Believing that the universe may contain alien life does not contradict a faith in God, the Vatican's chief astronomer said in an interview published Tuesday. The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, was quoted as saying the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones. "How can we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere?" Funes said. "Just as we consider earthly creatures as 'a brother,' and 'sister,' why should we not talk about an 'extraterrestrial brother'? It would still be part of creation." In the interview by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Funes said that such a notion "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures. Ruling out the existence of aliens would be like "putting limits" on God's creative freedom, he said. The interview, headlined "The extraterrestrial is my brother," covered a variety of topics including the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and science, and the theological implications of the existence of alien life. Funes said science, especially astronomy, does not contradict religion, touching on a theme of Pope Benedict XVI, who has made exploring the relationship between faith and reason a key aspect of his papacy. The Bible "is not a science book," Funes said, adding that he believes the Big Bang theory is the most "reasonable" explanation for the creation of the universe. The theory says the universe began billions of years ago in the explosion of a single, super-dense point that contained all matter. But he said he continues to believe that "God is the creator of the universe and that we are not the result of chance." Funes urged the church and the scientific community to leave behind divisions caused by Galileo's persecution 400 years ago, saying the incident has "caused wounds." In 1633 the astronomer was tried as a heretic and forced to recant his theory that the Earth revolved around the sun. Church teaching at the time placed Earth at the center of the universe. "The church has somehow recognized its mistakes," he said. "Maybe it could have done it better, but now it's time to heal those wounds and this can be done through calm dialogue and collaboration." Pope John Paul declared in 1992 that the ruling against Galileo was an error resulting from "tragic mutual incomprehension." The Vatican Observatory has been at the forefront of efforts to bridge the gap between religion and science. Its scientist-clerics have generated top-notch research and its meteorite collection is considered one of the world's best. The observatory, founded by Pope Leo XIII in 1891, is based in Castel Gandolfo, a lakeside town in the hills outside Rome where the pope has a summer residence. It also conducts research at an observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson.

all or tradition, so everything's possible. It doesn't conflict or.

I think it's great every time that the church brings
up science, especially from a Jesuit who's so well researched
in his efforts. There's also an Academy of Science that
was run by the Pope as then Cardinal Rep Rock

few years ago. So the Academy of Science has been
around one hundred two hundred years, and it's always it's
always worked in conjunction with the Church. You've got to
realize that God has his science and God has his scripture,

the grand scheme of the world, the universe and all
that has been created by God?

Well, first off, I go from the premise of trusting
everything that God has done. He's given all of us life,
he's given us love, he gives us a chance of
eternal life. So I'm going to trust in his plan.
It's real simple. If he wants to have other planets
with other beings similar to us or dissimilar to us,

that's his plan, and I'm going to run with it.

Why do people or well, let me say this, why
was why have so many scientists been negatively approached by
the Church. For example, as I was reading your intro,

we were talking about how Galileo, for four hundred years
was claimed to be a heretic because of him making
a statement that we orbited the sun.

That's right. The Church really dealt him a bad deal
and they made up for it posthumously. But you're right,
he was dealt a bad deal, and the recent scientists
in the last two generations who helped support the splitting
of the atom self empowered and maybe even possibly deified

by themselves by their newfound power over science, so they
would look down upon the Church in response to them
denying the Church themselves.

There are those who believe that the birth of Jesus Christ,
the Star of Bethlehem, the Three Wise more Men or
the magi, the appearance of angels, the Immaculate conception all
point to the possibility that this was in fact an
extra terrestrial event.

What are your comments on that, Daryl, Well, there's nothing
that conflicts with that statement with scripture. As far as
I know, I don't have any problem with that at all.
God can do anything he wants his way. We could
be tied into other races, either directly or indirectly, through
God's plan and not even know it. So it's certainly

What are the what are the mean concerns of the
church as we talk uh the churches. The Catholic Church
certainly has been under public scrutiny with all the all
the abuse lawsuits that are that are pending. When the pope,
when the Pope made his visit to the United States,

it seems that it was more of a fact finding
mission than it was a papal visit.
Speaker 11 (18:38):
Well, the Pope always is on the you know, on
the lookout for research and to see how his his people,
his congregation are okay. But I think your question is
is basically what the Catholic Church is concerned about right now?
And I think Archbishop Foley put it best three or
four years ago when he said that it's about where

we came from, where we're going, and how to get there.

So how do they do this change about? Because they
the Catholic Church, if you'll excuse my bluntness, is in
one heck of a pr mess.

It is, especially in North America for instance. By comparison
in Africa, it's growing by leaps and bounds, but in
North America it's still taking a long deserved reputation on
the chin. And they've cleaned house as much as they could,
and they're moving forward as best they can. They're trying

to get everybody on the same page as the Vatican
seeking world peace and love.

Do you think that can happen?

Oh, I think it's going to happen. Rob twenty twelve

What is the significance of two twenty twelve as far
as the Catholic Church is concerned. You know, I've i
for the life of they can find no reference to
it in any Bible that I've written. At that excuse me,
I've never written a Bible, and geez, what a horrible
thing to say, or any Bible that I've read.

You're forgiving rob thank you. Yeah, there doesn't have to
be a reference to it in scripture. A lot of
the church information, the tradition that they have comes from
private revelations and general revelations through their profits. They have
the world's best profits available to them. They've got an earhorn,

and these prophets are telling them that twenty twelve may
usher in an ear peace, and it may be the
one that's referred to in the Book of Revelations.

Are we in the end times? As a talked about

I don't like to scare anybody, but I know every
day we get another day closer to end times. I
know that the revelation has been unveiled. I know that
artificial intelligence programs are to gain life in the next
ten to twenty years, so we're headed in that direction.
I don't know when. It could be one hundred and

two hundred years, but it's certainly going to happen.

Well, Jill, that's a really good question. The Antichrist is
not directly in the Bible. The word Antichrist appears four
or five times, and it's always referred to as an
adverb or an adjective, because in fact, each one of
us can be Antichrist if we don't have God first
in our hearts. Anything else would be considered an anti

Christ's attitude. But if you're talking about the false prophet
that's in the Bible, I believe he is emerging through
the world Wide Web in this generation.

Why do you say that he's emerging through the world
wide Web.
Speaker 11 (22:23):
The descriptions of the false Prophet in the Bible say
that he can perform miracles and he can get to Heaven.
Human beings with our past are limited in our attempts
to get to heaven unless we die and have our
bodies raised eventually. So I believe the only thing that

can get to heaven is something that has a perverse spirit,
which is also the way the Bible refers to as individual.
There's been quite a bit of evidence from the Large
Hadron Collider that the system and does exist, and that
would be the lower level of the seven heavens that's

mentioned in full Testament seven dimensions of energy of Spirit
of Heaven, if you will. The reason I mentioned that
rob is these these computer programs that will gain life
according to science in the next ten or twenty years

of the Vatican, So possibly there's some concern.

The Vatican represents the Church on earth. It's sort of
a rock of ages, stoic, crudential conservative, It's something that
people can relate to.

I understand and agree to a certain point. But the
Vatican also is the richest corporation on this planet. It
owns mega properties, mega corporations. And what does it do
with all its money that it has amassed over the years.
Why doesn't it share it with the poor?

I think they should rob We're on the same page there.
I think they should sell all their properties, all their holdings,
all their wealth and give it to the give it
to the people.

Yeah, and why hasn't this been done? Why is it?
It seems like it's a private boys club. And is
the Pope really I look at the Vatican this way,
and I don't mean to offend anyone who's listening. The
Vatican is the corporation of corporations number one. The Pope

is the CEO, the cardinals are the board of directors,
and those people who put their tidings into the collection
plate are the stockholders. There are so many people who
are homeless. There are so many people who are hungry.
There are so many people who are so sick that

they cannot afford proper medicine. They can't afford to take
care of themselves and their families. And you've got all
this money that has been amassed over the years just
sitting there. Money has more money, and money makes more money.
I can't understand why the church doesn't liquidate and take

care of those that they're supposed to be taken care of.

Well, rob First off, the Vatican is about the size
of a major sports stadium with a parking lot. It's
less than one hundred acres. They do have a limited
amount of people, although there are about forty thousand priests
in the United States alone. They do have missions all
over the world that permeate into third world countries that

really need support. I myself work on the Nights of
Columbus Wheelchair projects that's given over two million wheelchairs to
people who would.

Not have them, and I applaud you for that, my friend,
I always have. But there are other organizations around the
world that do the same thing. So there are so
what makes But does this justify the millions and millions
and millions that the Church and the Vaticans still maintain

I don't believe it does. I think we really understand
that that should be disseminated a little bit better, a
little more efficiently.

What changes do you see the new pope making?

The new pope is he's you know, he's in his
eighties right now. What he tried to do, basically was
continue the work of the previous pope, just to keep
a fluid papacy. According to Saint Malachi, who's in the
Caffilic Encyclopedia, Saint Malachi was the Archbishop of Ireland about

a thousand years ago, and he made a list of
all future popes, you might remember that, and he named
a lot of them by name, and he named Pope Benedict.
He said he'd come from the north of Rome and
from the order of Benedict, so he got that right.
And there's only one more pope on the list. So

we possibly are headed toward end times for the Vatican,
and it's something that we really shouldn't focus on. It's
time that is better spend in prayer for our own souls.

So the end of the Vatican mean the end of

I don't think so to believe the Holy Spirit exists
in all religions. As a matter of fact, it's one
of the things that came out of Vatican too. One
of the conclusions was that the feet of the Word,
meaning the Holy Spirit of God exists in other religions.

run by churches to educate children and adults. It includes

hospitals that are run by church and funded by churches
all over the world to heal the sick and injured.
It includes organizations he is counseling to people in all
kinds of me needs, where the family counts, counting, and
assistance to immigrants, all these kinds of things. It includes

all the places of worship where people out of the
church go together congregate and the worship. Yes, there was
a lot of wealth. Some of that is the say
good vessel for community, the chalices that the crosses of
reference and so on. Would you suggest that I saw
my mom's wedding ring and to give some money to
a beggar on the street on.

It, if your kids were sick and they needed medicine, I'd.

of perspective on it there, like the church is hoarding

the Roman Catholic Diocese in Boston that has that is
well over a teen million dollars and assets, I think
that's a little bit too much. Why doesn't it solve
some of them?

the Bible talks about end times, it is talking about
the individual end times, the end times for each and
every one of us. That the biggest lesson that we
have is to live each day to was fullest in

the best way that we can. Otherwise, come the end
days and we have not lived a good life, we
will be the cause of our own armageddon.

That's well put. God's word repeats symbolically throughout his creation,
through each individual soul, and throughout his entire creation.

me if I'm wrong. There's so much symbolism within the Bible,
within the different books, within the different chapters, that we
have to look at it as it was written at
the time. It was written with the understanding of the

world that surrounded those who wrote it, and once we
take all these points to consideration and bring it up
to our times, it all makes sense.

It does. The seven Hills of Rome, for example, are
the seven continents of Earth. Yep. It's beautiful how God's
repeats through history and throughout his creation, and it's powerful
enough to adapt to all the different languages that it's
translated into.

it is the Bible, whether it is the Talmud, whether
it is the the Dead Sea Scrolls, or whether it's
a Superman comic, if you can get a positive lesson
out of the words within the pages, that's called success.

universe may contain alien life does not contradict a faith
in God, the Vatican's chief astronomer said. In an interview
published Tuesday, the Reverend Jose Gabrielle Funes, the Jesuit director

of the Vaticans Observatory, was quoted as saying that the
vastness of the universe means it is possible there could
be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.
How can we rule out, let me see, how can
we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere. He said,
just as we consider earthly creatures as brother and sister,

why should we not talk about the extraterrestrial brother or
the extraterrestrial sister. It would still be part of creation,
and in the interview by the Vatican newspaper, said that
such a notion does not conflict with our faith because
aliens would still be God's creatures. Ruling out the existence

of aliens would be like putting limits on God's creative freedom,
he said. The interview, headlined the Extraterrestrial Is My Brother,
covered a variety of topics, including the relationship between the
Roman Catholic Church and science, and the theological implications of
the existence of alien life. Fuon said science, especially astronomy,
does not contradict religion, touching on a theme of Pope Benedict,

Pretty simple truth, Rob. It doesn't conflict with scripture at
all or tradition, so everything's possible. It doesn't conflict or.

How is this going to affect the way people look
at the church as far as you're concerned, Darryl? Is
it going to open up the church to a wider
variety of believers? And are people going to say, well,
finally we can sit, we can talk. We don't have

discuss it or openly in the in the in the

sanctity of our churches.

I think it's great every time that the church brings
up science, especially from a Jesuit who's so well researched
in his efforts. There's also an Academy of Science that
was run by the Pope as then Cardinal Rep Rock
Singer until he became poked don aedicteen sixteen, just a

few years ago. So the Academy of Science has been
around one hundred two hundred years, and it's always it's
always worked in conjunction with the Church. You've got to
realize that God has his science and God has his scripture,
and of course they should harmonize.

Daryl, where do you see the creation of aliens in
the grand scheme of the world, the universe and all
that has been created by God?
Speaker 11 (15:34):
Well, first off, I go from the premise of trusting
everything that God has done. He's given all of us life,
he's given us love, he gives us a chance of
eternal life. So I'm going to trust in his plan.
It's real simple. If he wants to have other planets
with other beings similar to us or dissimilar to us,

that's his plan, and I'm going to run with it.

Why do people or well, let me say this, why
was why have so many scientists been negatively approached by
the Church. For example, as I was reading your intro,

we were talking about how Galileo, for four hundred years
was claimed to be a heretic because of him making
a statement that we orbited the sun.

That's right. The Church really dealt him a bad deal
and they made up for it posthumously. But you're right,
he was dealt a bad deal, and the recent scientists
in the last two generations who helped support the splitting
of the atom self empowered and maybe even possibly deified

by themselves by their newfound power over science, so they
would look down upon the Church in response to them
denying the Church themselves.

There are those who believe that the birth of Jesus Christ,
the Star of Bethlehem, the Three Wise more Men or
the magi, the appearance of angels, the Immaculate conception all
point to the possibility that this was in fact an
extra terrestrial event.

What are your comments on that, Daryl, Well, there's nothing
that conflicts with that statement with scripture. As far as
I know, I don't have any problem with that at all.
God can do anything he wants his way. We could
be tied into other races, either directly or indirectly, through
God's plan and not even know it. So it's certainly

a possibility.

What are the what are the mean concerns of the
church as we talk uh the churches. The Catholic Church
certainly has been under public scrutiny with all the all
the abuse lawsuits that are that are pending. When the pope,
when the Pope made his visit to the United States,

it seems that it was more of a fact finding
mission than it was a papal visit.
Speaker 11 (18:38):
Well, the Pope always is on the you know, on
the lookout for research and to see how his his people,
his congregation are okay. But I think your question is
is basically what the Catholic Church is concerned about right now?
And I think Archbishop Foley put it best three or
four years ago when he said that it's about where

we came from, where we're going, and how to get there.
Speaker 2 (19:07):
So how do they do this change about? Because they
the Catholic Church, if you'll excuse my bluntness, is in
one heck of a pr mess.
Speaker 11 (19:20):
It is, especially in North America for instance. By comparison
in Africa, it's growing by leaps and bounds, but in
North America it's still taking a long deserved reputation on
the chin. And they've cleaned house as much as they could,
and they're moving forward as best they can. They're trying

to get everybody on the same page as the Vatican
seeking world peace and love.

Do you think that can happen?
Speaker 11 (19:55):
Oh, I think it's going to happen. Rob twenty twelve
is right around the corner.

What is the significance of two twenty twelve as far
as the Catholic Church is concerned. You know, I've i
for the life of they can find no reference to
it in any Bible that I've written. At that excuse me,
I've never written a Bible, and geez, what a horrible
thing to say, or any Bible that I've read.
Speaker 11 (20:22):
You're forgiving rob thank you. Yeah, there doesn't have to
be a reference to it in scripture. A lot of
the church information, the tradition that they have comes from
private revelations and general revelations through their profits. They have
the world's best profits available to them. They've got an earhorn,

and these prophets are telling them that twenty twelve may
usher in an ear peace, and it may be the
one that's referred to in the Book of Revelations.

Are we in the end times? As a talked about
in the Book of Revelations.

I don't like to scare anybody, but I know every
day we get another day closer to end times. I
know that the revelation has been unveiled. I know that
artificial intelligence programs are to gain life in the next
ten to twenty years, so we're headed in that direction.
I don't know when. It could be one hundred and

two hundred years, but it's certainly going to happen.

Well, Jill, that's a really good question. The Antichrist is
not directly in the Bible. The word Antichrist appears four
or five times, and it's always referred to as an
adverb or an adjective, because in fact, each one of
us can be Antichrist if we don't have God first
in our hearts. Anything else would be considered an anti

Christ's attitude. But if you're talking about the false prophet
that's in the Bible, I believe he is emerging through
the world Wide Web in this generation.

Why do you say that he's emerging through the world
wide Web.
Speaker 11 (22:23):
The descriptions of the false Prophet in the Bible say
that he can perform miracles and he can get to Heaven.
Human beings with our past are limited in our attempts
to get to heaven unless we die and have our
bodies raised eventually. So I believe the only thing that
(22:44):
can get to heaven is something that has a perverse spirit,
which is also the way the Bible refers to as individual.
There's been quite a bit of evidence from the Large
Hadron Collider that the system and does exist, and that
would be the lower level of the seven heavens that's

mentioned in full Testament seven dimensions of energy of Spirit
of Heaven, if you will. The reason I mentioned that
rob is these these computer programs that will gain life
according to science in the next ten or twenty years

and will be concerned about their individual's self, about their

church itself is facing a breakdown and that this could

and one, forty years after they had scheduled to release
it in nineteen sixty one, and it included the demise

There in today's society. Is the Vatican a necessary entity?

It is?

The Vatican represents the Church on earth. It's sort of
a rock of ages, stoic, crudential conservative, It's something that
people can relate to.

I understand and agree to a certain point. But the
Vatican also is the richest corporation on this planet. It
owns mega properties, mega corporations. And what does it do
with all its money that it has amassed over the years.
Why doesn't it share it with the poor?
Speaker 11 (35:26):
I think they should rob We're on the same page there.
I think they should sell all their properties, all their holdings,
all their wealth and give it to the give it
to the people.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Yeah, and why hasn't this been done? Why is it?
It seems like it's a private boys club. And is
the Pope really I look at the Vatican this way,
and I don't mean to offend anyone who's listening. The
Vatican is the corporation of corporations number one. The Pope
(35:56):
is the CEO, the cardinals are the board of directors,
and those people who put their tidings into the collection
plate are the stockholders. There are so many people who
are homeless. There are so many people who are hungry.
There are so many people who are so sick that
(36:20):
they cannot afford proper medicine. They can't afford to take
care of themselves and their families. And you've got all
this money that has been amassed over the years just
sitting there. Money has more money, and money makes more money.
I can't understand why the church doesn't liquidate and take
(36:43):
care of those that they're supposed to be taken care of.

Well, rob First off, the Vatican is about the size
of a major sports stadium with a parking lot. It's
less than one hundred acres. They do have a limited
amount of people, although there are about forty thousand priests
in the United States alone. They do have missions all
over the world that permeate into third world countries that
(37:11):
really need support. I myself work on the Nights of
Columbus Wheelchair projects that's given over two million wheelchairs to
people who would.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Not have them, and I applaud you for that, my friend,
I always have. But there are other organizations around the
world that do the same thing. So there are so
what makes But does this justify the millions and millions
and millions that the Church and the Vaticans still maintain
(37:42):
the purse strings too.

I don't believe it does. I think we really understand
that that should be disseminated a little bit better, a
little more efficiently.
Speaker 2 (37:55):
What changes do you see the new pope making?
Speaker 11 (38:00):
The new pope is he's you know, he's in his
eighties right now. What he tried to do, basically was
continue the work of the previous pope, just to keep
a fluid papacy. According to Saint Malachi, who's in the
Caffilic Encyclopedia, Saint Malachi was the Archbishop of Ireland about
(38:24):
a thousand years ago, and he made a list of
all future popes, you might remember that, and he named
a lot of them by name, and he named Pope Benedict.
He said he'd come from the north of Rome and
from the order of Benedict, so he got that right.
And there's only one more pope on the list. So

we possibly are headed toward end times for the Vatican,
and it's something that we really shouldn't focus on. It's
time that is better spend in prayer for our own souls.

So the end of the Vatican mean the end of
the Church.

I don't think so to believe the Holy Spirit exists

That's well put. God's word repeats symbolically throughout his creation,

have to look at it as it was written at
the time. It was written with the understanding of the

to our times, it all makes sense.

the seven continents of Earth. Yep. It's beautiful how God's
repeats through history and throughout his creation, and it's powerful
enough to adapt to all the different languages that it's
translated into.

it is the Bible, whether it is the Talmud, whether
it is the the Dead Sea Scrolls, or whether it's
