humor, and real-world experience from the exam room and the operating room, Dr. Mills breaks down the latest health headlines, dissects trends, and explains what actually works — and what doesn’t.
