Hello's on the Cardinals fans, and welcome to the latest
edition of the Rise Ups Here podcast. Best are Cardinals
Talk of the webmon' your host Jessroot from Cardswire dot
com USA Today's NFL wire site. Uh Episode six and
fifty three recording with my co host Seth Cox from
Revenge of the Birds dot com sp Nations zeros on
a Cardinals site as we do yet another draft preview show,
(00:53):
this time just about the wide receivers, a position that
has taken a back seat this offseason as they've been
focusing on front seven players. But it's still actually is
a position of relative need, wouldn't you say, Seth?
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yeah, And it's just you know, they need another type
of wide receiver. I know there's a contingent of fans
that really love Greg Dorch and we love the story
of Greg Dortch, and we love Greg Dorsch. Is you
know a potential wide receiver four type, but you know,
in his first full season getting an opportunity to be
(01:32):
the wide receiver three. It was after the first game
where he, you know, had a really nice game, it
became obvious that it's just not something he can do
full time. You know, guys his size and I have
a freshman heading into his sophomore year of high school
(01:52):
that's about an inch and a half collar and about
only about fifteen pounds later than Greg, and you know
those guys, and you talked about this on Twitter one
day or x whatever you guys call it nowadays, I
don't know whatever you youth call it. You know, with
regards to Greg is, you know, he's a great effort guy.
(02:16):
But when you're small and you don't have elite traits
or something elite in your bag in terms of athleticism,
you it's it's really hard to be a guy to
count on it. And you know, again, played in all
seventeen games and had career high in touchdowns, didn't have
(02:38):
career high yeah, career high in touchdowns, didn't have career
high in UH in receptions, in yards or in yards
per reception. So you know, it just became a situation
where it's not a it's not a knock on doors.
It just didn't work out.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
And his role diminished over the course of the year
because he was clear slot guy. When they traded away
Rondo Moore, that was the plan. He was going to
take over in the slot. And as the season progressed,
after Zay Jones got back, they started using Marvin Moore
in the slot, and then towards the end of the
(03:18):
year it was a lot of Michael Wilson in the slot,
which was something new as they were getting, Uh, Zay
Jones some some playing time there now.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Well and Marvin Harris and yeah, go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
I was gonna say to that point, Jess, Uh, the
first six games, he was averaging right around sixty percent
of the snaps. After game six, so games was game
seven when z came.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Back, and what I think it was because he was
out for five. I think he was inactive for one
and then then he played the rest of the year.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
And so he didn't have a game until the very
last one over forty percent of snaps. So like to
your point, this they basic you know, funneled him out
of the offensive sets and so we'll see, we'll see
how it works out. But yeah, I mean, I like
you said, you've got You've got Marvin Harrison Junior. Who
(04:11):
have Michael Wilson. The bugaboo on Wilson's always just been canny,
stay consistently healthy.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Well and in two seasons, see he hasn't cracked six somethings.
Like he is a guy that the coaches love he
is mentality wise, he's a great complimentary receiver, but he
like won the help to the consistency. He does things
that you like because he can do He is a
high for guy in the run game. But you could
(04:39):
definitely upgrade from him. And you've got Zay Jones who's
coming back from an eight catch season, and the rest
of the.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Guys on the roster are unproven.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
And I sure they got a guy Qus Watkins who's
got speed. You've got Tejon Palmer that they drafted last year.
You've got Xavier Weaver who got some playing time last year.
You're a little bit of promise there, But that room
is definitely not one where you're like, oh, it's not
like the running back position. It's not like see, it's
(05:11):
not like it's not like tight end, it's not like safety.
Those three positions, or a quarterback. Even where you look
at the roster and goal, they're not going to draft
one of those before day three. Probably, Like you could
always draft a running back, you could always draft a receiver.
I mean, you could always draft a safe, you could
always draft a tight end. But at least at those
three positions, you feel like the unless someone spectacular falls
(05:37):
where you're like, they're not, they're not picking one of
those guys before day three. Receiver, you can't see that now.
Mail Kuiper his his mock draft that came out on
Tuesday had the Cardinals taking Matthew Golden in the first round.
It doesn't feel like they're going to go that direction.
(05:59):
But I will say this, it wouldn't surprise, it wouldn't
shock me. They are doing visit after visit with you know,
edge guys, an interior linemen, a defensive linemen. I think
offensive I personally think offensive line is gonna be kind
of the focus. But like I wrote about this the
(06:19):
other day, if they're looking for if you want your
first round picks to play right, there are three positions
where the Cardinals could get significant contributions from a first
round pick. Those three positions are on the offensive line
where you play guard or tackle. It would be a
wide receiver and would be inside linebacker. Like they could
(06:39):
draft an edge, they could draft they could draft a
defensive lineman. But they're honestly, they're seven deep. They have
a solid seven seven man rotation right now. On the
defensive line, they've got a solid four edge guys. Assuming
b jail Juli's do they any guy, If you draft
an edge, you draft a defensive lineman for in the
first round, they're gonna.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
Play a small role this year. A receiver could play
a lot.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Yeah, and I thought it was an interesting draft. I
do think the idea of going talking about the Kuyper
draft real quick, going wide receiver guard in the first
two rounds. While like you said, both could be impact,
immediate starter types, it would be slightly counterintuitive to what
they've done this offseason where they've really tried to beef
(07:28):
up the defense especially Yeah. You know, and I quite
frankly did not read the entire draft, I'll be honest
with you, so I'm not sure who was available still.
But the other thing I would throw into that mix
would be corner. Right, Like, if you draft a corner early,
(07:49):
they would probably play or have a chance to play
over shaw Mraphy Bunting or Max Melton. But yeah, I
mean for the best part, you have to look at it,
like you said, those are the positions, and those are
the players that we'll have to see, you know, where
they fit and everything. But this, this wide receiver class
(08:12):
is interesting because it's it's like a lot of this
the rest of this draft, it's middle happy, man. I mean,
it is you've got you've got the A and then
you've got a lot of questions and you know the
guy at the top, I mean, are you drafting him
to be a wide receiver or a corner?
Speaker 5 (08:34):
That's the first question of the draft, right.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Hey, Yes, And that's what we're gonna lead with. And
this is this of the show.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Like we've done on the other positions, we've looked like,
we're gonna talk about Day one guys, and basically there's
one guy that the Cardinals aren't gonna have a chance at.
That's Travis Hunter. We're gonna talk about day one guys.
We'll talk about Day two guys to know Den, we'll
talk about Day three guys to know. So we will
start with with Travis Hunter, who's expected now to be
the number two pick in the draft, but was a
(09:03):
great cornerback and a very good receiver at Colorado and
some and what people are saying is that whatever position
he like, he's got Pro Bowl, all Pro seeding like
potential at both positions. It's just a matter of what's
going to be the focus. And while like at Field,
(09:24):
Yates says Gravis Hunter, just the receiver is wide receiver
one in this crop class.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Yeah, and he's a he's a he's a unique talent, man.
I mean you look at what he did last year,
you know, and again this is just on offense. This
isn't even including the insane production on defense. But ninety
six catches, twelve hundred and fifty eight yards and fifteen
(09:55):
touchdowns and then was the best corner in the country.
Like that, He's an absurd, absurd player, like once in
a lifetime, once in a generation type of guy. No,
you just hope he he stays healthy and maybe he
can break the curse of being a Cleveland Brown, right,
(10:17):
Like those are the those are the things that met
with him. And and here's the biggest thing on on Hunter.
Think about this, Jess, this is literally the best high
school football player in the country. Coming out of high school,
he goes to a HBCU to go play with Dion
(10:40):
and Schadura and those guys h and then follows them
to Colorado and everywhere he goes, he meets and probably
exceeds expectations like that's that's like Bryce Harper, Like you
know those generational guys that they get discovered in high
(11:01):
school or when they're young. That was Kyler as well, right,
and so you just like look at it like this
guy is Yeah, I mean, he's he's special. That's there's
really nothing else to say about it, though, because he's
not even I mean, I'm sure he's number one on
their board, but he's.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Not an option.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Well, and the interesting is is, if I guess we're
going to talk about Travis Hunter again when we when
we go over, I guess, yeah, which.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Did we talk corners already? No, that's nothing, that's next.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
I think it's Thursday.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Actually yeah, I think so, Uh, but we'll talk about
Travis Hunter again. It seems like that he's going to
play both sides foot ball, but is viewed as more
of play. And this is honestly I would do this
be defensive back. Full time. We'll find ways to put
(11:59):
you win on offense because you can while while corner well.
Receiver is technically in terms of salary, the more premium
position these days, it's much more difficult to be a
great cover guy. So if you can get greatness out
of him, that changes your defense and you still can
(12:23):
have an impact offensively as opposed to and I think
it's an easier thing to do full time defensive player,
package offensive player as opposed to being a package defensive
player when you're playing on offense.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
I think that's an.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Easier way to do it. That's said, I'm going to
spend a lot of time on Travis Hunter. There's a
group of receivers that they the opinion of them varies
kind of widely. If we're talking about and you tell
me this, there's basically four receivers that I.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Think are probably all expect to go to the first
round after Hunter.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
If you just look up solid recivety, Golden Team, Act, Tetero, McMillan,
uh and make a booka Luther Burden, Is there anyone
else of that of those that's gonna be you're probably
expecting them to go in the first round as well.
As it probably those four plus Hunter.
Speaker 4 (13:18):
No, it's just those four and and you know we'll
get down to the last two guys, but you start
with with Matthew Golden. You know, he was number two
off the board in terms of wide receivers in Hyper's
latest mock.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (13:33):
You know, he's a he's a really interesting guy and
and you know obviously mocked to the Cardinals, and so
that's one of the things that you know, we discussed.
And you know, the Golden thing it if they were
to bring in a receiver, it would be that type, right,
six foot one ninety five and fortune nine forty wins
at all levels of the field. You kind of look
(13:54):
at his his overall routes and where he won, you know,
one hundred and fifty.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Which was everywhere, he won every and just didn't get
a lot of the downfield go. So they had Isaiah Bond,
who was the guy that ran those routes. But remember
coming into the combine, it was Bond who was saying,
I'm gonna be the fast guy, and he wasn't slow
by any means, but it was Golden who was the speechter.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Well, it's funny because you know he had four hundred.
Golden had four hundred and thirty eight yards on deep
perceptions and he averaged thirteen and a half yards per catch.
So like, that's the big thing is like you know,
he he doesn't, like you said, he wasn't running a
ton of the routes, but he when he did, they
(14:43):
were they were completed and completed at a high rate.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
You know.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
That's that's the big thing with Golden. He's versatile. He
can be used in a number of different ways, from
a number of different stations. An he wins. The biggest
question I have and why? And I'm not you know,
negative or positive on on Golden.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
I just don't know.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
I don't know if he fits what they want as
a wide receiver because his biggest weakness, uh is his blocking.
And I know people are gonna be like, well who cares,
But I mean we we saw like the Cardinals block,
ask the receivers to block a lot, you know, so
is you know, while while they want that and that's
(15:34):
the expectation, are they willing to sacrifice that for a guy,
especially in the first round. That's where my question comes
in on that pick. You know, the next guy you mentioned,
uh Ti Taram McMillan, massive right six', five two hundred
and twelve. Pounds you know it didn't he he ran fast.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Enough.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
UH i don't think anybody expected him to be in
the sub four. Fives AND i think he ran whatut
a four or five? Fours what he ended up at
at the at the u of a pro, day uh
six four eight, sorry and he came in at two,
nineteen so a little. Heavier he surprisingly has short arms
(16:21):
for his, height which is, interesting but good wingspan so you,
know makes up for. It there's just very few guys
built like, him. RIGHT i mean we've seen we've seen
The kenny, Galladays we've seen you, know those type of.
Guys and And golladay is a, nice uh you, know
type of mid range.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
Prospect you, know a guy THAT i think he made
A Pro.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Bowl uh six four, eighteen ran a four, five had
good good not great, jumps you, know but you could
you could win because he's a big guy that that
can go up and get the. Ball.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
Uh you.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
Know obviously the high end comp would be like AN
Aj green type. Player but, again are we really gonna
like a Borderline hall Of fame level? Player is that
where we want to put the combat For Drake.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
London Drake london's a bit, thicker but he's the same,
style style of. Player but he's interesting because you, know
you see him mocked in the top ten all the
way into the mid.
Speaker 4 (17:25):
Twenties, Right and the one THAT i WOULD i healthy
obviously being the. Keyword but what About Mike, williams, right
the big receiver that was with The chargers forever.
Speaker 5 (17:39):
That got.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
Him remember he got that massive act and everybody was,
like what are we? Doing and then he just never
lived up to. It but health and so, like obviously
we don't expect that for t mac or hope we
hope that that. Doesn't BUT i mean a guy that
had two one thousand yard, seasons had over ten touchdowns
in a, season over nine touchdowns in a, season like
(18:01):
really really talented type. Guy and he's, probably you, know slightly,
faster BUT i wouldn't say crazy. Faster but he's been
a guy that just goes up and gets the ball
consistently high. Points but he's got great body control and
(18:21):
he's gonna win at.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
The catch point a, lot like a lot. Lot SO
i LIKE i like the.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
PLAYER i, would you, KNOW i wish we saw more
routes from him in terms of what he did at
u Of. A but you, know he, runs he runs
the routes he runs very effectively and very. Well So
i'm not overly concerned about, it but you do wish
(18:50):
you would have seen some more from him in terms
of different. Things you, know he's not a guy that's
gonna be running around a lot of outs and and
things like. That, Right you're you're mostly gonna run him
on and goes and, hitches maybe some crossers here and,
there but you, know and and then some deep ends
because of the, body, right you're gonna be able To
(19:13):
he's gonna be able to size those guys. Up and
then it and then it gets to the question. Marks
and it's not question marks in terms of ability at
least to you AND, i but do they go in
the first. Round so again we're just kind of Using
kuiper's mock as a. Guide but those are the three
wide receivers that going around. One but the next two
guys are really. INTRIGUING A Mecca buka one of the
(19:36):
most you, know decorated collegiate receivers.
Speaker 5 (19:40):
In, history.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
And and So iper had him GOING i think thirty two.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
Yeah and so.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
He's a guy that does a lot of the dirty, work,
Right he's he is in a deep ball guy and
it's not. Shocking the Comp i've seen, again way way
way high. End so let's you, know let's reel it.
In but a high end comp of aman Ross A.
Brown you're, like, OH i can see, that you, know
(20:17):
like a little bigger six just under six to one
over two hundred, pounds ran a four or.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Five you, Know so he's not a.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
Burner by any, means but but, hey like you see
it in, him, Right like you see the way he
plays and how physical he. Is i've Seen Pooka nikua,
Again like those are insanely high end.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
Comps But i'll remind you because Because i'm a rock
s what round was he?
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Was he he was a?
Speaker 5 (20:44):
Two, Yeah, NO i think did he go that? Early
i'm checking right now.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
As, nikoua like you talk About, nakoula he was a
fifth round picking he's a.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Stud but, like there's there's one thing you PROBABLY i don't
think you can go back wrong with Taking Ohio state.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
Receiver, right they're gonna give you eight hundred plus yards the,
Season like they're just gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Is he and he does. Things and there's one thing as.
Well he does things the right. Way he does the little.
Things he's the anti diva type. Receiver he is just
much Like Mark marv is a, grinder he's a, worker
And Abuka buka.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Is also that.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Guy and so you're getting like we.
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Like to, say high floor, guy like he's going to be.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Productive it's just a matter of whether he.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Is a star or. Not, Right Luc burton is super
interesting because.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Perhaps the woolsiest what what is? That Daniel, Jeremiah he's,
like don't don't Overthink Luther. Burton he's Like Deebo samuel
but more. Athletic but the, production the drop off from
twenty twenty three to twenty twenty four is.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Staggery, yeah, yes that's the only way to say.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
IT i mean six foot two of six ran a
four four one and like you, said like the comps are, easy,
right it's it's high. End obviously is going to be
debo and and that's one of those ones where people, go,
oh we can't put debo. RIGHT i, Mean deebo's, unique
(22:33):
but this guy was used similarly At. Missoo like you,
said terrible season this, year but last year is so,
dominant and even his freshman year was so.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Good, yeah yards in twenty twenty three eighty six, catches
fourteen yards of, reception nine. Touchdowns but then last year
playing with was It Brady, cook same, quarterback solid, quarterback
and it drops to sixty one for six seventy six
only eleven yards of, catch six. Touchdowns although When missouri
(23:13):
would come back in those, games you would see like
he'd be the guy to he'd be this come alive
in the fourth quarter when they're trying to come. Back
so was it a concentration?
Speaker 3 (23:23):
Thing was he? Bored but is he going to be
bored at the next? Level is? It was? It Ho?
Chi was?
Speaker 1 (23:32):
It but those are definitely questions you have to answer
about him because how many how many, talent physically, talented
toolsy receivers have we seen.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Who just don't reduce at the? Pros we've seen a
million of.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
Them, Right and that's what that's what the question. Becomes you,
know he's a yack. Guy he's a guy that you
you get the ball in his hands and let him make.
Speaker 5 (23:58):
Plays you look at his route tree and four it's
just it's.
Speaker 4 (24:01):
Disgusting the way they used, him you, know and and
the amount of hitches and outs that he ran that
and then you, KNOW i want him moving forward or
getting the ball in a spot where he can get upfield.
Quickly and SO i don't mind hitches too, much but
(24:23):
OUTS i just feel like are just counterintuitive to what he.
Does so, Well, uh you, know the screen game wasn't
strong this year for, him which is such a big
part of his game because he is that kind of Burly,
Again i'm gonna throw a name out, there don't get
hung up on, it but you know An kwon Bolden
s type, guy, right get the ball in his, hands
he makes people miss and and runs through a lot of.
(24:46):
People he's gonna be the interesting, one you, know Like
buka And burden are they gonna be the interesting ones
because they're the guys that fit in in TODAY'S nfl so.
Easily but it wire teams and why are not TEAMS i?
Guess but like why are draft knicks and why are
(25:07):
are the draft people so low on these guys because
they just seem like easy, evls especially in our first
round when that that lacks that you, know star talent
at premium.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Positions and that that's the one thing about the receiver
the receiving class this, year last, year which was very
top heavy in terms of, production this has depth and
breadth to. It not necessarily the star power in this,
class but you can get guys who can do some
(25:42):
things pretty much lots of different. Rounds which brings us
to Our day two guys coming to next On rise
up C red.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Podcast Bestar Cardinals Talking.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
One let's move on to talk About day two guys
because they're quite a bit of them that's coming to
next On rise up C. Red we're back on The
rise Of year, podcast The Best Our cardinals talk on the.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Web.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
Now WHEN i say day two now are there BECAUSE
i IF i look at some of the names That
i've heard for is that there aren't as many that
are like.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Number forty.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
Seven the name THAT i keep running across here Is
Jalen Noil Jalen nole out Of Iowa. State because of
that blazing speed, four, three, nine, five, ten super. Productive
is it seemed to be that the receivers that are
On day two are.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Probably more Late day two.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
And like late round, two early round three guys before
we hit The day three. Guys because it feels like
there seems to be a gap after that that If
burden And Buket buka end up falling to the second,
round that wouldn't be a. Surprise but what receivers do
(26:58):
you think are number four forty seven worthy for The?
Speaker 5 (27:02):
CARDINALS i don't know if there is one you? Mentioned Jalen.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
Nowell he's an interesting, guy, uh you know out Of Iowa,
state put up good, numbers you, know and then and
then came in and had a great, commine, right came
in at five ten and ninety four, pounds ran mighty.
Speaker 5 (27:26):
Arms, yeah tiny, arms but in small hands.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
He's got a forty one and that he also has
a forty one and a half inch vertical so, uh
that probably makes it for a bit of.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
That but gram forty time strong.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
Too so at five ten one ninety four he put
up twenty three twenty three reps of two twenty five
in the bench.
Speaker 3 (27:45):
Press he's got a great three.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Cone so physically the athletic traits are, there the production is.
There uh does he fit what The cardinals want to?
Do because if we, notice what are The cardinals they've
been like other than the guys they've already had in the.
Building they've been bringing in guys who are six feet and.
Speaker 5 (28:02):
Taller, yeah and and so that'll be interesting to.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Watch you, know you look at, Him, uh you see
a guy that has the speed and and the, talent.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
But you do wonder about how consistent can he?
Speaker 1 (28:22):
Be?
Speaker 4 (28:22):
Right you, know you look at you look at his his.
Routes last year he was number one in the country
and in in deep yards six hundred and. Nine so
he's a deep ball threat, immediately but after those, deeps, right,
so so posts and, goes you know in some corner
(28:45):
routes like where is he used the? Most and he
doesn't seem as elusive as you would want for a
guy his. Size the yak was just four point two
yards per which is is less than ideal for a.
Speaker 5 (29:02):
Speedster so is he just kind of a deep ball?
Speaker 4 (29:05):
Merchant and AND i think early in his career he
might be, uh AND i don't know if you take
that at forty, seven you, know He's we've seen a guy, like,
ironically Another Jalen, naylor that that's had a similar type of.
Career He naylor's not as fast as As noel, was
(29:32):
but when you look at what he's done With. Minnesota you,
know he's averaged he's averaged over fifteen yards perception in his,
career so you know that'll be that'll be what's to
watch with With. Noel the other, guy, though is Another
iowa state, Guy Jayden. Higgins higgins is kind of what you, mentioned,
(29:57):
right six' four to one hundred and, fourteen pounds.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
So bigger not quite.
Speaker 4 (30:05):
As, Fast obviously noel ran the four three, to Nine
but higgins ran a four four seven at, that size
jumped out of. The building and then he's got the, long,
arms right thirty three and eight, inch arms eighty. Inch wingspan,
you know he's a really really, interesting player.
Speaker 5 (30:26):
And he the guy that can go.
Speaker 4 (30:28):
Up and get, the ball, you know similar to To,
t mac just not probably not quite as high end As.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
T mac.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
Same type of, rouse, though right you're gonna want him
on in and, outbreaking, routes uh posting up. ON hitches,
i mean it's it's insane jes, to think but this,
This dude Jayden and higgins had eighty, seven, catches right
twenty seven came, on hitches which is again that's that's absurd, to,
think like but you're talking about a six or four
(31:00):
guy that, they're.
Speaker 5 (31:01):
Like don't beat, me deep don't beat. Me deep and
what do?
Speaker 4 (31:03):
They do they'd hit it up and throw the ball
to them because he's. So big, so yeah that's, you
know that's gonna be a.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Big thing.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
You know he's kind of the those are kind of
the next guys along with with a GUY that I
if i, remember right and you can, CORRECT me i
think he set the single game record for most yards
in a game Out. Of stanford, UH elik, I am
i am an ore he you know HE if i,
(31:35):
remember right he put up like three hundred yards in the.
Game Once just i'm double checking. Right now but this,
guy is, you know he's a good. Size guy obviously
coming out of Out. Of stanford came in just under
six two two o six ran a four four to,
(31:55):
Four though so you look, at him he's had he's
had a good two year.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
Career there two hundred and ninety.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
Four, YARDS yeah i remember That against colorado and and
so like just a, you know a. High producer he's
he camps out to, you know those those Guys That
green bay drafted a couple of, years, Ago Uh, dantavian wicks,
You Know, romeo dobbs those type of players who've had, good,
Careers right and where did did they go in? THE
(32:25):
third i think they both went in the THIRD if i,
remember Right but i'm double checking, Right Now oh dobbs
went in, the Fourth wis let's See Where dantavian wicks
went in? The fifth, SO yeah, i mean so that's
the problem you're, Looking at like in, this class he's
being looked at as a as a potential like late
(32:46):
second early third, round guy, you know just they in.
Other drafts so basically what's happening is those guys that were,
you know fourth rounders are getting moved up into the
third round and so on and. SO on a GUY
that i, Really. LIKE jess i wish he would have ran,
the forty but he did. Everything Else jack beck out
(33:09):
of OUT of tcu had, you know the had a
decent CAREER, at tcu had the had The Good senior,
bowl week and he was the one that lost his
sibling right During The.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Senior, bowl, yeah yeah it was it's his brother who.
It was it was his brother that died In The
new orleans thing, that, Happened.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Right and so you look at This, Year beck so
what's Interesting About beck jess is he WENT to lsu
for those that, Don't know so he STARTED. At lsu
led the twenty TWENTY One lsu tigers in RECEIVING yards
i believe or, or sorry he was led of them,
(33:54):
in receptions was number three on the team and receiving
yards as, a freshman and then just got passed up
in twenty, twenty two Transferred. To texas christian didn't really
do anything and then exploded. This year so like his start,
and finish, you're like is this a a late day
(34:15):
or early? Day two late day one type? Of guy
but those two years, in between, you're like, all right
this guy's terrible never. Mind right so so that's the
hard Thing. About beck you know he's Gonna be you're
gonna get a lot of.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Interesting comps i've heard really good Things about betch and
you know who moves.
Speaker 3 (34:39):
Well enup he's. Really quick, that like.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
He's a guy that if a team picks up in the,
late second, early third they're just gonna be really really
happy for him because what does.
Speaker 3 (34:49):
He do he gets open and he.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
Catches passes he's got really, good hands he's, athletic enough
and he's probably not, gonna be, you know. A star
but wouldn't you think this is Kind Of christian kirkish
in terms of in terms of ability and they're not built,
the same but in terms of the type of player
(35:12):
he can.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
Be Well and i've seen him Comp To, michael wilson so,
you know like, YOU said, I Mean michael wilson kind
of checks all those, boxes, too right, like reliable, uh
not not, a diva, hard worker.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
You know so he's an.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
INTERESTING guy, I like i LIKE betch i, don't know,
YOU know i don't, think again isn't he kind of
isn't he just kind of the, same though right to.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
The same thing That.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
The, cardinals yeah other names THAT that i know kind
of have.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
Come up do you think that There's still day two?
Speaker 1 (35:51):
Guys one these are, Smaller Guys, Pez, Johnson oregon uh
you go With, No, Miami. EXAVIER ristreppo i don't know.
THEY were i know they were Kind of round, three
guys but Not like ristreppo's for it, was terrible And,
(36:16):
tes johnson for as small as, he is he didn't
like he didn't have.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Elite speed and both guys are kind of smaller. Slot
Guys although ristreppo much.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
More physical, he's LIKE as i heard, him described is
like what doorch is only stronger and able to make
Guys miss doors is great with the ball in his hands,
in Space but ristreppo is a. Stronger runner but that
that forty time was at forty three that he ranted his.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Prod, yeesh well and you look, at. IT man i
mean there's a couple. Of things the first thing On.
Tes johnson you know we we've previously TALKED About, jj,
nelson Right and, i've actually.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
Oh, my, Gosh.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
Yeah i've been fortunate enough to meet and get TO know.
Jj personally AND and jj was very light at one
hundred and fifty, six pounds but he ran a four to.
Eight forty he's literally one of the fastest men ever
to run at.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
The combine so like he HAD that. X factor h
was A.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
Fantastic it was an elite returner.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
In college like you SAID, ABOUT tz I mean tesz
is one hundred and fifty four pounds and ran a
four or five, to one which is, really fast but
it's not really fast for one hundred and fifty. FOUR
pounds i will say he did have elite broad and,
three cones so explosive and great change of, direction skills.
Speaker 5 (37:53):
Which.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
ARE good i could see, YOU know i Could see
tes going the Route Of marque's hollywood brown, right like
and what's been the Bugaboo about hollywood just can never
stay healthy because he's just. So small rastrepo' is a
different one man like that IS and I know q
did not, test well but he's also five ten and,
(38:20):
two ten so like he's built more like a, you
know slot kind of big.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Running back type rather than a than a wide.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
Receiver, Type right so he'll be an interesting one to
WATCH because i don't know where you, take that like
for all the positives that that, forty, is like that's
you have to dig into that and see if you
can find something on tape that makes. You go i'm
not worried about about. The consistency i've seen people say
(38:54):
like he could be The Next. STIRLING shepherd i where did?
Speaker 3 (38:56):
It start but is that something with? That speed is
that Worth a day? Two?
Speaker 1 (39:03):
Pick like you better he, Better be you better scout
him as being elite in other ways to put to
use that day too lottery ticket.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
On a guy that had that is.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
An outlier and on, Day two day three should you
be drafting outliers and maybe maybe it, is more but
you draft outliers in day three right. Day two you
want to kind of stay trade true to traits that
you believe.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
In correct the one guy that's been coming the opposite
directions and and is really intriguing to Me.
Speaker 5 (39:39):
Is.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
Kyle williams the hes he's been around. THE block i.
CAN'T remember i know he's he finished Up At. WASHINGTON
state i can't remember where. He started but, you know
he's a he's a GUY. Oh unlv. That's right he's
a guy that got better. Every year so one of
those things that we, talk, about right like how do these?
Guys Progress or williams at the combine came in at five,
(40:04):
to eleven one to ninety ran a four to, four
flat had good, enough jumps, you know better than better,
than average and then and then you look at, everything
else so, you know, production wise five, year players so
he's going to be on the, older side probably closer to.
Twenty four but he he was GOOD at unlv four
(40:27):
hundred and twenty six yards as, a freshman six hundred
yards as, a sophomore five hundred and forty one yards
and only nine games as a as, a junior and
then he, transferred out Went, to wazoo put up eight
hundred and forty three yards and six touchdowns with the
with the, you know expected number one Pick, cam ward
(40:47):
and then in his final season kind of broke out uh,
seventy receptions just under twelve, hundred yards fourteen touchdowns chests
and he was a big play waiting to happen in his.
Final season and that's kind of where you look at him,
at right is like and now you're seeing him projected
in round two by by all the.
Speaker 5 (41:08):
Big guys.
Speaker 3 (41:11):
He is a he's a.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
Vertical rat but what we talked About, with noel that's
what are are looking at kind of, the, Opposite right
he's a guy that he gets the ball and he
makes plays with the ball in, his hands and so
you want to scheme, him open but you'd like to
see a little bit more concentration on those, deep throws
(41:34):
a little bit better work tracking the ball and consistently
catching the ball on those. Deep balls so that's the question.
With HIM but, i mean you look at what he did, last,
year Man and i'm always big on like looking at
who it. Was, Against right so one hundred and forty
two Yards Against, boise state one hundred and eighty one
(41:54):
yards against A Good new mexico team, last year and
then In the bulgar in his, last game he had
ten catchers one hundred and seventy two yards in a Touchdown.
Against syracuse, so like he put up good numbers against,
good teams and that's kind of all you, ask for
right when when these guys are coming from. Small schools
(42:16):
you go back to the year before he put up
one hundred and two Yards. Against oregon is he wasn't
good lad the, Year before so we won't talk about,
that one but, you know and then and Then, against
washington who made, you know the the national championship, that
year he had five catchers for eighty five yards in.
Speaker 5 (42:33):
A touchdown so likes.
Speaker 4 (42:35):
A dude that has consistently put up big numbers and
and played well at two different stops and. Got better
so that's, you know. The question but, you know is
he a guy that you take at forty seven or
do you or is he the guy you take at
at eighty six or whatever the next pick is that
they have if seventy, eight start if, he's, There, right
(42:57):
like so if you get him at, seventy eight you feel.
REALLY good i don't think you feel as good if
you have to take him at.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
Forty Seven so i'm gonna get so we don't have
to talk.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
About him i'd just throw a. Few names if you
Say they're day two or. Day Thief there's? Day two
what do we where?
Speaker 3 (43:11):
Is it is it? Round two?
Speaker 1 (43:12):
Round three let's Start With Utah State. Jalen royals Is
he day Two or? DAY three i think he's a.
Speaker 4 (43:19):
Third, rounder uh just he's going to go in that
group with kind of some of the guys we just.
Talked about the Thing with royals is you know he
six ft two five and then ran that four four
two forty so, good size, good speed and then, you
know put up a bunch of yards.
Speaker 1 (43:39):
This Year, isaiah bond we talked a little bit. About
him he's more round, three probably?
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Isn't, He yeah.
Speaker 4 (43:46):
And and he's gonna be an interesting one to see
because he's not obviously, as extreme but Similar To xavier rostreppo,
of like how are you how are you? GRADING him
i mean he ran a four to, three nine so,
he's fast don't get, me wrong but but.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
He wasn't as fast as he said it is going.
To be, and honestly he was the highly touted one Coming.
To texas he was the one that, they're, Like Yeah
isaiah bond and, he, underwhelmed uh comparatively when It Was
matthew golden that was the was the.
Speaker 4 (44:22):
Receiving star and the one that he conjures up to
me Is Is. John brown and that's not. A Negative
and john went in the, THIRD round, i, believe.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
Right, yeah yeah he did Save ON. Williams.
Speaker 1 (44:35):
Tcu uh he's an interesting one because an offensive courterat
is going to have to know how to use him
because he's he's, a playmaker but probably not polished enough
as early in his career to just be LINEUP at
x and try to run those number one receiver.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
Routes well, AND dude i MEAN just i mean literally
a shade under six Y four so he's huge two
and twenty. Two pounds then he ran four four eight and,
you're like why did this guy not do more?
Speaker 3 (45:04):
In?
Speaker 4 (45:04):
College right like why why was he? Not better but
we've seen those guys come out consistently over the last couple.
Speaker 1 (45:11):
Of years they're gadget players that aren't. Five eight there are,
six four six four, gadget, Players.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
Right and so that's the biggest Thing with savian is
how do you? USE him i mean all that stuff
we just Talked about jess one hundred and fourteen, Deep
yards like you're six' five two hundred and twenty two
pounds and run a sub four five and you can't get.
The ball deep like that's not a positive in, any
(45:42):
any way.
Speaker 1 (45:43):
Shape Or Form not elijah Badger two round Day two.
Speaker 5 (45:47):
OR day Three i think badge ends up going. On
day three.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
He didn't push him to let's push him to That
any other day two guys that that we should know
before we punch on.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
On, TOO today no I Mean.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
Maybe tory horton i've seen him flirt with you know that.
Those comp, PICKS but YEAH i, mean, i think oh
We Didn't.
Speaker 5 (46:12):
Mention trey harris. That's, The One sorry trey harris had.
An ole.
Speaker 4 (46:15):
Miss you know he he's the other guy that's getting
all the kind of, buzz right now just, under six three,
two of five but only ran a four. Or five
four so it'll be interesting to see where he fits
into this class and where, he ends up because, it seems,
like you know and we don't mean this in, a
(46:37):
negative way but we talk about, this every year like
these guys are are, kind Of, jags right like but
you look at, what he did same type Of Route.
Speaker 5 (46:46):
As kyle, williams you Know Was.
Speaker 4 (46:48):
At louisiana tech put up good numbers for two years
there dinern and thirty five yeards and ten touchdowns, this
last year Then Went to ole miss and put up
nine eighty five and eight and then over one. Thousand
and seven so took the step, up in competition did even.
Better talented players talented player on. A good team we'll
see where he fits in in this.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
In this draft having an Exit Of The Rezup Secret
Podcast bestiff cardinals Talk, on the web let's Move on.
To day three Who are some day three guys worth
knowing that's Coming Next? To rise up he read back
on The rise of Seer With Podcast The besciff cardinals Talk.
Of The web the Cardinals have taken They took a
day three receiver Last Year in tejon. Palmer athlete athlete
(47:31):
he was one of The Freaks For bruce feldman day
three guys to, Know, You Mentioned.
Speaker 5 (47:37):
YEAH tory hartman i think is the First Guy.
Speaker 4 (47:39):
Right colorado state everybody remembers His game against colorado and,
that very, memorable you know the first. Time they played,
and You know in dion's, first year there had, a,
terrible year injured, only six.
Speaker 5 (47:57):
Games three hundred and, fifty three.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
Yards one touchdown but, think about this just the two
Years Previous at colorado state eleven hundred and thirty one
yards and eight touchdowns AND then led I believe the
ncaa interceptions ninety six receptions for eleven hundred and thirty
six yards.
Speaker 5 (48:14):
And eight.
Speaker 4 (48:14):
Touchdowns last year everybody thought he was gonna go and
and he came back and it just. Didn't work out but.
HE tested well i mean six two and a half,
one ninety six ran a four to. Four one, forty
you know he he's a guy that that should be
able to come, in and, potentially you know not just,
make a roster. But probably Contribute I've, Seen tyler Johnson
(48:36):
I've seen, josh reynolds comps guys that Got drafted on
day three and had carved out niches as like wide
receiver fours and Had good careerst.
Speaker 1 (48:45):
Fountain, out, of, maryland productive. Productive and fast. He seems
intriguing he's a touch on the lean side of appears
like he was listed at.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
One seventy eight he came out and.
Speaker 4 (49:00):
At the combine and but, Here's the thing so this
is what we always talk about with, those combine inflations
right coming at one eighty three and, you don't test
and then. Everybody has questions but he came in, and
he tested and he blew it out. OF the water i,
mean four three seven forty jumped out of the building
thirty nine and a half inch for one hundred and
thirty inch broad so ninetieth percentile for.
Speaker 5 (49:20):
Both of those and, Like, you said jess he.
Speaker 4 (49:23):
Was ultra productive kind of the Alpha for that maryland team. The, last,
year yeah yeah the, last two years and then this year.
Capped it off the question you have always with guys
like this.
Speaker 5 (49:39):
Is you know who'd you?
Speaker 4 (49:41):
Do IT against and i, will say this and this
is the one kind of pause that. This gives you
you look at his first four, Games, this year jess
and and you genuinely thought this was going to be.
A legendary season seven for one seventy, eight and two
eleven for one hundred and fifty two and one nine
for one seventeen and one and then fourteen for one
(50:03):
hundred and fifty seven and one that's over. Six hundred
yards in his first four games he had, a good.
Speaker 3 (50:09):
Race but one one hundred yard game after that the rest.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
Of the season It was against minnesota once they got.
To conference play he did have five for one forty
in twenty Twenty three against rutgers Shout Out to max
melton there uh and seven for one Thirty four against
indiana in. Twenty twenty, three but yeah like his production
came against the, non conference Guys Except for michigan state
(50:37):
that was a, conference game early but three of his
like three of his massive games were.
Speaker 3 (50:43):
Against, non conference.
Speaker 4 (50:46):
Yeah and and, not Just that but, Connecticut was bad virginia,
was really Bad and then. Villanova was bad so it
was like bad. Non commerce games, but, you know again
came in size speed and has shown flashes of, being
a talent a guy that's really intriguing from a, size
(51:07):
speed perspective and goes back, to you know questions that
we end up having About These Guys isaac tesla Outa,
or sorry arkansas you get those confused. All the time
just under six four two fourteen ran a four four
to three great jumps good twenty, yard short shuttle so
showed good.
Speaker 3 (51:26):
Change.
Speaker 4 (51:27):
Of directions right so but again you COME back and
I know that arkansas had a down year in terms
of they expected more from. Their QUARTERBACK play but i mean,
In his career jess eight hundred and ninety six yards.
And five touchdowns so that's the, question is like is,
(51:49):
are you're taking as you always say, on day three
you're taking a guy that's kind of a, size speed
freak right six four two fourteen.
Speaker 5 (52:00):
Four four? Three white boy.
Speaker 4 (52:04):
And but you look at THESE games just I MEAN
against TEXAS, a and m the one of, the best
teams they played five for one hundred and twenty. In
a touchdown but then he goes up, against you know
he goes up against other teams, and he, goes You
know against texas one for. Seven like that and again
not putting It, All on tesla but if you're that
(52:25):
much of a, size speed freak why can your quarterbacks
not get you the? Ball more consistently like why are
you not able to get? Open more consistently The last
Guy i'll mention and. That's the thing when, you're you
know talking, about wide receivers you can there's going to. Be,
Forty drafted right but the guy THAT led the, NCAA
(52:48):
this year i think In In yards nick nash one hundred, and, four,
receptions jeez right thirteen and eighty two yards, and sixteen
Touchdowns Was. An all american BUT he's, a.
Speaker 1 (53:02):
I.
Speaker 4 (53:02):
Mean he's old he's a six year senior and this
and he had a good second second SENIOR year, or,
i guess yeah this was his, third senior year so his,
second senior year he had a good season forty, eight
for seven twenty. Eight and, eight but yeah, to like
again this one big, year of production you always have
(53:27):
a red. Flag on that but He's an intriguing day three,
type of guy.
Speaker 1 (53:33):
And that adds in a little bit of wild. Card
forber quarterback played a little, quarterback in college so you
can do some. Trickery with him Kimira d K out
of florida, six foot four three four speed draftable or
is that speed gonna?
Speaker 3 (53:51):
Get him drafted.
Speaker 4 (53:52):
YEAH it should i mean he's a guy that these
guys you have to separate from some really bad back play.
Over their career but AGAIN, with with dk, like you
mentioned you. Look at it He was at wisconsin and
started to build up it got to six hundred and
eighty nine yards, and six touchdowns And then got. WISCONSIN
last year i can't remember who, the QUARTERBACK was but
(54:14):
i do remember, he was Awful. Uh, tenor, mordecai yeah
so and then and Then went to florida, and you
know The, young kid lagway he's, gonna be good but
he was a he was a. True Freshman man graham.
Merch was terrible, so you know putting up seven hundred
(54:34):
and eighty three. Yards was good the eight the last
two years is what's been intriguing because you started to
see the speed a little more seventeen point three yards
perception than, eighteen point six so he was more of
A big play merchant. Than anything else you got to
really go back to that twenty, TWENTY two season i
Believe that's with merz as, the, quarterback There, yeah for
(54:58):
wisconsin and kind of go back and judge him based
on that and then kind of combine it a little bit.
WITH this season i know this was his, most productive,
season but again when you're a fifth year senior playing
with an eighteen, year old freshman it's, a very. Difficult
difficult situation most of the time.
Speaker 3 (55:20):
For Those guys jalen Lane Out.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
Of virginia tech not massively productive, as a receiver, very
good testing but also an. Elite punt returner he led
the acc in, punt return yards, had a touchdown and
did it also as his second freshman his his retiro
freshman year when He Was At. Middle tennessee state probably
(55:45):
especially with the returnability five almost, five ten one four to.
Speaker 3 (55:50):
Three of war. Speed super jumps so he's going.
Speaker 1 (55:54):
To be a guy that could be intriguing late in
the draft for his returnability or as upside. AS a
playmaker i kind of like the same thing as they
Got Out.
Speaker 3 (56:03):
Of tajon. Palmer round five would That? Be about phraser
could he go all the way up at? The round four.
Speaker 4 (56:13):
It just depends on if a team thinks highly enough
of his. Wide receiver skills i've seen him keek in like,
the ONE thirties so i think.
Speaker 5 (56:24):
That's round four that.
Speaker 3 (56:26):
Is Round Four that's dan.
Speaker 1 (56:27):
Sports round four but like if YOU Think, about jj
nelson who was a fifth round pick, also, you, know, fast,
fast fast lean but was, an elite returner you. Go
With that jalen lanes built a little bit bigger almost five.
Ten one ninety so he's got that for, the stronger
build same, type of speed but also that he Could
(56:50):
if the cardinals haven't picked a receiver and he's available.
In round five wouldn't be surprised to go that route
any anybody else that we haven't mentioned that We should.
Speaker 4 (57:02):
For, DAY three, NO i mean i think this is,
an interesting class but you know the it's it's, very
middle heavy and that's why we spent so much Time
on the.
Speaker 5 (57:10):
Day two guys.
Speaker 3 (57:13):
I'd be one the guy.
Speaker 1 (57:13):
That Throw that Jimmy horne of colorado would be another
one to consider late, in the draft one of those
you Know he Wasn't He, wasn't travis hunter. And he's
little he is little as he comes in at five
to nine and almost five ten and, one sixty three
(57:36):
but he also does give you some kick return ability
as well to do, it a bunch but does have
that ability as well as He Was at south florida
for a couple Of years than colorado. The last two,
and with that we'll wrap up this Edition of the
Rise of S Here podcast The Best are cardinals Talk
On the web episode Six fifty three next up. On
(57:57):
our list as we continue on this week will. BE
defensive backs i was looking at THE schedule and I
happened TO seth that i did not put. The defensive
backs we'll need to shuffle the schedule. A little bit
we'll talk both. Corner and safety, heavier on corner. Lean
on safety then probably because we're going to do one
on linebackers and tight ends and one, of our quarterbacks
(58:18):
we might just throw one.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
More we'll do we'll do the corners and.
Speaker 1 (58:24):
Safeties and, AND you know i think we'll do It,
this way thursday we'll do linebackers and DB's and then
do QB's running backs.
Speaker 3 (58:33):
And tight ends is our.
Speaker 1 (58:34):
Last positional preview then we'll talk about it late next
week if we're gonna if we're going to seven Round,
