(00:33):
Rise Up Sea Red Podcast. I'myour host Jess Route from cardswire dot com,
the USA Today NFL wire site coveringthe Arizona Cardinals, of course,
and it is a solo show thisweek as the Arizona Cardinals play their preseason
their second preseason game Saturday night, five pm at Arizona at State Farm Stadium,
England, Arizona. They will behosting the defending of champion Kansas City

(00:55):
Chiefs and it is just an exhibitionfishing Boris, but it will provide a
pretty good test of what the Cardinalshave to do. It's is episode four
hundred and a fifty two. Inthis episode, I will talk about kind
of the players I'm watching four anda little bit more. We'll keep this

(01:19):
one pretty short, so the Cardinals. The Cardinals have their their matchup coming
up, and we don't know exactlywe don't know exactly how how much the
starters were, but we we kindof get it a feel of who we
will not see. Okay, lastweek there were five key players who did

(01:41):
not play. I would say theseare the five players we will not see
in the preseason. Left tackle DJHumphries, running back James Conner, receiver
Hollywood Brown, linebacker Kaisier White, and also safety Buddha Baker. I would
be surprised if he was play.Obviously we're playing. We're injured who were
not in the lineup either. KylerMurray is still out, b Joe Julari,

(02:07):
he's back off a pup. JonathanAnnim made it sound like earlier in
the week that he's probably not goingto play this week. There are some
things that he needed to show inpractice before they give him some game reps
there. I think they're kind ofslow rolling him to make sure that he's
healthy for the season. I thinkI think it's one of two things.
Hopefully, hopefully it's it's not thebad one. They haven't seen enough from

(02:31):
him, and they're they're disappointed,and so they're they're trying to slow roll
him to be ready or they expecthim to do good things, and so
they're just protecting him. I hopeit's I hope it's the protection one I
do. Zach Ertz is off ofpup. Don't expect him to play,
don't expect him to play in thepreseason all he was just cleared to practice,

(02:53):
but that doesn't mean he's in gameshape. So they've they've been ramping
him up. Will he There's noway he's playing this week and the honestly
there's there's little chance he plays nextweek as well against the that that's the
preseason finale. The that's where theyoung players and the backups. The guy's
battling for the back end of theroster practice squad spots, so those that's
the game for those players. He'llprobably see some practice reps in the two

(03:16):
joint practices against the Vikings, butthe plan is to have him ready for
the first week, the first gameof the regular season, and and that's
how it should be. He hasplayed in a football that he doesn't need
to acclaim me too much. It'srunning round, it's doing the things that
he needs to do. Don't needto to have him have a setback or

(03:38):
get a different injury before then.Players I do expect to see also Cameron
Thomas as of course that Jonathan Gannonwouldn't talk about what the injury is,
but said he's suffering residual and aresidual effect of the game last week.
He hasn't practiced this week. Iwould expect him to sit out as well.
But we'll see if my j Sandersis back, because the returns will

(04:01):
help that help give playing time therefor those for those outside linebackers, Zaven
Collins, Dennis Gardeck, and myguess is is that most of the starters
will get a little more work thanthey did in the preseason opener. Colt
McCoy played the one series, theother offensive starters played two series, and

(04:28):
then the defense played seven snaps basicdefense, and then they moved to the
backups. I would expect to seeplaying time increase maybe a quarter, I
think probably. I don't know ifthat means McCoy will be out the whole
time. I think we'll probably seeMcCoy for a couple of series and then

(04:53):
get Clayton tune again some work behindthe ones, just to kind of get
let's get some feel for that,so he gets to play with the better
players. And defensively, I'd kindof expect the same thing. They played
two short series last last week, probably upward to a quarter, and then
the rest of the way will kindof go how it went last week.

(05:16):
So, yeah, what's this isgonna be a tough game. Obviously,
Obviously it's gonna be a tough gamefor the Cardinals. The Chiefs are expecting
to play their starters about a half, and so if the Cardinals don't match
that, So say the Cardinals playtheir starters about which would be roughly the
natural progression because they play like twoseries last week, They're not going to

(05:41):
jump all the way to a playinga half. I would expect them to
probably play about a quarter, getsome good work in the joint practices,
and then don't play at all inthe preseason finale. That's how I would
expect that to go. What thatdoes, That gives the Cardinals an extra
challenge with their backups against the startersof the Chiefs minus Patrick Homespecs. My

(06:02):
home is to play very little likeI expect him to play. Maybe gets
in the quarter, but after that, Yeah, it's gonna be the backups
against the chief starters for the restof the first half if they can hang
with them. I'm not again, the preseason results don't matter, like the
result of the game matters minimumly. What matters is to see how players compete.

(06:30):
Obviously, how players compete, andhow they look against players of the
same caliber or or likewise better playersor players they are obviously better then,
which you know, it is ashame that that Marlon mac got hurt because
that's a scenario where you know hewas going to be going against the backups

(06:51):
and the third stringers, and asa former starter, and it's pretty good
NFL back, it would have beenable to showcase him this week. Another
guy we can expect to see isKianta Ingram. When they released Stevie Scott,
the USFL running back, I thinkwhat that was it wasn't necessarily because
they expect James Connor to play.I think it's because they got healthier,

(07:13):
and so I'm hoping that we couldsee Keiante Ingram in the game along with
Corey Clement to kind of start thingsoff and to go from there. But
you know, coming to next onRace up here with podcasts, Best Our
Cardinals, Talk of the Web,I want to talk about the players specifically
that I want to see, uhkind of step, but what players I
want to see moving forward with? What things I want to see coming to

(07:33):
next and Rise Up? He readback on the Rise Ups, he read
podcasts best or Cardinal's talking on theweb. I'm talking about players that we
want to see now. Last week, there were a number of things I
wanted to see, and I gotmost of them. Colt McCoy looked smooth
out there like it was. Theoffense was not overwhelming, but I did
like the fact that they moved thesticks twice. The offense looked pretty traditional.

(07:55):
He looked comfortable. They weren't doingmuch. That was what I wanted
to see. He got out oftheir healthy because I expect him to be
the starter and in sleep, Ithink Colt McCoy in the lineup is the
safest bet to whether the time thatKyler Murray is not on the field.
I know people that I know whatwe know what McCoy is the ceiling,

(08:16):
But and I know that people wantto see Clayton Tune playing. This team
wants to you know, unless Tuneis significantly better than McCoy, you've got
to or even playing at the samelevel, you can't just Stot tune out
there when he's not going to bethe starter moving forwards. That's a different
scenario. That's a different scenario thanwhat you do with the rookie quarterback who

(08:39):
you know he's gonna be a starter, where you take your lumps. There's
no need to take their lumps. They're just trying to survive till Kyler's Bigot's
back. So yeah, I kindof want to see if the same from
Colt. I want to see theoffense. I would love, like,
if I had to pick something,I would love to see the starting offense
score points. And I'd love tostart to see the starting defense stop the

(09:01):
Chiefs once or twice while Mahomes isin the game. If I had to
pick a goal for the starters, one is not don't be down two scores
when the Chiefs starters come out orMahomes comes out, show a level of
competence and competition. I'm not sayingthey need to look good. I just
want them to not look terrible.I'm gonna continue to watch on the offensive

(09:26):
line, yelled Defroholt, because eyesopen, he looked good. I want
to see if that could continue andmaybe Banion left guard Elijah Wilkinson to hope
that he does not have a followup performance. He was less than great
last week against the Broncos. TrayMcBride hopefully gets in the lineup. And

(09:48):
if Trey McBride is in the lineup, he's a player I want to see
show out a little bit because itfrom what we saw last week, it
would appear that even in the passinggame, the running backs and the tight
ends will have the an opportunity toproduce. And if McBride is out there,
he should some promise because the tidinggroup that they threw out there last
week, it was Jeff Swayman anda bunch of guys who haven't really played

(10:11):
in the NFL period that's been. That's kind of how it's been. We
know what Corey clements. I wantif, of course Canta Inger's playing,
I want to see him. Iwant to see what he does. And
on the offensive line, Moving backfarther into the depth chart, watch Josh
Jones. I didn't think Josh Joneshad a particularly great game. He had

(10:33):
the one penalty a couple of times. As Kelvin Beecham played left tackle with
the starters. I was unsure ifthey was kind of showcasing him, or
if it's actually kind of getting himready to give him the reps at left
tackle since it's he's only had thata little bit, or if we're if

(10:54):
we're gonna if I wonder if they'rein the sake of competition that they're gonna
start art Josh Jones at left tackleinstead of bel beach him and kind of
played the opposite role. I'm interestedin seeing if that, if that,
how that happens defensively, Well,it's still on the offensive side of the
ball. Let let's see what wecan get out of if Michael Wilson can

(11:16):
do more than two, you know, short catches. Now, he did
nicely running the route past the stakes, getting the ball caught and picking up
a third down catch for to movethe chains. Be nice to see him
make a player too as well.On the defensive side of the ball.
Isaiah Simmons. I had attention toIsaiah Simmons, especially early in the game.

(11:39):
How does he how does he getused against that defense? Now,
last year Simmons got he was abusedby Travis Kelsey in the season opener against
the Chiefs. In the regular seasonand it kind of spiraled from there.
He he didn't, he wasn't prepared. He's not playing in the slot this
year, and I wonder, withJay and Tomson playing in the slot,

(12:01):
if he will be the one thatis asked to do more against Kelsey.
How he or if they protect ifthey use Simmons on the back end to
sort of protect against that, usingas a you know, safety kind of
the safety valt there at the backof the defense. I want some pass
rush production. Zavin Collins showed somepop in his playing time last week.

(12:24):
I want to see more of that. I don't I don't need to see
anything for Dennis Cardat because I don'tultimately think he's going to be bleeding part
of the playing rotation. But Ido want to see my j Sanders play,
and I wanted to do something.I am going to keep an eye
on the special team reps for VictimAccage, because a guy that probably looks
like he's not quite going to makethe numbers on the roster, he played

(12:48):
heavily on special teams and in thatsuggests he might already have a place on
the roster depending on what coach Rogerssays. And I m the effort there.
The cornerback position is one to watchas well. Keito kark and both
and Christian Matthew Bowd things can oneof them move ahead of the other and

(13:13):
how much will Antonio Hamilton play thatThat Seth and I talked about on the
show the other day about how hisplaying time was kind of odd because he's
listed at first on the depth chart, but he played deep, deep,
deep into the game, which usuallymeans you're on the bubble showcasing and it's
his and his salary is fully guaranteed, which is an interesting, interesting addition

(13:35):
to the puzzle. I kind ofwant to see that, kind of want
to see that there. Who's goingto be the fourth safety? Okay,
we know who the three are,Buddha Baker, Jayleen Thompson, Isaiah Simmons.
Last week was Juju Hughes that camein and then Andre SHASHERI Sasha would
also got playing time. They signedSean Chandler suggesting that somebody got hurt.

(13:58):
I don't know if it's it's oneof the their their guys like Juju Smith,
Juju Hughes, or or if itwas Sashury who special teams Hughes didn't
play much on special teams, whichsuggests I don't. I don't. I
don't know if that means that he'sless likely to make the roster, because
you're gonna watch your fourth safety oryour fourth and fifth cornerback to be pretty

(14:20):
good contributors to special teams. I'mgonna watch the punning battle again. I
know it's boring, but also watchthe holding because on on Prator's missfield goal,
Cooney was the holder. I didn'tcatch on the I didn't was busy
doing stuff for like reporting, andso I didn't see who held for Praytors

(14:41):
make. But I know Hawk hada punt at the beginning of the game
that he wish he had had aback and ended up getting into the end
zone. It should have been itwould have been better to have that go
another way. But yeah, that'skind of how that went. So,
yeah, that's that's kind kind ofthat. There's a lot of there's always

(15:01):
players to watch on both sides ofthe ball, and the preseason is less
about the overall football product and moreabout the individual evaluations. I guess,
I guess, but it like likeJonathan Gannon, like Nick Rawleis, and
like drew Pets, and you wantto see these players compete. We talked
about how important the win was lastweek, not not for the wins and

(15:22):
losses, but to be able tokind of build things early. It kind
of builds a little momentum. Idon't know they're gonna win, but I
will say this. I will saythis as as a guy that also writes
about sports betting. There's only oneway to bet the preseason, in my
opinion, only one. You betthe underdog on the money line. Take

(15:43):
go for the odds, because let'sbe honest, you don't want to bet
a heavy if every one the moneyline to begin was because the Chiefs worter,
they're like three minus three hundred orsomething like that, and this game
haven't checked the most recent nuts, that's not worth plan. And because the
second half of preseason games it's allbackups and guys that are the roster,

(16:07):
these are players who will not bedifference makers in the NFL regular season.
When you look at trends and play, it's like the teams look vastly different
than what they will be in theregular season, and you try to make
educated predictions and projections. So Iignore the spread completely. I personally would

(16:30):
probably avoid the total, but youknow, if I'm betting the preseason,
I'm just picking a few games orall the games and just hitting the money
line underdog, which would be inthis case, the Cardinals. I think
they're at plus they were at plustwo sixty. I think it's plus two
forty. But they were once again. They are once again the heaviest,
the largest underdog of the priest theweek in the preseason, which is which

(16:55):
is interesting considering that they won lastweek, because it's kind of the perception
moving forward. But yeah, there'sthere's not much else to say. So
what are the keys or let's talkabout that next coming up. That was
on the Rise of Sere podcast EpistarCardinals talk on the web. What are
the keys to this game? Youknow, we'll talk keys in the regular
season's kind of seals feel still inpreseason, but that's coming next rise Red

(17:21):
We're back on the Rise of Searedpodcasts Best Our Cardinals talk on the web.
Keys to the game preseason Number one, no major injuries and no nagging
injuries to the starters. That thatgoes without saying, that's that's the preseason.
You want that happening certainly not.But but number two, they played

(17:45):
a pretty game last week, prettyclean game last week. That is,
you know, continue with that.We know that this that the Cardinals overall
are probably short on talent compared tothe rest of the league overall. Lacross
like if you're looking from you know, across the different parts or facets of
the game, offensive and special teams. There their offense offensive talent. Ember

(18:08):
Lea gets back to the line ofbout is is fine, It's fine,
it's a it's average too, slightlyabove average overall the defense's questions. But
clean avoid penalties. They did thatlast week. One pre snap penalty on
offense. We don't we want tosee that and you know, not happen
again because a disciplined, clean game. We'll keep them in the game play

(18:32):
kind of mistake free. I wantto see, you know, they do
more running the ball. It feltlike last week they could have had more
success running the ball if they hadbetter runners running it. Like they felt
like there were some plays there andthey did okay, but it felt like
last week the performance was they gotthe yards that were there only and nothing

(18:56):
more. And and that that obviouslywould change with James Connor in the line
up, I believe, but youknow, do more in the running game.
Get some pass rush. We wantto see that off the edge,
get some hands on some footballs iskind of the case for there. But
that's that's basically kind of is it? So one health, two mistakes,

(19:19):
and then three. I want tosee plays in the run game, I
want to see pass rush and I'dlike to see some I'd like to see
a couple of explosives on of sense, a couple of explosive place to kind
of move forward. And with thatthat that kind of wraps this up.
If it is a short episode. This is the I'm just roote. We'll
